Healthful Charcoal Grilling

Mark A. Stengler, NMD

Grilling was a topic mentioned in the July 2010 issue of Bottom Line Natural Healing. Apart from the food that you grill, are some types of charcoal and lighter fluid less harmful than others? -K.C., via e-mail

Some types of charcoal are, in fact, less harmful than others. Inexpensive supermarket briquettes, which often are made with scraps of wood or sawdust, can include additives such as coal dust (which is bad for your lungs).

Instead, look for "natural" types of charcoal made from 100% hardwood that don’t have the additives or chemicals that can taint food.

Example: Cowboy Charcoal (800-775-4060, www.CowboyCharcoal.com). To start your fire, avoid lighter fluid because it is made of a petroleum distillate that, when lit, can give off chemicals that may leave residue on food. Instead, light your fire with a chimney starter, a metal cylinder with a small charcoal grate that enables you to easily set the charcoal in the cylinder on fire without the use of chemicals—then place the burning coals in the grill.

Reminder: Avoid grilling your food at very high heat for long periods of time.

Natural Healing interviewed Mark A. Stengler, NMD, a naturopathic medical doctor and leading authority on the practice of alternative and integrated medicine.

Dr. Stengler is author of the Bottom Line Natural Healing newsletter, author of The Natural Physician’s Healing Therapies (Bottom Line Books), founder and medical director of the Stengler Center for Integrative Medicine in Encinitas, California, and adjunct associate clinical professor at the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. www.DrStengler.com
