And Over The Cliff We Go?

Good morning!

I’ve been reading about this “dreaded” fiscal cliff but have avoided blogging about it. Why bother until progress was made. But when you’re talking about the republicans, the term “progress” is not in their vocabulary. And until now the only thing that has happened is the continual talks that have and are seeming to go nowhere. It is the same same republican obstructionism – repubs care more about them and theirs than the country.

I found this link on Maddow’s blog, and found it worth the read so I’m posting it for all of you.

Chart Book: The Bush Tax Cuts

To provide context for the debate about addressing expiring tax provisions and reducing long-term deficits, we’ve collected some of our charts related to the Bush tax cuts, which show that the tax cuts (1) are costly, (2) have worsened inequality, and (3) should be allowed to expire on schedule for incomes over $250,000.

1. The Bush Tax Cuts Are Costly

Policymakers enacted the Bush tax cuts in 2001 and 2003 and extended them in 2010; they are set to expire at the end of 2012. As the first chart shows, the tax cuts have been a key driver of the federal deficit and will account for $4.5 trillion in deficits over the 2009-2019 period if extended.

Continuing the Bush tax cuts would add trillions more to deficits. As the second chart shows, the high-income tax cuts — those on incomes above $250,000 for a married couple filing jointly ($200,000 for singles) — are a big reason why. Allowing the high-income tax cuts to expire would reduce deficits by $950 billion (including the interest savings) over the next ten years.

These figures do not even include the estate tax cut, which benefits only the wealthiest 0.3 percent of estates and costs an additional $141 billion over ten years (including interest costs), according to the Office of Management and Budget.

2. The Bush Tax Cuts Have Worsened Inequality

As the third chart shows, the Bush tax cuts provide much larger benefits for high-income people than middle-income people.

The high-end tilt of the Bush tax cuts has contributed to the stunning increase in income inequality in recent decades, a trend shown in the fourth chart:

3. Policymakers Should Let the High-Income Tax Cuts Expire

High-income households can afford to contribute more to deficit reduction, and the tax code is the principal mechanism through which they can make that contribution.

Some claim that allowing the high-income Bush tax cuts to expire would slow economic growth and job creation. These arguments echo those made against President Clinton’s proposed 1993 tax increases, which set marginal rates at the levels to which they are set to return when the Bush rate cuts expire. As it turned out, however, job creation and economic growth proved significantly stronger following the 1993 tax increases than following the 2001 Bush tax cuts, as the fifth chart shows.

Further, small businesses created jobs at twice the rate during the Clinton years than they did under the Bush tax code, as the sixth chart shows.

Restoring the higher rates for high-income taxpayers would not inhibit economic growth. In fact, the economic evidence shows that if the alternative to raising taxes is larger deficits, modest tax increases on high-income households would likely be more beneficial for the economy over the long run.

Allowing the high-income Bush tax cuts to expire also makes economic sense in the short run.

Extending most expiring tax cuts other than the high-income tax cuts would boost gross domestic product (GDP) by a significant 1.3 percent next year, a new Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report finds. Extending the high-income tax cuts would do very little to support the recovery, boosting GDP by just 0.1 percent (see chart).

A key reason why the high-income tax cuts make poor stimulus is that the economy is suffering from excess unemployment and underutilized business capacity; the most effective way to support growth is to boost demand for goods and services. The high-income tax cuts do little of that. They benefit only about the top 2 percent of taxpayers, who (as the CBO report explains) likely spend less of each extra dollar of income they receive than low- and moderate-income taxpayers do.

Readers: Interesting huh? Kind of says it all. Gee, do you suppose the republicans are looking at these charts? Do they really care about country? Evidently not. Well…the talks will continue, and I suppose like our government, we will continue to talk about it too, until a decision is made, and then we can talk/bitch/rant about it some more.

Blog me.

On another note…I enjoyed reading all of your responses to the day before’s topic. And…to all of you “just asking,” I addressed the question in my write, but evidently it wasn’t enough.

