The Rand Paul Stomp

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 29th October 2010

A young woman from MoveOn had her head stomped on at a campaign event in Kentucky a few days ago by a Rand Paul supporter. I am sure that you have seen it as it has been all over the news. The Democrats rallied and using the footage, they put together a very powerful ad against Rand Paul. It is not only powerful, but very disturbing.

What kind of man would throw a young woman down to the ground? A Republican. What kind of man would thrust his foot in between her legs, pressing her down with all his weight, and pinning her to the curb? A Republican. What kind of man would viciously stomp on a young woman’s head with his boot, as she lay there helpless? A Republican. And what kind of men would stand there and do nothing about it? Republican men.

Would any woman in her right mind want to support a party that subjects women to such abuse?

Lauren Valle, the young woman, is now suffering a concussion. This is so disturbing to me. Is anyone else feeling sickened by this?

I don’t know about you but I have been feeling a little nervous these past few days. And a little scared. Nervous because the Republicans are too close for comfort in quite a few states. And scared because…well because there are so many radical, scary, extreme Republicans running for office.

I am realizing just how important this election is, because we just can’t let these extremists run our country. It just can’t happen. I go to my mail box and all I find are flyers promoting the midterms.  So many. I don’t remember having this much stuff mailed to me before. And my inbox is the same. It feels a little desperate. And how can it not be? – we are in desperate times. This is probably one of the most important midterms we have ever come upon. Is anyone else feeling this way?

I watched Michael Moore on the Rachel Maddow show last night. And he reiterated just how badly we all need to show up at the polls and vote Democratic. Call your friends. Call your family. Make sure they vote on Tuesday. He expressed his HOPE that those who voted Democratic in 2008, and are thinking of voting Republican this time around,  will step into the booth and realize that it has only been 2 years since Obama has been our president…and that they will remember the last 8 years, cringe at the thought of a Republican majority, and vote Democratic again. I have the same HOPE. Is anyone else feeling this way?

Five days left.

Zen Lill: Girl…you have been quite challenged these past few weeks. Happy to hear that you are handling it. I am out of here early again, not too early, but I won’t have time to e-you. I’ll try calling you when I am back in my office. Good luck with the burial. :)

AH: So good to hear from you. Thanks for your explanation on anomalies. The effects and repercussions of anomalies are quite interesting to me, for reasons that you mentioned. And thanks too for explaining the process of time travel. Surprisingly, I totally get it. I would love to say more, but honestly I did not expect to see any comments this morning so I indulged in my beauty sleep. Hence, I need to sign off. Progress For America’s Women

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 28th October 2010

Bookmark and Share

If you’re a woman, I hope that you’re voting with the Democrats this November. Why? Because women will suffer if the balance of power shifts.

A report released last Thursday by the White House makes an excellent case that women have benefited greatly from the policies and programs advanced by the Obama administration and the Democratic Congress. Also see Speaker Pelosi’s report released Friday, highlighting the top 5 gains for women in the 111th Congress and how few Republicans voted for each. By inference, women will suffer if the November elections shift the balance of power between the parties. Unfortunately, many women, leaders included, probably do not know just how much women have benefited from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, otherwise known as the economic stimulus, the Affordable Care Act (health care reform), and other policy changes in the past 22 months.

-Heidi Hartman, President, Institute for Women’s Policy Research, Huff Po

Have any doubt? This is Pelosi’s report:

Progress For America’s Women

10/22/2010

The Democratic-led 111th Congress has been enacting key measures to improve the lives of America’s women and their families; in sharp contrast, Republicans are out-of-touch with women’s concerns and have consistently opposed these gains.

America is moving forward, and Democrats will continue to focus on creating good jobs for women, expanding opportunities for women-owned small businesses, better supporting working women at home and in their jobs, protecting Medicare from Republican voucher schemes, and preserving Social Security from Republican plans to privatize and cut it.  Protecting Social Security is key for women; 58% of Social Security recipients are women and for a majority of women over 65, Social Security provides more than half of their income.

