The Truth About The President And The Deficit

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 29th May 2012

Good morning!

This write is for those of you who are “confused” or just want to “blame” the president for whatever reason…

The Truth About the President and the Deficit

Arguably the biggest lie coming from the Republicans and the Romney campaign is that President Obama is a tax and spend liberal who’s directly and personally responsible for record deficits and a crushing national debt.

Not only is Mitt Romney telling his supporters that President Obama continues to spend out of control, but additionally that the president is responsible for doubling the budget deficit since he took office. This is not a new attack. Republicans who blindly greenlit trillions in Bush-era spending have been engaged in this nonsense practically since the minute the president was inaugurated.

I like to do this from time to time, so consider this a one-stop source for debunking what the Republicans are claiming about the Obama administration’s fiscal record. Before I do, however, I’d like to note that Republicans often confuse the national debt with the federal budget deficit, not unlike the way they scramble the stimulus and the bailouts. (The “stimulus,” passed by President Obama, is the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the “bailout,” passed by President Bush, is also known as TARP.) They’re not interchangeable terms.

For example, Karl Rove’s new and highly deceptive anti-Obama commercial somehow conflates the national debt and unemployment, calling it “job-killing debt,” even though job-creation and the national debt are about as interdependent as Rove and The Truth. We can assume that Rove simply doesn’t know what the debt actually is, or that he’s deliberately lying to voters.

To be clear: the federal budget deficit is the annual difference between what the government spends and what it collects in revenue. It’s often similar, higher or lower, than the previous fiscal year’s deficit. The debt is the total amount of money the United States owes to creditors, and this much larger figure accrues from year to year. A lot of people don’t know the difference, and I’ve even heard very serious cable news people mix them up, too.

So let’s start from the beginning — prior to 2009 when the president was inaugurated. While it’s true that, in a general sense, the deficit and debt are higher than ever before, it has less to do with President Obama, and more to do with the previous administration’s careless spending, ridiculously large tax cuts for the super-rich coupled with the globally massive economic depression from which we’re still extricating ourselves.

The following chart, using Congressional Budget Office numbers, precisely illustrates the sources of the federal budget deficit.

One layer is directly the result of Obama administration policies. The rest aren’t. And the “economic downturn” began prior to the president’s inauguration, and, as time goes on, we’re learning that the recession was far worse than we were led to believe at the time, making an escape and recovery even longer and more challenging than anticipated.

In terms of the debt, the strata are remarkably similar, even though the numbers are larger:

As you can see, much of the “record” deficit and debt had nothing to do with the Obama administration. But Republicans will insist that the deficit is out of control and that happened on Obama’s watch beginning in 2009, and has been getting worse every year since then.

This is a super-colossal lie.

Here’s Bob Beauprez, a former Republican congressman and current blogger for the popular conservative website Townhall.com lying to his readers:

The 2011 budget deficit for the federal government is $1.299 trillion according to numbers just released by the U.S. Treasury. That is the second highest deficit in history. [...]Obama will likely make it four in a row one year from now as his own budget shop is estimating a $1.1 trillion deficit for 2012.

The 2009 deficit still holds the record at $1.412 trillion. In 2010 the deficit reached $1.293. In just three years, more than $4 trillion of red ink has been added to the debt. The government’s fiscal year ends September 30.

Did you spot the lie? It’s 2009. Even though the president entered office in 2009, the fiscal year 2009 spending for October 2008 to September 2009 was requested by President Bush and worsened by his policies (see previous deficit chart). The Congressional Budget Office noted that President Obama inherited $1.2 trillion of the total $1.4 trillion deficit for 2009.

And even though it’s staring him in the face, Beauprez failed to note that the president has reduced the deficit nearly every year. Again, by Beauprez’s own numbers, the president has cut the deficit every year except for one. Between 2009 and 2012, the president will have reduced the deficit by $312 billion. Put another way, the president has cut the deficit by nearly 25 percent — so far.

Much to my personal Keynesian chagrin, President Obama cut spending, cut the deficit and cut taxes. (I’d rather he spend more in the short term to stimulate more growth and then cut the deficit when things have stabilized, but yeah.) In chart form:

A couple of months ago in Arizona, Mitt Romney attacked the president on this topic with a whopper lie: “He said he’d cut the deficit in half. He’s doubled it. He’s doubled it.”

