Serena Williams has reached out to the family of the victim in the Steubenville, Ohio, rape case after the tennis star was quoted in a Rolling Stone article saying "she shouldn't have put herself in that position."

The tennis star, in England preparing for Wimbledon, spoke to the victim, her mother and a family lawyer for about 30 minutes Wednesday, the lawyer said. "Serena was very nice, very sincere and it was a very well-received conversation among two women and a young lady," attorney Bob Fitzsimmons said Thursday.

Williams apologized in a statement released through her agent Wednesday.

"I am currently reaching out to the girl's family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article," the statement said. "What was written — what I supposedly said — is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame."

The comment was made in one paragraph of a long story posted online Tuesday about Williams. The 16-time Grand Slam tournament winner is coming off a French Open title and is ranked No. 1 entering Wimbledon, which starts next week.

The victim's family welcomed Williams' apology in its own statement Wednesday, saying it was "proud of her" for the updated remarks.

"We are sure Serena has & will continue to use her God given talents to advance women's equality and send the message that rape is never acceptable under any circumstance," according to the statement released by Fitzsimmons.

"We are fans of Serena and will continue rooting for many more championships but more importantly watching her advance the cause of rape victims who are never to blame."

thank you, Serena, from all of us.

I understand what she meant. If you mix 16 year olds, booze and no supervision it is likely that some unsuspecting girl will get raped.

It doesn't say the boys have an excuse to rape the girl. It does say the parents were negligent in allowing her to be there that late at night and unsupervised.

Shirley,

So I guess you think the same way as miss Williams? Certainly it must be her fault for what she wore, where she was, what she did, right? Excuse the male behavior. Blame the victim. That's mysogynist thinking. Thinking like that is a direct reflection on our societys acceptance of violence in my opinion.

Serena did issue a statement saying she didn't mean to be offensive and perhaps you didn't understand what you were saying either.

Today I read about Spanking for Jesus. Dumber than a box of rock women and the creatures that control them by violence.

Society accepts violence. And excuses it.

It's gross. I wonder what it's going to take to change the way humans treat each other, and if its even possible.

Spanking for Jesus’ movement combines Christian fundamentalism and sadomasochism

C'mon, you can't be suggesting that a 16 year old girl should have been out drinking that way.
