The 39 Democrats That Voted ‘Nay’ On The Health Care Bill, The 64 That Voted ‘Aye’ On The Stupak Amendment

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 9th November 2009

Libby:  You asked. And to make it clear for everyone to see, here are the 39 Democrats that voted against the health care bill.

Readers: I suggest that you copy and paste and keep it on your desk top for future reference.

Travis Childers(MISS. 1)

Larry Kissell(N.C. 8)

Jason Altmire(PA. 4)

Harry Teague(N.M. 2)

Betsy Markey(COLO. 4)

Suzanne Kosmas(FLA. 24)

Dennis J. Kucinich(OHIO 10)

Michael E. McMahon(N.Y. 13)

Mike Ross(ARK. 4)

Rick Boucher(VA. 9)

Artur Davis(ALA. 7)

Charlie Melancon(LA. 3)

John Tanner(TENN. 8)

If you want to see the full chart click here.

I supported Kucinich and his HR676 plan. I appreciated his unwavering commitment towards the single payer, as much as I knew it was a long shot. Hell, health care reform in itself was at one point a long shot, but we stuck in there and did what we needed to do to get it passed. And as I mentioned yesterday, at the expense of women’s health which I am not happy about at all.

But to not have health care reform when so many have died, and are dying because of the lack of insurance is a reason in itself to vote for reform.  We have to start somewhere and I am hoping that all of us will continue to fight for women’s health to be made a priority in our health care system.

And…since I’m posting those that opposed the health bill, I thought I would post those that voted ‘aye’ on the Stupak amendment that I wrote about yesterday. I suggest you copy and paste to your desk top too – we need to keep our eyes on this bunch too.

And as Libby suggested, “…learn their names and vote them out in the primaries and select democrats that will support Obama.”….And in my own words, “….select democrats that support women too.”

Larry: I thought it was a hoot too. :)

Lora:  I had read about animals and the H1N1 too and was concerned over Lucy our beloved dog getting it. Thanks for the post. Hafa Adai.

Robert: Is this from our used-to-be-a-regular Robert or ? Anyway….Great post about viagra and the side effects. Once again people reach for the ‘quick solution’ when  losing some weight, eating better and getting some exercise may be the only thing you need to do to engage again. And it’s not like all of those things aren’t good for your overall health anyway. Hmm….Men are you reading?

Helena: Loved your joke! Tooo funny.

Mike: I did not go – a bit out of my price range, but I hope that they had a successful turnout.

Doug: Thanks. You’re right.  This isn’t over.

Anna: You can also blame it on fast food restaurants such as McDonalds coming to town.  I am always shocked when I see a country that is healthy living off of their native traditional foods, and then a fast food restaurant enters the scene- the next thing you know there is an obesity problem not to mention other health problems like the ones you talked about. Hafa Adai.

Hi Evelyn:  Yeah, I figured when I saw no comments that something was up again. Thanks for your post. I am big on probiotics and I highly recommend Dr. David Williams. Health info has posted him before.

Hey Eunice: Thanks for your post. Like Doug and your post mentioned, we still need to finish this fight. If people can donate to both, hopefully they will.

Peace out.

Victorious? Yes! Health Care? Yes! Abortion Coverage?___

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 8th November 2009

Congratulations to everyone – Health care reform passed!  Yesterday was the big decision day, and after many days, many weeks and many months of pushing and fighting for reform, all of our hard work and the hard work of our president,  Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi and so many others, finally paid off.  I am delighted, I am relieved, and I am excited about the future.  A huge thanks to Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and so much thanks to all of you who made those phone calls and sent those e-mails, and worked hard and diligently to make this change happen.  It gave me hope once again, knowing that when we set our minds to do something, we make it happen.

The American people spoke up and we were heard. The system does work.  I have learned from this experience that if we really put time into what we believe in,  we can make what we desire happen.

Here’s a segment from a Huff Post article:

After months of debate, the House of Representatives passed historic health care reform legislation late on Saturday evening. Read the overview AP coverage HERE, and follow Twitter reaction HERE.

