Moore On Maddow Live, Obama Signs The Repeal Of “DADT”

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 22nd December 2010

Good morning!

So…has anyone been watching Rachel Maddow’s “Leadership in America” live show @ 92Y the past two days? Last night she interviewed Michael Moore. If you didn’t catch the segment, here it is.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Readers: I haven’t blogged about Wikileaks at all here, and it has been one of the hot topics in the media. What has been on your mind in respect to all of the chatter? Do you agree Moore in regards to full disclosure of our government? What do you think of the date rape charges against Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks?

I can say one thing, I loved what Michael Moore had to say about supporting women who have been raped and abused in our society. I wish there were more men like him that would stand up and fight in support of the plight.

And almost last but certainly not least, I want to recognize that Obama signed the appeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. Yay! – This is a day for celebration!

I tried to post the video of Obama’s speech but unfortunately had no luck. Click here to see.

Thoughts?  You know what to do – Blog me.

Anonymous: Well…in regards to the compliments, all I can say is…Thank youa girl loves to be recognized and appreciated. As far as what you would like to do….all is can say is…Stand in line. :)

Morris: Okay. I hear you. “Maybe” I will be, as Lloyd puts it, “forthcoming with the 411″, the next time I’m “going to a party at…”.  HOPE is always good. I speak of HOPE a lot here, so I guess there is no reason why my readers can’t HOPE too. :) Season’s Greeting to you as well!

Bob: Oh, I laughed at that one, but I know I shouldn’t.

Peter: Gee, I wonder why anyone would try to veto a bill that would protect children from abuse? Sickening. Just when will that Cardinal be ousted? Hafa Adai.

Terri: That has never stopped any man from trying.

PEacE OUt…

“Repeal Amendment”: Just What Is This?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 20th December 2010

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

First of all I wanted to recognize that the Senate voted to end “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” And to say thank you to all of those who fought hard to help end this. And of course congratulations to those whom have had unpleasant experiences, to say the least, because of this senseless policy. I am sure the end of this will bring you great joy.

So…who’s heard of the “Repeal Amendment“? I am not that familiar with it myself but it’s been getting some online ink. And since it is an idea pushed by the Tea Party and Republican luminaries, I am highly suspect that it is not in my/our best interest.

The “Repeal Amendment” in a nut shell is about those who want to protect the Constitution, and at the same time want to change it. Wha’at?? Yes, you heard me right. The idea is to get Congress to send out to the states a “Repeal Amendment”, which would allow a two-thirds majority of state legislatures to overturn any bill passed by Congress.

So what is this really saying? Really, it simply means that the state legislatures would have more power, and the people in those states would have less. Now, don’t you think that is kind of funny that coming from a party who wants less government, a party who is all about protecting the Constitution, a party who is all about protecting their freedoms, now wants to take the power from the people and put it into the hands of government? No, really, it’s not funny; it’s just pretty typical.

Here’s a segment take from Rachel Maddow’s Blog:

It’s also run by people whom the rest of us might consider a little out there. Back before Thanksgiving, the last time the Repeal Amendment crowd got big play, we noted that what these folks really want is to repeal the 17th Amendment — to take away your vote for U.S. Senate and give it back to your state legislators. Here’s Tea Party in Action director Marianne Moran, talking to Newsmax:

What it does is, it sort of restores the Constitution. Our Constitution has been ignored for a long period of time. The 10th Amendment is essentially useless, because of 50 years of bad Supreme Court cases and problems with the 17th Amendment….

Right now we have two Houses of Representatives. We’re supposed to have a House and a Senate, and the Senate is supposed to be elected by the state legislators so the states would have more power….

-Marianne Moran

Readers: Thoughts? Blog me.

Gwen: I like that too.

Troy: I hear ya. Me too.

Suzanne: Problem solved. :)

Robert: A shocking observation.

Helena: Thanks. And again, another good observation in regards to your comment about the Republicans.

Bob: ahha! Cute.

Anonymous: Thank you…and …Don’t you wish. :)

Anna of Guam: Excellent. Congrats Island Girl Power! – Love the name!

