Rush, Don’t Fuck With Our Daughters

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 6th March 2012

Good morning!

Guess I’m hooked on this subject. Except I like my title better. :)

Rush, Don’t Mess With Our Daughters

Rush Limbaugh took on more than just every young woman in the country last week when he called one of them a “slut” and a “prostitute”.

He also took on the parents of all young women.

And that is turning out to be a group you don’t want to mess with.

You know the basics by now — third-year-law student Sandra Fluke has been advocating that her school, Georgetown University, cover birth control as part of the standard health insurance plan, and Limbaugh decided that this somehow made her the above terms (I really don’t want to repeat them any more than absolutely necessary…)

The response was swift and furious, and, in a rare moment in a career of making people angry, Limbaugh was moved to apologize. It turned out to be one of those kinds of apologies that really isn’t, but, that aside, it was a sign that even he realized he’d crossed some sort of a line.

Most striking to me in this ongoing firestorm was not anger of the pundits (Maureen Dowd’s column yesterday, titled “Have You No Shame, Rush?” says it best) nor the tap-dancing of politicians who need his support (Santorum brushed off Limbaugh’s remarks as those of “an entertainer”) nor the delicious gotcha of journalists (Mother Jones pointed out that Limbaugh seemed to be confusing birth control pills — which one takes daily — with Viagra — which one only takes per, umm, encounter — because he accused Fluke of having so much sex that she couldn’t afford her pill supply.)

No, what resonated most was the statement of David Friend, the president of Carbonite, which is one ofeight sponsors who have abandoned Limbaugh so far (among those is AOL, the parent company of The Huffington Post.) In announcing yesterday that his company would withdraw its sponsorship Limbaugh’s radio show, Friend made it clear this had gotten personal :

No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke, and I have two, could possibly abide the insult and abuse heaped upon this courageous and well-intentioned young lady. Mr. Limbaugh, with his highly personal attacks on Miss Fluke, overstepped any reasonable bounds of decency. Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse.

Friend was not the only one for whom this was the final straw, an attack on a young woman who could have been their own. It certainly was for Jessica Scott, a career military commander — and mother of two daughters — who launched the hashtag #iamnotaslut on Friday, and watched it go viral. Later, on her website, she explained, that, like Friend, her motivation to act came from her girls:

You may call me many things but that does not negate the things I call myself. You could call me a Mom, because I have two beautiful daughters who I want to grow up knowing their full potential is between their ears, not their legs. You could call me Soldier, because I love wearing my nation’s uniform and it is an honor to serve. You could call me Author, because I managed to write a book that people read. You could call me a Wife, because I’ve been with the same man for fifteen years. You could call me a Friend because I’m there, for laughs or for tears. Any of those things define me so much better than the singular hatred of calling me a slut because I use birth control.

But go ahead. Call me a slut. It doesn’t make me one.

At about the time that Scott was posting, Fluke was in the green room waiting to be interviewed on MSNBC when she received a phone call from President Obama. “As the father of two daughters,” his aides later explained, he had been moved to contact Fluke. What did he tell her? Here’s how she described the call a few minutes after she hung up:

He encouraged me and supported me and thanked me for speaking out about the concerns of American women What was really personal for me was that he said to tell my parents that they should be proud. And that meant a lot because Rush Limbaugh questioned whether or not my family would be proud of me. So I just appreciated that very much.

Fluke assured Andrea Mitchell that yes, her parents had in fact already told her they were proud of her.

This parent is too, Sandra. Very proud.

Thoughts? Oh..it’s Super Tuesday. Wonder which LSOS will pull into the lead. Any guesses? Blog me.

Peace out.

Flap Your Lips Friday

Good morning!

With Obama’s numbers high and the lack of a competent (I’m being nice here) republican candidate, I am with Bill Maher, “The  election is not in the bag”.  This write is more about what the title speaks, which I enjoyed reading. But I also like the side story on Obama and the election. And as you will read, Anonz is not the only one who knows that the majority of republican billionaires have contributed to the republican party via Super Pacs.

If you grow up in America, it’s pretty rare if you don’t love money. One of the first things I ever remember being punished for was stealing money. Five dollars, off my father’s dresser. I was so little, I don’t think I even knew it was wrong to take something that wasn’t specifically mine — I recall this being my introduction to the concept of “larceny is bad.” But somehow, I knew it was good to have cash.