In a victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed landmark health care legislation Saturday night to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry. Republican opposition was nearly unanimous.

The 220-215 vote (click here to see how each member voted) cleared the way for the Senate to begin a long-delayed debate on the issue that has come to overshadow all others in Congress.

A triumphant Speaker Nancy Pelosi likened the legislation to the passage of Social Security in 1935 and Medicare 30 years later. “Oh, what a night!” she proclaimed at the beginning of a press conference held after the vote. Obama issued a statement saying, “I look forward to signing it into law by the end of the year.”

“It provides coverage for 96 percent of Americans. It offers everyone, regardless of health or income, the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will have access to affordable health care when they need it,” said Rep. John Dingell, the 83-year-old Michigan lawmaker who has introduced national health insurance in every Congress since succeeding his father in 1955.

To read the rest of the article click here.

However, it is not perfect. I hate to be negative on a day that one should be celebrating,  but once again women’s issues has  been put aside and not made a priority. I need to do a bit more reading but from what I have read, a strict abortion ban is included in the health care bill.  Abortion is a big issue, and important issue, one that women have not only fought continually for the rights, but now we are fighting for the rights to have coverage in our health care system.

And because this strict ban was included in the bill, should the bill have not been passed? Was there a provision in health care reform to ban Viagra from being covered? That will never happen. I mentioned that I had a bad experience from birth control pills and when I tried to switch from the generic brand, to the brand that I had taken before with no side effects, the prescription was not covered and it cost me $200 instead of $30. Will it be any different now with this new health care bill?

I can’t help but think, why is it that when it comes down to women and women’s issues, we as women, are the ones who are chosen to make sacrifices for others?

Here’s a segment from the Huff Post that I found:

WASHINGTON — A bipartisan House coalition voted Saturday to prohibit coverage of abortions in a new government-run health care plan that Democrats would establish to compete with private insurers.

The 240-194 vote on an amendment by Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., was a blow to liberals, who would have allowed the Obama administration and its successors to decide whether abortions would be covered by the government plan. Sixty-four Democrats joined 176 Republicans in favor of the prohibition.

Stupak’s measure also would bar anyone getting federal health subsidies from purchasing private insurance polices that included abortion coverage.

“Let us stand together on principle – no public funding for abortions, no public funding for insurance policies that pay for abortions,” Stupak urged fellow lawmakers before the vote.

The amendment would bar the new government insurance plan from covering abortions, except in cases of rape, incest, or where the life of the mother is in danger. The Democrats’ original legislation would have allowed the government plan to cover abortions, if the Health and Human Services secretary decided it should.

The amendment also would prohibit people who receive new federal health subsidies from buying insurance plans that include abortion coverage.

The Democrats’ original bill would have allowed people getting federal subsidies to pay for abortion coverage with their own money. Abortion opponents dismissed that as an accounting gimmick.

Abortion rights advocates called the measure the biggest setback to women’s reproductive rights in decades. Anti-abortion Democrats forced House leaders to bring it up for a vote by threatening to oppose the underlying bill, and efforts to reach a compromise fell apart Friday night.

You can read the entire article by clicking here. For future reference, click here for the list of Democrats who voted “Aye” on the Stupak-Pitts Amendment.

I just want to end with that I am happy that health care reform passed. I worked hard to ensure this, as many of you did. Many Americans that desperately need to be taken care, that will die should they not have it, will now feel safe and secure that they will have coverage, and a chance to live.

But I will say that I am disappointed that once again, the passing of something good came at a price for, once again, women. I long for and look forward to the day when women are truly revered, respected,  and women’s care and health is just as important as men’s care and health. We have lots of work ahead of us.

Readers: I have read some of your comments from yesterday but I am already late in posting so I will respond tomorrow. Comments? As usual….Blog me.

Flap Your Lips Friday

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 6th November 2009

Good morning. I can’t tell you how happy I am that it is Friday – I bet you all are too.

