Rachel Maddow Rips Mitt Romney For Lies

Good morning!

I’m sorry I have not been visible much here lately. It is the Fall season – one of my busiest times of the year. I will get a break on Tuesday so HOPEfully then I can check in and respond to a few of you. I do have to say that I do visually scan the comments when I have a moment to see what catches my eye. And I usually go to the last comment just for fun.

And the last comment from yesterday caught my eye. I have to say, Upworthy: That segment with Ann Coulter on The View was just crazy. She was getting it from all sides, and even Elisabeth Hasselback, a republican, whom I am no fan of and whom usually is very verbal, didn’t jump in and add much but didn’t say much in defense of Coulter either.

Coulter definitely deserves the title LSOS, and she knows it…makes tons of money being one, and is laughing all the way to the bank, with thoughts of what other lies she’s going to print in her next book to bring in more.

Okay….I saw this a few days ago but thought it was worthy of printing today. Romney continues to be the LSOS that he is and proves it time and time again. Rachel Maddow calls him on it.

Rachel Maddow Rips Mitt Romney For Lies In Campaign Ads (VIDEO)

Rachel Maddow laid into Mitt Romney’s campaign for failing to correct false claims made in campaign ads, even though the Republican presidential candidate recently told reporters otherwise.

Earlier this week, Romney told a CNN reporter that, when it comes to using accurate facts and figures, his campaign has “been absolutely spot on.” He added, “And anytime there’s anything that’s been amiss, we correct it or remove it.”

Maddow said that a campaign correcting inaccurate facts is a “normal process.”

“That’s what makes that statement so newsworthy, because they Romney campaign…hasn’t been correcting or removing their own false claims from the record when they are proven to be false, which is a strange decision for a campaign operating at the presidential level,” she said.

Maddow went through a number of campaign ads that included false claims that the Romney campaign did not correct or remove. For instance, Romney’s first general election campaign ad included Obama saying, “If we keep talking about the economy, we are going to lose.”

In actuality, Obama said that comment on the campaign trail in 2008, and was quoting then-Republican presidential candidate, John McCain. “Sen. McCain’s campaign actually said, and I quote, ‘If we keep talking about the economy, we are going to lose.’”

Maddow said the discrepancy between what Obama actually said and the way the Romney campaign presented it in its campaign add was pretty severe. “That’s a really big, really bad lie,” she said.

Despite the blatant inaccuracy, the Romney campaign kept the ad intact and on its YouTube channel.

Good morning!

ALEC: The Scheme to Remake America, One State House at a Time

This week, we report on the most influential corporate-funded political force most Americans have never heard of — ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council. A national consortium of state politicians and powerful corporations, ALEC presents itself as a “nonpartisan public-private partnership”. But behind that mantra lies a vast network of corporate lobbying and political action aimed to increase corporate profits at public expense without public knowledge.

In state houses around the country, hundreds of pieces of boilerplate ALEC legislation are proposed or enacted that would, among other things, dilute collective bargaining rights, make it harder for some Americans to vote, and limit corporate liability for harm caused to consumers — each accomplished without the public ever knowing who’s behind it.

We explore ALEC’s self-serving machine at work, acting in a way one Wisconsin politician describes as “a corporate dating service for lonely legislators and corporate special interests.”

Here’s a preview:

By the way, join me for my first LIVE CHAT of 2012. You can set up a reminder for yourself and start submitting questions here. I look forward to it.

To discover more about ALEC tune in to Democracy Now:

The United States of ALEC: Bill Moyers on the Secretive Corporate-Legislative Body Writing Our Laws

Democracy Now! premieres “The United States of ALEC,” a special report by legendary journalist Bill Moyers on how the secretive American Legislative Exchange Council has helped corporate America propose and even draft legislation for states across the country. ALEC brings together major U.S. corporations and right-wing legislators to craft and vote on “model” bills behind closed doors. It has come under increasing scrutiny for its role in promoting “stand your ground” gun laws, voter suppression bills, union-busting policies and other controversial legislation.

Although billing itself as a “nonpartisan public-private partnership,” ALEC is actually a national network of state politicians and powerful corporations principally concerned with increasing corporate profits without public scrutiny. Moyers’ special will air this weekend on Moyers & Company, but first airs on Democracy Now! today. “The United States of ALEC” is a collaboration between Okapi Productions, LLC and the Schumann Media Center. Readers: Plan on pretty much everything I discuss or post to this blog, until the day of the election, is going to be about Politics, with maybe a few things thrown in as a breather. But really with the most important election of our lives less than 40 days away, what else is there to discuss? If you’re not into politics, now is the time to turn into a political animal, and get active.

It’s Friday…Blog me. Peace out.

Romney: dumb…Dumber…DUMBEST

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 27th September 2012

Good morning!

In a normal election, a stagnant economy and global unrest would be pretty tricky things for an incumbent president to campaign with, but for Barack Obama they’re a walk in the park. Why? Because Mitt Romney keeps messing up all the freakin’ time.