So here it goes…”No, I am not having sex with my ex and no I am not thinking about having sex with my ex. One of the benefits of being with me is that you get to be with me, and all the other benefits that come along with being with this fine ass. Once the relationship is over, the benefits are gone, and all you get to do is look…and dream about it. :) Of course, one can try again to win my heart, but until then, these fine legs are closed. And yes Daniel, still ‘strutting my stuff’, and will continue to do so.” :)

HOPE that satisfies everyone’s curiosity.

Oh…I almost forgot…

Have a Happy New Year!!

Be safe tonight!

It’s the eve of the new year here but new years day in Guam – Anna, Peter, Lea, et al: Happy New Year! Hafa Adai! And to the rest of the world: Happy New Year to my International readers too!

PS: Excuse me for being out of it this morning/afternoon. I am so wrapped up in politics and this fiscal cliff,  the new year wishes have been pushed to second place.

Peace out.

Sunday Afternoon Post

Good morning!

In light of the subject two days ago, this is the other side of it, and since Rice is now unfortunately not the chosen one to be the new Secretary of State, (I’m still so disappointed about this)  just who will be nominated? I guess it is not a question since we all know “who” is Obama’s top choice on that short list.

I found this write and I have to say that I agree with the Dems concerns. The repubs are encouraging Obama to nominate Kerry for Secretary of State but their motives are not exactly without regard to their own self interests. When is it not ever just about their own self interests?

Oh no…they see this as an opportunity to regain a seat in the Senate that they lost this past election. If they can’t own the White House, and they’ve got control of the House, their next step is to have the majority in the Senate, and control that too.

Therefore, Kerry leaving the Senate is an open position for them to possibly gain. No doubt Obama is aware of this. So why is he nominating Kerry for the position? Your guess is as good as mine but let me say loud and clear just in case anybody cares: For the sake of the country because we will be risking losing a place in the Senate,  nothing against Kerry, but I think he should remain where he is, as a Senator of Massachusetts,  and in my opinion Obama should nominate someone else. I am not sure who else is on that short list but Kerry shouldn’t be on it, and he definitely shouldn’t be the nominee.

We’ve all worked so hard to get Obama’s administration where it is today, we cannot afford any repub ripple effect.

What are your thoughts? Here’s the write:

John Kerry To Get Secretary Of State Nomination, Reports ABC

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) will be nominated to succeed Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, sources tell ABC’s Jake Tapper.

The announcement will not come in the next few days, ABC reports, due to a number of circumstances.

Kerry topped President Barack Obama’s short list of candidates after U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice withdrew her name from consideration in light of fierce GOP opposition.

The Huffington Post’s Sam Stein and Joshua Hersh reported earlier this month that Democrats were nervous about the prospect of nominating Kerry:

The concerns have nothing to do with Kerry’s ability to handle the Foggy Bottom post. Nearly everyone agrees that he has the intellectual acumen and experience for the job.Instead, Democrats said they worry that Republicans may be using the secretary of state fight as a roundabout way to regain a Senate seat the GOP lost this fall, when Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) was defeated by Elizabeth Warren. The anti-Rice gambit, some Democrats said, has the feel of a Republican long con.

“I don’t doubt that at all in terms of their motives,” said Tad Devine, a longtime Democratic strategist who served as a senior adviser to Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign. “I think they are trying to come down from 55 [Democrats] to get to 50 as fast as they can in the Senate.”

In back channels, these concerns are making their way to the top levels of the administration. Top Senate Democrats have expressed concerns to the White House about a possible special election for a Senate seat in Massachusetts, a Democratic source close to conversation told The Huffungton Post. Another Democratic source — who, like the first, would only discuss sensitive conversations on condition of anonymity — confirmed that concerns were expressed. A third source added that leaders in the Senate also said they would be comfortable with a prospective Kerry nomination if it is clear that the White House is invested in a subsequent special election.

Speaking of Clinton, I HOPE she is feeling better. Whoever takes her positions, she certainly will be missed.

Obama Calls For “Meaningful Action”

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 15th December 2012

Good morning!