Morris: So sorry.  What else can I say to a comment like that? :)

Got to run. Peace out

Tax Cuts For The Rich: Who To Blame?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 17th December 2010

Bookmark and Share

Excuse me…but how is any of this Obama’s fault?!

I don’t know if I am more angry with people who stayed home and didn’t vote (They were just plain stupid), or those who are pissed off at Obama because they claim, “He’s not doing anything about it” ? (extending the tax cuts to the rich) To me, these are truly the ignorant ones.

Now, just exactly what is Obama supposed to do? He doesn’t have a vote and he certainly is not a dictator. He is listening to the voice of the people and the people have spoken. They have chosen who they wanted to be in the driver’s seat. He is certainly not the driver.

“Oh but wait!”, you may say, “The Republicans don’t have control of the House yet.”

No they don’t, but as usual the Dems are stupid. They are giving the Republicans deference by acquiescing to their wishes, instead of sticking together and fighting in the Good ‘ol Republican way. (Will we ever learn?) You know if the tables were turned the Repubs would just pass whatever they wanted to and left it to the new House to repeal it if they could get the votes.

But what we have is the stupidity of the Democrats, not to mention a lack of support for Obama: The support that Obama has from white Dems in the house is practically nil when it comes to race politics. That’s really what it all comes down to, once again: The color of one’s skin.

Unemployment is above 9%. When this bill passes, which it looks like it will, unemployment benefits will only be extended through 2011.

“The bill would keep the programs going through 2011, meaning people laid off at the beginning of 2010 would be able to receive up to 99 weeks of benefits.”

Just what do you think will happen when this extended period is over and the Republicans have control of the House? I’ll tell you what will happen. “Hold your hand up and wave “bye bye” to any proposal to get those benefits extended even further even though unemployment will most likely remain above 9%.” There is no way reauthorization a year from now will happen in a Republican-controlled House. No way in hell.

And more than likely in the 2012 presidential election, and a Republican-controlled House, the tax cuts for the rich will be extended again, because the Republicans will see to it that they get their way.

We made our bed this past election. We have no room to complain. The people voted in the Republicans. And if they didn’t vote for the Republicans they did so by default when they were too lazy to get to the polls and support Obama.

So guess what? We got exactly what we were expecting to get. The Republicans are doing what they said they were going to do. They said they didn’t want health care, (and now a key part of the health care law has been ruled unconstitutional. You guess it. By a Federal judge who was appointed by a Republican administration) they said they didn’t want to regulate business (Did you read Ellie’s comment?) – And in regards to the topic of today, they said they would give the rich a tax break. And they are living up to their word. No surprise, yet everyone who is pissed off, is blaming Obama. How Illogical is that?

In my opinion, the American people have spoken loud and clear. They wanted those who got us in this wreck in the first place to continue driving bad. And not just bad, but drunk. Drunk on their greed. The dems didn’t vote and essentially handed back the keys to a drunk driver who is about to get out there again and run our country recklessly. And this time I’m not sure that we can prevent the damage that is about to happen.

Like I said, Obama is not a dictator. Obama is just the policeman at the light saying, “We need better drivers. I’ll give you a better street… better health insurance., etc.”  Obama is not the driver. Remember, we picked the drivers. We handed the Republicans the keys to our country.

It’s clear and simple: The Republicans stick together not matter what. If they win they take and do whatever they want – no compromise, no bipartisanship. If they lose, they do everything they can to prevent progress, and Obama becoming successful. And they scream at the dems when they feel that they aren’t willing to work together with them.

Remember back in august of 2009 when we were trying to pass health care? I  blogged about it. We only needed 50 votes + a thumbs up from VP Biden. And if the repblicans filibustered, we would need 60. But that wasn’t enough for them. Several Republicans were insisting on a bipartisan bill and saying that in order for health care to be bipartisan, the bill needed to have 75-80 senators supporting it.(!) There they go changing the rules…anything to get what they want.

But when the Republicans are getting their 50 needed votes to pass a bill, do you think they would even consider if we asked the same thing of them? Hell no.

Their moto is “It’s my way or no way”. And if they have to lie, steal, and cheat their way back into the White House they will do and say whatever they need to, in order to get back their power. And once they are there, no other agenda matters but their own. Once again, (Thanks for the reminder Peter), “justice” means “Just us”.

