Good morning!

In light of yesterday’s post, although I am one of those who judges debates on quality of information and truthfulness, ie., lies vs truth…substance over style, :), those aren’t the only things that I look at when I make a judgement of whether I think someone did a good job or not. I didn’t tout president Obama yesterday in his performance – I pretty much just rode Romney on his LSOS ways. If I was to judge Obama further, I would say Obama could’ve done a better job in his first debate.

This article speaks it well:

How Obama Was Clobbered

If you believe Barack Obama distinguished himself favorably in the first debate, you won’t like the following rampage one bit. Those who judge debates on quality of information and truthfulness might have kept different score. But in the realm of making an impression, and in winning the lightning-quick emotional judgments that people make of each other, Obama suffered from ineloquence, hesitation, rambling, old material (the grandmother again, really?), and inadvertent signals of weakness.

Obama’s painful defeat was foreshadowed by the president’s first response, when he utterly ignored moderator Jim Lehrer’s question and delivered a prepared opening statement. All political debaters bring prepared material to the podium. But without the slightest reference to the question in framing his answer, or allusion to Lehrer’s topic within the answer, Obama’s opening segment bristled with nonchalant disrespect for the audience. And Romney trounced him by buckling right down to his first volley of highly energized and precisely relevant bullet points.

The bizarre opening play could be forgotten if the president had snapped out of his rote recitation quickly thereafter, but Obama’s entire performance conveyed the impression of a candidate whose staff had failed to inform him that the event was a debate. He appeared flummoxed by questions, baffled and wounded by his opponent’s attacks, peevish, and overwhelmed by Romney’s passion.

The body language was as unpresidential as it gets. Obama looked exhausted, and perhaps he was — the man is running the country and managing responses to world affairs, while also struggling to keep his job. Governor Romney’s only job is to prepare for campaign events. So it was understandable when Obama appeared to be performing a chore — scowling, withdrawing, stuttering, going through motions.

Still, his job for 90 minutes was to perform in a nationally broadcast TV show that serves an important function in the democracy. If this had been an audition for a dramatic role as president, President Obama wouldn’t get a call-back. He was sluggish; his responses amorphous and dissolute. Romney was quick and precise.

Memo to Obama campaign staff: Get a grip on your man and eliminate the following habits:

• “Wanna.” First of all, he should stop saying “wanna” entirely. Failing to pronounce words is unpresidential. More important, in a debate, saying you want to do something is weak compared to saying you will do something. Obama is accused of failure. His assertions should be filled with “I did” and “I will do.” Romney did not “want” anything in this debate. He intended. That is a presidential attitude.

• “Four years ago.” This is whining. Whining is also unpresidential. Everyone knows Obama was elected at a difficult historical moment. Complaining affirms accusations of failure.

• Nodding. It is inadvisable to nod your head when the opposing candidate is blasting you mercilessly! Humility is fine, and so is acknowledgment that you’re listening. But on TV, it looks like you are agreeing.

• Tighten the hell up. Does the president believe the eloquence myth? Because although Barack Obama is an outstanding writer, and a great orator when working from a script, he is not often an eloquent man off-script. Viewers had time to check scores on ESPN while he gathered his woolen thoughts in long preludes to halting replies. The president’s sentences were strung together in wide, spacious nets of speech that allowed the viewer’s attention to slip through and crash to the ground. Obama worked the game like a slow pitcher in baseball who walks halfway to the infield and back between pitches, trying to break the batter’s rhythm. In this case, it just gave Romney time to reload.

• “I believe.” Less theory, more declamation, please. The president’s most potentially powerful remarks were undermined at the end by the repeated weak-kneed disclaimer: “That’s not what I believe.” Against Romney’s passionate engagement and purposeful language, Obama’s intellectual musing sounded as if a political science professor had taken the president’s place on stage.

Obama’s listless closing statement might be explained as a natural consequence of the thrashing he had just endured. Here, and at other times, the president seemed to credit Americans with the progress made during the first term. That is flattering, and of course everyone wants a president who doesn’t get too carried away with himself. But constant deflection of credit invites people to muse over this question: “Well, then, what do we need you for?”

Here’s hoping the president gets more sleep before the next debate.

Good morning!

Well, I can see from all the comments that many of you watched the debate last night. I did too. Yes, I can see that the republicans are gloating and the dems are gasping. I can’t say it was Obama’s best debate “performance”, but like, Sam, this isn’t American Idol…these aren’t actors playing a part to win an Oscar - This is the real job of the President of The United States.