I woke up later than usual this morning and to my surprise I had a quite a few e-mails from you readers in regards to my write yesterday. That was very unusual. Besides the regulars chiming in here- you know who you are :), it seems some peeps were either shy, a little shocked, and a tad scared about my ship. Please don’t be. Evidently wrapping your mind was a bit too much! :) My apologies.

I was in a humorous mood, as I had mentioned, and speaking rather tongue-in-cheekish. Don’t mind me. I mean really, if we were on my ship, an all girl ship let me remind you, do ya think there would be all of these men aboard? (Sorry ZL, if you’re looking for a ship with testosterone, you might want to hitch a ride elsewhere.) I don’t think so….and if there were you can bet all the bad boys would be gone. I don’t know about you, but if you look at this planet, you can see, they’re all still here! Bummer.

I mean c’mon, I am sure that all of you heard the story of Nidal Malik Hasan and his crazy double fisted shoot-’em-up scene.  No, he wasn’t at war killing the enemy. He was at Fort Hood and evidently just a little pissed off that he was about to be deployed again to Afghanistan. Ok, so you don’t want to go. I can understand that.  But do you have to engage your own at-home war and go on a rampage killing your own kind?! 12 died and 31 were wounded.

And no his comrades were not armed. No weapons are carried on the army base unless the soldiers are performing training exercises. So no, soldiers were not armed to defend themselves. They were basically sitting ducks and running targets. “So sorry that we have to inform you that your son/husband was killed by a fellow soldier, here on U.S. soil.”

He ended the shooting by turning the gun on himself  - Talk about a gutless wonder.  And then we find out this that he wasn’t successful. Successful at killing all of his comrades but when it came to shooting himself, he survives. And quite frankly I’m glad that he did. I want him to face just what he did to his comrades, and pay dearly for it.

I just have to ask, why is it that when men feel they want to kill themselves, they have no problem taking others with them? It is so gutless and it happens time and time again. Why not just shoot yourself and be done with it? Why kill innocent people?

Are men so brutal minded, that they figure, ‘now is my chance to kill freely because I’m going to kill myself anyway, and this gives me the chance to do it…to be ruthless,  and get away with it’ ? I’m really trying to understand the lack of humanity. Is there that much barbarianism deep rooted in man?

I know there is more to say about this but I  am going to end it here. If today is the day for flapping your lips, feel free to do so here, on this topic or any other.

Oh…and thanks for letting me brag a bit about my ride yesterday. But no worries, you are definitely not aboard my ship, I assure you. However, for those of you girls who are still serious about joining me, the offer still stands. And yes, the beaches and mountains are spectacular, not to mention a few other delightful surprises that await you! :)

Peace & Love: “Can we all really live it and give it?”

“Why The Hell Is This Country Flogging Women In The First Place?”

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 28th October 2009

I was waiting for someone to say something about the article that Latifah linked, but no one did. Did anyone read it? Doesn’t anyone have anything to say or do you just accept what is happening because this isn’t happening here? The complacency of this country blows me away.

Not sure what I am referring to? Click here to read the article before you continue reading my write.

Well? Disgusting isn’t it? I mean did you even get it the first time you read it? I had to read it a few times because there was no feeling, no meat to the story. I just didn’t get it. Then it hit me right in my core. I realized they were talking about women in such a matter-of-fact fashion as if they were discussing something not human. Where was the emotion? We’re talking women here. Do you get that the humanity is missing in this article? And the fact that someone could read this, and say nothing, and move on. Just what does that say about humans?

The article should read: “Why the hell is this country flogging women in the first place?” I mean seriously, this article is basically saying that women are nothing more than dogs, and in my opinion, dogs living in the SPCA of Saudi Arabia. And really, that’s being kind. We’ve been told by such women that dogs get better treatment than they do. Women are nothing more than property….a piece of ass to own and use, as their men, their masters, see fit.

And, if their woman don’t obey? Well then they’ll hear it from their master, you can be assured of that. 20 lashes, 30 lashes, 300 lashes! You own that piece of meat; flog it, oh…but don’t flog it to death. There are conditions you know. Conditions! This article states what conditions these women can live…under the rules of their master, of course. It’s not discussing the fact that women can be flogged in the first place. Oh no, that is not the concern. That is never the concern. There is no question why this is happening; their masters, have the right to flog their women.