Mitt Romney actually said that. Well, no, the president didn’t cut the deficit in half. And he hasn’t doubled it. Obviously. Romney lied again.

Actually, the president is on course to practically erasing the entire budget deficit by 2017, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The 2017 budget deficit, which will reflect President Obama’s final spending requests (a similar dynamic to Bush’s last deficit of 2009), could end up dropping close to zero, as a percentage of GDP.

Conversely, the Tax Policy Center reported that the Romney tax plan would explode the deficit by nearly $3 trillion over ten years. And that doesn’t even take into consideration the reversal of the president’s deficit cutting policies like the Affordable Care Act, or another recession, or whatever Romney decides to do in Iran.

Feel free to steal the above charts and pass them around. The Republicans have made it part of their strategy to flagrantly lie to their followers knowing that any fact-checking to debunk the lies will be met with a creepy “liberal bias” response. They’re counting on it — especially in the Romney campaign. The rest of us are tasked with being the reality-based grownups in the room.

UPDATE: I neglected to add this chart to the mix, via numbers from Market Watch. It turns out that annualized spending growth is the slowest of any president in the last 30 years.

Part of the reason for the slow growth is that Obama — unlike his Republican and Democratic predecessors — signed a law in February 2010 necessitating that new spending laws are paid for. In addition, Obama last year signed into law over $2 trillion in debt-reduction over the next decade.

2012-05-23-chart_annualized_spending.jpg

No wonder the Republicans have to lie. The truth is too damaging to their prospects.

Readers: If some of you are still “confused”, I can’t help you – you’re a lost cause. If you still want to “blame” for whatever reason, then obviously you are with the party of “ABO”, and pretty much nothing I can say or do will change your mind. But don’t think that means I condone your attitude, false beliefs, lies, and behavior. It just means I can’t give up, and let that kind of thinking run and ruin our country.

And on that note, I’ll wish you all a beautiful day!

Good morning!

Mitt Romney Bain Capital Record Targeted By Obama Campaign

President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign on Monday morning opened a new front in its election faceoff with presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney, releasing documentary-style videos and a full website portraying Romney as a job-destroying corporate takeover artist.

The Obama campaign put out a two-minute video and a six-minute video featuring interviews with former workers at GST Steel, a company acquired by Romney’s private equity firm Bain Capital in 1993. GST shut down its Kansas City plant in 2001, costing about 750 workers their jobs.

The Obama campaign has also launched a website, RomneyEconomics.com, which focuses on GST and two other companies that went bankrupt after Bain acquired them: Dade International, a medical diagnostics equipment firm, and Stage Stores, a chain of small-town department stores.

That means there are likely to be more videos such as the ones released today focusing on GST.

For now, the Obama campaign will be airing the two-minute ad in Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Colorado and Virginia, the campaign said. The six-minute video can only be seen online.

The campaign describes GST this way on RomneyEconomics.com:

Kansas City’s GST Steel was a successful company that had been making steel rods for 103 years when Mitt Romney and his partners took control in 1993. They cut corners and extracted profit from the business at every turn, placing it deeply in debt. When the company eventually declared bankruptcy, workers were denied their full pensions and health insurance, and the federal government was forced to step in and bail out the pension fund.

When Reuters wrote about GST in January, Romney spokesman Ryan Williams offered this comment: “Bain Capital invested in many businesses. While not every business was successful, the firm had an excellent overall track record and created jobs with well-known companies like Staples, Dominos Pizza and Sports Authority.”

Watch both GST videos here:

UPDATE: 9:05 a.m. — The Romney campaign responded with a written statement:

“We welcome the Obama campaign’s attempt to pivot back to jobs and a discussion of their failed record. Mitt Romney helped create more jobs in his private sector experience and more jobs as Governor of Massachusetts than President Obama has for the entire nation,” said Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul.

“President Obama has many questions to answer as to why his administration used the stimulus to reward wealthy campaign donors with taxpayer money for bad ideas like Solyndra, but 23 million Americans are still struggling to find jobs,” Saul said. “If the Obama administration was less concerned about pleasing their wealthy donors and more concerned about creating jobs, America would be much better off.”

UPDATE: 9:55 a.m. — The ads have generated a significant amount of pushback from beyond the Romney campaign as well.

The Daily Caller points out that Romney was no longer “running the day-to-day activities” at Bain Capital when GST Steel went bankrupt in 2001.