First, I want to say that my heart goes out to the families and friends of the victims of this horrific massacre in Connecticut. Whenever something like this happens, and it has been happening too much, this is something that we never think will happen again, yet it continues to happen over and over. It has got to stop.

What are we going to do to prevent this from happening again? When are we going to have the gun control conversation? When are we going to take gun control seriously and ban assault weapons?

President Obama spoke briefly from the White House this afternoon, delivering emotional remarks about the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

An emotional President Obama on Friday called for unspecified “meaningful action” regardless of political consequences, after a school shooting in Newtown, CT, reportedly killed 27 people, including 18 children.

“We’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics,” Obama said during a brief address from the White House, where he repeatedly wiped away tears.

“We’ve endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years. Each time I learn the news, I react not as a president, but as anybody else would, as a parent. And that is especially true today,” said Obama, the father of two daughters.

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Obama says we need to take “meaningful action.”

And then…what I found on Maddow’s blog, “This Week in God”, you’ve got Mike Huckabee on FOX saying shit like this:

Neil Cavuto said that many invariably ask after tragedies like this, “How could God let this happen?” Huckabee responded:

“Well, you know, it’s an interesting thing. We ask why there is violence in our schools but we have systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage? [...]

“You know, God wasn’t armed. He didn’t go to the school. But God will be there in the form of a lot people with hugs and with therapy and a whole lot of ways in which I think he will be involved in the aftermath. Maybe we ought to let him in on the front end and we wouldn’t have to call him to show up when it’s all said and done at the back end.”

Here’s the video if you want to watch the full segment

And if you want to read the interesting full opinion about Huckabee’s comments on Maddow’s blog, click here.

I also want to end with saying to those who have been celebrating Hanukkah, Happy Hanukkah! – I HOPE that you have been enjoying your holiday with friends and family!

Peace & Love

Flap Your Lips Friday

Good morning!

Well, considering the comments on yesterday’s blog write, no doubt many of you are disappointed and perhaps your feelings go even further, over Obama’s big screw-up yesterday. I know I am. To let U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice go when she has been nothing but support to him, been there for him, a great candidate for Secretary of State…to sacrifice her for him…well it is just plain cowardice of Obama.

How could Obama do this to a woman? This is a president who was raised by women, who is now surrounded by women. It just goes to show you,  that when it gets down to business…when our livelihood is on the line, women have to depend ON WOMEN. Because evidently, once you depend on men, this is what happens. But then Obama’s advisers are mostly women so what does that tell us? The obvious is not good.

Look, Obama not only needed to do the right thing, and he didn’t, but he also needed to show the repubs who’s in control – show them he has balls.  The repubs pushed to get what they want, and Obama didn’t defend when he needed to; he caved. I don’t care if some of his administration pushed for him to do this as well. We already know that not all Dems are in support and loyal to him. When it came down to making a decision, He should’ve done the right thing and gone with his gut, but instead he was gutless.

In my opinion Obama needed to remember what the repubs did over health reform. As much as I am grateful that we got the Affordable Care Act, we could’ve gotten single payer health care had Obama stuck with it and fought for it. When will he learn that no matter what, the repubs are not going to support him no matter what they say. No matter how Obama gives in and compromises, the repubs aren’t going to budge – they won’t vote in favor ever. So why bother compromising?  Why bother working with them? They will never do the right thing – The repubs have no morals and no scruples. And they still want him to fail more than they will ever want the country to succeed.

He should’ve said fuck ‘em over health care and he should’ve said the same thing over this incident with Rice.

But he didn’t. If he didn’t learn over this incident, will he ever?

This is not good, not now and not for the future of this administration, and our country. This should not have happened. This was the time for Obama to be BOLD, not give a shit about what the repubs say or do, especially now…and look what he has done. The last thing we want is for anyone to think that the repubs have any control or power over the president. And right now they know he cowered. And once the repubs know you’ll cower, they will take it and work it as long and as far as they can with not a thought of how it will affect the American people. They don’t give a shit.

