Were You Delighted Or Did You Gasp And Call For the Fashion Police?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 10th November 2008

Good Monday Morning.

So there has been chitchat that my ears have been perking up to…all in regards to Michelle Obama’s Election Day dress.  My first impression was, ‘Oh so mod, and bold, and so not like ‘The First Lady’! I was delighted to see someone in her position take a chance and go for the unusual. But then I am always wanting to see the more interesting in the fashion world.  But don’t get me wrong, there is a fine line between ‘interesting’ and just plain ‘weird’.  To me,  this was not the latter. I was cheering her on and to me the entire Obama family made a bold statement: ‘We are a family who are in this together.’

First Ladies usually wear American designers…you know a pc thing. But more on the safe side: Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera to name a few.  And Michelle Obama has followed suit by going ‘American’, however, Narciso Rodriquez, the American designer of this fashion statement, is not necessarily on the top of the ‘First Ladies’ designer list, which to me is a statement in itself.  Rodriguez is a designer who is not necessarily classic but one who can be a bit more edgy, perhaps because he is influenced by his hot cuban roots.  Michelle’s choice of him shows us that she is not only intelligent but that she has a mind of her own when it comes to fashion and making a statement that is truly her own.  I look forward to seeing more.

However, I have been hearing that the speckled pattern was ‘distracting’ and it was ‘lava lamp’ looking. Ha! I think that’s funny. Did you feel that way? Hmm…to me it was artsy and visually striking…a woman who is not sure of herself would not be able to pull off this combination.

I will say one thing though, I did think that the cardigan was a bit of an afterthought that could’ve been left at home. I was dying to see just the dress alone….and alone I think it might have looked a bit more sophisticated and bold. But that’s me – I like to go for the major ‘wow’ factor. However, Michelle is a public figure now and a very important one. The sensible cardi may have been a smart move on her part…it showed us that there is a sensible side to her too, which I think people want to see.  She is thinking.

Just my two on the psychology of dress. :) The bottom line is, I think we have a well rounded woman as the ‘first lady’, and I think she looked great.

Readers: What do you think? Give me your two – blog me.

*******

Doug: I commented on your blog already but thanks for including it here – I thought it was a fun comparison.

Anonz: I  understand your position, and I will respectfully butt out of your life. You have no need not to trust me – As you ask, so it shall be. You have my word.

Yesterday, I contacted Madaline, and I gave her the new order:  ’The moment Anonz steps foot onto Darfur soil remove his protection.’ She has already confirmed the order.

Again, I wish you  peace and safety, and a shit load of luck – go kick some ass.

Zen Lill: Oh I have been there…maybe not with 30 women giving me ‘the looks’ – that is funny…but I’m sure they’ve all been there at some point in their lives.

I’m outta here…

Wise Words…Are They Words A President Should Heed?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 9th November 2008

Good morning…

I had heard about the letter that Alice Walker sent to Barack Obama, (did Obama not bring this up in one of his speeches?) but I had not read it till a friend of mine sent me a message on Facebook. I found it to be inspirational, written from the heart. I felt the care and concern, nurturing words; words that a mother might say to her son, and how appropriate since Obama’s Mother and Grandmother have passed.

I believe them to be wise words, but are they words…words a President should heed? What do you think? Do you think Alice’s advice to Obama is worth paying attention to?  I’m not interested in breaking down the letter and telling you my thoughts; I’m more interested in hearing yours. So, I posted the letter for your perusal. What to share your thoughts? Blog me.

An Open Letter to Barack Obama

By Alice Walker | TheRoot.com

Alice Walker on expectations, responsibilities and a new reality that is almost more than the heart can bear.

Nov. 5, 2008

Dear Brother Obama,

You have no idea, really, of how profound this moment is for us. Us being the black people of the Southern United States. You think you know, because you are thoughtful, and you have studied our history. But seeing you deliver the torch so many others before you carried, year after year, decade after decade, century after century, only to be struck down before igniting the flame of justice and of law, is almost more than the heart can bear. And yet, this observation is not intended to burden you, for you are of a different time, and, indeed, because of all the relay runners before you, North America is a different place. It is really only to say: Well done. We knew, through all the generations, that you were with us, in us, the best of the spirit of Africa and of the Americas. Knowing this, that you would actually appear, someday, was part of our strength. Seeing you take your rightful place, based solely on your wisdom, stamina and character, is a balm for the weary warriors of hope, previously only sung about.