We lost 63 seats in the House last November!

“Republicans made a net gain of 63 seats from Democrats and retook control of the chamber, which they lost in the 2006 midterm elections. With this election, the Republicans wiped out the gains the Democrats made in 2006 and 2008 and picked up additional seats, making it the highest of any House victory for a single party since 1948, and the highest of any midterm election since 1938.”

And it’s Obama’s fault that the rich are getting a tax break?! Give me a break. It’s easy to take the easy route and blame Obama. The more difficult route is explaining to the Democratic voters how they screwed up and “why” this is happening.

This is a letter that I received in my e-mail, that I thought I would pass along. I apologize that I presently don’t have the name of the author.

Begin forwarded message:
>> Sent: Fri, Nov 5, 2010 8:50 pm
>> Subject: Stop judging the willing slaves…

>> Well, well, well. I am still hearing folk whining about the dems not staying in touch with their ‘base’ and so the ‘base’ didn’t bother to go to the polls to vote them back into office. And, yes, these election results were considered a referendum on the Obama administration.
>>
>> The saddest part of all of this is that I am reminded of the Emancipation of Slaves. All the slaves did not wish to be freed. They preferred the security of the status quo over the uncertainties that a future of freedom and self-determination held for them. And so, some chose to ‘wait out’ the opportunity to exercise their freedom option—wait until the future came into clearer and even more positive focus. For the African-Americans who chose not to vote in the 2010 mid-term election or who decided to vote for Republicans out of spite, I say you need not ever criticize the slaves who considered certainty of a sad status over the uncertainty of a better life—in the future. These folk also remind me of children who must have immediate gratification to quiet the threat of tantrums, because they don’t understand the concept of ‘soon’ or ‘later’.
>>
>> I had a stressful job in my career that required every ‘spare’ moment of my time. While trying to build something that was worthwhile, I was confronted with obstacles that were erected by folk who had no vision and therefore no patience nor penchant for working harder—folk who felt advantaged by having to perform at minimum standards or less without challenge. Any minutes that I could eke out of my day was applied to trying to keep me healthy in mind, body and soul. Stress is a bear.
>>
>> I mention this because my little part of the world was like a microscopic organism compared to what Obama has had to deal with since he took office. Sure, not all of the Democrats deserved to be returned to office. But for those who were to be ousted, there were others worthy of winning fresh terms over incumbent Republicans. How does President Obama feel to know he has to spend precious time ‘courting’ us continually lest we have a temper tantrum, suck our thumb and sulk? For women, particularly, who wait for husbands or boyfriends who are away fighting our wars, they know that they won’t hear from their loved ones often. But they do what they can on the homefront to support their common goals and families until their loved ones execute the assigned duties and hopefully return to them whole. Why can’t we do this for Obama. He has done us proud by going into all of his battles prepared. Now how hard is that! He has to know about everything in detail. So just how much tv do you think he gets to enjoy? He plays basketball for his health and wellbeing. Are we begrudging him that too? Oh, yes, so many blacks in the media or in positions of authority wanted him to continually thank them for ‘getting out the black vote’. Give me a break. We got on board his campaign late and now we consider ourselves his first on board. Who’s zoomin’ whom?
>>
>> So to all my e-buds who worked hard to turn out the vote for the most qualified and Obama-minded candidates, keep the faith. Good will prevail. The Republican dominated House is now in a position where they will have to be a bit more creative in their ability to play the shell game. However, I must admit that so much of the American public is functionally ignorant that the Republicans would consider themselves remiss not to continue to take advantage of their inability to receive, process and evaluate information.
>>
>> At any rate, the following e-mail that I received documents achievements of the Obama administration. Please make sure that any of those thumb-sucking, tantrum throwing eligible voters you know who chose not to vote gets the list. And I don’t think that the very solicitous President Obama would object to you rocking them back to sleep after they ‘wake up’ to read the list. Oh, and do help them put that thumb back in their mouth. Suckers.

Readers: It’s Friday…start flapping your lips. Blog me.

Bob: Lol with that one!

