Just Across The Border…..”Get your drugs…drugs and fresh cherries here!”

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 19th January 2009

So in my commitment to learn more about the plight of women in South America, I decided to focus my first research on Mexico as promised. What I learned in just a few minutes was shocking.

Mexico City:  Indiscriminate kidnappings and nearly daily Beheadings. Gangs that mock and kill government agents. Wha’at??  Have you heard such atrocities?  Our neighboring Mexico is becoming one of the world’s biggest security risks according to the US Government and some experts…..and the US Joint Forces Command lumps Mexico in with Pakistan as being at risk of a ‘rapid and sudden collapse’.

“The Mexican possibility may seem less likely, but the government, its politicians, police and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault and pressure by criminal gangs and drug cartels,” the command said in the report published Nov. 25.

It is reported that soldiers and police are outgunned and outnumbered, and drug cartels have responded with unprecedented violence. Mob murders doubled from 2007, taking more than 5,300 lives last year. The border cities of Juarez and Tijuana wake up each morning to find streets littered with mutilated, often headless bodies. This doesn’t sound like one or two when you use the word ‘littered’. Some victims are dumped outside schools. Most are just wrapped in a cheap blanket and tossed into an empty lot.  Many of the bodies go unclaimed because  the relatives are too afraid to say something.

So it seems that what Alita was telling us is true – not that I doubted her words when she made a comment the other day. I read that businesses have closed because they can no longer afford to pay the monthly extortion fees to the drug thugs. The rich are leaving, heading to the US, and the poor have no where to go, and as Alita said ‘they pay whoever is in charge to live in relative peace.’ I am aware of the drug problems in Mexico, but I had no idea that the cartel had that much control over the livelihood of the people living there.

So what about the women? If the drug cartels have that much control and the government is that corrupt, my guess is the women are being abused too.  When I think of all of the other countries where war, corruption,  and drugs, are the daily activity and major means of making a living, and I think of how the women are being abused, logic tells me that the women in Mexico are too. Carmen wrote in a few days back saying,  Our countries have been corrupted by rich white men who have destroyed the labor unions and forced the people to live in poverty so deep as to make harvesting drugs the only attractive means of making a living. Women here too are raped, forced into prostitution, bartered and sold as one would a car or dog.‘

This is what I found out: Tijuana is riddled with prostitution. This we know. Sexual slavery is prevalent in Mexico especially in Tijuana where men can cross the border and have sex with girls as young as 8-years old.  This I didn’t know. What is wrong with these men?! Young girls are kidnapped  from their small towns in Mexico and Central America and brought to the notorious red light district ‘Zona Rosa’, just a few blocks from the main tourist drag in Tijuana.  After the young girls work their apprenticeships in Tijuana, they are smuggled through a dangerous corridor that leads them to the US and eventually they end up in places such as New York’s illegal brothels, where they live as sexual slaves.  In a report in 2005, as many as 17, 500 sex slaves are smuggled into the US each year, according to the federal stats.

One group never made it that far and got busted. This ring of traffickers forced 50 girls to have sex with 300-500 men per day in a field of reeds just north of San Diego. The girls were given a piece of carpet or a towel to lay on, and an egg timer to keep track of their 10-minute sessions. Each man paid $20 for his window of time.

Are you thoroughly sickened yet? I have more…

If being forced to have sex isn’t enough, these girls are also pimped ‘bareback’ – meaning no protected sex, for a premium price.  And if she’s a virgin? They call them ”cherries” – who are prized for their fresh appearance and their supposed lack of sexually transmitted diseases. But what about the men? Yeah, maybe the girls are disease free, but not for long…what about the ‘Johns’? Who cares what the young girls get as long as the pimps get their ‘premium’ price, and ‘Johns’ get off.  What price do the girls pay to get an incurable disease? Endless suffering or worse, death.

Could it get any worse if they survive disease ? Oh yes….violence. It is prevalent too…and severe.

The pimps beat the girls with coat hangers, cables, beer bottles and belts. Many of them are forced to have abortions when they become pregnant and others are given crystal meth and cocaine so they become addicts.

