For The Love of Love, And Living In The Present Moment

Good morning!

I’m keeping it short and sweet this morning. There were many wonderful moments from yesterday. Two that I want to share that really touched me.

This is one…

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Call me a sucker for romance, one who enjoyes PDA (Public Display of Affection), a champion for love...I am all of the above and more when it comes to love. And yes, I’ll admit at this time in my life I am missing that sharing of my life with someone that I care deeply about who feels the same same for me. So, when I see two people who are so obviously in love, it brings tears to my eyes, warms my heart and shows me once again that a love like that is possible.

And doesn’t Michelle Obama look simply stunning with her new stylish bangs, donning her Jason Wu dress and Jimmy Choo’s! President Obama isn’t bad on the eyes either. :)

And this is the other one…

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Talk about being present and in the moment. I watched with joy as I saw President Obama turn around and take a moment – just for himself. To see him take it all in…taking a moment to take one more look.

This moment brought tears to my eyes too because we all have moments like this that we don’t want to forget…moments where we’ve done something amazing or are recognized for something incredible that we’ve accomplished…or simply just taking a look knowing that you will never be in that exact position again, and the importance of where you are now.

And like the challenging times that we struggle to get through – we want the moment to pass, these moments of grandness we want to capture and grasp for just a moment more…because as in both moments we must also acknowledge that “this too will pass.”

Readers: What were some of your fave moments from yesterday’s Presidential Inauguration? Blog me.

I just want to end with “Welcome back Al!”  I’ll check in with the rest of you tomorrow.

Peace & Love…

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. Obama Calls For Inclusiveness During Our Work In Progress

Good morning!

Okay, so I slept late because I was super tired from the busy weekend. And then waking up this morning, I was so hooked into the news watching president Obama’s inauguration that I just didn’t, and still don’t want to break away to post.  Hence, I am going to be very brief.

So many good things about the inauguration going through my mind, from Civil Rights icon Myrlie Evers-Williams who delivered the inaugural invocation, to the inspiring music and poetry, to the encouraging, inclusive speech of our beloved president Obama on this day, celebrating his second inauguration, and honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

Congratulations Mr. President! I couldn’t be more proud.

Commander-In-Chic

Good morning!

When I meet with a client for the first time I always ask them if they have any style icons. Brought up more often than others, Barack and Michelle Obama are mentioned. It always brings a smile to my face because I think they both have killer style.  They both exude feeling so good and comfortable in their skin. And together they are a stunning couple. Here’s one of my faves:

But looks aren’t everything, and Michelle Obama as we all know has so much more to offer than just eye candy. She is truly an iconic FLOTUS in so many ways. Her strength, and character, intelligence, and warm sensibilities continually shines and graces us.

I was perusing the Huff Po front page and decided check in on the Women’s section. And there I discovered today is the First Lady’s 49th birthday. Perfect. I was questioning what I wanted to blog today, and when I clicked over to the women’s section, there was my answer.

Michelle Obama’s Birthday: FLOTUS Turns 49, A Look Back At Her Pre-White House Style (PHOTOS)

Happy 49th Birthday, Michelle Obama!

It goes without saying that we’re huge fans of Michelle Obama around these parts. What’s not to love? She super smart, a great mom, loving wife and can dress her tush off. (And let’s not forget she knows how to Dougie)

We’ve followed her every fashionable move over the past four years and we’re thrilled for the opportunity to do it again as she embarks on her next term as Commander-in-Chic.

But let’s take a moment to look back at Michelle’s path to stealing our hearts and rise to style icon. Being the social media savvy folks that we are, it only seemed right to dedicate a #TBT (aka Throwback Thursday) post to our lovely FLOTUS.

So, in celebration of Michelle’s 49th birthday, we’ve handpicked our favorite images from before she stepped foot in the White House–further proof that she definitely had the style, grace and so much more to be our First Lady. Enjoy!

********

Ugh…I can’t seem to post the video. Click on the title if you would like to see it as well as a slideshow of Michelle Obama’s fashion over the years.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICHELLE OBAMA!!

Readers: I just had to borrow that term “Commander-in-Chic” for my blog title from the author. Love it. And for you fashionistas, if you didn’t click over to the write, I suggest you do. The author Mikki Taylor taps a great write, and in my opinion as a stylist, nails it on Michelle Obama’s style, as well as her great style tips. Kudos to Taylor.