TOP 5 ACTIONS IN THE 111TH CONGRESS

EQUAL PAY FOR WOMEN

One of the very top issues for American women is equal pay for equal work.  The first substantive bill enacted into law in the 111th Congress was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.  It restored the right of women and other workers to challenge unfair pay—by reversing the May 2007 Ledbetter v Goodyear Supreme Court decision that overturned precedent and made it much more difficult for workers to pursue pay discrimination claims.  The bill restored prior law—allowing a complaint to be filed within 180 days of a discriminatory paycheck, not of an employer’s first decision to discriminate.  The bill was supported by many groups, including AAUW, Business and Professional Women, and the Women’s Chamber of Commerce.  98% of House Republicans voted NO, including the House GOP Leadership.

CREATING AND SAVING GOOD JOBS FOR WOMEN

As with all Americans, American women want a fair shot at getting and keeping a good job—during a struggling economy caused by the Bush recession. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the Recovery Act has been responsible for up to 3.3 million jobs nationwide through June 2010.  The Recovery Act included numerous provisions to expand job opportunities and job training for women, including in non-traditional careers like hundreds of thousands of new clean energy jobs and skills training and expanded opportunities for women in the transportation industry. An independent report by two prominent economists, including an advisor to the McCain for President campaign, concluded that the Recovery Act and certain actions by the Federal Reserve helped prevent a second Great Depression—and that, without them, we would have lost an additional 8 million jobs and unemployment today would be over 16%.  That would have been a disaster for American women and their families.  100% of House Republicans voted NO, including the House GOP Leadership.

Millions of American women own a small business—and have had trouble getting critical access to credit in the Bush recession.  The Small Business Jobs Act unlocked up to $300 billion in private sector lending to them and included 8 new small business tax cuts, worth $12 billion. 99% of House Republicans voted NO, including the House GOP Leadership.

PROTECTING CHILDREN & TEENS FROM TOBACCO AND UNSAFE FOOD

Protecting our children from health dangers is a primary responsibility of government—and this Congress has made great strides to protect children from the dangers of smoking and from the nightmare of contaminated food.

Every day, more than 3,500 children try a cigarette for the first time, and another 1,000 will become new, regular daily smokers.  One-third of these youth will eventually die prematurely as a result.  The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, enacted in 2009, grants the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate the advertising, marketing, and manufacturing of tobacco products, including banning all outdoor tobacco advertising within 1,000 feet of schools and playgrounds; restricting vending machines and self-service displays to adult-only facilities; requiring retailers to verify age for all over-the-counter sales; and providing for federal enforcement and penalties against retailers who sell to minors. 56% of House Republicans voted NO, including the House GOP Leadership.

Each year, more than 325,000 Americans are hospitalized and 5,000 die from consuming contaminated food.  In just the last few years, there has been a string of food-borne illness outbreaks in foods consumed by millions of Americans each day—from spinach to peppers to peanut butter.  The House passed a landmark food safety bill, the Food Safety Enhancement Act, that makes several long-overdue repairs to our broken food safety system—giving the FDA new powers and tools to ensure our food is safe.  It requires more frequent inspections of food processing facilities; gives FDA the authority to order a food recall if a company fails to do so when requested; and takes steps to ensure that imported foods meet safety standards.  69% of House Republicans voted NO on this bill, including the House GOP Leadership—and the bill has been held up in the Senate by threats of Republican obstruction.

BEING A WOMAN WILL NO LONGER BE A “PRE-EXISTING CONDITION”

Under the abusive practices of many health insurers, being a woman has essentially been treated as a pre-existing condition.  In the individual insurance market, where millions of woman purchase coverage every year, women have suffered enormous discrimination for decades—many health insurers have treated pregnancy, having had a C-section, and even being the victim of domestic violence as a pre-existing condition.  These health insurers have also used “gender rating”—charging women more than men for the same coverage.  The Affordable Care Act requires health insurance companies to stop discriminating against women when reforms are fully implemented in 2014—eliminating pre-existing conditions and stopping insurers from being able to charge women more than men for the same coverage.  100% of House Republicans voted NO on this bill, including the House GOP Leadership.  House Republican Leader Boehner has continually vowed that the number-one priority of a Republican Majority would be to repeal the health reform bill.

BANNING DISCRIMINATION AGAINST SICK CHILDREN & ENSURING COVERAGE FOR AT LEAST 11 MILLION CHILDREN

All American children deserve to have a healthy start in life. One of the cruelest practices of America’s health insurance industry has been denying children with pre-existing conditions coverage—or dropping them from coverage when they get sick.  TheAffordable Care Act ended those practices for new plan years starting in September under the new Patient’s Bill of Rights.  It also gives comfort to parents of adult children under the age of 26—who can finally stay on their parents’ insurance policy if they need it.  100% of House Republicans voted NO—and they threaten to repeal these historic gains.

