Bag The Plastic Bag

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 20th April 2009

I despise plastic bags. And every time I go to the grocery store and I see someone take their groceries home in a new plastic bag, I get pissy. (And I get pissy about the paper bags too.) Bring your own bag; reuse, reuse and reuse it, until it is in shreds. Then once they’re all used up, vow to never use a plastic bag again, and buy a couple of those fab bags that Trader Joe’s or Whole foods puts out.  Really, any reusable bag will work but finding one that is made out of recycled plastic is even better. Until we stop using plastic all together we need to find ways to use all of these plastic bags that are taking over the world.

Check this out:

Plastic bags and other marine debris cause serious problems for the health of our coast and bay shorelines. Each year an estimated one million plastic bags make their way into San Francisco Bay, where they pollute the water and endanger the 500 species of animals that live in the Bay.

Take action >>

Plastic litter never biodegrades. It is an eyesore for our communities and costs local governments millions to clean up. The Governor’s Ocean Protection Council will vote soon on whether or not to support local efforts to reduce plastic bag litter.

Please ask Governor Schwarzenegger to be a leader in the effort to eliminate plastic bags in our communities. Hurry! The vote is set for April 23. Choose the Bay over the bag!

Thank you for making a difference to California’s fragile ecosystems and wildlife habitat today.

Obviously this is in regards to The Bay Area, so if you live in this beautiful area by the bay, sign the petition please. Knowing this many bags are floating in the bay is just horrific. This should not be happening.

And to the many readers who live elsewhere, I am sure the plastic bag sitch is the same and maybe worse. Do yourself and the future of our planet a favor:  Get rid of the plastic bag in your life and turn to something eco-friendly and reusable.

I went to a baby shower this weekend and the favor for the guests were all brightly colored eco-friendly reusable grocery bags. How cool is that? Attached to each bag was a sweet note:

“Thank you for showering AJ and Finley with your love today. Please use this bag to give Finley, and all the children, the greatest gift of all…..a clean world to grow up in!”

I love it. Sadly, favors for guests have come to this, but thankfully there are people out there such as AJ, a soon to be new mother, who is concerned about her child growing up in a safe and clean world, and is doing something about it. Yes, it is a small step, but it is a step that opens up awareness that this planet needs some paying attention to.

So….if you haven’t already, take that small step and buy a few reusable grocery bags, and bag the plastic bag. I Keep three in my car at all times. I suggest you keep a few stored too, if you don’t already. Then you have no excuse to ever use plastic or even paper again. Thank you!

The New Extreme Hunting: Bagging A Polar Bear

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 7th April 2009

Yes I am on a roll….here’s another little didley that I discovered while perusing the internet. With all that we know about global warming and its effects on Polar Bears…with all that we know about Polar Bears and their importance in this world, we have lowlife degenerate scum hunting for the thrill of the kill.

Polar Bears are not only starving and drowning because of the perils of climate change but now they have to deal with humans hunting them for sport. The latest challenge for fans of extreme hunting? They call it ‘bagging a Polar Bear’. And for $35 grand, you too can bag one for the coveted Polar Bear hide. How sickening is that?

Boyd Warner doesn’t think so.  He treasures the memories of killing his first Polar Bear:

It was 2003. For days he had stalked his prey on the frozen wastelands north of Pond Inlet, one of Canada’s most isolated Inuit communities deep inside the Arctic Circle. His dog team picked up the scent of an eight-foot adult male and they hurtled over the ice: the hunt was on.

“It was one of those beautiful Arctic days,” recalled Mr Warner. “We’d had about 14 hours of sunlight and were completely surrounded by nature. The moment of death comes quickly for the bear. You might track one for days through the ice but a single shot to the heart kills it instantly.”

Mr Warner is the man who helps others create treasurable memories too.

Earlier this week, the 45-year-old Canadian, whose company Adventure Northwest is based in Yellowknife, sent this season’s first group of hunters north to Pond Inlet, where they will track and kill up to six bears. “This is probably the toughest hunt you can ever do,” he said. “The weather conditions are appalling and it takes a huge amount of patience. You’re living in the Arctic where it can drop to -50C at night and everything is done with sled dogs. It’s incredibly gruelling.” His clientele is Mexicans, Americans and Europeans who say that they ‘respect the animal enormously.’

Wha’at?! So if they are killing those that they ‘respect’, how do they treat those they don’t ‘respect’?

“I don’t enjoy killing animals but I enjoy the hunt,” said Mr Warner. “People find that difficult to understand but for me there is no paradox.”

Yeah, I have a hard time understanding your BS. If you don’t enjoy killing then why do it? This is his answer:

“Those 20 bears are going to get killed one way or another because the Inuits depend on them for food during the winter,” Mr Warner insisted. “So it shouldn’t really matter whether it is the indigenous population that is shooting them or outsiders.”

Oh, so easy for him to justify his actions…but sorry, it does matter

I know that the Polar Bears have been a source of food for the Inuits but knowing that up to two-thirds of all polar bears could be lost by 2050, this brings the sustainability of hunting into question.  We need to protect these bears.

As far as Warner, Oh, how I would love for Zmiv to take him on. You know…put him out on the ice and hunt him down. Only make it a long, slow and painful kill.  I can’t help feeling that way…but hey, I ‘respect’ Mr. Warner.

My Vision For Peace: Obama The World….

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 29th March 2009

While driving home yesterday Doug and I were noticing some insightful bumper stickers; most of them quoting Einstein.  I don’t remember exactly what they said anymore.  And right now, it doesn’t matter.

Then another one caught my eye. Something about ‘bombing the world to pieces or choosing peace…’  I wasn’t really impressed with this one but it did inspire me, and these words flew out of my mouth:

“We can ‘bomb’ the world to pieces, or we can ‘Obama’ the world to peace.”