Howie, Zen Lill: Seeing only just the both of you in the comments section makes me feel a bit nostalgic – like the old days when I first started blogging. :) Howie, thanks for continuing the chronicles of FDR (fascinating), and for your two.

Blog me.

Executive Action On Gun Control

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 16th January 2013

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

From the NRA’s commercial  asking you if Obama’s children are more important than yours, implying that they are if you don’t put armed security in your schools, to repub Steve Stockman and others threatening to try and impeach Obama over gun control, to thoughts of  an executive order on gun control sparking a “civil war,” with one gun lover, Buck Yeager touting that he will kill anyone who tries to take away his guns.

Gun control is obviously one of the hot topics, and the crazies are out speaking loud and proud their thoughts on gun control. Thankfully we do have a few sane people talking common sense. Governor Cuomo of NY made a move in the right direction and just passed the toughest gun law in the nation, and…Obama is proposing to take executive action on gun control.

I watched Obama speak this morning – did you see? If not, here’s the write – Obama being bold:

Obama Gun Control Proposals Unveiled, Marking Biggest Legislative Effort In A Generation

WASHINGTON — In a bold and potentially historic attempt to stem the increase in mass gun violence, President Barack Obama unveiled on Wednesday the most sweeping effort at gun control policy reform in a generation.

The proposal, which comes at the end of a month-long review process spearheaded by Vice President Joe Biden, is broken down into four key subsections: law enforcement, the availability of dangerous firearms and ammunition, school safety and mental health.

In an effort to touch on all four of those elements, the president recommended requiring criminal background checks for all gun sales; reinstating the assault weapons ban; restoring a 10-round limit on ammunition magazines; eliminating armor-piercing bullets; providing mental health services in schools; allocating funds to hire more police officers; and instituting a federal gun trafficking statute, among other policies. The cost of the package, senior officials estimated, would be roughly $500 million, some of which could come from already budgeted funds.

Because these recommendations require congressional approval, the administration is supplementing its proposal with 23 executive actions that will be taken immediately, according to the White House. Those actions include requiring federal agencies to hand over relevant data for a background check system; providing law enforcement officials, first responders and school officials with better training for active shooting situations; directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence; and many more.

“I intend to use whatever weight this office holds to make them a reality,” said the president, speaking about his full set of recommendations. “If there’s even one life that can be saved, then we’ve got an obligation to try.”

The approach is so sweeping that what would have otherwise been a headline-grabbing announcement received second billing. The president on Wednesday will nominate Byron Todd Jones, the acting director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, to take over the post permanently.

In total, the proposal goes beyond what most gun control advocates were hoping for at the start of Biden’s review process, during which he held 22 different meetings with 229 different organizations and 31 elected officials.

“This is a monumental moment. It’s a long time coming and we’re thrilled the president’s putting the full weight of his office behind this,” said Josh Horowitz, executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. “We’re ready to push this thing through.”

But putting together ideas is the easy part. Selling them on the Hill will take a bit of legislative craft.

Seasoned political observers have questioned whether it makes more sense to break the package into separate bills or push for one comprehensive proposal. A senior administration official said that the president’s proposal shouldn’t be considered finalized legislative language, but rather a series of recommendations for Congress to consider. The president would be working with lawmakers to move the process forward, the official added, and would be trying to build up public opinion as well.

“I will put everything I’ve got into this and so will Joe [Biden]. But I tell you, the only way we can change is if the American people demand it,” said Obama. “We are going to need voices in those areas and congressional districts where the tradition of gun ownership is strong.”

“It can’t just be the usual suspects,” he continued. “This will not happen unless the American people demand it.”

The gun-rights lobby has already signaled that it will try to block the administration’s effort. A spokesman for the National Rifle Association did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the president’s proposal. But the organization has already harshly criticized the Obama administration for overreach.

“It is unfortunate that this administration continues to insist on pushing failed solutions to our nation’s most pressing problems,” the NRA said after meeting with Biden last week. “We will not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen.”

The group continued its offensive this week, launching an advertising campaignattacking Obama as an “elitist hypocrite” for opposing the NRA’s widely-criticized proposal, made after the Newtown, Conn. shooting, to place armed guards in all of the nation’s schools.