A former Obama adviser, Steve Rattner (himself a former private equity executive),says the ads are “unfair” (the RNC pushed this out).

And the Washington Examiner suggests that Romney responds by pointing out that Obama cost tens of thousands of jobs by pushing the auto companies to close dealerships in exchange for a bailout.

UPDATE: 3:45 p.m. — The Obama campaign’s ad buy is only for one day,href=”http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2012/05/obamas-bain-ad-a-day-engagement-123398.html” target=”_hplink”>according to Politico, making it more of a play to earn media coverage than a real paid ad campaign intended to persuade voters.

Kathy: Except for the Brown snake epidemic, I really enjoyed your chronicles of Guam. Lucky you for getting to send so much time there and the chance to visit the Trench. Knowing how I love island living/weather, Guam sounds like home to me.

Social Butterfly, Zen Lill: Thank you. She was a great woman, and will be missed by all. We are celebrating her life on Saturday and I expect it to be wonderful. PS ZL: I like what you said.

Anna, Peter: Hafa Adai. So nice to hear from both of you! I realized after seeing both of your comments that it has been awhile. How is everything?

Cn: I like what you wrote. I say, “People don’t police themselves”. I think I stole that thought from Anonz. But it is so true.

SS-1: Hmm…like that quote. Unfortunately it really matters what people read, and watch on TV, and in this modern age, what they read and watch on the internet. It is amazing to me how many people watch FOX, and stupidly believe without really doing their homework. It is destructive and irresponsible at worst and lazy at best.

Ída: Following Whisper’s lead, in one word, “Yes”.

Roger, Roger, Roger…Does it not occur to you? Perhaps your wife is doing and thinking the same same thing. You know the song don’t you? Got to love it. Sometimes it makes a woman a better partner, especially when she’s getting it good and the pussy is primed.

This one’s for you:

Love the song – Diggin’ the dancing and the green suit!

Grace: Payback is a bitch isn’t it?

Brenda: I agree with the “was my best friend”. What is wrong with women who don’t share this vital information with their girlfriends? Women need to know when their so-called “man” is doing “indiscretions” behind their backs.

A note to all Girls: Be a true girlfriend and Tell TELL TELL about the LSOS!

Helen: Exactly right. Women make the biggest mistake thinking that their relationship is going to be different…that they’re going to be the one to “change him”. He wouldn’t dare cheat on me. Yeah right. You will surely be disappointed and most likely hurt.

Morgan: Well you got one thing right, I do love Obama. The only idiot in your little comment is Hasselbeck.

Trish: This topic was on my mind this morning.  So this one’s for you.

Lawrence O’Donnell Rips Newsweek’s Obama Gay Marriage Cover: America Is ‘Wicked Stupid’ (VIDEO)

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Lawrence O’Donnell ripped Newsweek on his MSNBC show Monday night for itsprovocative cover celebrating President Barack Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage.

After showing an image of Newsweek’s cover featuring Obama with a rainbow-covered halo above his head (or as one HuffPost editor fondly dubbed it—a gaylo), O’Donnell called the magazine “wicked desperate.”

“Newsweek had two headlines they were thinking of going with,” O’Donnell told his panel. “‘Please Buy This Magazine’ was one…and the other was ‘The First Gay President.’”

O’Donnell seemed to take issue with the fact that some Americans may believe Newsweek’s headline as factual statement about the president.

“We live in a wicked stupid country, okay,” O’Donnell said. “This is a country that believes, in a very substantial proportion, that Barack Obama is a Muslim. Huge number, millions and millions of people…like 30 percent, think he wasn’t born American. They think he’s Kenyan. Crazy, crazy beliefs. And Newsweek, it seems to me, has to consider the responsibility of sending out into such a collectively stupid country and stupid electorate this thing, which is the only sentence in Newsweek that most people are going to read this week – the sentence on the cover.”

O’Donnell added that the cover and headline could perpetuate more misinformation about the president. “The ‘Obama is gay’ number is now going to go up to 35 [percent],” O’Donnell said, referring to the portion of the population that could mistake Newsweek’s headline for fact.

Watch the discussion in the video above. The exchange comes at about 3 minutes into the segment.

NW: You may feel like you have stepped into an insane asylum, but when I read the lies, rhetoric, all-about-me, bigoted comments of “Anyone but Obama”,  I know I have.

Alycedale: Coattails. Obama needs “coattails”.