I don’t even want to think what affect it may have over the 2014 elections should republicans get any sort of mojo back from this screw-up.

(Sigh) In case you have little idea of what I’m talking about or want to read up on the latest about Rice, here’s the write. If you want to see the video, click on the title below; I can’t seem to post it.

Susan Rice Withdrawal: How Obama’s Likely Secretary Of State Pick Fell Apart

WASHINGTON — In a phone call with the president on Thursday, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice formally withdrew her name from consideration as the next Secretary of State, putting an abrupt end to a political drama that had unfolded on the Senate floor and television airwaves for months.

Rice made her decision, administration officials told The Huffington Post, “during the last couple days,” after considering the heated battle that would have ensued had she been tapped to replace departing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

“If nominated, I am now convinced that the confirmation process would be lengthy, disruptive and costly – to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities,” Rice wrote in her letter to President Barack Obama. “That trade-off is simply not worth it to our country.”

“Her decision demonstrates the strength of her character, and an admirable commitment to rise above the politics of the moment to put our national interests first,” the president said in a statement shortly thereafter. He will meet with Rice in person on Friday.

For all the high-minded niceties offered publicly, a genuine frustration could be felt below the surface. Not just from Rice’s defenders, who had spent weeks yearning for the White House to push back more forcefully against her critics, or from Democrats, who wanted Obama to go forward with the nomination and make an example out of those pledging to block her appointment. It also came from within the administration itself, which felt that a few dogmatic lawmakers, aided by a sympathetic press, had had a damaging effect on the course and conduct of foreign policy.

“She has been overwhelmingly confirmed for two different jobs in two different administrations and any fair reading of her record was exceptional,” said Tommy Vietor, a White House spokesman. “We are confident she could have been confirmed.”

The state of play on the Hill seemed to confirm that Rice’s withdrawal wasn’t related to congressional vote counts. Top Democrats have said for some time that Rice was likely to secure the support needed to win confirmation. A Senate Democratic aide told the Huffington Post Thursday that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) hadn’t whipped his caucus — that is, taken a tally of his members — so there was no reason to think that calculus had changed. The aide added that Reid felt confident he could have held the Democrats in line, making it so that only five Republican senators were needed to confirm her.

Rice’s nomination would certainly have been in the majority leader’s interest. He had warned the White House against nominating Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass) to the Foggy Bottom post because doing so would create an open Senate seat in Massachusetts. Kerry now appears to be the frontrunner for the nomination.

In a show of defiance, Vietor notably declined to rule out a future post for Rice.

“She is going to go to the UN and down the road she could be Secretary of State, National Security Advisor, any number of things,” he said.

And yet, the White House will inevitably be painted as partially to blame for Rice’s failed bid.

For weeks, Rice was accused of having intentionally misled the American people about the cause and nature of the September attack on an American diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya. Two senators in particular, John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), charged that Rice’s role in conveying the administration’s early understanding of the events — that they had been inspired by an anti-Islam video and were not an act of terror — was enough to disqualify her from a cabinet position.

There was, at one point, genuine disagreement within the administration over how much the president and his staff needed to push back on the criticism. Obama forcefully defended Rice during his first post-election press conference, telling reporters that the critics were directing their barbs at the wrong person. For a short time, it appeared, the “come-at-me” approach would suffice.

But the attacks didn’t fade, and the White House struggled to come up with the right way to publicly respond.

Soon enough, Rice was angling for the opportunity to defend herself. She proposed heading to the Hill for direct talks with some of her Senate detractors. It was a gamble: she would be creating the perception that she and the administration were laying the groundwork for her nomination while lending presidential legitimacy to a line of attack that the administration didn’t want legitimized. An administration official confirmed routine talks had taken place between the White House and Rice’s staff over how best to respond. She ended up going.

The talks backfired. Graham, McCain, and Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) left their meeting insisting that it had raised more questions than it answered. Soon, another voice of dissent joined the chorus. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), typically a centrist Republican, dug into the past to suggest that Rice may somehow have been responsible for security failures ahead of the terrorist bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa in the late 1990s.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney offered some cover during his daily briefings, but Democrats widely panned his efforts as insufficient. Left unaddressed, the controversy over Rice’s appearance on the Sunday shows had metastasized beyond control, and the perception that Rice would be a lightening rod was cemented. She apparently lost the will for the battle.

