Racism Is Out Of Remission And Growing Stronger

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 17th November 2008

As much as I’d like to believe that racism is diminishing in the world, I know that it is just not true.   It is a disease that is rampant and I’m afraid there is not cure except for extermination. It is a disease that may go into remission until something draws it out. Obama winning the election was the catalyst, as racism is showing up stronger. Will it come to extermination at some point, or will the racists wake up and just get over the color of one’s skin?  Unfortunately, I have little faith that it will be the latter.

Doug gave me an article the other day after Anonz made comments about the RNC’s plans to insure that the media focuses on OTW crimes against whites during Obama’s  tenure, and to spend as much money as they can to pit the OTW’s against each other…all in the name of keeping the whites in power and wealth. As I said, racism is a disease and Obama being elected into office was the catalyst for this disease to come out of its remission. It is threatened and it will do anything it needs to do to insure its growth and survival, which means the destruction of anything OTW.

This article focused on events that have been happening around the US since November 5th when Obama was voted our president elect. Here are only a few of the hundreds that have been reported:

Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting “Assassinate Obama.” Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.

_Black figures were hanged by nooses from trees on Mount Desert Island, Maine, the Bangor Daily News reported. The president of Baylor University in Waco, Texas said a rope found hanging from a campus tree was apparently an abandoned swing and not a noose.

_A black teenager in New York City said he was attacked with a bat on election night by four white men who shouted ‘Obama.’

_In the Pittsburgh suburb of Forest Hills, a black man said he found a note with a racial slur on his car windshield, saying “now that you voted for Obama, just watch out for your house.”

_Four North Carolina State University students admitted writing anti-Obama comments in a tunnel designated for free speech expression, including one that said: “Let’s shoot that (N-word) in the head.” Obama has received more threats than any other president-elect, authorities say.

_At Standish, Maine, a sign inside the Oak Hill General Store read: “Osama Obama Shotgun Pool.” Customers could sign up to bet $1 on a date when Obama would be killed. “Stabbing, shooting, roadside bombs, they all count,” the sign said. At the bottom of the marker board was written “Let’s hope someone wins.”

_Racist graffiti was found in places including New York’s Long Island, where two dozen cars were spray-painted; Kilgore, Texas, where the local high school and skate park were defaced; and the Los Angeles area, where swastikas, racial slurs and “Go Back To Africa” were spray painted on sidewalks, houses and cars.

_Second- and third-grade students on a school bus in Rexburg, Idaho, chanted “assassinate Obama,” a district official said.

_University of Alabama professor Marsha L. Houston said a poster of the Obama family was ripped off her office door. A replacement poster was defaced with a death threat and a racial slur. “It seems the election brought the racist rats out of the woodwork,” Houston said.

In addition, some remarks being reported:

Potok, who is white, said he believes there is “a large subset of white people in this country who feel that they are losing everything they know, that the country their forefathers built has somehow been stolen from them.”

Grant Griffin, a 46-year-old white Georgia native, expressed similar sentiments: “I believe our nation is ruined and has been for several decades and the election of Obama is merely the culmination of the change.

“If you had real change it would involve all the members of (Obama’s) church being deported,” he said.

Change in whatever form does not come easy, and a black president is “the most profound change in the field of race this country has experienced since the Civil War,” said William Ferris, senior associate director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina. “It’s shaking the foundations on which the country has existed for centuries.”

Thanks Doug. There were more but too many to list – you get the point. Obama in office is a great thing but unfortunately it is bringing out the worst in racism. And all that being said, not surprisingly Obama has had more death threats than any other president elect, and my guess it will continue throughout his tenure.

I felt the community coming together during the election process but now I see it was only those in favor of Obama. The racists came together all right but their agenda was totally different. Community in their mind starts with a ‘w’ but ‘world’ is not the word.  And now I am thinking racial issues are going to be even more challenging because the racist whites are feeling threatened and it seems they will stop at nothing to regain the control that they have lost.

Now anonz has informed us of the cultish ways of the Mormon church. And now the RNC wants to legitimize this faith so that it will be accepted by the rest of America!  You’ve got to be kidding me. I don’t know much about this so-called religion except the widely known polygamy aspects and the ‘keeping down’ of their women – which is disturbing enough.

