The NRA’s Getting What It Paid For

The NRA is a big spender when it comes to lobbying and campaigns. ThinkProgress investigated the NRA’s contributions to Members of Congress and — lo and behold — the most heavily NRA-backed congressman are leading the charge against new gun violence prevention measures. Here’s Josh Israel with the details:

1. REP. DON YOUNG (R-AK) — AT LEAST $107,425

 

 

 

2. REP. STEVE CHABOT (R-OH) — AT LEAST $65,950Young said last month, “I have serious concerns with the statements made today by President Obama and take issue with the President’s call for banning aesthetically altered rifles and shotguns and certain magazines. This is a dangerous limitation on a family’s ability to defend itself in the event they’re threatened. Perhaps in cities where the police response time tends to be more rapid, it is easy to forget how important a firearm is to keeping loved ones safe. However, in rural America where law enforcement is many miles away, a semi-automatic weapon could mean the difference between life and death.”

Chabot said last month, “I have serious concerns regarding many of the president’s gun control proposals. Further, I am disturbed the White House bypassed the American peoples’ elected representatives in Congress and implemented much of their agenda by executive order.”

3. REP. PETE SESSIONS (R-TX) — AT LEAST $64,000

Sessions said last month, “Going forward, I will continue to tirelessly defend Americans’ right to bear arms as guaranteed by the Second Amendment. In doing so, I will fight against the President’s unrelenting attempts to bypass Congress and further erode our Constitution.”

4. REP. LEE TERRY (R-NE) — AT LEAST $59,650

Terry said in a January radio interview, “We’ve seen several assaults on the constitution. This is just another one.” He said President Obama’s efforts are “unconstitutional,” adding “These aren’t going to curb the real issue. The real issue is someone with mental health issues gets a gun… these aren’t going to solve that problem… How many bullets you have in a magazine ultimately doesn’t solve any problem.”

5. REP. BOB GOODLATTE (R-VA) — AT LEAST $57,250

Goodlatte, who chairs the House Committee on the Judiciary, told CQ Roll Call in December that he does not favor tightening controls on firearms. “We’re going to take a look at what happened there and what can be done to help avoid it in the future, but gun control is not going to be something that I would support,” he said. Any gun violence prevention measures would likely require Judiciary Committee approval.

6. REP. JOE BARTON (R-TX) — AT LEAST $57,248

Barton said last month, “The Obama Administration’s plan amounts to a power grab. I will fight any legislation that further restricts qualified owners’ access to guns. I am also against the President using executive orders to circumvent the will of the people and infringe on the constitutional rights of my constituents. The right to bear arms is guaranteed by the Second Amendment, and when I took my oath of office I swore to defend the Constitution. I believe that violent crime must be reduced, but I will not support measures that infringe upon the rights of law-abiding citizens.”

7. REP. HAL ROGERS (R-KY) — AT LEAST $51,725

Rogers has apparently said little publicly since Sandy Hook, but didsay in December, “As we search for understanding and gain minute-by-minute explanations of how an unfathomable tragedy of this magnitude occurred, we must be judicious in our response.”

8. REP. TOM LATHAM (R-IA) — AT LEAST $49,750

Latham said last month, “while I always support having a vigorous and thorough debate on the important issues facing our nation, I continue to believe that we must ensure any Congressional or executive action pertaining to firearm regulations should not erode the rights we are guaranteed in our Constitution.“

9. REP. KEN CALVERT (R-CA) — AT LEAST $48,400

Calvert has reportedly refused to even discuss gun violence prevention until a full investigation of the Newtown shootings is completed.

10. REP. JOHN BOEHNER (R-OH) — AT LEAST $47,800

Boehner, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has dismissed calls for quick House action on gun violence. “When the vice president’s recommendations come forward, we’ll certainly take them into consideration,” he said in December, “but at this point I think our hearts and souls ought to be to think about those victims in this horrible tragedy.”

After receiving more than $600,000 total over the years from the organization, expect these ten Republicans to be among the fiercest opponents of even the most commonsense measures to prevent future tragedy.

