KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan has pardoned a woman who was raped by a family member but then jailed for adultery, a statement from the presidential palace has said, in a case that highlights deep concerns about women’s rights in the country.
It remained unclear whether the 21-year-old-woman, known as Gulnaz, would still have to marry the man who attacked her, her cousin’s husband, after an earlier release offer which stipulated they must marry.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s palace issued the statement pardoning Gulnaz late on Thursday, a rare pardon in such a case in staunchly conservative Muslim Afghanistan.
Her case attracted international attention after she took part in a documentary film commissioned by the European Union but later withheld.
Gulnaz had eventually agreed to the condition she marry her attacker under the earlier release offer but her lawyer said the release granted this week did not depend on her going through with the marriage.
It was not clear whether she still intended to marry the man, her lawyer, Kimberley Motley, said. Her attacker is serving a 7-year prison term for the crime.
Motley said she hoped her client would be released shortly, and that there was a place for her in a women’s shelter.
The palace statement said Justice Minister Habibullah Ghalib asked a panel of top legal officials to order her release. Gulnaz sought a pardon from Karzai earlier this week.
“After assessing Gulnaz’s case, (they) decided that her remaining sentence in jail should be pardoned under the current rules and regulations of the country and she should be released,” the palace statement said.
Gulnaz was initially sentenced to two years in jail for “adultery by force,” which was later increased to 12 years on appeal. She was given the choice of marriage or serving a jail sentence.
Her sentence was then cut to three years after a third appeal, and the requirement for her to marry was dropped.
Gulnaz became pregnant as a result of the attack and gave birth to a daughter in the Badam Bagh women’s prison in Kabul almost a year ago.
Motley also welcomed what she said was a decision to review the cases of other women in the same jail.
“The judiciary has effectively supported the Elimination of Violence Against Women Act by allowing for her to be released, for allowing for her to be pardoned,” Motley said.
“Precedent definitely has been set. As I understand it, the judiciary today was also reviewing the files of other women in Badam Bagh,” she said.
The presidential palace declined to comment on whether other cases were under review.
FILM BLOCKED
The film in which Gulnaz featured, a documentary on women in prison, was blocked from release by the EU mission in Afghanistan over fears it might compromise the safety of the women involved because it showed their identity.
The film-makers have been pushing for the film to be released, and say Gulnaz wanted her story to be told.
“I made a promise to these women that I would get their stories out. I am glad that I’ve been able to honor that promise to Gulnaz,” said the film’s director Clementine Malpas.
“I still hope that our film can be released, so people can hear the stories of the other women, and perhaps increase their chance of getting justice as well.”
EU spokeswoman Lynne O’Donnell welcomed news Gulnaz would be freed but declined to comment on whether the film would be released.
Gulnaz’s case had been condemned widely by human rights groups. An online petition started by Motley has been signed by more than 6,000 people.
Motley said she is still trying to ascertain whether the attacker will also be released if they agree to marry.

Soo much to talk about today. My mind is twirling - sound like someone we all know? Speaking of Cain – Is he “done”? In my opinion, I think he’s done, don’t you?
Anyway, enough about Cain. Let’s talk about a man who is the president: Obama. Another huge thing to praise Obama on is his first-ever national HIV/AIDS strategy:
“Since I took office, we’ve had a robust national dialogue on HIV/AIDS. Members of my administration have fanned out across the country to meet people living with HIV; to meet researchers, faith leaders, medical providers and private sector partners. We’ve spoken to over 4,000 people. And out of all those conversations, we drafted a new plan to combat this disease. Last year, we released that plan — a first-ever national HIV/AIDS strategy.”
~President Obama
Obama talked about it yesterday morning at the World AIDS Day event - Did you all catch it? Unfortunately I tuned it too late to see Obama give his talk. In case you missed it too, here it is:
Reporting from Washington and Johannesburg– President Obama declared a new day in the fight against AIDS in the U.S. and around the world as he unveiled a plan to make life-saving drug treatments available to millions more people.
The Obama administration will redirect $50 million to prevention and treatment programs across the country and will aim to help provide anti-retroviral drugs to more than 6 million people around the world, an increase of 2 million from the previous goal.
“We can beat this disease,” Obama told a crowd gathered in Washington to mark World AIDS Day on Thursday. “We just have to keep at it, steady, persistent … every day until we get to zero.”
The remarks came at an event that included former President George W. Bush addressing the audience by satellite from Tanzania. Obama gave credit to his predecessor, praising Bush’s “bold leadership” in fighting AIDS in the U.S. and Africa.