“It was her decision,” said one official close to the administration, “but my sense is no one tried to change her mind.”

By the time the withdrawal announcement was made, even Rice’s allies were caught off guard. The conventional wisdom had been that the criticism of Rice would only make Obama more eager to fight for her appointment. One friend of Rice expressed confusion over why the decision was suddenly made to not have that fight at all. But administration officials stressed that the decision was hers alone.

“I know people are going to write that [we ducked the issue] but the important thing is she made this decision … she wanted to rise above this absurd political theater,” said Vietor. “As it became clear that this could be a partisan food fight she decided it wouldn’t be true to who she is to be a distraction to the priorities of the president’s agenda.”

********

Readers: The write says, “Her decision demonstrates the strength of her character, and an admirable commitment to rise above the politics of the moment to put our national interests first,” the president said in a statement shortly thereafter.  What about the strength of Obama’s Character? National interests first? Uh huh. I think somehow his strength of character was lost somewhere in the midst of politics of the moment, while he was putting his interests first.

It was her decision? Yeah right.

Yes, I know my republican readers are just snickering at me thinking, “Ha! Your guy has screwed up”. Yes, I agree with you. But that doesn’t mean I would ever, even for one second, wish the president to be any one different than Obama. But yes, he did fuck up and we have yet to see how bad this will be.

I’m done flapping these lips. Your turn. Blog me.

Peace out.

Lies Lies And More Lies

And Congratulations for the biggest lie of them all goes to….

Good morning!

Carly: It seems we’re reading the same writes. And you may be right about Michigan’s Governor signing into law the big lie his” Right to Work” - this is indeed very upsetting. All I can say is the repubs are still sore about losing the election and will continue to fight the president in his agenda to help all the American people  and do everything they possibly can to make him fail, all at the expense of the American people. I HOPE that come the 2014 elections, people will remember the repubs in the House that did this (and no doubt whatever else the House legislates against the wellness of the American people until then) and vote them out of office. The House is bringing us down and that needs to change.

So yes, I agree with you, and today I still want to highlight the LSOS Romney.

So…here’s the write:

PolitiFact Lie Of The Year: Mitt Romney’s Jeeps In China Ad

Mitt Romney China

PolitiFact has named Mitt Romney’s claim that Jeep is moving its U.S. production to China as its “Lie Of The Year.”

Romney made the false claim in a speech on the campaign trail and a television ad, despite Chrysler’s assertion that it is maintaining its American operations and considering expanding production to China. His campaign sparked controversy when it aired the commercial in Ohio.

On Wednesday, PolitiFact declared the ad ”brazenly false.” The fact-checking organization outlined the origins of the claim and the backlash that ensued. “People often say that politicians don’t pay a price for deception, but this time was different,” it wrote. “A flood of negative press coverage rained down on the Romney campaign, and he failed to turn the tide in Ohio, the most important state in the presidential election.”

PolitiFact, of course, attracted its own share of controversy during the 2012 election — particularly for its review of politicians’ statements in its “Truth-O-Meter.” MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, for example, became one of the organization’s most outspoken critics when she raged against the organization for its assessment of a claim by Marco Rubio as well as President Obama’s State of the Union address.

Comments? Blog me.

Ruth, SM: I couldn’t have said it better. I was struggling with the words on how to get rid of this guy knowing his job is for life, and death our only relief, without blatantly wishing death upon him.  So your request of putting the situation into “God’s hands” pretty much took care of it for me. Let’s HOPE He’s listening. Okay…well…I guess it can’t be avoided - there’s my blatant wish of death. Let’s just call it a sacrifice for the good of the American people. Because really….we will be, as you say, “doomed as a nation”, if Scalia is still around.

Steven: :) Feels pretty good doesn’t it?

Peace out.