The pimps also threaten to hurt the girls’ loved ones.

“They say, ‘We’ll kill your family.’ If they have babies, they say, ‘We’ll kill your babies,’” said Deputy Sheriff Rick Castro of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.

So it is quite probable that because the ‘rich white’ men have destroyed the labor unions in Mexico, harvesting drugs and prostitutes is the only attractive means of making a living. If men from the US, described as sex-hungrey tourists, didn’t cross the border to taste the young temptations or indulge in illegal brothels in NY, and the many other paces, would the demand for these young girls be so high that their men would resort to such actions? And what about their safety? Are the police doing anything about it? Nothing. During a recent trip to Zona Rosa, The News found dozens of cops standing by as hundreds of girls sold sex to strangers. The police looked the other way.

On a side note, I stumbled upon one article on  Mexico’s Beauty Queen, Laura Zuniga. A few weeks ago she was  arrested in the drug-plagued state of Sinaloa with suspected gang members. They were driving in a truck filled with a large stash of weapons, including two AR-15 assault rifles, 38 specials, 9mm handguns, nine magazines, 633 cartridges and $53,300 in U.S. currency.

Zuniga, Miss Sinaloa, is a former preschool teacher, and when she won her crown this last July she gave an impassioned speech about how society should value women more, especially mothers. Does this woman sound like the type that would be mixed up with drug thugs? Why does this sound shady to me? She sounds like an intelligent woman with a promising future….was she just innocently hanging out with the wrong kind of crowd, or does she just have a thing for bad boys?

Or perhaps worse….was she being kidnapped and told to keep her mouth shut when they were arrested?  She was with seven men and arrested shortly before midnight when the police pulled over one of two trucks that she was riding in. When questioned, she told the police that she was planning on traveling to Bolivia and columbia with the men to go shopping.  Hmm….at  midnight? Seven men and her? Again….this just doesn’t sound right to me. Who knows what these men were planning on doing with her. She may be linked to one of the drug cartels, but who knows what kind of hold he has over her.  Could she have been kidnapped, and blackmailed…go along or die? For all we know he was pimping her out at a ‘premium’ price. My gut tells me she’s innocent and she was forced to go along with whatever plan they had in mind.

So, how are these women enduring this? I have written about the plight of many women in this world, and like most, they suffer terribly. The victimized girls are reluctant to go to authorities because they feel a crippling sense of shame. Those that are living here illegally, don’t trust law enforcement because authorities in their hometowns either profit from the sex-slave trade or do nothing to prevent it. Yes there are women who go into prostitution but when you’re talking about women or children who are brought in under false pretenses (bogus ads),  that is not voluntary.

Human trafficking.  The should call it ‘women trafficking’. I haven’t heard too many stories of men being held as sex slaves. The seductive lure of bogus ads that the women are drawn to and answering, are ads directed at women, not to men

This has got to change. As always it saddens and hurts me to the core that my fellow sisters around the world are suffering on a daily basis…and it is getting worse. On the one hand I feel that the world is getting more conscious, loving, and accepting….a sense of community and world citizenship…and on the other hand there is more hatred, racism, sexism, separateness, and barbaric actions, especially towards women. The extreme poles are pushing against each other. Who will prevail?

Readers: What will you do? Comments? I’m listing a few private and government agencies that can help if you know someone who is a victim or you suspect this is happening in your area.

Note: I pulled these from an article that was a few years old. More agencies may now exist.

8 Years In 8 Minutes

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 17th January 2009

Good morning….

I slept in late…for once in a very long time. Doug joined me and and I have to say it was delightful to not be in a rush to get up. I needed this. Therefore, I have very little time to be with all of you this morning….as alas…it is another work day. Hmm….

So I decided to post an 8-minute version of Bush’s 8 years. Thank you Keith Olbermann. It is a bit of shock and awe, but at this point…nothing should shock us.  if you haven’t seen it, it is so worth your time, as well as passing it around for all to see.  Yes, peeps that is who we voted in.  We brought this upon ourselves.