On January 20, 1961, President John F. Kennedy was sworn in as the 35th president, and uttered the most notable inaugural line in history. “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” In under 14 minutes, President Kennedy delivered a moving speech that left a lasting impact on every American, including MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell.

After taking the oath of office at Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., Kennedy told the country that day, “We shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and success of liberty.”

In honor of Presidents Day, Harvard University tweeted a link to a new version of Kennedy’s inaugural address–a video released two years ago celebrating the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s legacy. Titled “Let the Word Go Forth,” the video, produced by the Harvard Kennedy School, commemorates the Kennedy presidency and recreates his inaugural address featuring many familiar faces and voices.

Good morning!

Happy President’s Day!  I can’t say I ever recognized this day much in the past, except that it was a day off and the banks etc., were closed. Nothing against President Lincoln, or President Washington, whom this day was honoring most significantly. But until President Obama became president, I didn’t think much about honoring our past presidents. So…here’s to you…in honor of you, President Obama.

New GOP = Old GOP

It’s The Policies, Stupid

In the wake of a blowout at the polls (save for in their gerrymandered U.S. House seats) last November, Republican leaders have engaged in much soul-searching about the failings of their party. They seem to have reached an interesting conclusion: their party’s deep unpopularity has absolutely nothing to do with their party’s deeply unpopular policies such as calling for more tax cuts for the wealthy and gutting popular programs like Medicare.

Republicans have instead decided that they just need better messaging about their policies. To that end, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R) gave just the latest in a series of speeches attempting to “rebrand” the GOP. ThinkProgress’ Igor Volsky and Pat Garafalo listened to today’s speech so you don’t have to. Unsurprisingly, they found that the new, “softer” GOP is more or less the same as the old GOP. Here’s eight reasons why:

1) SCHOOL FUNDING: “Imagine if we were to try and move in this direction with federal funding. Allow the money we currently spend to actually follow individual children. Students, including those without a lot of money or those with special needs, would be able to access the best available school, not just the failing school they are assigned to.” This is a redux of Mitt Romney’s school funding plan, which while a decent idea in theory, wouldn’t be possible alongside the House GOP budget’s call for $2.7 billion in cutsto spending for disadvantaged students. As The Nation’s Dana Goldstein explained, this plan calls for shuffling funding “without guaranteeing the federal funding or regulatory support necessary to ensure quality.”

2) HIGHER EDUCATION: “Over the course of this Congress, we will also work to reform our student aid process to give students a financial incentive to finish their studies sooner. We will encourage entrepreneurship in higher education, including for-profit schools.” The House Republican budget would eliminate Pell Grants for more than one million students. Many for-profit schools, meanwhile, take huge amounts of taxpayer money while leaving students burdened with debt and facing bleak job prospects. Their focus is corporate profitability, not education, and they useaggressive marketing tactics to target vulnerable students.

3) WORKING MOTHERS: “Federal laws dating back to the 1930s make it harder for parents who hold hourly jobs to balance the demands of work and home. An hourly employee cannot convert previous overtime into future comp-time or flex-time…Imagine if we simply chose to give all employees and employers this option. A working mom could work overtime this month and use it as time off next month without having to worry about whether she’ll be able to take home enough money to pay the rent.” Cantor’s proposal would do far less good than simply ensuring that all workers have access to paid sick leave and paid maternity leave. The U.S. is currently the only developed country with no paid sick leave policy and one of just threewithout required paid maternity leave.

4) TAX REFORM: “Loopholes and gimmicks benefitting those who’ve come to know how to work the system in Washington, are no more defensible than the path of wasteful and irresponsible spending we’ve been on for decades. Working families should come first. Everyone agrees a fairer, simpler tax code would give us all more time.” Republicans pay lots of lip service to tax reform, but want to raise no new revenues through the closing of loopholes and deductions, despite the fact that the deficit reduction implemented since 2011 has comeoverwhelmingly via spending cuts.

5) IMMIGRATION: “It is time to provide an opportunity for legal residence and citizenship for those who were brought to this country as children and who know no other home…. I’m pleased that many of my colleagues in both chambers of Congress on both sides of the aisle have begun work in good faith to address these issues.” Republicans have embraced immigration reform after losing the Hispanic vote in the 2012 election. In 2010, Cantor and 160 other Republicans voted against the DREAM Act, a measure that “would offer a pathway to citizenship for undocumented young people who attend college or serve in the military.”