The second substantive bill enacted into law in the 111th Congress provided health care coverage for 11 million children. The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Reauthorization Act preserved coverage for 7 million children covered by CHIP and extended coverage to 4 million uninsured children who are eligible for, but not yet enrolled in, CHIP and Medicaid.  The bill was fully paid for by increasing the tobacco tax.  77% of House Republicans voted NO, including the House GOP Leadership—opposing legislation which simply strengthened the popular, bipartisan Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

**********

Girls: Just when Congress has been enacting key measures to improve our lives and the lives of our families, we many lose our momentum this November. You can see how the Republicans are voting. They certainly aren’t on our side when it comes to our health, our livelihood, our concerns. We can keep the momentum going if we get out and vote Democratic, and encourage our girlfriends to stick together and do the same.

Don’t you think we have had enough? Aren’t you tired of being considered a second class citizen? When will women get a clue? Men just don’t care enough about us as they do each other. It’s really that simple, and it’s really the truth. At least with the Democrats we have a chance…a voice. With the Republicans, “the party of no“, we girls stand little chance of being heard.

So…stop standing behind your man, and stand beside your sisters. You girls know who I am talking to.

I long for the day when women support women, the way men have always supported men. I’m envious of the camaraderie that men have amongst each other. If there is one thing that we can learn from men, it is how loyal they are to each other. And they have shown us that they can be ruthlessly loyal when it comes to putting others aside, and sticking by each other’s side.

I’m not asking to be ruthless, although maybe we should. I’m only asking for simple loyalty, simple support amongst us girls. How about making that day this November 2nd…and beyond? We have the numbers – Stick with the Dems. Let’s do it.

Zen Lill: This afternoon should be good. Call me in my office when you have the time.

Peace & Love: “Live it, Give it”

The Life Of Madeleine

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 26th October 2010

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

And I’m not talking about Earthling girl Madaline.

This is for my friends in Guam. It might be yesterday’s news to you, but it is just came across my plate a few days ago.

The life of Madeleine: Book retells story of iconic local figure

First ladies: Guam Delegate Madeleine Bordallo (right) takes a moment to take a photo with First Lady Joann Camacho at a Sept. 26 book signing for Bordallo’s new book.

Since moving to Guam as a teenager in the 1940s, Madeleine Z. Bordallo has always caught people’s gazes. At first it was for her looks and keen fashion sense, and in later years it was for her accomplishments as an island leader.

The life and times of Guam’s Congressional delegate are celebrated in the newly published book, “Madeleine: A Tribute in Photographs.”

Nostalgic photos of Bordallo as a smiling baby, black-and-white pictures where she resembles a beautiful Hollywood starlet, and pictures of the many people she has met and accomplishments she has achieved fill the 180-page coffee table book.

Bordallo has worked hard and earned the love and respect of the people of Guam, all while managing to be the picture of perfection. Not a single hair is out of place in any of the photos in her book, which contains more than 250 pictures of Bordallo alongside some of the greatest influences in her life.

The book is a “candid portrayal of Madeleine’s life including her family, friends and the activities in which she participated,” Joaquin Perez, her senior policy adviser, wrote in the book’s forward. Bordallo is currently running unopposed for another term as Guam’s Congressional delegate.

The book, published by Bordallo’s niece Kathleen Phillips Aguon, is dedicated to the people of Guam. Photos chronicle Bordallo growing up on the island, and holding government positions of senator, first lady, lieutenant governor and Guam delegate to the United States Congress. The book shows a living history of the island through Bordallo’s life, and how she has served the people of Guam the last 30 years.

Bordallo and Aguon sat down with Pacific Sunday News at a book signing on Sept. 26, to discuss the book and what it means to them.

“I wanted it to be biographical and meaningful, and would speak volumes, as they say,” says Aguon. Aguon spent months in her aunt’s office, going through thousands of photos, scanning them for the book.

Instead of using words to tell Bordallo’s story, Aguon preferred the use of photos because a picture brings back personal memories, but it doesn’t reveal the memories of other people at the same moment, she says. Everyone can look at the photo and reminisce.

“A picture is worth a thousand words. That’s where I was going with it, really,” says Aguon.

