Wonderful Women Of The World

Good morning!

Today, I want to honor Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Jody Williams, as a wonderful woman of the world.

In more than 100 years of Nobel Peace Prizes, only a dozen women have ever won. Civil-rights and peace activist Jody Williams, received the award in 1997 as the chief strategist of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which established the ?rst global treaty banning antipersonnel mines.

Williams believes that peace is de?ned by human (not national) securityand that it must be achieved through sustainable development, environmental justice, and meeting people’s basic needs. To this end, she co-founded the Nobel Women’s Initiative, endorsed by six of seven living female Peace laureates. She chairs the effort to support activists, researchers, and others working toward peace, justice, and equality for women and thus humanity. Williams also continues to ?ght for the total global eradication of landmines.

“A tireless crusader against war and the lingering effects that armed conflict has wrought around the world.”

Forbes, “100 Most Powerful Women in the World,” November 2004

I almost always end my write with “Peace Out” or Peace & Love: “Live it, Give it”

But what does “peace” really mean?

Williams is now teaming up with five other female peace laureates to empower women to fight violence, injustice and inequality.

In  a TedTalk, Williams tell us what “peace” means to her:

“…Sustainable peace with justice and equality…with which the majority of people on this planet have access to enough resources to live dignified lives..where these people have enough access to education and to heath care so that they can live in freedom from want and freedom from fear.”

Watch it:

Readers: What does “peace” mean to you? Blog me your thought…ideas…whatever.

On another note, I can not tell you how sad I am that Keith Olbermann and MSNBC have decided to call it quite. I will miss his honest, sincere, approach of giving us the facts…telling it like it is, and exposing the rhetoric and lies. Not to mention his compassion, understanding, and humanity in delivering the news. That was a big part of my likability towards Olbermann.

Olbermann said goodbye last night on his show:

There were many occasions, particularly in the last two-and-a-half years, where all that surrounded the show — but never the show itself — was just too much for me. But your support and loyalty and, if I may use the word, insistence, ultimately required me to keep going. My gratitude to you is boundless and if you think I’ve done any good here, imagine how it looked from this end… this may be the only television program wherein the host was much more in awe of the audience than vice versa.

Keith: You have done good. I wish you well, and I will indeed follow you, wherever your career leads you. I’m sure you have plenty more to say.

Dean: Yes, I was interested in being a host for this event, but I was not given all of the details and what was expected of me, therefore I made no commitment to be a host. I was only just recently aware that I was added as a “host” without my okay.

So although I feel bad that you purchased a ticket, and I apologize that you did because you were falsely informed that I would be there, the upset should not be at me. However, on the upside, the party is for a good cause, and it should be fun, so I suggest you go and have a great time. And if you don’t mind, blog me and let me know how it went.

Gale: I am having personal experience with that right now.

AH: I was so sorry to hear that your trip back to the 20′s was not roaring fun, but just the opposite; a complete disgusting, not to mention terrifying experience for Bita and the other three girls. I have no doubt that those six policemen will be roaring loud the rest of their dreaded lives. I have no pity for them. Please give Bita and the girls my best. I am sure they are getting lots of support from you and Adam.

“PeaCE” ouT….

WikiLeaks Whistleblower Arrested In Zurich

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 21st January 2011

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

Have any of you been keeping up with WikiLeaks? I have been reading about Rudolf Elmer, a former Swiss banker and currently, the “WikiLeaks whistleblower”.

During his 20 years that he worked for  Julius Baer, a highly reputed Swiss bank, Elmer has been collecting evidence, that includes details of about 2,000 accounts held in offshore financial centers. Some of these account holders are not only, business leaders and lawmakers from the U.S., Britain and Asia, but also some ”high net worth” celebrities. It seems quite a few people have the same idea of secreting money away for tax-evasion purposes. Not a surprise.

And no surprise either that Elmer, who describes himself as “a culprit, a witness, a whistleblower, an activist and a reformer, and who has previously leaked banking documents to WikiLeaks, had plans to hand the rest of these files over to WikiLeaks last Monday.

He (Rudolph Elemer) has been hailed by Britain’s Observer newspaper as “the most important and boldest whistleblower in Swiss banking history.”

Elmer, 54, worked for Swiss investment banking giant Julius Baer from 1987 until 2002, eventually serving as the chief operating officer of the company’s subsidiary in the Cayman Islands.

While there, he claims to have uncovered evidence that the company was helping its clients evade tax.

~CNN World

Here’s the write:

Swiss Whistleblower Rudolf Elmer To Hand Over Offshore Banking Secrets To WikiLeaks

LONDON — A former Swiss banker was on Monday due to hand over files to WikiLeaks which he alleges detail attempts by wealthy business leaders and lawmakers to evade tax payments.

Rudolf Elmer, a former employee of Swiss-based Bank Julius Baer, told Britain’s Observer newspaper on Sunday that the documents include details of about 2,000 accounts held in offshore financial centers. He says the account holders include “high net worth” celebrities, business leaders and lawmakers from the U.S., Britain and Asia.