6) OBAMACARE: “The new medical device tax in ObamaCare makes it harder for researchers to develop these innovative devices in the U.S….ObamaCare has unnecessarily raised the costs of our health care. “ A tax on the medical devise industry — which will benefit from health care reform — will help fund coverage expansion, without undermining innovation. As the Center For Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) points out the tax “does not apply to eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, or any other medical device that the public generally buys at retail for individual use.” It would also have minimal impact on innovation since “tax rate is just one of the many factors affecting financial incentives.” The Affordable Care Act has had a very small effect on current premiums.

7) MEDICARE: “We should begin by ending the arbitrary division between Part A, the hospital program, and Part B, the doctor services. We can create reasonable and predictable levels of out-of-pocket expenses without forcing seniors to rely on Medigap plans…. “ President Obama has included many of these efficiency reforms in his budgets — but the GOP’s proposal move far beyond increasing program efficiency. Cantor and almost all Republicans support transforming Medicare into a voucher or premium-support program that will shift health costs to seniors without reducing overall health care spending.

8) MEDICAID: “We can provide states more flexibility with respect to Medicaid that will allow them to provide better care for low-income families in a way that ultimately lowers costs….And we must make it faster and simpler for states to gain approval of federal waivers to modify their Medicaid programs.” Democrats support increasing state flexibility in the Medicaid program, though Republicans — and Cantor himself — have voted to slash federal funding for Medicaid by 1/3 and shift some of the burden of Medicaid’s growing costs to the states. As a result, states could reduce enrollment by more than 14 million people, or almost 20 percent—even if they are were able to slow the growth in health care costs substantially.

BOTTOM LINE: The GOP’s problem isn’t bad branding, it’s bad policies. If Republicans really want to be more popular, they should stop pushing policies that are opposed by the vast majority of the American people.

You brought up the issue with the postal service awhile ago. I love my post office and the people that work there. I still enjoy sending (and receiving!) personal cards in the mail. I still look forward to getting my mail. Call me old fashioned…call me romantic, but I still love and appreciate the written letter.

I enjoy taking my letter opener, sliding it in the corner and gently cutting the paper revealing the contents. (Okay sometimes maybe not so gently:) I even enjoy opening my bills and writing the checks. I know, most of you are probably paying on line, with no check book in site. Not me. But hey, to each her own.

I am tactile and visual, so I still appreciate interesting paper, beautiful cards, and fun stamps –  the entire handwriting experience, whether it be signing a check or writing a “Thank you” card, is something I still enjoy doing.

So when I think what is happening to our postal service, it saddens me. When I think of what the republicans are doing it maddens me.

Thanks To Congressional Incompetence, Saturday Mail Delivery Is History

The U.S. Postal Service announced on Wednesday that it will discontinue first class Saturday mail delivery, marking another milestone in the decline of the once-ubiquitous government service. But it isn’t a switch to online mail that’s causing the postal demise — it’sCongress.

Under the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, Congress has for years forced the USPS to pre-fund 75 years’ worth of pensions for its employees, a requirement not made of any other public or private institution. That means that the Postal Service is footing the bill for employees it hasn’t even hired yet.

The USPS doesn’t actually receive money from the government, but still needs Congressional approval to make any changes to its structure. An analysis in July showed that the USPS, without its pension requirement, would have a $1.5 billion surplus.

But Congress has repeatedly failed to address the issue. Last year, the Postal Service defaulted on a pension fund payment for the first — and then second — time in its history, and political infighting stopped Congress from bringing any remedy to the floor.

Postal access is, ultimately, a rights issue for rural Americans; since they live in areas where internet coverage is inconsistent, post office closures and slowed-down delivery can mean big limitations on communication. A lack of access to postal services can lead to a growth in economic inequality. The new rules for Saturday delivery, set to take effect on August 1, 2013, will continue delivery of packages, but discontinue basic first-class mail.