“Photos capture the time and moment without spoiling it with someone’s recollection.”

Picture Perfect

Page after page of the book, Bordallo is glamorous and graceful in every photo. Her hair is perfectly styled and her outfits rival those of top fashionistas.

“Well in my line of duty, I feel that it’s important … when you travel — you’re a member of Congress and you meet a lot of people — that you look presentable,” Bordallo says.

“And I’ve always been very interested in fashion. I like to dress up and look good.”

Bordallo’s mother also owned dress shops when she was younger, and she says that is where her fashion influence came from. She also did a bit of modeling in her younger days.

“Way back, many years ago,” Bordallo says.

This interest in fashion and beauty also led to her forming the Miss Guam World Pageant, which continues today.

“I do get casual once in a while with jeans and sweatshirts,” Bordallo says, but when asked what her secret to perfection was, she simply mentioned she loved perfume and used Lancôme products on her face.

The secret to her beehive is staying with her, though.

“I thought, did I really look like that? Did I really do those beehive hairdos and all the others?” she says with a laugh. “I’ve come a long way and I guess I look a little better now than I did back then.”

On That Road

“I always tell people, if you do have your mind set on certain careers, as you go, your path may change,” says Bordallo.

“Depending on who you love, who you marry, the circumstances that surround you may get you into something that you never dreamed, so take whatever course come your way and go for it.”

Bordallo’s path has taken her all over the world, but this was a path she never saw coming. Things changed when she got married.

“I married a politician,” she says.

Bordallo had her hopes set on a career in music. She went to college to study voice. But after she met her late husband, the late Gov. Ricky Bordallo, and said her vows, “I went from music to politics to Guam.”

“I would say today, this is my passion, … being able to work for the people of Guam to give them a better life,” Bordallo says.

“The challenges in Washington are great for me right now, and I continue to try to help the people in any way I can.”

Making The Book

When Aguon first tried to talk to Bordallo about doing a book about her, Bordallo says she tried to discourage her.

“I thought that she would have to interview me about my life, and I wasn’t really prepared for that,” she says.

But Aguon was rather insistent, and when she explained it would be a book of photographs, Bordallo agreed.

“I’ve grown up with her, … and I saw her every day, just impeccable, gorgeous, glamorous. Every little girl wants to be like auntie Madeleine,” says Aguon.

“She reminds me of Princess Diana and Hollywood celebrities, an iconic figure that’s a hard worker and still like everybody else. So why shouldn’t there be a book about her?”

A Local Heart

One of the best things about her aunt is, “People can relate to her as a local,” Aguon says.

Guam is Bordallo’s home, and she says one of her favorite things about the book is that it shows how many years she’s been on Guam.

“I moved here when I was about 14 years old, and lived here ever since. Some of the younger people don’t realize that I grew up here, Bordallo says.

“This way they can see, these pictures take us back. … I’m very proud to be a part of Guam.”

One adoring supporter of Bordallo bought her book, asked Delegate Bordallo to sign it, then had the book resealed in order to preserve it.

First lady Joann Camacho, who attended the book signing on Sept. 26, says she really looks up to Bordallo.

“She does her all for the people of Guam,” Camacho says. “She’s local in her heart and she loves her island. She’s also a mentor to myself since she has been a first lady. She is one woman who is very elegant with class. Someone that we should all be proud of, and who we’re very blessed with.”

Readers: I didn’t address Bordallo in my Wonderful Women Of The World series, but she certainly deserves the title.  Comments? Thoughts? Blog me.

Get In The Game

Morning. Is it good? You tell me.

Readers: Volunteer to get out the vote. And if you have more money than you do time….pledge a few bucks and help your candidates get out their message. Here’s the latest from OFA:

Michelle –

Republican Senate candidates Linda McMahon in Connecticut, Rand Paul in Kentucky, John Raese in West Virginia, and Dino Rossi in Washington have all pledged to roll back or eliminate the minimum wage.

Sharron Angle in Nevada, Ken Buck in Colorado, and Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania have all talked about privatizing Social Security — or eliminating it altogether.

Twenty of this year’s Republican candidates for the Senate have been asked about climate change, and 19 of them have said that the science is wrong.

But taking stances this extreme has consequences. Pat Toomey is slipping in Pennsylvania. In Wisconsin, Ron Johnson is losing ground. Raese, Paul, and Buck are running out of steam.