After I left my middle class household at 18, standard of living took a real tumble for a while. At Cornell, I had no money, and boy did I look it. They called where I lived the last three years Collegetown, but Collegetown was really slums in a rural setting. Landlords did not have to work that hard in Ithaca, N.Y. — every year, there was fresh supply of eager tenants among the students who didn’t want to live in a sorority or fraternity. It was a sweet market for a slumlord.

But even that looked good compared to what was waiting for me as I began my illustrious career as a standup comedian in New York City in 1979. First year I lived on 99th Street in Spanish Harlem, a five-floor walk up, toilet down the hall. No shower — a tub that sat in the kitchen with a snake-like attachment that hooked up to the kitchen sink. Walked home every night from the comedy clubs on the tony Upper East Side, watching the neighborhoods become poorer and scarier as I made my way north, and I’m sure the only reason I was never robbed was, they took one look at me and knew it wasn’t worth the trouble. Sometimes, freedom really is just another word for nothing left to lose.

And yet, in a short 33 years, things had turned around enough so that I was able to give a million dollars to the super PAC of a certain mixed-race president who, I would like to remind all my overconfident progressive friends, does NOT have this election in the bag. And a lot of people this last week have said the same thing to me: “You’re not picking up the drinks tonight?”

The great thing about having been poor is how liberated it makes you if you eventually become rich. There’s nothing like the knowledge that you don’t need money to survive. That the money cushion you lie on every night doesn’t have to be three feet thick, and you can still get to sleep.

Other people seemed surprised I had a million dollars, which amused me. I’ve had a television show since 1993; television pays well — I may even have another million lying around somewhere. Every year when I visit my accountant in December to see how the year went, he always says I’m the best saver of all his clients, which amazes me, because I feel like I deprive myself of absolutely nothing. I once asked him, what do your other clients spend their money on? Because I know who some of his other clients are, and I know they make WAY more than I do. He said that what they spend their money on is always changing, and that’s not even the point — the point is, however much money they make that year, they always spend all of it! That’s how they think: have money, spend it, because the real tragedy would be to die and have money left over.

Me? I just don’t have expensive tastes I guess — I don’t collect cars or paintings or jewelry, and I gave up my heroin habit years ago. But I also know that, as I said when I presented that giant check to Priorities USA Action last Thursday at the end of my stand up special on Yahoo!, “This hurts!” I was trying to make the point that if I could do it, a lot of other people could do it a lot more easily than me. You know, the only place in America where the millionaires and billionaires are predominantly liberal is here in Hollywood — with the possible exception of Silicon Valley and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. There’s a reason that of the 16 billionaires that have contributed to super PACs this year, 14 have given to Republicans. It is generally the party of the rich. And in a post-Citizens United world, the party of the rich has an advantage like they’ve never had before. In 2008, the most you could give to a candidate was $2,300. Now it’s Infinity. No, the election is not in the bag.

Al: You’re welcome. It seems Henry is a great testimonial that it works. I HOPE you have the same results. All I can say is that I wish I had kept up with drinking it. I don’t have any pain in my joints but I bet it is great for maintenance.

Kent: You certainly have created a popular thread on my blog, and my readers are no doubt enjoying it. Although I admit I smiled while reading the comments (thanks for all of the compliments), your story is amusing, only because it is made personal by copying the story lines given here, and by involving all of the characters/readers who comment here. How could I not be amused? -But…you do have gall. Let this be known…fun aside, I am in no way giving my okay, nor approving of the fact that you are not honoring my copyright, by basically stealing what is not yours.

Anonz: Unfortunately, I know what you say is true.  Let’s HOPE everyone else takes your words seriously. And I HOPE you are taking good care of yourself.

Ruth!: So great to see you here! I have missed seeing your comments. Paris, and you and everyone there, is still on my mind as you know. I HOPE you’ll stick around. I want to see your name here more often. Kisses and hugs to you and yours.

Now…I can see there are many more comments but my time is up. If you want to continue, the forum is open.

Peace out.

Local Girl Nadia Lockyer…

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 27th February 2012

…let’s her little head overrule the big.

Good morning!

Wayne, your apology sounds sincere to me. So, this one’s for you. Women too can let their little clitoris head overrule their big one.

Sex-tape stunner in Nadia Lockyer case

There’s a shocking twist in the saga of Alameda County Supervisor Nadia Lockyer and the incident at a Newark hotel that landed her in the hospital and a male acquaintance under police scrutiny.

We’re told that a sex tape of Nadia Lockyer and the man was given to her husband, state Treasurer Bill Lockyer, about six weeks before the Newark incident. The treasurer believed that the man, who has a history of arrests for alleged methamphetamine use, might make the tape public if forced to break off a romantic relationship with the supervisor.