Who is the candidate that has a better plan, and is best qualified to run our country for the betterment of all? You know my answer.

If this was the Oscars, I agree, let Romney win for the “Best LSOS“. Obama is winner for the “Best POTUS“.

It’s sad that voters will look at “style over substance” (Thanks Maddow blog for articulating what I could not) and swing their undecided vote to the LSOS side simply because Romney was the stronger debater, and let me remind you, spewing rhetoric and lies.

For 18 months we’ve been hearing what both sides will bring to the table. Nothing has changed. Romney is still lying his ass off and will continue to do so and whatever else he needs to do to win.

And for the past 4 years we’ve been experiencing just what Obama can do and has done in spite of the “party of no’, voting against any idea or plan the dems have had. And in spite of it all, he has gotten a lot done for America. More than any other president. But many refuse to see that.

Even though it is a fact that the repubs planned to sabotage America on the night of Obama’s inauguration.  Many refuse to see that as well.

And now, we watch as the republicans disenfranchise all across the nation and yet, again people refuse to see that.

People have the gall to judge his “style”…and really, it comes down to the “stupidity”. The stupidity to choose Romney over Obama just because he did a better job at the debate last night. That just shows you how simple minded, short-sighted people can be that they can’t see past the “drama” of the debate, to get to the core of what’s really important for America. These aren’t actors, this isn’t a play – this is real life and real lives are at stake. 

If you want a president and party that will lie to you day after day and make promises that they never intend to keep because their best interest is them and theirs, not the 99%, and certainly not the 47%…If you want a party who shows daily that they simply don’t care about you…who will lead our country to hell in the proverbial hand basket, then vote for Romney.

You already know how I feel about Obama. Do I care if he wasn’t his best last night? Yes. Not because I wanted to see him waste Romney away,  - yes that would’ve been entertaining. But only because there are so many short sighted, ignorant voters who will only vote based on the “show” last night, based on “style”, and not “substance”, because they’re too lazy to get the real facts and make an informed responsible decision.

If they took the time to really get involved…to learn the facts and address and confront the blatant lies Romney keep spewing, they would know that Obama is the best and only pick for president.

I am loyal to Obama and I know why. I know what is the right thing and best thing to do for our country. I know what the facts are and what Obama’s plans are. I know and trust that country comes first for him and that the best interest of all of the American people is at the forefront of his mind.

Obama will do what is right for all and lead our country to greatness. Romney will not. and in the end, our country will be in ruins.

The bottom line is this: Romney is a LSOS. Let’s HOPE that the media will have a field day exposing the lies that Romney expressed last night, and let’s HOPE that those of you undecideds or those of you that are leaning toward Romney are listening and that you come to your senses.

I found this write on Maddow’s blog that I liked. I didn’t come up with “style over substance”, but it certainly articulates how I feel. I encourage you all to think about it: If after last night’s debate, are you voting “style over substance”?

My suggestion is “don’t”. Know the facts and Know the lies.

The triumph of style over substance

One of the main drawbacks to televised political theatrics is that we tend to evaluate the events in an unconstructive way. We see players on a stage, after extensive rehearsals, playing to a packed house, and we judge them as if they are actors — who seemed “crisp” and looked “confident.”

In other words, we invariably value political theater on its theatrical qualities, watching to see who knew their lines and delivered them more effectively.

By this measure, when it comes to determining who “won” last night’s debate in Denver, I’d argue the conventional wisdom is right: it wasn’t close. Based on style and performance, Mitt Romney did all of the things a “winning” debater is supposed to do.

Did he know his lines? Obviously, yes. Did he deliver them well? Flawlessly. I argued last week that Romney’s “strength as a debater is wildly underappreciated” and “if Democrats expect Romney to falter in the debates, they’re making a big mistake.” Last night illustrated what I was talking about.

President Obama, meanwhile, was listless and timid. He stumbled on his words. At times he seemed distracted and unfocused. There were key opportunities for the president to go on the offensive, but for whatever reason, he chose not to engage. For pundits checking boxes — who gave the appearance of being “in control”? — Romney excelled.

But all of this overlooks an element I like to think it sometimes important: substance. The men on the stage last night aren’t actors; they’re candidates for the nation’s highest office. Delivering lines well is a nice quality, but as the dust settles, it’s worth pausing to reflect on whether those lines were true and reflect reality in any meaningful way.