OFA supporters are out there every day, making record numbers of phone calls and contacts at the doors. And these conversations are changing elections. You are making the choice to voters absolutely clear: whether to continue to move America forward, or to go back to the failed policies of the past.

This election is an uphill battle — it’s a tough environment and special interests are spending tens of millions of dollars attacking Democrats.

But the more people find out about this crop of Republicans, the better our candidates do. The call scripts and ads are all ready to go to continue spreading the word. We just need your help to amplify the message. And we have nine days to do it.

Will you chip in $10 or more to help tell as many voters as possible about the choice in the final days?

Thanks,

Mitch

Calling All Women….”We Need YOUR Support!” (no.2)

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 22nd October 2010

Good morning!

I call this title “no.2″ because I used this same title in my write almost two and a half years ago when I needed women to stand up and support women. This was when Madaline first began giving her rants on the stupidity of white women. So…just for fun this morning, I reread my rant to Madaline, and wow, it almost gets me all riled up again.

Anyway, well this time girls I am asking for your support again. Not necessarily just in support of  women, although there are definitely some Democratic women candidates to support, and I hope that you will. But in order to support our Democratic candidates, women and men, you must do one simple thing if nothing else, you must vote.

So…I am asking for your support by taking your little booty (or big booty, if you will:) down to the polls this November 2nd and vote. Now how difficult is that? And I don’t want to hear about voter suppression. It is time to woman up. You have the right to vote – do it. Follow Lorri’s lead and go to the polls and vote Democratic. Thanks Lorri!

Let’s not be stupid. And I’m not speaking to just white women, but  ALL women, especially Democrat women as we have been informed by Jerome, that the Republicans are really working on the white woman vote in Washington. Meaning the Republicans are counting on their typical brainwashing when it comes to their women standing by their side. Oh, I can just hear them now. By the way I could care less if you are a Republican sitting this one out, and in fact I encourage it: Stay home. Do it.

So getting back to women and voting…I heard on the news last night and I also read on the Huff Po, that women voters, whose usually reliable support appears to have softened. Wha’at?? Women are 51% of the voting population and we’re going soft?! What is going on? C’mon Democrat girls –  You have a date on November 2nd, and a no-show is not acceptable.

Dems Get In Touch With Their Feminine Side

Seattle – In a last-ditch effort to prevent electoral disaster, President Barack Obama and Democratic allies are vigorously wooing women voters, whose usually reliable support appears to have softened.

From blunt TV ads to friendlier backyard chats, they’re straining to persuade women that it’s the Democrats who are on their side and it’s in women’s vital interest to turn out and vote in the Nov. 2 elections that could give Republicans control of one or both houses of Congress.

In Seattle on Thursday, Obama told local women and others that “how well women do will help determine how well our families are doing as a whole.” Accompanied by women who own businesses, he spoke in a family’s backyard about the economy’s effects on women and outlined ways he said his policies have helped them.

Later, trying to rekindle the enthusiasm of his presidential race, he all but ordered thousands of cheering supporters at a packed University of Washington arena to get out and vote, even though he’s not on the ballot. Hoarsely shouting over the applause, he said, “If everybody that voted in 2008 shows up in 2010, we will win this election. We will win this election. But you’ve got to come out and vote.”

Campaigning for one of the Democrats’ female senators, Patty Murray, who is in a tight re-election fight, Obama attracted a bigger crowd than the 10,000 who could fit into the arena. The others moved to an overflow area set up in the university’s football stadium, and the president ran through the stadium tunnel onto the field to greet them.

With the elections less than two weeks away and Democrats fearing big losses, candidates, party allies and others are joining Obama in seeking women’s votes by hitting Republican opponents – in ads, mailings and speeches – on issues such as abortion rights. In every corner of the country, they are arguing that the GOP would erase progress American women have made under Democratic control of the White House and Congress.

The latest Associated Press-GfK poll underscores the Democrats’ concern: Women long have leaned toward Democrats but, at a time of great economic unrest, those who are likely to vote now split fairly evenly between the two parties, 49 percent favoring Democrats, 45 percent Republicans. That’s a significant drop from 2006 when Democrats had a double-digit edge. The current margin mirrors 1994, the year of a Republican wave that swept Congress.

Men usually break for Republicans, and they broadly favor the GOP this year, too.