But that attack appeared a bit premature. As part of its policy recommendations, the White House called on Congress to act on an old administration proposal to spend $4 billion to keep 15,000 cops on the streets. In addition, the president is calling for a new initiative that would incentivize police departments to hire more school resource officers and encourage schools to hire more mental health professionals. The president’s plan also calls on Congress to allocate resources to help schools, other educational institutions and houses of worship develop emergency management plans.

The White House proposals, even officials there admit, is not a panacea for mass shootings. Among the suggested recommendations on the gun-policy front, only the ban on high-capacity magazines could have had a tangible impact on the Sandy Hook shooting. And it’s unclear just how much of an impact that would have had.

Moreover, the administration is pointedly not going after those weapons and ammunition clips that are currently and lawfully owned. The proposal would instead affect the future production and sale of military-style weapons or high-capacity magazines.

“We are not going to go after existing stock of weapons or magazines,” said a senior administration official. “We are going to limit it to the manufacturing of assault weapons and clips going forward.”

The White House, nevertheless, insists that its package of proposals has teeth. It would provide law enforcement with the mechanisms needed to go after the illegal transfer of weapons, administration officials stress, and it would help prevent those weapons from falling into the wrong hands. It would stem the use of military-style weapons — the White House says its proposal would improve on the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, which was riddled with loopholes — and give resources to schools and communities to deal better with violence when it occurs.

The question, in some respects, is not what’s missing from the set of ideas, but what took the administration so long to get to this point.

“It is not as though we had this whole policy paper sitting on the shelf somewhere,” said a senior administration official. “[We worked] 24/7 for the past month. And we met with a lot of groups and we learned a lot of ideas that came as a result of this process. We tried to be as comprehensive as possible. We are hoping that as the process goes on and as the debate goes on, we might come up with some other ideas.”

******

Obama’s ready to move forward. He’s putting everything he’s got into this – Are you? He’s asking for us to demand change. Make your voice heard. Speak to your peeps in your state.

Thoughts? Blog me.

Mattie: I found a smile on my face too when I read your story. I bet you owe your mother on that one big time. I just HOPE she doesn’t enter your mind every time your partner enters you though. :)

Let me be clear if I wasn’t before. I have no judgment on anyone doing whatever they want to their vaginas to make themselves feel better emotionally, physically or for better health. What I do have a problem with is when someone defines how a vagina should look, or what makes a vagina “attractive,” and then encourages women to “fix” theirs convincing them that their partner will then be more attracted to them.

Susan: Bravo.

Zen Lill: I remember when I blogged a few years back about bleaching your butt hole – not your butt hole of course – That was too funny. I HOPE miss Lily had a wonderful Birthday yesterday. What did you two do to celebrate?

Howie: We all know the downside of being in the hospital, so thankfully you are Home Sweet Home.  I HOPE that you are feeling better.

That was quite the chronicle and certainly nothing close to what our history reports. I understand Quu’s viewpoint. And I’m not sure our beloved Earth will ever be a member of the Galactic Club if humans keep behaving as they do. What are your personal thoughts about our current and future positions? I look forward to the rest. Be well, Howie.

Peace out.

Will Common Sense Prevail Or Will The Republicans Turn Into Deadbeats?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 15th January 2013

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

And that question is being somewhat “nice.” Because this isn’t about “common sense” or “doing the right thing.” We already know even if it is common sense (which by the way isn’t very common these days) to “pay the bills”, the repubs don’t “do the right thing.” I should ask, “Will racism and the need to have Obama fail at any expense including the expense of our country subside, or will the repubs turn into deadbeats and completely crash the American Economy?

I’ve been avoiding talk about the debt ceiling…avoiding reading about it and avoiding blogging it here. But last night I just felt I needed to lend my ear and listen to what’s been in the news.

In case you missed Obama speaking about the debt ceiling yesterday, I myself just watched it last night, I am posting it today. What I like about Obama is that he speaks in layman’s terms so that the average person can understand exactly what is going on.  Many think that raising the dept ceiling means that we take on more debt. It does not. So, let me repeat what Obama said just to be clear: “Raising the debt ceiling does not authorize more spending. It simply allows the country to pay for spending that Congress has already committed to.”

Here’s Obama’s almost 1-hour talk on the debt ceiling, gun control, etc. – I believe it is well worth listening to.

I also pulled this from Maddow’s blogIt highlights some of the most important parts of this debt ceiling talk.