Indeed, it seems to me Romney thrived in large part because he abandoned the pretense of honesty. And as it turns out, winning a debate is surprisingly easy when a candidate decides he can say anything and expect to get away with it.

Romney told viewers his proposed $5 trillion tax cut isn’t really his proposed $5 trillion tax cut. He suggested he could eliminate a $1 trillion deficit by going after Big Bird. He said his non-existent health care plan protects those with pre-existing conditions when in reality the exact opposite is true. He cited trumped up “studies” from far-right ideologues as if they’re legitimate, assuming the public won’t know the difference. He said a deficit that’s shrunk has actually “doubled.”

And when Romney wasn’t repeating falsehoods, he was furiously shaking an Etch A Sketch, rolling out yet another version of himself.

This new model — version 8.0? 9.0? — likes regulations of the financial industry, wants to work with Democrats, thinks his Massachusetts health care law was a great idea, and has no use for the goals of his running mate’s budget plan that Romney enthusiastically endorsed. Does this in any way reflect the candidate who’s been running for president the last year and a half? No, but the Republican assumes most voters won’t realize and most news organizations covering the campaign won’t tell them.

He might very well be right.

But as Romney and his supporters take a victory lap this morning, it’s fair to note their success was a triumph for style over substance.

2012 Presidential Debate Schedule

The dates and venues have been announced for the 2012 Presidential debates between President Obama and Governor Mitt Romney. The date for the Vice Presidential debate has also been announced.

Tickets – Tickets for each debate are controlled by the Commission on Presidential Debates and are extremely limited since the debates are primarily produced for television. The majority of tickets are distributed to host university students and faculty through a lottery system. Please click the “Tickets” link next to the college name listed below for further information.

TV Channels – Each debate will be broadcast live on C-SPAN, ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, as well as all cable news channels including CNN, Fox News and MSNBC among others.

Live Stream – Each debate will be streamed live online. Check back here for the live stream.

Candidates each will have two minutes to respond, and an additional minute for the moderator to facilitate a discussion. The town meeting participants will be undecided voters selected by the Gallup Organization.

Kerry: Thanks. However he came to the conclusion, doesn’t matter to me as long as logic prevailed. This voter I.D. thing is just irking me to no end…and the fact that not much has been done when it is so obvious why this is happening is getting me even more riled.

I used to think that our government was pretty corrupt but covert about it, so we didn’t really know what was going on. Hence, all of the conspiracy theories. If you think it is happening, it probably is. Now there is nothing covert about the corruptness – conspiracy theories are alive, thriving, and blatant. If you think it is happening…all you have to do is look around and see that it is.

Gordon: It has been said and I sure HOPE people believe it and vote wisely, because I certainly do and will.

Sarah Silverman Mocks Voter ID Laws With 2012 Election PSA (VIDEO)

Sarah Silverman isn’t taking the voter ID laws complicating the 2012 election lightly. After all, who’s going to look out for black people, poor people, old people and students if not America’s potty-mouthed comedic sweetheart?

Making it illegal to vote without a photo ID is supposed to prevent voter fraud, but as Sarah points out in this NSFW PSA, some politicians like Rep. Mike Turzai (R-PA) really want voter ID laws in place to prevent certain demographics from voting (for Barack Obama). Also, what exactly is all this “voter fraud” we’re supposed to be so afraid of?

“Oh yeah, all that crazy ‘voter fraud’ that’s going around. There’s so much ‘fraud’ around that free, anonymous civil right,” she jokes.

If that weren’t enough, Sarah points out that U.S. Veteran photo ID cards, social security cards and student IDs are not accepted under the laws, but you can use gun permit IDs. You just can’t make this stuff up.

Readers: I know…I know…it is frustrating to hear all that is going on with voting…all the disenfranchisement, and yet nothing is happening to prevent it and protect the voters from these “ballot bandits” ( no I didn’t coin that term – wish I did :) Why aren’t the Dems telling it like it is? Why is no one telling people that they have the right to vote and this is what you can do if you are harassed or suppressed. So I’m going to tell you.  If you are harassed while voting or suppressed from voting by anyone. Make sure that you get their name first and then tell them that you are going to report them to the FBI. And then do it.  We can’t let these LSOS “ballot bandits”, who are the only ones committing voter fraud, get away with stealing and preventing you and anyone else from voting.