Elmer, who has previously leaked banking documents to the secret-spilling site, was scheduled to hold a news conference later Monday at London’s Frontline Club with a WikiLeaks representative. Vaughan Smith, the owner of the Frontline Club, said he couldn’t say who the representative would be.

Smith’s 10-bedroom mansion in eastern England has been serving as a makeshift headquarters for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange since he was released on bail on Dec. 16. Assange has compared his bail conditions – which largely confine him to Smith’s home – to “high-tech house arrest,” but has recently promised that the flow of leaked documents would increase.

Elmer’s press conference comes two days before he is due to appear before a Zurich regional court to answer charges of coercion and violating Switzerland’s strict banking secrecy laws.

He told the Observer newspaper he planned to disclose the new set of files to expose activities in offshore financial centers. “The one thing on which I am absolutely clear is that the banks know, and the big boys know, that money is being secreted away for tax-evasion purposes,” he was quoted as telling the newspaper.

Elmer was just arrested in Zurich.

Whistleblower Swiss banker Rudolf Elmer arrested in Zurich

Zurich: Just hours after his trial on fresh charges of breaching banking secrecy, whistleblower Rudolf Elmer was arrested in Zurich. Elmer had faced a trial in Zurich on Wednesday too, but he escaped a prison sentence for making secret data public in 2007 and threatening an employee at his former employers, with a fine of 7200 Swiss Francs.

However, even before he could heave a sigh of relief, when Elmer got back to his home in a Zurich suburb, there were eight policemen waiting for him. His wife claimed their house was thoroughly searched and Elmer was taken away.

Swiss police say Elmer was arrested on the suspicion of breaking banking secrecy laws by handing over CDs earlier this week in London.

Earlier, Elmer had said that his former employers had set private detectives after him and his family. He had also admitted he sent a mail from an anonymous email id under pressure but denied having sent a bomb threat to the bank.

Elmer claimed he wanted to expose large scale tax evasion and just before his arrest, he said he was ready to face the consequences.

“I am on the right side of the street in fighting this abuse so if I have to go to jail I say let’s go,” said the former banker.

Now, the data that Elmer had handed over is being analysed by WikiLeaks, a whistleblowing website. Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks now claims that this information will soon be released.

Repealing Obamacare

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 20th January 2011

Good morning!

The big day to repeal Obamacare was yesterday. Democrats got their drive back, while Republicans just kind of wanted to be done with it; not quite relishing their “big moment”. What happened Repugs? Is it ’cause those that didn’t want health care reform in the first place are now deciding that it’s a good thing, and they want it?

O’Donnell vs Franks: “Debating Gun Control”

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 19th January 2011

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

I saw this clip last night from The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.  It is in regards to gun control and the legal amount of bullets in a gun’s magazine clip. I could see the anger and frustration from O’Donnell and as watched and listened, I felt the anger erupt in myself.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Readers: Can you believe Rep. Trent Franks? What is this BS “children of God”? He couldn’t even answer the damn question. He’s frustrated about this?! I wanted to crawl through my TV and strangle the guy.

Why is it that Franks can give a hypothetical scenario, a reckless one at that,  and ask O’Donnell to give it thought, but he refuses to look at it from another view, a more realistic view….to entertain another hypothetical scenario? Once again, Republicans don’t want to accept the facts; they just want it their way regardless if it makes no sense, and is not for the betterment of all.

As I watch this again this morning, I can feel my blood start to boil again. Can anyone watch this and actually side with Franks? Unfortunately there are many, or we wouldn’t be having this debate.

Thoughts? Rants? Blog me.

Doug: I knew you would like this.

Zen Lill: Yes, it was fun catching up with you!

Greprom: Thanks for coming back in and commenting. It seems so simple to me. I have always believed that our planet had everything that we needed to be healthy. I have always thought that balance in life was important in many areas. What I didn’t know until now is that if there was a proper and correct balance, that if administered to our body consistently, we would be able to function at our optimum indefinitely. Unfortunately now, even if we knew what the correct proportions were, we have already destroyed our air and water quality, vital factors in the equation of living indefinitely.

And yes, in regards to cloning, isn’t it just like humans to instead of sustaining what we have, care for it in a way that prevents destruction and disintegration, we contaminate it, destroy it, and then look for another way to create it again. Crazy.

Peace out.

Hans Rosling’s 200 Countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 18th January 2011

Good morning!
Readers: I like this. I thought you might too. For those of you who saw this yesterday morning, please disregard. :)

Hans Rosling’s famous lectures combine enormous quantities of public data with a sport’s commentator’s style to reveal the story of the world’s past, present and future development. Now he explores stats in a way he has never done before – using augmented reality animation. In this spectacular section of ‘The Joy of Stats’ he tells the story of the world in 200 countries over 200 years using 120,000 numbers – in just four minutes. Plotting life expectancy against income for every country since 1810, Hans shows how the world we live in is radically different from the world most of us imagine.

Pretty Cool huh?