Here’s a few stats from the video:

  • We are now 10 trilllion in debt!
  • Median income down $2000.
  • Unemployment up from 4.2% to 7.2
  • The dow down 10,587 to 8,277
  • 6 million more now in poverty.
  • 7 million more now without heathcare.
The list goes on and on…

Not to mention Bush’s criminal acts.  Enough.

So what can we do about it now? Prosecute. This man must be prosecuted. If we don’t move toward prosecution, we will have set a precedent that  could take our country to a worse state than it is now.  If Bush isn’t prosecuted it tells the world that some people are above the law. What grounds will a law hold if it is not applied to everyone? Oh…If I were Bush I’d be shaking in my cowboy boots.

*********

ZL: Dates?  Oh…you’re getting too far ahead for me. I need to consult. I’ll check in with you tomorrow.

Hi Riis: How wonderful! I wish I was attending the ceremonies. Please write back in and tell us all about it.

Hello Mahima:  Thank you for being persistant and writing in. I am aware that this movie was very Bollywood and far from the real lives and the plight of women in India. I saw this movie and appreciated it strictly for the art form and the love story. Sometimes one just has to slip into a  dream. Movies tend to do that. And as much as I am drawn to real life movies (do any really truly exist besides documentaries?), I am also drawn to those that give me hope. This was one of those.

So that being said, I am grateful that you have written in to tell the truth of what really happens…and what real life is, compared to what others want us to see and believe. I am not naive to what you have spoken of, nor did I not question the glossing over of some scenes. I have heard of the burnings and it stuns me knowing that it ever happened in the first place, let alone that it still continues to this day now.

The more that I learn of the plight of women around the world, the more fuel I have for my fighting fire….the more I want to do. Thank you.

Hi Doug: This exact subject has been in my blog notes for weeks. Thanks for bringing it up. Hopefully I will get around to chatting about it myself in the next day or so. Oh…so many subjects to write about and so little time. Until then…

Readers:  Here is the website for you to sign the petition to help reverse Bush’s final attack on reproductive-health services.  Women need your support now. Thanks.

Bye Bye Bush

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 16th January 2009

Good Morning…

Well…I didn’t get to see Bush’s farewell speech last night, but honestly, I really didn’t care to. I mean what could he possibly say in his final words when his actions have said it all? Oh yeah, I can just see him squeeking out excuses of how he had to make some ‘tough decisions’…blah blah blah. No thank you.  I did peek at a few minutes of it and I just couldn’t watch any more. The only thing that went through my mind was, ‘wimpy, wimpy, wimpy.’  I know I’ll look back at the Bush years (if I ever grant him more than a moments thought), as just a really long bad dream, that unfortunately was our reality for eight years. And yes, let’s not forget, there are lessons to be learned here. We do not want to repeat this part of history EVER. I am so delighted that for the next four+ years a real man will be running our country.

I’ve given all the space I want to give to Bush this morning…So what else?

I’m sure all of you heard about the plane crash in the Hudson River – amazing save. It was the talk of the day yesterday, and Bush didn’t even bring it up in his farewell speech. Talk about disconnect – Dare I expect anything more from him in his final days that is anything different than the last 8 years? Unfortunately no.  But didn’t I say I already gave him all the space I want to give him today? Okay I’m done.

Anyway, back to plane crash – what a pilot…talk about having to make a tough decision…under stress, in a short amount of time – ‘Good’ tough decisions, one should be rewarded for. He obviously made the ‘right’ touch decision. ‘Wrong’ tough decisions shouldn’t get rewarded just because they were ‘tough’. Oh, but Bush expects to.  He could take a lesson from this pilot. Yes, he thinks that just because he made some ‘tough decisions, albeit they were ‘wrong’ decisions, he thinks he should get credit. Well let me tell ya Bush, “The only thing I’m going to give you credit for is for screwing up our country. And I blame us for being stupid enought to elect you again.” Yeah, even though I didn’t elect him, we are all accountable. No excuses.  Okay, I know, I know…I just had to throw in one last one. :)