Obama Touts ‘New Economic Patriotism’ In 2-Minute Ad (VIDEO)

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is pitching a broad economic argument to voters ahead of next week’s debate with Republican opponent Mitt Romney, buying TV time in seven battleground states to promote what he calls a “new economic patriotism.”

In a two-minute ad, Obama looks into the camera as he promotes an economic plan he says will create 1 million manufacturing jobs, cut oil imports and hire thousands of new teachers.

The ad set to air in New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Nevada and Colorado comes as Obama and Republican Mitt Romney shadow each other while looking for votes in a closely contested race. On Thursday, the two candidates are scheduled to campaign in the same state for the third straight day, this time in Virginia, a critical battleground in the Nov. 6 election.

Romney is to appear in suburban Washington for a veterans event, while Obama speaks at Farm Bureau Live in Virginia Beach.

The simultaneous visits follow an all-day duel Wednesday in Ohio, where Romney declared he can do more than Obama to improve the lives of average people. Obama scoffed that a challenger who calls half the nation “victims” was unlikely to be of much help.

Meanwhile, new Republican-leaning independent groups have entered the presidential advertising fray as polling suggests Romney’s campaign may be losing ground against Obama in key states such as Ohio and Florida.

The commercials, aimed at voters who supported Obama in 2008 but are now undecided, join those from the campaigns and outside groups swamping a narrow and possibly shrinking map of competitive states in the fast-moving presidential contest. Americans for Job Security launched an $8.7 million ad buy in six battleground states, while the Ending Spending Action Fund, a new conservative group bankrolled by billionaire Joe Ricketts, was set to debut a $10 million, four-state ad campaign on Thursday.

Polls show Obama widening his lead in several key states amid backlash from a leaked video in which Romney disparages the 47 percent of Americans who don’t pay federal income tax as government-dependent Obama supporters who see themselves as victims and won’t take responsibility for their own lives.

Obama’s campaign was reveling in the latest public polling but trying to crush any sense of overconfidence. “If we need to pass out horse blinders to all of our staff, we will do that,” campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Wednesday.

Romney went after working-class voters at three stops in Ohio, while Obama rallied college crowds at Bowling Green and Kent State. Early voting in Ohio begins next week.

“If President Obama were to be re-elected, what you’d see is four more years like the last four years, and we can’t afford another four more years like the last four years,” Romney told a boisterous crowd in Toledo at the day’s final stop.

Romney said the country had lost more than half a million manufacturing jobs in the past four years. “This is not the path we want for America,” he said.

Romney’s campaign has been reeling from his caught-on-video comments at a Florida fundraiser last May. New opinion polls, conducted after the video became public last week, show Obama opening up apparent leads over Romney in battleground states, including Ohio and Virginia.

Romney told ABC News that the race was in a statistical tie in some national polls.

“I’m very pleased with some polls, less so with other polls, but frankly at this early stage, polls go up, polls go down,” he said.

Obama was not about to let the video comments fade away. He said Wednesday that “America is not about what can be done for us. It’s about what can be done by us together, as one nation, as one people.”

He added, “You can’t make it happen if you write off half the nation before you take office.”

Obama supporters are also working to keep Romney’s “47 percent” comments alive. Democratic super PAC Priorities USA Action and a political group tied to the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees released a radio ad in Ohio and Virginia airing the remarks. The ad, part of a $1.25 million radio buy, tells listeners Romney’s “just not looking out for us.”

Obama flubbed a line at Kent State while building to his argument for keeping jobs in the United States. He mistakenly said, “I want to see us export more jobs.” He quickly corrected himself, saying he meant to say “export more products.”

“Excuse me,” Obama said. “I was a channeling my opponent there for a second.”

UPDATE [7:49 a.m. ET]: The Romney campaign has responded to Obama’s new advertisement. Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul released the following statement:

“Four years ago, Barack Obama called it ‘unpatriotic’ to run up debts our children will have to pay. Yet in the time it takes his latest ad to run, our national debt grows by at least another $5 million. With $16 trillion in debt, 23 million Americans struggling for work, and spending out of control, President Obama’s record is clear: we can’t afford another four years that look like the last four years. Mitt Romney will strengthen the middle class, create 12 million new jobs and deliver what President Obama hasn’t – a real recovery.”