On Tuesday night’s “Daily Show,” Jon Stewart joked, “Whatever his missteps are as a candidate, Barack Obama is surging in the polls because the closer we get to the election, the dumber Mitt Romney appears to be getting.”

He premiered a new segment called “Barack Obama Is the Luckiest Dude on the Planet” to explain the phenomenon.

Check out the full clip above.

Tipping The Scales Of Justice

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 24th September 2012

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

These five Supreme Court Justices, Scalia, Thomas, Alito, Roberts, Kennedy (STARK) have enacted Law with their “Citizens United” decision that will change this country as we know it. It is a disaster of such proportions that it could destroy the nation. I mean that literally because they have made it legal for the corporations and special interest groups to buy our politicians with their political contributions. Now those same corporation and special interest groups are doing the same with our judges.

Judges are no different from politicians – they need campaign cash to run for office. Ideology is lost on the man who can not get elected to practice it. STARK with its “Citizens United” law has made sure that the honorable man won’t get that chance.  One day that title “Citizen’s United” will be the epitome of the Big Lie, the Double Speak, used to give control of this country and the world to corporations.

That being said, this has been in my files for over a week now, and I’ve been meaning to post it but obviously haven’t until now. It’s a write that is a few weeks old but still valid and worthy of your eyes.

Special Interests Tip the Scales of Justice in Favor of Corporations

Americans are rightly concerned about significant sums of corporate campaign cash capturing their elected representatives. Even more troubling, though less reported, is the flood of campaign money that has poured into elections for state court justices over the last two decades. Judges are supposed to be independent, fair arbiters of justice. In the Citizens United era, however, judges will increasingly face a choice between siding with the law, or siding with special interests that can spend unlimited sums on their re-elections.

In just the last 12 years, state supreme courts have seen exponentially expensive races, with candidates raising nearly $250 million. The states which have seen the most judicial campaign money – Alabama, Texas, Michigan, Ohio – now have high courts dominated by judges funded by corporate interests. When pro-corporate judges control the bench, individuals suing corporations face higher hurdles. In a recentCenter for American Progress report, we examined cases at these courts from 1992-2010, to get a sense of how the law changed after elections for the courts were flooded with special interest money.

With money playing such a large role in judicial elections, the interest groups with the most money increasingly have an advantage. In courtrooms across our country, big corporations and other special interests are tilting the playing field in their favor.

For example, the insurance industry in Ohio was dissatisfied with rulings against insurance companies and began donating heavily to the campaigns of friendly judicial candidates, who upon taking a seat on the bench — then abruptly reversed those rulings. After the Alabama Supreme Court developed a reputation for sticking up for consumers in arbitration cases, the state’s chamber of commerce and other business groups inundated pro-corporate candidates with campaign cash. Contributions from Alabama’s Chamber of Commerce accounted for 40 percent of all campaign contributions in the most recent high court election in the state. And the new, corporate-funded justices are more likely to throw consumers out of court and into binding arbitration, which many view as inherently biased toward corporate parties.

Decisions in state courts, which hear 95 percent of legal disputes in the United States, have important consequences on ordinary citizens. One of the unfortunate plaintiffs in Alabama, Kimberly White, gave the title to her car as collateral for a short-term loan. She made two interest payments — the equivalent of a 300 percent annual interest rate. She then paid off the loan and got her title back. Alabama Title Loans nevertheless repossessed her car a few months later. As she handed the tow-truck driver the documentation of her repayment, she says he pushed the gas and nearly ran over her. She grabbed the door of the truck, and a passenger allegedly pulled her inside, forcing her into the backseat.

She sued the driver and the lender for assault and wrongful repossession. In July 2011, the Alabama Supreme Court forced White into arbitration, ruling that a binding arbitration clause remained in effect, even after she paid off the loan.

Examples like these are part of a broader trend. In our report, we examined case law from the six states that have seen the most campaign funds since 1992, looking at rulings in cases in which an individual sued a corporation. The states that have seen the most campaign spending have high courts dominated by judges that favor corporate defendants over individual plaintiffs.

A citizen might sue a corporation for a variety of reasons — an unsafe workplace, a dangerous product, or botched medical treatment. How can an ordinary citizen expect a fair trial if the judges hearing the case are funded by big corporations? Special interests are competing for influence in judicial races around the country, but in the states which have seen the most money, corporate special interests dominate fundraising.

The problem of corporate money infecting our state judicial system will only get worse. Spending by “independent” groups has becoming pervasive in judicial elections, as documented by Justice at Stake and the Brennan Center. North Carolina is the one state with a wide-scale public financing system for judicial elections, but the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision has now opened the door to limitless, “independent” SuperPAC spending in the state’s judicial elections. All this campaign cash means judgesspend more time focused on fundraising than on the law.