Bai: As much as I hear what you are saying, I don’t buy the excuse. That is the problem that is happening all over the world. People don’t care about each other. They care only about money. China doesn’t care about killing us with poison infused products, and the U.S. doesn’t care enough about the plight of women to refuse to purchase oil in those countries who abuse women.

If we all cared about each other half as much as we do our money, we would refuse to do business with each other in manners that harm the people, the animals, and the planet. And the result of that would be great changes for the betterment and well being of all.

Someone, somewhere needs to take a stance and be an example. Who will it be? What country will it be? I was HOPEful that with Obama in office, we would be that country. I still have great faith in Obama, but it is clear, he doesn’t have the support he needs to be as great as his potential.

I would love to say more but time has run out.

Peace out.

Crying, Compromise, and Tax Cuts

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 13th December 2010

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

Ha! I love it when Anonz chimes in. My number of comments always go up, and the focus isn’t on me or what I’ve blogged. Makes my following morning write so much easier when most of the comments are directed toward… “The Nobleman”. :)

So speaking of my morning write – what is going on? So much to chitchat about.

We watched 60 minutes last night – did any of you watch it? Did you catch cry-baby Boehner? Is that too harsh on a man who is just showing us his soft side? Maybe I should lighten up and address him as Boo-Hoo Boehner. Stil harsh?

Look, I don’t knock a man who cries – I think everybody should be able to have a good cry now and then. I think crying is good. (I certainly do. More often than I like – hey, it’s a great stress reliever.:)

But it seems lately that every time John Boehner appears on TV, in public, he gets chocked up and tears start streaming. I know he is an emotional guy…

And I also know, that if a woman politician showed her soft side so often, chocking up, tears streaming down her face, she would be known throughout the political world as being too soft…too emotional, she won’t be able to handle the job. (And we’ve also heard negative comments when a woman is too strong. Ugh!) But what about Boehner? How will he be perceived? Well…I guess his tears, in time, will eventually tell.

Thoughts? Are you moved by his emotions? Do you buy it or ??

And what about Boehner’s thoughts on “Compromise”? Not a word in his vocabulary. He rejects the word.

Boehner: When you say the word “compromise,” a lot of Americans look up and go, “Uh-oh, they’re gonna sell me out.” And so finding common ground, I think, makes more sense.

Uh..Okay.

What are your thoughts about the Bush tax cuts?

Will the tax cuts plan pass? That is the big question for today.

First Senate vote expected on Obama-GOP tax deal

WASHINGTON – Senators get their first chance Monday to vote on the tax-cut deal struck by President Barack Obama and Republicans, but whatever the outcome of the test vote, the White House expects the bill to pass by year’s end.

“Everybody understands what it would mean for the economy if we don’t get this done,” Obama adviser David Axelrod said Sunday.

The No. 2 Senate Democrat, Dick Durbin of Illinois, said a “good cross-section” of senators in his party are ready to accept the deal.

The legislation would avert a Jan. 1 increase in income taxes for nearly all Americans, including middle and high earners. The package also would renew a program of jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed and put in place a one-year cut in Social Security taxes.

“We believe that when it comes back to the House, that we will get a vote, and that we’ll prevail there, because at the end of the day, no one wants to see taxes go up on 150 million Americans” on New Year’s Day, Axelrod said. “No one wants to see 2 million people lose their unemployment insurance.”

While many House Democrats have criticized the tax deal, Axelrod said he didn’t foresee “major changes” being made by the House.

Maryland Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a member of the Democratic leadership who represented the House in negotiations with the administration, made clear that Democrats strongly object to extending breaks to estates as large as $5 million. He said the package will be taken up in the House in some form, but there would be an effort to change the estate tax provision.

“We’re not talking about blocking the whole thing,” Van Hollen said.

At the insistence of Republicans, the plan includes a more generous estate tax provision: The first $5 million of a couple’s estate could pass to heirs without taxation, and an additional $5 million for the spouse. The balance would be subject to a 35 percent tax rate.

That provision infuriated Democrats who are already unhappy with Obama for agreeing to extend tax cuts at incomes of more than $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples, and who say the tax breaks will unnecessarily add to the rising federal deficit. In all, the package would cost about $855 billion, according to a preliminary congressional estimate.