Here’s the story, as we’ve pieced it together from sources knowledgeable about the law enforcement investigation into the Newark incident and the events that preceded it.

After receiving the sex tape and viewing a string of text messages between his wife and the man over the past three months, Bill Lockyer privately contacted Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley - a personal and political friend of the treasurer and his wife. Lockyer was at wit’s end as to what to do about his wife, and he hoped to persuade prosecutors to seek a court order barring the man from approaching Nadia Lockyer.

Bill Lockyer’s argument was that his wife was being stalked by the man, a 35-year-old San Jose resident whom he portrayed as a former boyfriend of Nadia Lockyer.

The investigation went nowhere, however, because prosecutors came to believe that Nadia Lockyer, 40, and the man were engaged in a consensual relationship, based partly on text messages and X-rated photos found on her computer.

O’Malley’s chief assistant, Kevin Dunleavy, confirmed only that the first official contact came when “our office was contacted by Nadia Lockyer’s office back in early January, and that Nadia felt she was being stalked” by the man.

“So we assigned a couple of inspectors from our office to do a threat management assessment,” he said, which included interviewing Nadia Lockyer but not the man.

“At the end of that interview, our inspectors came back and reported their evaluation that there was no stalking going on” – at least, nothing that could be legally construed as such, he said.

As for a sex tape?

O’Malley herself tells us “my office had nothing at all about a tape and blackmail.”

But the D.A., who acknowledged having a number of conversations with Bill Lockyer about his wife, said she was deeply concerned about Nadia Lockyer’s health, since she had lost considerable weight. O’Malley also had received sporadic text messages from Nadia Lockyer that suggested she was “in a downward spiral – in crisis.”

After news of the hotel incident went public, O’Malley turned over the criminal investigation to the state attorney general, citing Nadia Lockyer’s earlier work with a domestic violence program in the district attorney’s office. O’Malley said the information turned over included a string of text messages involving the man Nadia Lockyer had seen.

Before that, however, Bill Lockyer also contacted the father of Nadia Lockyer’s male acquaintance, telling him that his wife and the man’s son were in a “bad relationship” that had to end.

We’re told the father offered to help in destroying any copies of the sex tape and compromising photos that might be on his son’s computer or elsewhere – but then there was no follow-up.

The story might have died had police not been called to the Homewood Suites in Newark in the wee hours of Feb. 3, where they found Nadia Lockyer suffering from head and neck injuries. She told police she had been assaulted by the man her husband described as her ex-boyfriend. But even that incident has taken another twist.

Sources familiar with the case say the man gave a story of self-defense during the hotel encounter. His version differs sharply from the account given by Bill Lockyer. According to our sources, here’s how it goes:

For starters, the man – whom we’re not naming because he has not been arrested in the case – says there is nothing “ex” about the relationship, and that he’s not the stalker or potential suicide case that Bill Lockyer has characterized him as being.

The man, a construction worker, says his relationship with Nadia Lockyer has lasted more than a year, beginning when the two met at a Kaiser outpatient rehab program in 2010. Sources say she was enrolled for abusing alcohol and he for meth addiction.

The man also says he and Nadia Lockyer have communicated with each other since the hotel incident.

As he tells it, Nadia Lockyer invited him to visit her at the Homewood Suites on Feb. 3, where records show she had checked in.

He also says it was Nadia Lockyer who instigated the fight that night, because she suspected he was involved with other women.

Police, who answered a 911 call from the hotel about 2:40 a.m., have repeatedly interviewed Nadia Lockyer about the alleged attack.

Police referred all questions about the case to the attorney general’s office, which isn’t commenting. A spokesman for Bill Lockyer, who also served eight years as attorney general, said his boss had nothing further to say about the case.

Efforts to reach Nadia Lockyer were unsuccessful, and her acquaintance isn’t talking. She has checked into a center for treatment of an unspecified chemical dependency, and he was released from the Santa Clara County Jail late Thursday after being arrested last weekend for alleged drug possession and driving under the influence.

Howie: I HOPE that you and Al had a great time together for your birthday.

Social Butterfly: No big deal. As you stated before, “Great minds think alike”. And Wonderful Women On The World deserve to be recognized more than once!

Kent: Being a “regular” isn’t grounds for denying one of a status deserved. Since you didn’t lie here, but you admit that you lie “off blog”, I think you deserve an “Honorary Membership” to the LSOS Club.  So…really here…you’re just a thief . Okay, that we know for sure. Too bad I don’t have a club for thieves as you would surely be on it.