Obama’s announcement drew praise from AIDS activists at a time when he hopes to renew the devotion of the liberal base that helped elect him in 2008. Activists periodically have criticized him, complaining that he could do more to improve access to treatment drugs, despite the budget-cutting mood in Congress.
In his address at George Washington University, Obama called on other countries to contribute more to the cause. “China and other major economies are in a position now to transition in a way that can help more people,” he said.
Around the world, activists used the day to warn that severe shortfalls in global AIDS funding would cost many lives, especially in hard-hit regions of southern Africa.
The World Health Organization said the sustained global investment in treating AIDS over the last decade had saved millions of lives, cutting AIDS-related deaths by 22% in the last five years. Studies have shown that suppressing the virus through treatment reduces its spread to patients’ partners by as much as 96%.
Obama is reallocating money that Congress already has approved for public health purposes, directing $35 million to state AIDS drug assistance programs and $15 million to the Ryan White program, which supports care provided by HIV clinics.
As part of the overseas initiative, the U.S. will provide anti-retroviral drugs over the next two years to 1.5 million HIV-positive pregnant women so that they won’t pass on the virus to their children.
In an effort to reduce transmission of the virus in eastern and southern Africa, Washington will distribute more than 1 billion condoms and support more than 4.7 million voluntary medical male circumcisions, a procedure that dramatically reduces the risk of female-to-male transmission.
“These are significant resources the president is devoting,” said John Peller, policy director of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. “There are always things that can be improved. Given the congressional environment that the president is in, and the gridlock he faces, the shortcomings that are out there are not entirely his fault.”
In the U.S., roughly 1.2 million Americans are living with HIV, but only 28% have the virus under control, U.S. officials said this week. More than 30 million people have died of AIDS-related causes around the world and 34 million are living with HIV.
Bono, who is the lead singer of the Irish rock band U2 and an AIDS activist, and blues singer Alicia Keys met privately Thursday with members of House and Senate appropriations committees. Bono said he was impressed with support from Democrats and Republicans for international AIDS prevention programs — telling a divided Congress to take a moment to feel good.
“This is probably the one thing that America seems in agreement about,” Bono told reporters after the meeting. “You’re very good at beating yourself up in this country, but just for today you should realize that you have personally — every taxpayer in this country has paid for 5 million people to stay alive.”
The Global Fund had targeted $17 billion in donations to scale up existing programs, or $20 billion to expand successful programs, hoping to save 10 million lives between now and 2016. Simply maintaining existing programs would require donations of $12 billion to $13 billion, but the fund will instead disburse $10 billion.
That shortfall drew fire in Africa.
“HIV/AIDS is a multigenerational commitment,” said Dr. Peter Fourie of the AIDS Foundation of South Africa. “There’s almost a sense of betrayal because the First World made a commitment at the end of the last century on AIDS funding, and then to just rip it away is very cynical.
“With the decrease in funding there will obviously be less people who will be able to be tested and less people who will be able to go on drugs,” he said. “More people will die and suffer.”
UNAIDS estimates $28 billion to $50 billion would be needed every year from 2010 to 2015 to provide universal access to treatment and to start to defeat AIDS. More than half of the people in low-income countries who need anti-retroviral drugs are not getting them, UNAIDS said, and in sub-Saharan Africa, more than 70% of people living with HIV are girls and young women.

So…How shocking is that statement? It says a lot about Fox News, but hey, nothing we didn’t already know. But what does that say about their viewers? It’s one thing to be ignorant, but these viewers minds are being infused with lies and distortions that they think are true, which is much worse.
I HOPE you Fox viewers who tune in here are reading.
The poll surveyed New Jersey residents about the uprisings in Egypt and the Middle East, and where they get their news sources. The study, which controlled for demographic factors like education and partisanship, found that “people who watch Fox News are 18-points less likely to know that Egyptians overthrew their government” and “6-points less likely to know that Syrians have not yet overthrown their government” compared to those who watch no news.
Overall, 53% of all respondents knew that Egyptians successfully overthrew Hosni Mubarak and 48% knew that Syrians have yet to overthrow their government.
Dan Cassino, a political science professor at Fairleigh Dickinson, explained in a statement, “Because of the controls for partisanship, we know these results are not just driven by Republicans or other groups being more likely to watch Fox News. Rather, the results show us that there is something about watching Fox News that leads people to do worse on these questions than those who don’t watch any news at all.”
This isn’t the first study that has found that Fox News viewers more misinformed in comparison to others. Last year, a study from the University of Maryland found that Fox News viewers were more likely to believe false information about politics.

So…the latest: The Super Committee failed…no surprise there. Loved Obama’s answer to Congress trying to get out of deficit deal, to undo the automatic cuts that go into affect in 2013. His answer? He simply said “NO”.