But to hear that Theocracy is the goal of the leaders of the Mormon cult and that the RNC is backing them in this is downright scary. This is not only a threat to OTW’s but to the women in this country on a level that could be worse than we have ever experienced before.

Thanks Anonz. I have to think about this and let it all sink in….Readers: do you all realize what anonz is saying or am I the only one that is seeing the detriment in his words? Or am I just thinking the worst? We know how powerful the RNC is. We know how stubborn racism is and just what is capable when racists and sexists are threatened.

Hi Nawzad: In regards to your comment. Thank you for your kind words. I am torn. Sometimes I have that same dream too. You live in a world that could be my reality someday.

Hi Sherie: I too enjoy hearing from the aliens but they are on their own right now. I’m sure at some point they’ll check in. But I know what you mean…it is fascinating to hear the ‘space talk’.

Tal, Viv, Gleia:  Anything you want to add here – please comment if you are available.

Hi Zen Lill:  No worries. I understand. I hope that you are successful in your practice. :)

The turnout of this election has spurred much.  I am disgusted at what I am learning. Comments? Blog me. I got to go.

On My Mind…

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 16th November 2008

I usually wake up with an agenda of some sort..something to write about. But this morning, there is not one topic that is in the forefront of my mind so I thought I would just chat about whatever is on my mind as it enters my mind.

However, ‘patience’ might be something to keep in mind while reading my write today since in normal everyday conversation, it is a well-known family characteristic that the chit chat tends to go in many different directions at once. That may happen here as I write contemporaneously with my thoughts.

I grew up in a family where a mish mash of thoughts, ideas, suggestions etc., gets thrown around the room, and up against the wall creating overflowing laughter and multi dialogue as we passionately talk over each other until one topic grabs our attentions…if only for a few moments. I have to say, that I love it. And really, that I appreciate the openness and warmth. One can only truly appreciate the free-for-all bantering when one finds themselves in a situation where silence is the pink elephant in the room.

Not that I can’t be silent…but why? Especially when I am surrounded by people…even if it is someone I don’t even know. What better way to get to know them than by striking up a conversation. The more silent a person is the more challenged I am. Or maybe I’m just feeling uncomfortable in my own silence that I need to break it. Okay, we’re talking around a dinner table or at a party, not at a funeral. :)

So this actually happened to me the other night when I went to a party at a restaurant in celebration of Prop 2.  I walked up to the table and realized that not only did I not know one person at the table but that I also felt that I could be the mother of at least 2/3′s of them. The first realization bothered me for a second only because I was looking forward to seeing some of the people that I phone banked with, and the latter not at all. The majority of them I found out were students at UC Berkeley.

I sat down at the corner seat and introduced myself.  There were a few minutes of silence and then the conversation started to flow. I discovered that the young man next to me was married to the woman across from him. Both of them at the young age of 18 enrolled in the Marine Corps with high hopes of travel and making a good living. They met around their second year in their 5-year commitment while they were both studying ‘Arab linguistics.’  ’Oh now this is getting good’, I thought to myself. They fell in love and right after they got married….yep, he was shipped of to his first term in Iraq.  Evidently this young man had mastered the language very quickly and his services were needed to translate in Iraq.

Boy, did I have a lot of questions then.  First he informed me that when he got to Iraq the language was so different from what he had learned that he needed to re-learn it from the locals for another 4 months before he could begin his work.

My mind was so curious….And what about the weapons of mass destruction? Oh there were many conversations between him and his comrades – they knew there were none.

How long were you there? What experience impacted you the most out there? What did you learn about yourself? About the Iraqi people?  Did I feel like I was prying? A bit. But he never once said that he didn’t want to talk about it so I didn’t let up. People interest me. I didn’t want to hear the gory details; I was more interested in his thoughts and how it may have changed his life or his perspective on life.

Everything he told me seemed pretty matter of fact until he started talking about the Iraqi people. Then his face lit up. He said that the people were so kind and helpful to him. That he worked with many of the locals and they were more than happy to assist him in any way they could.