I would advise you to remember that you did not create the disaster that the world is experiencing, and you alone are not responsible for bringing the world back to balance. A primary responsibility that you do have, however, is to cultivate happiness in your own life. To make a schedule that permits sufficient time of rest and play with your gorgeous wife and lovely daughters. And so on. One gathers that your family is large. We are used to seeing men in the White House soon become juiceless and as white-haired as the building; we notice their wives and children looking strained and stressed. They soon have smiles so lacking in joy that they remind us of scissors. This is no way to lead. Nor does your family deserve this fate. One way of thinking about all this is: It is so bad now that there is no excuse not to relax. From your happy, relaxed state, you can model real success, which is all that so many people in the world really want. They may buy endless cars and houses and furs and gobble up all the attention and space they can manage, or barely manage, but this is because it is not yet clear to them that success is truly an inside job. That it is within the reach of almost everyone.

I would further advise you not to take on other people’s enemies. Most damage that others do to us is out of fear, humiliation and pain. Those feelings occur in all of us, not just in those of us who profess a certain religious or racial devotion. We must learn actually not to have enemies, but only confused adversaries who are ourselves in disguise. It is understood by all that you are commander in chief of the United States and are sworn to protect our beloved country; this we understand, completely. However, as my mother used to say, quoting a Bible with which I often fought, “hate the sin, but love the sinner.” There must be no more crushing of whole communities, no more torture, no more dehumanizing as a means of ruling a people’s spirit. This has already happened to people of color, poor people, women, children. We see where this leads, where it has led.

A good model of how to “work with the enemy” internally is presented by the Dalai Lama, in his endless caretaking of his soul as he confronts the Chinese government that invaded Tibet. Because, finally, it is the soul that must be preserved, if one is to remain a credible leader. All else might be lost; but when the soul dies, the connection to earth, to peoples, to animals, to rivers, to mountain ranges, purple and majestic, also dies. And your smile, with which we watch you do gracious battle with unjust characterizations, distortions and lies, is that expression of healthy self-worth, spirit and soul, that, kept happy and free and relaxed, can find an answering smile in all of us, lighting our way, and brightening the world.

We are the ones we have been waiting for.

In Peace and Joy,

Alice Walker

Well?

I’m waiting….

:)

michelle

From Around The World…

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 6th November 2008

I took a few minutes this morning just perusing the news…well actually I have been cruising the internet for over an hour now.  What held my interest the most was the amount of photos I saw from all over the world of people supporting and routing for Obama.  It was simply amazing to me.

It has been pretty obvious on my blog that all eyes have been on America these past months but seeing takes it to a whole other level. I believe this election was just as important to the rest of the world as it was here for us in the states.  People from all over the world were flying our flag, supporting Obama banners, waving Obama /Biden signs, and wearing buttons graced with Obama’s face, all with smiles on their own faces. I tried finding photos of people routing for McCain overseas. I’m sure that there were some out there, but I couldn’t find any; not one.

Unfortunately the night of the election we were all so busy screaming with our eyes glued to the television that not one of us remembered to document the event. So, I am posting a few of my favorite photos that I found…from around the world. Enjoy.

Yanni: I meant to address you yesterday but I forgot. I just want to be clear in regards to your comment the other day. If you have ordered a T-shirt and your money has been accepted yet you have not received your T-shirt, please inform CafePress. They handle all of my transactions. I do not personally handle any of the money or the product. To date I do not have any orders, so please inform me and cafePress if your money has been collected and you have never receive your T-shirt, if this happens to be the case.  I apologize for any inconvenience and corruption that has possibly occurred. Please clarify if this is the case. Thanks.

Anonz:  I understand where you are coming from; my gut instinct told me this was going to happen.  I am sure that you are aware that without Madaline’s protection, you are really putting yourself at risk. However,  I can not deny you your wish.  If you should change your mind, please contact me here, otherwise the moment you step foot onto Darfur soil, your protection will be removed. I hope that you are able to fulfill your promise peacefully and safely.

Madaline:  I will contact you through our normal channels.

In regards to Anonz: The moment he steps foot onto Darfur soil, remove his protection. You have your orders. 21MRB

Zen Lill: You know this is not my desire – I wish it didn’t have to be this way either.

Signing off…

Change Is Here

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 5th November 2008

I woke up yesterday morning feeling an excitement in my gut, like it was Christmas. And I went to bed last night feeling like I was given the best present one could hope for in this day. And without sounding too melodramatic, because I could easily go there, that present was the gift of hope for our future and the future of this planet.

In spite of the issues at the polls from malfunctioning machines, to running out of ballots, voter suppression, and all of the corruption in between, the American people came together in unprecedented numbers and spoke loudly.  I am so grateful that we finally woke up and took serious actions in deciding how we wanted our future to be.

And thanks to Madaline, our words were heard and our check-marks, slashes, and punches marking Obama as the desired president were seen and correctly counted. And thanks to Madaline we all went to bed last night with victorious smiles spread across our faces…Change is Here.