‘We are not a deadbeat nation’

President Obama held another White House press conference this morning, and fielded seven reporters’ questions — four of them about the debt ceiling.

By the time the president was making his case for the fourth time, the responses started getting a little repetitious, but Obama’s line didn’t change: we’ve already made enormous progress on debt reduction, he’s willing to do more, but a hostage strategy based on the debt ceiling isn’t acceptable.

In fact, the president spent a fair amount of time trying to explain to the public what some reporters occasionally overlook:

“The debt ceiling is not a question of authorizing more spending. Raising the debt ceiling does not authorize more spending. It simply allows the country to pay for spending that Congress has already committed to.

“These are bills that have already been racked up, and we need to pay them. So while I’m willing to compromise and find common ground over how to reduce our deficits, America cannot afford another debate with this Congress about whether or not they should pay the bills they’ve already racked up. [...]

“So to even entertain the idea of this happening, of the United States of America not paying its bills, is irresponsible. It’s absurd…. And Republicans in Congress have two choices here: They can act responsibly and pay America’s bills or they can act irresponsibly and put America through another economic crisis. But they will not collect a ransom in exchange for not crashing the American economy. The financial well-being of the American people is not leverage to be used. The full faith and credit of the United States of America is not a bargaining chip.”

It doesn’t sound like he’s ready to cave. On the contrary, it sounds like the president is issuing a not-so-subtle challenge to congressional Republicans: do your duty or we’ll all suffer the consequences.

The president went on to say:

“[T]he issue here is whether or not America pays its bills. We are not a deadbeat nation. And so there’s a very simple solution to this. Congress authorizes us to pay our bills.

“Now if the House and the Senate want to give me the authority so that they don’t have to take these tough votes, if they want to put the responsibility on me to raise the debt ceiling, I’m happy to take it. Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, had a proposal like that last year, and I’m happy to accept it.

“But if they want to keep this responsibility, then they need to go ahead and get it done. And you know, there are no magic tricks here. There are no loopholes. There are no, you know, easy outs. This is a matter of Congress authorizes spending. They order me to spend. They tell me: You need to fund our Defense Department at such-and-such a level. You need to send Social Security checks. You need to make sure that you are paying to care for our veterans.

“They lay all this out for me, and — because they have the spending power. And so I am required by law to go ahead and pay these bills.

“Separately, they also have to authorize a raising of the debt ceiling in order to make sure that those bills are paid. And so what Congress can’t do is tell me to spend X and then say, but we’re not going to give you the authority to go ahead and pay the bills.”

Obama added that he’s ready to negotiate on debt reduction, and he’s even open to entitlement changes, but he doesn’t intend to reward Congress for doing what it must do anyway.

What’s more, of particular interest was the president highlighting Republicans’ philosophical goals, which have less to do with debt reduction, and more to do with undermining public institutions.

“[I]t seems as if what’s motivating and propelling at this point some of the House Republicans is more than simply deficit reduction. They have a particular vision about what government should and should not do. So they are suspicious about government’s commitments, for example, to make sure that seniors have decent health care as they get older. They have suspicions about Social Security. They have suspicions about whether government should make sure that kids in poverty are getting enough to eat or whether we should be spending money on medical research. So they’ve got a particular view of what government should do and should be.

“And that view was rejected by the American people when it was debated during the presidential campaign. I think every poll that’s out there indicates that the American people actually think our commitment to Medicare or to education is really important, and that’s something that we should look at as a last resort in terms of reducing the deficit, and it makes a lot more sense for us to close, for example, corporate loopholes before we go to putting a bigger burden on students or seniors.”

I’m glad Obama reminded the political world of this basic truth; I get the sense folks sometimes forget what the driving motivations are behind many of our ongoing partisan fights.

Readers: How many times does the same same question need to be asked?  To me, it’s very simple. The answer to all these questions is the same same – Look, either Congress pays its bills or not. How many times does Obama need to say it? Will the republicans be responsible and pay the bills or will they hold the American people hostage and screw with our economy big time – Not to mention the profound affect it will have on the world economy?

So…who’s really to blame?” We all know who the “who” is. I love the way Obama simply puts it that if the House republicans want to shut down the government to see if they can get their way, that is their right to do so – that is how the system is set up. Hey, the American people voted those republicans back into office back in 2010. The keys were handed over and they are in the driver’s seat. So…How’s that working out for you now? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