And just how much flogging is due to them? It is your dog, you own it, but you can’t flog it to death. So what is due to these women? Ask the king – he does the ruling. How many lashes? And what degree of day-to-day suffering should they endure? Hmmm…let’s see….Do we pull them in and shorten their leash? Do we put on a choke collar and yank when necessary? Or do we just ration out food and water and make them so dependent they wouldn’t dare consider straying? We’ll make our women loyal even if we have to practically kill them! Sickening. Am I right or what?

And what are the men in this country saying? Not much. If the men in this country could get women to be property again the men would be delighted. Think I am wrong? Do you see men objecting to this type of treatment to women in these countries? I don’t think so. Men have no problem doing business and making billions off of oil, with countries such as Saudi Arabia. It just goes to show you that men accept this behavior by other men, in order to get oil. You can’t deny that fact. If you do, ask the question, “Why do civilized nations accept this type of behavior from men in their midst, knowing that these men are treating one half of their population bad?” And I’m being kind here. The answer: Money.

You know what else is crazy? We send women over from our country to fight in the Middle East. For what? For the rights of men, not women. Our women are dying for the rights of men, not women. The same thing happened in Vietnam. Otw’s fought for our country, and then came home, not having the same rights as whites. So yes, the comment that Latifah referred to could happen. “…religious flakes could get away with it if they could.”

Why not - Who is objecting to this? No one. Anytime you think that is not true, look at the countries we support! Look at the countries we do business with. Money is more important than the lives of humans. It means more than anything to men. Hence they continue to do business with countries that rape and abuse their women all because they want more money…all for self-aggrandizement.

And when there comes a threat. Isn’t it interesting that when aliens are invading the world, the men come out…’Oh protect us – we need information!” Their lives are at risk. They have something to fear now. But what about the women in this world? Where’s their protection? You know the women that are raped and abused daily? I bet some women aren’t even afraid of the aliens. No, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the women are just hoping that those aliens snatch the bodies of their husbands or probe their tight little asses – how do you like it? “Please aliens, take my husband. All I ask is for freedom.” Freedom. Something, we here take for granted while others can only dream of it.

I read about that gang rape in Richmond that happened last Friday night. Police believe as many as a dozen people watched a 15-year-old girl get beaten and gang-raped by at least 5 boys, outside her high school homecoming dance without reporting it. What is wrong with these boys and what is wrong with their fathers who have not taught them to respect and revere women, not rape them? And the ones watching that did nothing? They are not innocent in this either! Water runs down hill and so does evil. When will this stop?

I am so sick of self-centered men…and you know who you are. Men who are so worried about their own lives, that the moment their little lives are threatened, they need information; they need to be protected. Only now do you scream to others because of what the aliens could possibly do to you. Meanwhile back in the SPCA of Saudi Arabia, ‘How bad should we flog this bitch?”

Men. Oh how they wish women in this country were their property once again. Dream on you little penis wonders – it’s not going to happen here – not on my watch.

I wrote to the women in Iran a while ago telling them that I needed them to be strong. Hell, women in Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, the Congo, the list goes on…they have been strong their whole lives. With so many years of being enslaved, they need love, they need freedom, they need a time where they can just be, with no worries of what they need to endure that day, that moment...

I can tell you, I am two minutes from releasing Madaline from wiping out the men in this world who enslave women, and yes the men too, that do nothing about it. You know who you are…you know who I’m talking to. This world is filled with them; men who are so self-centered and fixated on their own needs, their own self-interests, that they don’t think or won’t think past their own needs to even consider the needs of others, and god forbid the needs of women.

Why do you think Madaline and the aliens act as they do towards humans? Many say that they are arrogant. They aren’t arrogant; they just have huge brains that allows them to see how ludicrous we are. Our actions say we are nothing but animals. No wonder the aliens can’t see us any other way. The most vicious men, the top dog, gets to rule…and he rules by force. Less than 1% own 96% of our country. Do you think that the 1% wouldn’t strike a bargain with the aliens for their own self-aggrandizement? You bet some would.