Really…I’m done.

~~~~~~~~
Hi ZL:  In honor of women around the world and their desire to blossom, I have this vision of thousands coming from everywhere embracing their favorite flower: a representation of the blossoming beauty within themselves, or if held by a man: a flower that represents his blossoming love….creating a sea of beauty and color.  Hmm…just the beginning of this peaceful lovefest protest…
Anyway…Happy Birthday to Miss Lily! Give her a big hug and kiss from us.  Nine years? Feels like we have known each other much longer….I too am honored. I remember the day that we met – such fun. And the fun continues…. :)
Hello Anonymous:  Any woman would love to be the receiver of this beautiful poem. Are you a known poet?  I would not be surprised if you were.
Hi Anonz:  Short and sweet. Thanks always, for enlightening us on such that we are not privy to. I hope that you are getting done what you need. Be safe.
Hello Thomas:  Lorri’s cousin.  Sorry about that yesterday. Seeing a flying saucer is an incredible thing to say the least! Lucky you. I wish I could say that I saw what you saw. I also wish you had gone into more detail in your comment. Any chance you could come back and tell more?  Thanks.
Well…it’s that time. Happy Friday!
The Gallant vs The Goofus
Posted by Michelle Moquin on 15th January 2009
Hello everyone. I just had to share this with you this morning because it is just so hilarious.  Jon Stewart from The Daily Show compares Obama to Bush when it comes to how they handle press conferences.  I think you’ll get a kick out of it too.
***********
Hi Zen Lill: Thank you. This type of article is so easy for me to write because no research is needed; it is straight from my heart  and the words just flow. I wish every article was just as fluid…but then again I might get bored if there was no challlenge, so I’ll take it as they come. Anyway, yes of course, you may lift a line or two if you choose.
So Nashville – wow – didn’t know they were based out there. Good luck with that – I am sure you will do well. Let’s try and talk before you leave ok?
As far as organizing a protest…I’ll call it a ‘Lovefest Protest’.  Whatever happens it needs to be done in a nonviolent way – no riots, no craziness.  Hmm…Where to begin?  We and others need to brainstorm.  And maybe flowers should be involved. I feel inspiration blossoming….
Hello Alita: My pleasure. I will need a couple of days to fulfill your request. I am aware of the drug problems but until I mapped San Cristobal de las Casas, (state of Chiapas) I really had no idea where it was. It is named one of the most stunning scenic areas in Mexico, mostly wild and rugged with thickly wooded jungles, mountains and valleys. Sounds like a good stomping ground for the drug smugglers to do business and hide out.
Your e-mail is not showing up with your comment, which is best. You sound like a very intelligent woman and I would not to put you or your job in jeopardy by exposing your identity to your corrupt government.  The best way for us to correspond is via my blog.
Hello Dnsr: An acronym for? I do love that song too and you are very welcome. So…you must be a singer?  Happy that I inspired it for your repetoire – will we ever get to hear it? Not sure who Bnmv is (another scronym?), but I would love to hear about your findings in Sri Lanka. As far as seeing you in sultry SF – ooh sounds so mysterious. My guess is you are performing somewhere here and that is an open invitation to come and listen. Oh…now I need to check out the SF scene and see if I can discover who you are. Oh why not just give it up? :)
Hi Lorri:  Thanks for continuing to try and get in! How fab – please encourage your brother…oops cousin, to write in – thank you!
Enjoy this beautiful day!
Gratefully your blog host,
michelle
A Paranormal ‘Incident’?
Posted by Michelle Moquin on 13th January 2009
I wonder if our friends in the UK have been trying to post here? I just got a heads up about the ‘Octopus UFO’ that flew in the sky and collided into a wind turbine a week ago, ripping off one of its 65-foot blades!
Hmm….is Azza back in town or just our Madaline having a little too much fun? Or something else? Oh…please chime in and make yourself known. We would love to know more of the details!
It has been reported by people living in a nearby town of Lincolnshire (Oh love that name; it is just so Brit!), that strange orangey-yellow lights were headed in the direction of the said wind farm earlier in the evening.  And then surprise!  Those same peeps were awakened at 4 am by the sounds of crashing and smashing…the wind turbine was getting chewed up in a bad way.