Ianthe: Thank you. But I am even more grateful that you had a change of heart and are still here with us. Be strong, and be well.

Happy Monday everyone!

State-Sanctioned Rape

Good morning!

So I’ve decided to mix it up a bit and change locations of where I blog…ya know just to make it more interesting than blogging in bed. :) (Calvin you inspired me – Congrats on the numero uno spot :)

I used to step to a different venue on Sundays but I rather like stepping out during the week as well. So hear I am at “Actual Cafe”, a very cool joint with big open windows, soothing music and a low-key crowd. And like my Cubano Con Leche made with condensed milk (yummy!), and my fresh HUGE raspberry morning bun (another “yummer” – I know not a word, but I’m back to creating words again, and since this is my blog, I can do that. By the way, feel free to do as well :) , I’m diggin’ this place big time – right now life just can’t get any better. It certainly is what I needed this morning.

I HOPE your day is starting off as well as mine.  However, I hate to say it, but if you live in some if the more “conservative”(I call them “controlling”) states and like to have a say over what can and what cannot happen to your body – read on.  I’m talking to you girls out there, especially the ones who support the republican party…because girls…those “boys” you support have figured out another way to control you through sexual assault –  rape and get away with it.

State-Sanctioned Rape: Trans-Vaginal Ultrasound Laws in Virginia, Texas, and Iowa

Virginia is poised to send two of the most abhorrent anti-choice bills to Governor Bob McDonnell to sign. The governor, eyes trained on a vice presidential bid, has indicated he will sign at least one if not both of the bills.

The first is a bill requiring the use of trans-vaginal ultrasound prior to a woman obtaining an abortion, the other is an egg-as-person bill.  Like other failed “personhood” bills, the Virginia provision would outlaw not only abortion but also forms of hormonal birth control.

Although the Governor has said he will consider the personhood bill he has been clear he would sign the forced ultrasound bill.  But let’s start calling this what it really is: state sanctioned rape.

In Virginia, rape is defined as the following:

§ 18.2-61. Rape.

A. If any person has sexual intercourse with a complaining witness, whether or not his or her spouse, or causes a complaining witness, whether or not his or her spouse, to engage in sexual intercourse with any other person and such act is accomplished (i) against the complaining witness’s will, by force, threat or intimidation of or against the complaining witness or another person; or (ii) through the use of the complaining witness’s mental incapacity or physical helplessness; or (iii) with a child under age 13 as the victim, he or she shall be guilty of rape.

I called and emailed McDonnell’s press secretary Jeff Caldwell asking if the forced vaginal ultrasound bill would in-fact overturn the rape statute.  Caldwell did not return my call or email by the time of publication.

During the debate Republican State Del. Todd Gilbert said:

“the vast majority of these cases [abortion] are matters of lifestyle convenience.” And,

“We think in matters of lifestyle convenience and in other matters that it is right and proper for a woman to be fully informed about what she is doing.”

NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia Executive Director Tarina Keene said of the ultrasound bill alluding to Gilbert’s ludicrous statement:

“This bill and comments on the House floor show the disrespect anti-choice lawmakers have for women’s personal and private reproductive decisions made with their doctors and their families.”

Gilbert embodies the nature of the debate in one sweeping statement; women choose abortion willy-nilly and women aren’t smart enough to make their own decisions about their bodies so big government and men will (he has since issued an apology.)

The ignorance Gilbert displayed is the norm and I encountered similar stupidity first hand when confronted by a group of men on Facebook regarding the Texas ultrasound law. This is the relevant passage from a my piece written for The Frisky on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade:

Last week I got into a heated exchange with a group of men on Facebook about abortion.  It was regarding the Texas law requiring a woman view an ultrasound prior to getting an abortion.  The man starting the thread praised the Texas Supreme Court for upholding the ultrasound law.

This opinion piece from The Houston Chronicle (via AlterNet) gives you an idea of what a the government mandated ultrasound law in Texas could mean:

According to the Guttmacher Institute, 88 percent of abortions occur during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Because the fetus is so small at this stage, traditional ultrasounds performed through the abdominal wall, “jelly on the belly,” often cannot produce a clear image. Therefore, a transvaginal probe is most often necessary, especially up to 10 weeks to 12 weeks of pregnancy. The probe is inserted into the vagina, sending sound waves to reflect off body structures to produce an image of the fetus. Under this new law, a woman’s vagina will be penetrated without an opportunity for her to refuse due to coercion from the so-called “public servants” who passed and signed this bill into law.