Axelrod spoke on ABC’s “This Week,” CBS’ “Face the Nation” and CNN’s “State of the Union.” Van Hollen appeared on “Fox News Sunday” and Durbin was on CNN.

And I appreciate those that do and enjoy it, because there is a need for that kind of work. But there is never a need to apologize for ranting here. Rant on as you feel the need. :)

Bush Tax Cuts And The Middle Class: Middle Class? What Middle Class?

The latest update from this past Saturday on the Bush tax cuts:

Senate Republicans Block Middle Class Tax Cut

Senate Republicans today successfully filibustered two Democratic tax cut bills that would have allowed Bush-era tax cuts benefiting only the wealthiest sliver of the country to expire. The party-line votes were intended by Democratic leaders to put Republicans on the record blocking the extension of tax cuts that would have benefitedall Americans in order to secure additional tax cuts for the highest-income earners in America.

Today’s result was never in doubt. At a press conference yesterday, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who masterminded the votes, characterized today’s exercise as part of a long-running argument between Democrats and Republicans — one that voters will judge on election day in 2012. “This is going to be a winning argument not just for the next one to two weeks, but for the next two years,” he said.

The two bills that failed were similar, but served very different purposes. The first, to preserve the Bush-era tax cuts for income up to $250,000, was passed by the House earlier this week, and would have represented a fulfillment of President Obama’s campaign pledge to allow taxes to increase for income above that level. The second would have raised that threshold to $1,000,000. Its purpose was meant to emphasize the lengths Republicans will go to to protect the interests of millionaires.

Sens. Jim Webb (D-VA), Ben Nelson (D-NE), Joe Manchin (D-WV), Russ Feingold (D-WI), and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) voted with the Republicans on the former plan. The vote was 53-36. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Tom Harkin (D-IA) Lieberman and Feingold voted with the GOP on the second. That vote was 53-37, and reflected progressives’ unease with redefining the middle class at the $1,000,000 income threshold.

In recent days, the White House has publicly and privately pushed back on Schumer’s plan as they negotiated a compromise with the GOP. The details of that compromise haven’t been finalized. But the White House is thought have offered to allow all the Bush tax cuts to be extended temporarily, if Republicans will agree to a year-long extension of unemployment benefits and to tax breaks in the stimulus bill, to provide much-needed juice to the economy.

Republicans have threatened to block all Democratic legislation until the tax cut issue is resolved, pressing them to cave before time runs out on other key initiatives like the ratification of the START treaty and the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

And if you aren’t already fired up about the talk surrounding the Bush tax cuts, watch the passion of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I- Vermont):

Readers: If the Republicans don’t go for extending the Bush tax cuts according to what the Dems have been planning for years, (The Bush tax cuts will be extended for the first quarter million dollars of income – Above that? No. ) I for one say “screw ‘em – let them expire for everyone”, and blame the Repubs for raising taxes on the entire country.  Let’s see how people respond to that one if and when it happens. Unless of course, the Dems gather up their balls and do something.

If you have something to say, say it here. Blog me.

Vivian: Congratulations! I wonder how many of my readers are now in relationship with a fellow reader. Too cool. Thanks for sharing your story.

Doug: Heaven is right here waiting for you. :) Looking forward to you coming home today.

Shaun: Hmm…(Sigh) Kinda sucks sometimes doesn’t it? I have reached acceptance on so many levels these past few days. I posted this quote on my computer screen; a quote that is very familiar to many. It has become the thing that I read whenever I am faced with something challenging.

“GOD, GRANT ME THE SERENITY TO ACCEPT THE THINGS I CANNOT CHANGE, COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS I CAN, AND WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.”

Bob: I like it. :)

Henry: Well said. My eyes are looking at the same thing.  Many people are choosing not to see the truth.

Hi Anna:…long time! How are you? Nice to see you here. Hmmm…Could there be new possible relationships brewing in the near future?  Bai and his friends perhaps? Oops I meant Bai and “her” friends. :) Hafa Adai.

Hi Peter! Hafa Adai.