“It looked like a giant explosion in the air,” said one local. Another witness said he saw a “massive ball of light with tentacles going right down to the ground. … It was huge. With the tentacles it looked just like an octopus.” Hundreds have reported seeing the same phenomenon.
An Octopus eh? Now, too bad we don’t have a photo. Out of all of those people woken up by this monstrosity, no one bothered to grab a camera to document this exciting event? Bummer.
So it appears that one blade was completely torn off the giant windmill, and has yet to be found. While the remaining blade was totally mangled. Ha!…It looks just like one of my forks that fell into the garbage disposal one time.
UFO experts “are very excited” by the prospect that the crash could have been caused by a paranormal incident.
Incident? Not sure I would call that an ‘incident’. Unless the UFO thought it was getting into a skirmish with another type of ship. Or it was alien who thought he could wrestle the being with the whirling blade-like appendages. (Can you see the visual?) No I wouldn’t call it an ‘incident; more like a paranormal ‘accident’. I think it’s funny.
Readers:  What about you? Comments? blog me. (Especially if you are from the UK – would love to hear about your experience.)
Hi Zen Lill:  No biggie – happy that you were having fun with Miss Lily. I love riding go-carts, and yes I am laughing the entire time too – Doug is the driver and all I do is scream and laugh – it is so much fun! Maybe we will go soon Doug?
Thank you for saying all that you said. I was a bit surprised to hear such words from you. Delighted of course that I could be that for you. Thank you for saying so. It is my lifetime goal to inspire others…not necessarily to be like me – how boring that would be…However if you recognize certain things in me, know that you hold these too :) lol..you are too busy being you to be me! Be you – you are perfect as you are.
Hello D’r'fa:  I am sorry but thank you for trying…seems you did get in…finally. May peace and safety be yours soon.
Hello Nadia: If ZL wants to repost it here for you, that is fine with me.
Hi Croe:  I have heard the same and was just ‘disgussing’ that same topic with Doug last night. That’s my new word…a morphing of ‘disgusting’ and ‘discussing’ – saved for topics of discussion that disgust me. And Bush fits the bill. Oh, I hope he takes a nice long vacation in a foreign country that doesn’t treat their criminals so kindly.
Hi Phillip:  Good to hear from you. Interesting comment.  I get what you mean. And, I agree with you. Although he did say that he aspired to be a dictator, I don’t think that he has the brains to ‘contemplate’ being a dictator either. You’re thinking logically – which is good. But you’re forgetting that Bush isn’t very logical.
My point is…does it matter whether he has the brains to contemplate it or not? He doesn’t have the brains to be a president either but he was voted in twice! As long as he surrounds himself with the right puppeteers, the strings will be pulled and shit will get done. – that has been proven. So, if the American people were stupid enough to vote him in twice, I wouldn’t put it past them to help him in his aspirations should he ever get the opportunity. The fact that he blatantly said that and nothing was written about it in the media – no one said a word….Except for Doug sitting next to me in shock, and  now Carmen’s comment from yesterday), the American people have expressed their ‘boneheadedness’ again. And yes, I’m making up my own word again…but it works doesn’t it? :)
hello Lashkar Gar: I hear you loud and clear. And I too am wishing for our oil independence, not only for us but also for the many women whose lives need to desperately change. You have my support too and I am grateful for yours.
Hi Gereshk:  Good to hear from you. I know how true it is as I have read and heard the stories from others just like your brother. It is so sad and disturbing to know that this atrocity breathes on a daily basis. I hope that my column and others like it can help but I know more must be done besides making people aware. Awareness is only the beginning.
How narrow-minded that the Islamic council thinks that I am anti Islamic. Far from it. Just another excuse to control their women. What I am is anti slavery and anti rape..and really any type of abuse to their women and children. I am for women’s rights and that means I am for them loosing control of their said property.  Oh I know that just doesn’t sit well with the Islamic men.  Control is a biggie.
To the rest of my readers who posted a comment yesterday: I apologize that I cannot address you today – work calls, but I promise tomorrow I will speak to you.
peace out….
Gratefully your blog host,
michelle