Under the Texas penal code penetration of a woman’s vagina without her consent is sexual assault.  In other words, it is rape  — which is punishable by imprisonment.

In my bizarre Facebook exchange mentioned above, a man brazenly told me rape by the state was analogous to paying taxes, “If you want to talk about government rape, let’s talk about paying taxes to the IRS!”

The conversation deteriorated from there, culminating with a man writing that I was “lucky your mom didn’t abort you” and to shut my “pie hole.”  It would have been simply hilarious if the premise of the conversation weren’t so disturbing.

And then there is Iowa – Iowa is no stranger to waging war on women’s reproductive rights, it has been the hobby of the religious right there for years.  State GOP Representatives have brought forward three bills; egg-as-personforced ultrasound and a so-called “Woman’s Right to Know” bill.

The forced ultrasound bill passed out of a House subcommittee and is on to the full Human Resources Committee – and then its on to the floor for full debate and vote.  This bill is likely to pass out of the House but State Senator Steve Sodders told me (if it did make it out of the house) it would certainly die in the Senate.  The Iowa Senate is the sane chamber dominated by Democrats functioning under the leadership of bulldog Senator Mike Gronstal.

While it may be true that the ultrasound bill will not pass in Iowa, these attempts at passing forced ultrasound bills and other anti-women legislation must continue to be called out no matter if the bill will pass or not.  And like Texas and Virginia, the Iowa ultrasound bill could lead to forced trans-vaginal ultrasounds.

Marge Baker, Executive Vice President of People for the American Way puts it this way when talking about Virgina’s bill but can be applied across the board, “…Virginia’s ultrasound bill takes the war on women to a new level. These politicians aren’t only invading women’s hospital rooms, they’re requiring women to undergo an incredibly invasive procedure without their consent. That’s not only insulting to women, it flies in the face of our values as a free nation.”

The bottom line is pro-choice legislators in state houses around the country as well as physicians and women’s rights activist must start drawing the clear line between state forced transvaginal ultrasounds and rape.

Readers: Can you believe some of the comments that these men are saying. I’m so sick of their attitude towards women…How can you compare paying taxes to the government to women getting raped? It is so cold and uncaring. I agree with the writer over the bizarre exchange – it would be hilarious if it wasn’t so very disturbing.

And I’m so sick of men making a comment one day and then apologizing for it the next day as if that just erases everything. Some apologies don’t mean shit anymore. It’s just a way to mollify those affected by the stupid statement. The meaning is still there, and the intention is still there. The apology is just a bunch of BS to get us to move on while the individual(s) continue to follow through with their sick plans. Don’t buy it.

It’s happening again. The “line” is not clear. What are we going to do? What are you going to do? Blog me.

Social Butterfly, Al: Thank you!

Lisa: Too sweet – thanks for sharing.

Anna of Guam: I like it. I think I’ll celebrate a day early next year. HOPEfully my love will remember as well.

Calin: I take it you read the above article that I posted. This is exactly what you are talking about with respect the female voters “voting away the benefits other women got for them through sweat and anguish and any chance of gaining parity from men”.

The forum is open – blog me.

Good morning!

The Lying Sack Of Shit category, a sub category to the category, “Political Powwow”, in honor or recognizing ( but not limited to)  Lying Sack Of Shit politicians, was added to my blog on December 31st of last year, 2011. Which inspired the Lying Sack Of Shit Club, Aka LSOS Club, a few days later.

I thought today was a good day to recognize those who are members so far, and to congratulate them for making the list. If I missed anyone or if you have anyone that you want added, blog me.

If you are not sure your candidate fits the definition of a LSOS, I pulled this from the Urban Dictionary website to help you make your decision. It seems there a quite a few “thumbs up”supporting this definition, but hey, this is just one definition of an LSOS.  If you’ve got a better one that fits, please do blog it as well.

Urban Dictionary: lying sack of shit

82 up, 10 down

n. (metaphorical, yet, often simultaneously literal) one who habitually and effortlessly utters falsehoods in a most blatant and profane manner, all the while maintaining a lackadaisical appearance of ingenuousness; despite, or perhaps, due to the fact that their entire corporeal membrane is filled to bursting with an inexhaustible supply of foul, though nitrogen-rich fecal mendacities waiting to be excreted into their victims’ ears

I can’t believe you’d give any credence to anything that lying sack of shit says!