Women could hold the key for Obama and his party as Democrats look to minimize expected widespread losses at all levels of government in a year when, particularly on the Republican side, female candidates top ballots in statewide races in Connecticut, South Carolina, California, New Hampshire, New Mexico and elsewhere.

Hope for the Democrats: A lot of women are undecided, and more than a third who are likely to vote say they could still change their minds before the election.

With that in mind, the White House, Democratic candidates and outside groups are reaching out to female voters.

Making it personal, Obama told the backyard group on Thursday he’s determined to make sure that girls get as good an education as boys, particularly in math and science.

“As a father of two daughters, this is something that I spend a lot of time thinking about,” he said.

He presented two women – Christina Lomasney, a physicist and president of a local metals company, and Jody Hall, who has five cupcake shops in the Seattle area – who praised the government for business help.

Besides the president, first lady Michelle Obama has campaigned on Democrats’ behalf with a particular focus on women. She recently pleaded for their votes during a New York fundraiser that partly benefited the Women’s Leadership Forum. She was flanked by Vice President Joe Biden’s wife, Jill, and actress Sarah Jessica Parker of “Sex and the City.”

Mrs. Obama reminded the crowd that her husband had named two women to the Supreme Court and that the first piece of legislation he signed as president was the Lilly Ledbetter Act to help women achieve equal pay.

Across the country, Democratic candidates and their allies are reaching out to women, mostly by casting their Republican opponents – some of them women as well – as out-of-step with their concerns.

The head of EMILY’s List, Stephanie Schriock, recently warned voters in a speech that a Republican takeover of Congress – and Republican John Boehner as House speaker – would mean “a dangerous world.” The organization, dedicated to electing women who favor abortion rights, had hundreds of female volunteers calling women in California urging them to vote for Sen. Barbara Boxer.

In Nevada, a new ad by the Service Employees International Union assails Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid’s GOP challenger, saying Sharron Angle would force a rape victim who was impregnated to have the baby, and her ideas would hurt women’s ability to get college loans, find jobs and have Social Security.

Elsewhere, Democrats have hammered Republican Ken Buck in Colorado’s Senate race over claims of a woman who says Buck once refused to prosecute a case in which she said she had been raped. In Kentucky’s Senate race, Democrat Jack Conway, trailing his GOP opponent in the polls, has an ad running that asks: “Why did Rand Paul once tie a woman up?” – a reference to an allegation of a college prank. And Washington Sen. Murray is assailing Republican Dino Rossi with an ad that accuses him of wanting to “turn back the clock” on abortion rights.

On Election Day a week from Tuesday, women could make the difference in a couple of dozen extraordinarily close congressional races scattered across the nation, and in a half dozen neck-and-neck Senate contests that could determine whether Republicans rise to power, among them Washington state, Nevada, Colorado, Illinois, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Women also could affect governors’ races from coast to coast, including the biggest prizes of the year in Ohio, California and Florida.

Top Democrats publicly shrug off the notion that women are fleeing the party, but the intense focus by the White House and candidates on this generally reliable constituency shows a concern.

“One of the issues that separates us from the Republican Party is our advocacy on these issues,” said White House senior adviser David Axelrod. “There is a very strong case to be made for the advocacy that we’ve shown and for our belief that getting fair treatment for women, whether it’s in the workplace, in the health care system, in obtaining capital in order to start or expand businesses.”

To promote that position, Obama’s National Economic Council released a report on “Jobs and Economic Security for America’s Women” – detailing small-business loans, child care tax credits and other programs aimed at women – and top aide Valerie Jarrett made the rounds on morning talk shows to promote his policies.

“Strengthening opportunities for women in our economy is a key focus of the presidents economic agenda,” Jarrett wrote the White House blog.

For Democrats, the challenge over the next days is great.

Women are less tuned into the election than men, with just 54 percent of women who are likely to vote saying they have a great deal of interest compared with 67 percent of men, according to the AP-GfK poll.

Still, nearly half of women say they want to see Democrats retain control of Congress, compared with 41 percent who would prefer the GOP. Men are the reverse.

Women likely to vote also are more apt than men to say they trust Democrats more than Republicans – or they trust the two parties the same – on most issues tested, including creating jobs.

And 54 percent of women likely to vote say they’d like to see their own House member re-elected. It’s a good sign for Democrats in a Congress where they outnumber Republicans.