WASHINGTON — Heralding a rare moment of bipartisan agreement, President Barack Obama signed into law Monday legislation aimed at helping unemployed veterans find work while putting more cash in the hands of companies with government contracts.
The legislation, which creates tax breaks for companies that hire jobless veterans, marks the first proposal from Obama’s $447 billion jobs bill to be signed into law. The rest of the package of new taxes and spending has largely failed to garner support from Republican lawmakers.
“Because Democrats and Republicans came together, I’m proud to sign those proposals into law,” Obama said during a signing ceremony Monday.
Looming over the brief moment of unity, however, was the apparent failure of lawmakers from both parties to agree on $1.2 trillion in spending cuts ahead of a Wednesday deadline by a special committee. While Obama didn’t directly address the looming deadline, he said the American people deserve bold, bipartisan action.
“My message to every member of Congress is keep going. Keep working. Keep finding more ways to put partisanship aside and put more Americans back to work,” he said.
The veterans’ legislation had overwhelming support from both parties, with the House passing the measure 422-0 and the Senate approving it 95-0. In addition to the tax breaks for businesses, it also beefs up job-training and counseling programs for unemployed veterans.
The legislation also repeals a 2006 law that would have required the federal, state and local governments to withhold 3 percent of their payments to nearly all contractors. That statute, which doesn’t take effect until 2013, was supposed to pressure contractors to pay their taxes in full, but lawmakers now say the law would deny cash to companies that need it to hire more workers.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said passage of the bill showed that it is possible for both parties to reach a consensus.
“By focusing on areas of agreement – rather than partisan stimulus bills – we can pass legislation to help foster job growth. Neither of these measures alone is going to solve the jobs crisis, but they’ll provide relief to job creators and help American veterans,” McConnell said.
McConnell praised Obama for inviting Republican Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts to attend the ceremony. It was Brown who had introduced the 3 percent withholding bill.
Brown was joined on stage with the president by two other GOP lawmakers – Florida Rep. Jeff Miller and Tennessee Rep. Diane Black – as well as a handful of Democrats.
The tax credits for hiring veterans will cost the government an estimated $95 million – a tiny fraction of Obama’s overall jobs plan. The credits would be as much as $9,600 for companies hiring disabled vets who have looked for work for more than half a year. The size of the credit would be based on the worker’s salary and how long the worker was unemployed.
The programs would be financed mostly by extending a fee the Veterans Affairs Department charges to back mortgages.
Erasing the withholding requirement for contractors would reduce federal revenues by an estimated $11.2 billion over the coming decade. It would be paid for by making it harder for some elderly people to qualify for Medicaid by changing the formula used to determine their eligibility.
Many economists have said annulling the withholding law would have a minimal impact on hiring.

General Info: Thanks for your post. A few months late, but I appreciate the info as it was new to me.
Sally: I meant to say something to you yesterday, but in the moment I was responding to you, I was all wrapped up in explaining the “issues” of my blog. So sorry to hear about your experience with both genders of the police. How humiliating.
Erica: You’re asking for the OTWs to help, when the OTWs have been asking for support from the whites and haven’t gotten it. I’m not talking to you per se, and I’m not talking for OTWs, but from what has been said here by OTWs, I doubt the OTWs are going to give much help to this cause when the whites haven’t helped them in their causes. Some, like Cynthia, are smiling saying, “What goes around, comes around”. Can’t blame ‘em.
Barbara: I realize this pepper spray is nothing compared to thousands of pounds of water pressure and broken bones. However new news to me, I just got an e-mail from Change.org and this was what was reported:
“When students covered their eyes with their clothing, police forced open their mouths and pepper-sprayed down their throats,” Brown said. “Several of these students were hospitalized.”
But in my opinion, it shouldn’t have happened then and it shouldn’t happen now. This cowardice police brutality needs to change. Click here to sign the petition.
Paulina: Thank you. I don’t get the opportunity to write like I used to but I do enjoy it when I can. Oh and you can thank Robert for that “mantra”. I rather like it myself, as you can tell. But I would prefer, if it wasn’t something true, that needed to be said.
Hank: Thanks for sharing your story. It was a roundabout way to make a point but I’m happy that you did. :) This is a place to vent, as well as what ever else you want to do. So…Welcome. I HOPE that you’ll continue reading and commenting. And I bet your daughter is proud of you as well.
Ruth: You’re welcome. I too am grateful…grateful that my blog has following who will do something.
HOWIE: Nice to see you back. How are you? What’s up?
From the Desk of Anonz: Thanks for tuning in and keeping me and my readers well informed with information we never would have in a timely manner, if it weren’t for you.
