Maya Angelou was certainly loved across the globe, both online and off. Up until 2 days prior to her death Ms. Angelou was indexing at 84% positive in Twitter, extraordinarily high for anyone in the arts, especially considering she was not one to not shy away from a fight.

My mother always started out her conversations about Maya Angelou by saying she was the first female street car conductor in San Francisco.

It inspired me to look over what was considered an “man’s field.” When I took a job that mostly men occupied. My mother pulled me aside during an award ceremony for me excelling in that position and said, “see you father doesn’t know everything.”

She meant when he told me that a black woman had nothing in the way of advice that could benefit a white woman.

I smiled and said, of course.