On another note…his wife informed me that her brother had also served in Iraq and every member of his platoon were killed except him and a handful of other men. And when he got home and was in dire need of support – his mind couldn’t handle all that he saw and he started to have seizures – the VA thanked him for his duties and graciously paid 20% of his health bills. Gee thanks, that is so kind of you. After going to court he was able to get them to pay 60%. But now she says that in his present mental condition he does not have the wherewith all to fight for more. So he lives…

How unfair it is that all of these young men and women fight for our country, which they have chosen to do, only to come home to feeling abandoned by their country that they dedicated and risked their lives for. I understand that someone signs up for duty. They are aware of the risks and the atrocities that happen during war time. But…and this is a big but…is it too much to ask for that they be given 100% paid for health care? Is it too much that they be given what ever emotional or physical support is needed to help get them back to a state or normalcy, if even possible?

My time is over.

Political Dance Off!

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 13th November 2008

Oh…forgive me this morning but I was just too tempted  to have a little fun with our past running mates. I have a big day today so this little video is strictly for your pleasure. Hopefully you’ll get a hoot out of it – I did. Although it is a bit hokey – their mouths are doing some really weird things but overall ya gotta love technology.

And if that isn’t enough to entertain you, you can always see more at the Mini Movie Channel where I’m sure you can be entertained for hours.  My suggestions: ‘Dancing With The Political Stars’ and ‘Hilary’s Humps’.  And then my next suggestion: ‘Get a life because you have way too much time on your hands!’.

Zen Lill: I would adopt ‘Ears’ too! He is too adorable. I was at the gas station the other day and I saw this chinese hairless dog in a car window so of course I went up to the family so that I could say ‘hello’ to the little pupster. He was too cute and and felt so soft. I was informed that you have to apply lotion and sunscreen to protect their skin. But between Lucy and myself, hair is everywhere – this would be the remedy.

And, speaking of time…mine’s run out.

Which Pup Will Be Chosen For The Presidential Pooch?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 12th November 2008

You know I was so excited for the election to be over so that I could get back to writing about my other passions in life, write about other important issues besides, ‘Who’s gonna be the next president?’…but as you can tell, I am having a hard time letting go. In fact, as delighted as I am about Obama being the President elect, I feel a bit sad that it is all over. I loved the camaraderie that was so present in the community. It’s like we were all in it together, for once…and really, we were. I loved feeling the connection, being a part of something big, and seeing the progress towards a common goal.

I didn’t have much time to focus on myself, which was a good thing. But now?…time to get back to real life and focus on my life a bit. Although I have to say, it was much more fun focusing on something else.

So, excuse me if it takes me awhile to let this election and everything surrounding this election go. It was a big election and quite frankly, employed some pretty important issues, so at some point or another they will continue to show up here. The election is over, but our economy and the many issues and topics of interest happening around the world are far from over.

Okay, so onto the topic of today…one of my fav subjects to talk about:

Which Pup Will Be Chosen For The Presidential Pooch?

Well…we know that they need a hypoallergenic one because Malia, their daughter is allergic. I heard that they were looking for a Goldendoodle which is a hybrid of a Poodle and a Golden Retriever. And in my opinion, a fake dog.  Yes, they’re cute but over-bred…the latest in designer dogs, next to the Labradoodle, another popular hybrid dog. Not a good choice for the First Family and certainly not a good message to the American people, when it is widely known that over 4 million pooches are put to death every year.

Obama did say that he wanted to adopt a rescue dog from the shelter (yippie!), “A mutt like me”, he joked. So I doubt that it is going to be a Goldendoodle – not many of those in need of rescuing.  And even if there was, I still think it would send the wrong message.  The last thing we need is for Americans to be heading to the breeders ordering their Goldendoodle puppy just ’cause the First Family has one.

“But ever since President-elect Obama mentioned to the world that his kids are getting a puppy, dog lovers around the world have been panting with anticipation to learn what kind of dog will become ‘first pup’.”  It is a fido frenzy out there!