This is a good place to end. The forum is open. Blog me.

Peace out.

History Retweeted

Good morning!

Well, as usual, my readers are always so on top of the latest. I too am so delighted over Obama’s support of gay marriage.  And since this news is so huge, I couldn’t help but blog about it today.

Obama has made history in perhaps more ways than one. And in this modern world, there are so many more ways to get the word out. People were so excited, the “tweeting” of this historic moment may also have made history in the Twitter world.

Did Obama’s same-sex marriage tweet break Twitter records?

To say that President Obama’s announcement of support for gay marriage yesterday was historic is something of an understatement. But it appears that it didn’t just make history in the fight for gay rights — it may have also made Twitter history as one of the most retweeted messages of all time, as well.

Twitter’s interface only shows exact retweet numbers up to a total of 50, referring to all totals higher as “50+.” But thanks to self-proclaimed hacker Michael Schonfeld, we know exactly how many times the Obama message has been retweeted. According to retweetingobama.com, a site that uses the Twitter API to generate an exact total of the number of retweets Obama’s historic announcement received, it has been shared over 56,726 times in the last 24 hours… and counting.

The most retweeted comment of all time appears to be a June 2011 tweet from restaurant chain Wendy’s, which offered 50 cents to charity for each time someone clicked to send the message off to their friends. There are no official numbers offered by Twitter, but the retweet count is well over 100,000.

That Wendy’s tweet, however, was “sponsored” — meaning that the Wendy’s Corporation paid to have it appear in all users’ Twitter streams. President Obama’s tweet was not sponsored, meaning that it had to go viral organically, without paid assistance.

Twitter has yet to confirm whether or not President Obama’s tweet is indeed the most retweeted, non-sponsored tweet of all time, but there is plenty of evidence in his favor. And if it isn’t yet, given that people are still feverishly hitting that “retweet” button, it may just be a matter of time until it is.

*******

Readers: Congratulations to all of the gays and lesbians for being recognized by our president.

Good morning!

First things first…

Robert, RT, Alycedale and PrP: I HOPE that you didn’t think that my not naming you yesterday in my list of “missing the regulars”, meant I didn’t consider you all “Regulars”.  If I wasn’t clear, let me say now, that I was only addressing those who have not been here in awhile. You three have  posted recently. Hence, the reason for me not bringing up your name. I am sure you all know how grateful and happy I am that you are here too!

That being said, how excited I was to read the comments and see some of the names of the people that I have been missing. I am pleasantly surprised that even though some of the “Regulars” haven’t been posting comments regularly, they are still reading. Wow.

Jorge H:  So nice to hear from you! Thanks for continuing to read. Love that you have added a last initial for recognition – does that mean you are going to say a bit more here? HOPE so! Congratulations to you and Carla! How delightful that a baby is on the way. I am so excited for the both of you! Big hugs and kisses.

With respect to Al, yes he was quite the hoot, and he definitely had a way with words. Al and Howie know that they are always welcome here.

Carla: I wanted to personally congratulate you on the little one soon to come.  I HOPE you’ll comment sometime too.

Galene: I too was happy about President Obama’s support of gay marriage. And with respect to Megan McCain, you said it all.

Helena:  So nice to hear from you as well! Thanks for always reading. I understand what you mean. It can be a bit overwhelming with the comments. I used to get so excited when I saw so many. Now…when days are slow or people can’t get in, I give a sigh of relief and know that I have more time in my day. But don’t get me wrong…if I see more than a day of no comments, I feel alone here. :) It is a strange flip of emotions. Anyway, thank you for the kind words.

Mike: Nice to see you are still here as well! Thanks too for always taking a peak here. And I wish you luck in your undercover work, especially since it is uncovering the Right and trying to steal the coming election. Anything that can be told to keep the integrity of the election is so important, so I thank you for your work and look forward to hearing more as it is uncovered.

With respect to Howie, that is an interesting point. Perhaps he will be reading and that tidbit will inspire him to come back.

Eleanor: Nice.

I have more to say but it is already getting late. So here’s something that interested me when I saw it. Perhaps it will interest you as well. The “Halliburton Loophole” with respect to “Fracking”, and its affects on our health and the environment, has been in the news for the past couple of years. However, the other day listening to NPR,  I was reminded.

Readers: Thoughts? Flap your lips…Blog me.

Peace out.