What do you think?  Good enough for a bumper sticker?

Peace out…

Obama Has A Plan….Give Him A Chance

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 2nd March 2009

Hi DNSR!: Good to hear from you again. Recession zin? Pray tell, what is that? :) I have heard about these orphanages and I am grateful for them. These elephants need protection and family. Thanks for commenting. Now…what else can you report? Especially about the LTTE…I and inquiring readers such as Shelia want to know.

Lance: Funny you should mention Viviane Castro – I saw the photo of her with Obama on her thigh – very cool. And if I were Michelle Obama,  I wouldn’t worry for a minute about a stained dress showing up in the white house. He is definitely not a Clinton.

Anna:  I read the article that you posted, along with your comments. I really do not know much about the history of Guam except that it is a US territory, ceded to the U.S. by Spain. No wonder you/they feel as you do. Your comment peaked my interest. Hmm…Perhaps I feel an article brewing. Anyway, good luck in the pageant! Keep us updated.

Miki: I NEVER take a day off. I am always here. You say, ‘No way to treat the troops.’ Hmm…exactly what are you saying? As far as the naysayers: They don’t bother me – it makes the banter interesting. But you are correct – they must find something interesting here or they wouldn’t keep coming back. You say you love my blog – maybe they do too.

Robert: Nice to see that I am not the only one requesting that the ‘anons’ pick a name. If I was going to be anonymous, it is much more fun to have a name than just be an anonymous anonymous. :) We’ll see if anyone takes your advice. If not, we’ll live with it.

As far as the rest of your comment, I agree, if even half the stuff Anonz has told us was true, we had better get in the game.

Aybak: I agree with you. Men are especially attuned to their own needs. Whereas women are inherent care givers. I appreciate the differences between men and women and what they bring to the table. What I don’t like is when actions from either sex have an affect on my livelihood or the livelihood of others. Other than that, live and let live.

And you raise a very valid question.  The ‘Do unto others…’ always comes to mind with questions like this. It is a simple mantra but one that not many pay attention to.

Zen Lill:  I got your phone message too. I think I will be available late afternoon on Wednesday.  I look forward to reading your draft or collaborating one with you.  Good luck with the new job! How did the open go yesterday?

Cleo, Brooke, Linda & Frank and anonymous ( yes all 3 of you): And I will add: Do not bank with Chase either. They totally screwed me with escalating rates and at that time I had excellent credit.   And yes it’s true, if you have good credit and pay monthly, on time, you will be in good standing, and the rates most likely will not go up.  But the moment you screw up, they hit you with the late charges, and ridiculously increased rates. Some people are just not responsible and pay late, or miss monthly payments consistently.  They deserve to have their rates increased. But the ones who are truly responsible and have made payments on time and their credit is in good standing, should be given a break. Shit happens some times. And in these time a lot of shit is happening.

I do know that the best thing to do is communicate with them immediately, the moment you are aware that you may have trouble making a payment.  Whenever I have screwed up I have been able to have the late charges removed. But again, I make a call and when they see that I have a good record, they usually work with me. Unfortunately this is not true for all banks. I have dealt with ones who won’t budge at all. The present is like nothing we have dealt with before.

I don’t know about all of the credit cards that you all have, but mine have given me 1 month to 3 months to either close my accounts or accept their new rates.  Luckily, I have pretty good credit  – not excellent like I used to, but who does anymore? So when I got letters these letters telling me that my rates were going to be raised unless I locked in the current rate by closing them, I of course closed them.  But I am with you, CUT YOUR CARDS UP! I don’t use mine anymore. I am just paying them off. I can promise, that if I ever use a card again,  I am paying it off monthly or else I will not use it.  The funny thing is, we used our cards to help our businesses grow, not for frivolous desires. As I look back, part of me wishes we did use them for fun – at least we would have great memories. :)

Doug said to me the other day, ‘Why don’t we all just stop paying on our credit cards?’ – And he meant EVERYONE. These banks are getting bailed out and we the taxpayers are the ones who are going to have to pay for it, not to mention the late charges, and high interest rates.  Could we have an impact with the banks it we all refused to make one more payment on our credit cards?

AH:  Good to hear from you again.  What you say about the banks makes so much sense. But I still ask, ‘Why do the banks continue to be so greedy with us, the credit card holders, the taxpayers, the ones that that are bailing them out? Are they not taking enough from us already? I ask this rhetorically as I know the answer, but it still continues to baffle me that the greed does not end…that the greed is literally bankrupting our country.

I believe that President Obama has a plan too and I totally back him. We voted him in and I trust he has our best interest at heart. I read and hear that many do not agree with his plan, but I too agree that we must give him a chance. He is the first president that has set out and is doing what he promised he would do. He is setting a new precedent on so many different levels.  I have faith that he will clean house.

Got to run.

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle

Global Warming: Don’t Give Up

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 27th February 2009

If this video doesn’t hit you right in the gut, and inspire you to do get involved and do something, I don’t know what will.  That’s really all I have to say this early in the morning….well, except maybe this…Have a beautiful day and remember…another day will most surely always come, but will it be as beautiful as it is today?  Only we as a society can ensure that it will.

~~~~~~~~
Hi Zen Lill: Good question. I thought Azza would be back by now. I’m anxious to hear what she and the crew have been up to. I’m also cusious about the web. Hmm…Azza…are you back?
Hi Kenny: All voices are welcome. It is a hit or miss if you get in :()
Roberts: Your comment is very apropos. Did you watch the video above? I’m with Obama, environment first – without it we really have nothing.
Hello Anonz: I am always amazed that you have the time to write in considering your circumstances.   Your write is so very interesting and quite revealing.
I have to go. Peace out….
Gratefully your blog host,