So, I hear that Peru has suggested its native Peruvian hairless dog, a bald, toothless breed, which in my opinion looks cuter than it sounds. Ugly can be cute and hey at least you don’t have to worry about him chewing up the ‘first furniture’.  You tell me – here’s a photo:

This little precious 4-month-old pup named Machu Picchu is nicknamed “Ears,” ( Gee, I wonder why? :) was offered formally to the future first family in a letter sent to the U.S. Embassy. Also noted was that this little breed was once favoured by Inca rulers.

Hmm…not exactly the typical choice of a breed for the White House, but then the Obama’s certainly aren’t typical. Nope no same same here – thankfully.

Lastly, it’s a difficult decision but I am sure that they will make an informed conscious one, and….the bottom line is, the pup will be well loved, I’m sure.

Readers:  Any guesses on what the Obama’s will do? Blog me.

************

Hey Doug: Prop 8 should never have passed. As Olbermann said, ‘Do unto others…’ But people fail to honor that because it is not happening to them.

Hi ZL: Yes, I believe in the power of love too, and it shows face in very strange ways sometimes. And speaking of food…these friends up here in No Cal could help relieve the pressure cooker – come cook for us!

Hi Carl: You’re welcome.

Hey Heather: My feelings exactly. The effects of the economy as well as so many other things can have a huge affect on us…but this? In my mind, non whatsoever. There is so much more to be concerned about in life.

Anonymous: I’m not avenging anyone. My motto is still ‘Peace & Love: Live it, Give It.’ But who am I to step in the way of someone else’s  personal destiny? I wouldn’t want someone to butt in my life and prevent me from doing what I felt that I needed to do, regardless of whether that person understands or agrees with me or not. It’s called freedom‘the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.’ I’m all for that. I am in control of my life and I want it to stay that way. Somehow in spite of what you say, you feel the same – no?

My motto: ‘Peace & Love: Live it, Give It.’

Isn’t Love Worthy of Supporting?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 11th November 2008

I feel bad because I didn’t put any time into Prop 8. I focused on prop 2 for the farm animals because, simply put,  I really thought that Prop 8 would not pass…not here in liberal California. Boy was I wrong.  Yeah we’re liberal here but only in the coastal cities – I forget how drastically life and attitudes change when you head inland; It’s like going to another state.

What is it with people out there who just have such an issue with other people being happy and being able to express their love and commitment, regardless of whether they understand that love, and whether they like it or not?  Why would you want to prevent people from being able to marry and form a union of love?  Isn’t love a good thing? Shouldn’t we support the act of love in any way we can? Isn’t there enough hate in this world that we should all be delighted to be proponents of love between people? Shouldn’t we cheer love in any way we can?

To all of those people out there who voted yes on prop 8:  How would you feel if someone said to you:

‘Oh..sorry, you can’t marry the one that you are in love with. The law has changed.  I know it’s not any of my business who or why you love someone, but I don’t think it’s right for you to marry someone of the opposite sex anymore. Nope, you’ve lost your privilege, you’ve lost your rights.   I don’t think your love should be recognized and honored anymore, So sorry.  I mean, divorce rates are over 50% for heterosexuals so what does it matter whether you have the right to marry anymore? – After all…you have a big chance of it not working out. Get over it. ‘

‘But let me go and live my life married to the person that I love.  Same-sex marriages are the only marriages that are honored now.  I get to have the chance to make marriage work; I get to honor my commitment to the one I love, even if you don’t. Even though I have the freedom to marry my partner in life, sorry, you don’t get the opportunity to be married, because you don’t have the right to get married anymore.  Times have changed.  See ya. Have a good life. ‘

This fight is a kick back to the late 60′s when racial marriage was illegal in 16 states- It was wrong then to prohibit those that wanted to get married and it is wrong now.  To me marriage is a celebration of love and commitment. Sometimes it is just about mergers and acquisitions, but the point is….for whatever reason one is getting married, one should have the right to do so. And that includes everyone.

Out of all things to fight for in this world…things that really matter, things that effect us, we have people fighting over the rights of others to seal their commitment of love, something that has no affect on us whatsoever, but has a huge affect on those wanting to seal their commitment with marriage.   How silly and even more so, how selfish. Can we just get past this? It is none of our business who the parties are that are involved. Love is love…and isn’t love worthy of supporting?

Keith Olbermann from MSNBC said more than a few words on this worthy of listening to.