When I talk to Maddie she tells me that when she views men all she sees is ‘self-interest’. “If whatever men are dealing in doesn’t benefit self, then they’re not interested.” She tells me that in order to free women, we need freedom from foreign oil. When that happens, then we can address women. We have to free men from their dependence on foreign oil, so that they can stand up and be noble to women, as if they really care.” And I stress, “…as if they really care.”

Do you get it? They don’t really care. If they did, they would be doing something NOW. All they care about is themselves and accumulating as much money as possible.

Wouldn’t it be just wonderful if men said, “We don’t want to do business with you until you give equal rights to women?” Yeah right – there’s nothing in it for men to say that. They don’t want to spend the energy to be energy independent; they want to live off the backs of women. Why is it the most vicious men get to rule? They do in all countries, and up until recently, our own country.

Why can’t we do business with Cuba? Cuba gives equal rights to women. Oh but no, they don’t want to do business with them because Cuba is a communist country. But it’s okay to do business with men who beat and rape and yes murder their women! Money is more important than the lives of humans. That just disgusts me to no end.

But thankfully Obama is our president, and he is smart. He knows that we need oil independence. He knows that he needs to play to men’s self-centeredness so that he can help the women. Otherwise, it will continue as it always has: The men will not stand up for the women; they can’t see past their own self-interest. We need to help them to help ourselves. If we are free from foreign oil, free from the men having any money, any interest overseas, we can then help the women. Do you see why Obama is trying to lead us into being energy independent? We need Obama to free us from foreign oil so that we can focus our efforts on freeing the women of our world. I know I am being redundant, but I can’t help it. The info needs to be drilled in.

Ya know, I think of how many times white women have been put down on my blog, how many times white women have been called stupid. And then I think of these Log Cabin Republicans. In case you don’t know who they are, this is a gay group of Republicans – a gay group of Republicans! Isn’t that an oxymoron? I mean c’mon, why are gays part of a party that is trying to make their existence illegal? This just goes to show you how stupid and pathetic white men are. That is like Jews forming a group called “Jews for Hitler”. Stupid and mind-boggling yes? So when we are quick to judge white women, when we are quick to say how stupid white women are, let’s look at the stupid white men. You don’t see lesbians for the Republican Party do you? – No, that would be ludicrous – women know better.

So yeah, I complain about some men, many men. Someone’s got to point it out. This blog exists to say no to shit like this! And when I complain about it, I am called a shrew. Sometimes I can’t help it, and even if I could, I don’t think I’d stop myself. If you think I’ve been shrill before, don’t think I’ll stop now; I’m a woman, hear me roar! And roar I will until we’re treated equally, until the abuses stop. Women are going to keep on screaming. We are going to take what belongs to us by whatever means necessary. That’s what the men do, right? That’s what Madaline means when she says, ‘Woman up.”

Even I need to ‘woman up’. How can I ever rest if women everywhere sleep with unrest? So don’t tell me I’m too shrill when I speak of women, Don’t tell me to grow up, while you defend men who act like children – What if it happened to you? I’ve seen men pathetically grovel when the tables are turned. I’ve seen men beg for their lives when their lives are threatened. But what about the women? They beg for just a day, or just an hour, or maybe just even a moment, for a place where they can feel safe and secure.

Where is the love and compassion for a woman? Some men are so self-involved, it ceases to exist. Men: They will die for free trade, but they won’t die for the right of a woman to be free.

Lastly, if our actions speak louder than our words, and our actions say we are nothing but animals, I ask you, “Where do you fit in, in this picture? What actions will you speak?”

Speaking of the flu shot, I agree ZL, I’m not taking it. Here’s a story of a woman who did.

Readers: Is Desiree’s nuerological disorder from the flu shot or something else? Could this be a coincidence or can the flu shot really be that dangerous for some? Thoughts? Blog me.

I need to run.