Readers: Let’s prove that we are not all over the political map, and support Obama. We want him for a second term. I am not against a woman president, but the last thing we need are for our democratic votes to get split, and end up with a republican president. Everything bad you can imagine, will happen, if that happens. I’m not willing to go down that road. I HOPE you’re with me on this.
Cain: That story is just disgusting. How people can care more about getting assistance for their football team than a person who has been sexually molested? I’m right there with you on your thoughts.
Melody: Obama passes a Veteran’s Job Bill, the fist lady Michalle Obama supports Veterans at NASCAR, and she gets booed by the crowd. Yep, there is something wrong with this picture.
Out of time – got to run- blog me.

Okay…so we all know that the republican’s spread lies about President Obama. They’ve been doing it for years and don’t think for a moment it’s going to stop. In fact it is getting to the point where almost every word that comes out of their mouths about Obama is a lie. Republican presidential candidates are even going against their own beliefs when they realize their views are the same same as Obama’s. Once again it is not about what is best for our country; it is all about getting the black man out of the White House. Plan on it getting worse as the months get closer to the 2012 election.
The latest, is that Obama said that “Americans are lazy”. This too is a BIG FAT LIE.
Republican presidential candidates Rick Perry and Mitt Romney both claim President Barack Obama said that “Americans are lazy.” He didn’t. To the contrary, Obama has consistently and repeatedly praised American workers as the “most productive in the world,” a bit of boosterism he has repeated dozens of times. His recent words — “we’ve been a little bit lazy, I think, over the last couple of decades” — actually referred to collective efforts to promote foreign investment in the U.S., and not to American workers or voters as individuals. Perry and Romney simply rip those words out of their context in order to mislead.
Perry used the president’s words to lead off his latest campaign ad, called “Lazy,” which began airing on national cable TV as well as broadcast and cable TV in Iowa on Nov. 16.
The 30-second ad begins with a video snippet of Obama saying, “We’ve been a little bit lazy I think over the last couple of decades.” It then cuts to Perry saying, “Can you believe that? That’s what our president thinks is wrong with America? That Americans are lazy? That’s pathetic. It’s time to clean house in Washington.”
Perry, Nov. 15: In recent weeks our president has taken to pointing the finger of blame instead of taking responsibility. He has called us soft and lazy, and he has said Americans lack ambition and imagination.
Mr. President, Americans aren’t soft or lazy, and Americans do not lack ambition or imagination, Washington has failed us.
Romney joined in the “Did you hear what he called you?” game in a stump speech in South Carolina the same day:
Romney, Nov. 15: Sometimes, I just don’t think that President Obama understands America. I say that because this week — or was it last week? — he said that Americans are lazy. I don’t think that describes America. Before that, I think it was in October, he was saying we have lost our inventiveness, and our ambition. Before that he was saying other disparaging things about Americans. I just don’t think he understands — he was saying we just weren’t working hard enough. I don’t think he gets what’s happening in this country.
Perry’s and Romney’s comments refer to three recent statements by Obama. We’ll start with the “lazy” comment, since it was featured in the ad and is the one most clearly distorted. It came during a CEO business summit Q & A hosted by APEC (Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation) in Hawaii on Nov. 12. Obama was asked about impediments to Chinese investments in the United States.
Obama, Nov. 12: Well, this is an issue, generally. I think it’s important to remember that the United States is still the largest recipient of foreign investment in the world. And there are a lot of things that make foreign investors see the U.S. as a great opportunity — our stability, our openness, our innovative free market culture.
But we’ve been a little bit lazy, I think, over the last couple of decades. We’ve kind of taken for granted — well, people will want to come here and we aren’t out there hungry, selling America and trying to attract new business into America. And so one of the things that my administration has done is set up something called SelectUSA that organizes all the government agencies to work with state and local governments where they’re seeking assistance from us, to go out there and make it easier for foreign investors to build a plant in the United States and put outstanding U.S. workers back to work in the United States of America.
See that, Obama didn’t call you lazy. He said the U.S. has gotten lazy about promoting and attracting new business to America. In fact, he called you “outstanding U.S. workers.”
Onto Exhibit B. This one comes from remarks Obama made at a campaign event in San Francisco on Oct. 26. The context: Obama was making a pitch for further government investments in new roads, bridges, airports, wireless networks and other infrastructure.
Obama, Oct. 26: We used to have the best stuff. Anybody been to Beijing Airport lately? Or driven on high-speed rail in Asia or Europe? What’s changed? Well, we’ve lost our ambition, our imagination, and our willingness to do the things that built the Golden Gate Bridge and Hoover Dam and unleashed all the potential in this country.