Maddie:  I have no idea how you pulled it all off; I look forward to reading the AAR’s someday soon. But words can not express how grateful I am that you did. Through your exemplary efforts we got a huge landslide and coattails. As I said I had no doubt in you whatsoever or in your abilities. And I couldn’t be more delighted over the results.

As much as I loved your quote from the other day, I wanted to post it again with a slight change:

‘Take heart that the day has not yet come when a man can defeat the determined will of a GirlZ.’

I too say it with the firm belief that a GirlZ always gets the job done. Thank you.

Anonz: I can not leave you out of this equation. As I mentioned the other day, I don’t believe in coincidences; I believe that things happen for a reason. Just as I believe that you stumbled onto my blog for a reason. And that your profound experience with Nia has transformed you in ways that only you are aware of, leading you to do and say things that you most likely would not have done or said before. I am grateful to that little girl.

And although you may not have believed in Madaline’s abilities, the information that you confessed only fueled the fire inside of me, and without it…well let’s just say, ‘knowledge is powerful.’ And in this case, ‘more powerful than any amount of money.’ Thank you.  And, I will heed your suggestion.

Hi Guam: Thanks for the stats – I could not find the info yesterday morning. It looks like Guam was once again right on!

Mary, Connie and Carl:  Thanks for posting your issues at the polls – I am sure your experiences were just a few of many.

Dori, Mindy Shawn, and Lori: Thank you for the congrats – It has been a long and rewarding road to victory.

Doug and Zen Lill: Wow. Trippy huh? Thanks for your love and kind words.  So…What’s next? :)

Hello Readers:  Thank you for going out there and voting! – I know most of you are so thrilled over the results.  It is a time of celebration but it is also a time to continue to work hard.  President Obama ( I just love saying that!)  has his work cut out for him, but so do we.  This is just the beginning and I so look forward to the changes knowing that we have stepped up and are a force to be reckoned with.

Okay..I just have to add…being the fashion maven that I am…Didn’t ya just love how the Obama’s looked all dressed up in black and red? Yep, they wore red and took the red states! And Michelle looked stunning – so not the typical ‘first lady’ dress!

Comments? I’d love to hear about your celebratory evening – blog me.

Peace out…

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle

VOTE TODAY!

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 4th November 2008

Click here to Volunteer for Obama!

And, if you can take the day off be one of the many volunteers and make a difference. Click above and get involved.  Doug and I are volunteering today to swing the battleground states.  It is an historical moment – why not be a part of it?  And If you can’t, then at least go out and vote and get your friends and family to vote too!

Don’t be one of these!

Make sure that you know your vote counted!  I believe that I have posted everything that you need in order to make your vote count. If you are questioning anything go to yesterday’s post “Wednesday is ‘not’ a voting day” or “Early Voting? Make sure that you have Election Protection”  for tips at the polls.  Really…there is not much more to say but: Good luck everyone and think…

“President Obama!”

PS: And if you live in California, Please vote Yes on prop 2! for the animals and, No on Prop 8! for equal rights. Thank you!

Hey Cuba:  I agree! I haven’t been this excited ever over an election. I have enjoyed being in the mix of it and I am so looking forward to today and celebrating tonight.

Hi Konduz:  Isn’t that what it is all about? The freedom to say what is on our mind…to be able to debate with others and have intelligent conversation.  How we can sometimes take it for granted because we can not imagine what it would be like to not have that freedom. It is women like you who remind us how lucky we women are to be born in the US. I hope for freedom for all.

Interesting stat Guam – thanks for the tip!

Hi Gleia:  Wow. Hmmm…I’m curious…they shot through a wormhole and in order to get back out through the web, they need another one to exit…surely their presence must be known by you-know-who – Yes? So..what else can we expect from their presence besides more earthquakes and such? Has competition over earthly enjoyments entered the picture? Please share.

Hello Yanni: I realize that this blog has been very focused on the election, but you gotta admit it has been pretty damn exciting. However, politics will not be the focus from now on but it will have a presence no doubt.

As far as my legs – where have ya been? – I’v already shown them. :) In regards to the t-shirts – so sorry. I would love to be able to assist – maybe when the powers that be make a change over I’ll be able to sell something. Until then….

Maddie: I wish you an easy and effortless day in accomplishing your orders.

Hey ZL:  It has been awhile…how are you?

Doug: Are ya ready? Let’s go!

Readers:  Comments? Stories to share about your experience at the polls? You know what to do – blog me.

Have a beautiful day everyone!

12:47 PM: Just checking in. Hey everyone, I’ve been reading your comments so far…Let’s help Madaline -If you are experiencing major issues at the polls and people are having problems voting or feel that their ballot is being tossed, blog it here and make sure you list where you are located – Thanks!