And now, Exhibit C, the “soft” comment. It comes via an interview Obama did with Orlando TV station WESH on Sept. 29. Obama said it was “challenging” for young people coming up in the wake of one of the worst financial crises and recessions in American history.
Obama, Sept. 29: But even before the financial crisis hit, one of the reasons that I ran for president was that wages, incomes had flat-lined at the same time that costs were going up. I think people felt that opportunities were becoming more constricted for the next generation.
And that’s why making sure that we’re revamping our education system, making sure we’ve got world class infrastructure, investing in basic science, research and technology, making sure that we are moving manufacturing back to the United States, and that we are being tough with our trading partners — making sure that they’re not taking advantage of us. There are a lot of things we can do.
The way I think about it is, this is a great, great country that had gotten a little soft and we didn’t have that same competitive edge that we needed over the last couple of decades. We need to get back on track.
But I still wouldn’t trade our position with any country’s on earth. We still have the best universities, the best scientists, and best workers in the world; we still have the most dynamic economic system in the world. So we just need to bring all those things together.
So in this very speech, he calls Americans the “best workers in the world.”
In fact, we did a word search on “most productive workers” on the White House website and found Obama has used that phrase to describe American workers in 26 different speeches. In those speeches and others, he calls Americans “innovative,” “dynamic” and “hard-working.”
Here are a few examples:
“For all of the challenges we face, we continue to have the best universities, some of the most productive workers, the most innovative companies, the most adventurous entrepreneurs on Earth.” – Aug. 8, 2011.
“We continue to have some of the best workers in the world, the most productive workers in the world. And we have the kind of dynamism and entrepreneurship in our economy that’s going to serve us well in the long term.” — Nov. 23, 2009.
“And we got the most productive workers on Earth. We’ve got the best workers right here in Elkhart — who are willing to put hard time and do whatever it takes to make sure a company succeeds.” — Feb. 9, 2009, in Elkhart, Ind.
“For two years I traveled across this country. I met thousands of people — hard-working middle-class Americans who shared with me their hopes and their hardships. These are the men and the women who form the backbone of our economy. The most productive workers in the world. They do their jobs. They build the products and provide the services that drive America’s prosperity.” — Jan. 30, 2009.
“We need to remind ourselves, we still have the most innovative economy in the world. We still have the most productive workers in the world.” — March 11, 2010.
“We have the most productive workers in the world, the greatest universities and capacity for innovation, an incredible amount of resilience, entrepreneurship, and flexibility, and the most diverse and creative population of any major economy.” — March 13, 2009.
“We still have, by far, the world’s largest and most vibrant economy. We have the most productive workers, the finest universities and the freest markets. The men and women in this room are living testimony that American industry is still the source of the most dynamic companies, and the most ingenious entrepreneurs.” — Feb. 7, 2011.
We could go on, but we think you get the idea.

Readers: Even though Obama didn’t say that “Americans are lazy”, I’m going to say it. Because we are lazy when it comes to finding the truth. Information crosses our path so quickly these days, and lots of info goes viral. Lies go viral. The above article is a perfect example.
Those that oppose Obama are going to ride this “Americans are Lazy” lie as far as they can take it. Many people believe that if they hear something enough, then it must be true. Another BIG FAT LIE.
So, my request from you is that we not be lazy. Don’t believe everything you hear – especially if you are a regular viewer of FOX news. Yes, I know you tune in here too. FOX spreads lies. Do your home work – More importantly, put your biased (I’m being nice here) beliefs behind you – Search for the truth.
In fact, I’m going to make it easy for all. I’m going to help you. In the right hand column I have added another link. It is the link for FactCheck.org. FactCheck.org is a nonpartisan, nonprofit “consumer advocate” for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics. They monitor the factual accuracy of what is said by major U.S. political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews and news releases. Their goal is to apply the best practices of both journalism and scholarship, and to increase public knowledge and understanding.
So…Whenever you hear something that just doesn’t seem logical, or even if it does, before you make a judgement…before you believe it to be true or untrue…check the facts – don’t be lazy. Use it. News travels fast and hard and we need to stay in the know. We do not have the luxury of being lazy anymore.
Luke: Considering the republican candidates are pretty much all incompetent losers, I’d say you’re pretty right on with your comment.
Rose: My sentiments exactly! Love it. Activist, Dorli Rainey is definitely not lazy. As she says, “Time is of the essence”. She is so right. Thanks for posting.
I’ll end with this…In the words of Dorli Rainey, let’s all go one step outside our comfort zone.
It’s Friday…
Peace out.