With judges backed by big business taking over our courts, are there any remaining institutions that can hold powerful corporations accountable? Americans will have a harder time using the courts to force employers and manufacturers not to cut back on safety to save money. Consumers will face steeper hurdles in holding accountable banks, payday lenders, and credit card companies that treat them unfairly.

Big business is tightening its grip on our courts. Instead of serving as a last resort for Americans seeking justice, judges are bending the law in a manner that satisfies the concerns of their corporate donors.

Andrew Blotky is the Director of Legal Progress at the Center for American Progress. Billy Corriher is the Associate Director for Research at Legal Progress and author of the recent Center for American Progress report, “Big Business Taking over State Supreme Courts.”

This post is part of the HuffPost Shadow Conventions 2012, a series spotlighting three issues that are not being discussed at the national GOP and Democratic conventions: The Drug War, Poverty in America, and Money in Politics.

Readers: How is everyone doing?  Did yu see the headliner on the Huff PoBlog this BABE.

Natalie:  Of course, I like girls. Oh, but you mean as lovas. :) Well…let’s just say that I am open to experiencing all sorts of love. Not to sound too old or motherly, but I think you would be happier with someone closer to your age. However, I am delighted that you would invite me to your 21st birthday party – thank you so much. Not sure I can make it, but I wish you the happiest of Happy Birthdays.

Whisper: That has been my thoughts for years.

Irene: Like everyone, we all need to do everything we possible can. You know I will.

渭詞: Thanks for your well thought out and well written comment that certainly gets to the point of the censorship, or lack of, with respect to my blog. I have always wanted it to be an open forum for all, and although some readers do object, I will continue to keep it as is. For reasons that I prefer it, as this slice of life is a true reflection of the bigger picture, but also because, who’s got time to pick and choose what should and shouldn’t be read? Seriously though, even if I did have the time, I absolutely wouldn’t censor my blog. As I previously stated, I always wanted it to be an open forum for all.

I mean, what good would it serve to “read” all of the horrific, racist, bigoted, sexist, etc. comments all on my own…sheltering reality from my readers, and coloring the blog rose-colored? You can’t take away that which exists simply by deleting it from print. Hell, if it was that easy, believe me, I would be the first to do it.

I am all about exposure and transparency on my blog. And illumination is imperative. I can promise you I will remain undaunted.

Lance: Again, another well thought out, well written comment. I completely understand and hear you as you compare your life and treatment from the republican party, with the treatment of muslim women by their men. I would have enjoyed seeing the looks on the faces of your friends and family after stating your thoughts and feelings so articulately. What could they say after that?

Russell: Yes I am. He is a child who has been abused. Please see Cynthia’s comment. My guess is, if he was a little white boy you wouldn’t be jumping on his prosecution.

Ah George: I knew you’d chime in on this one. You and your comments are so predictable.

Well, Harold: What can I say? Next time don’t be so shy. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Don’t you just hate that I just said that? :)

Hi Natalie: You’re back. Did you think I forgot you? Yes, Harry Denton’s is a fave place of mine, mostly because I love seeing Harry. I go there but not very often. Perhaps we will run into each other there sometime. If you see me, please don’t act like Harold and get tongue tied. :)

Hello again Andrew: No apology needed – you did not come on too strong, and I was not offended. It takes a bit more for me to be affected by what is said about me. Although you seem a bit angry at my readers. Perhaps you need more of a break – You did ask for one – Did you take it already, and you’re back for more? See I told ya – You’re either fascinated or addicted. Me too – Welcome to the club. :)

Kelly: Thanks for the plug. It’s too bad the denver man wasn’t a fan.

Miller: So you watched 60 minutes and you actually decided who to vote for based on who prays to God daily? I don’t buy it. Did you even listen to what Romney said? I guess it doesn’t matter – you’re voting color and using religion as an excuse. If you were a businessman you’d use Romney’s background in business as an excuse as well, when it was never important for the past 43 presidents to be businessmen, until a black man with no formal business background became president. All I can say is you better start praying yourself if you vote Romney in because you’re going to need to be praying to the Gods for help if he does win.

Peace out.

Vets: Republicans Are Not Your Friends

Good morning!

Every morning it gets more and more difficult to decide what to talk about…what to write about, because there is so much going on in the world. News is immediate and things change by the minute. Decisions…decisions…decisions…

Here’s my pick:

Senate Republicans Shaft the Vets

The young men and women who serve in our military return from fighting in the longest wars in American history to the worst jobs market in generations. They suffer higher unemployment rates than the general population: over one in ten is officially counted as unemployed — and that does not include those who have stopped looking for work or are forced to work part-time.

So yesterday, in one final vile act before adjournment for the elections, Senate Republicans used a point of order to block passage of the Veterans Jobs Corps proposal that would have provided a modest $1 billion to hire veterans to tend federal lands or gain priority in hiring at police and fire departments. The bill was crafted with bipartisan support. 58 Senators supported the bill, but Republicans put together the 40 votes needed to block its passage.

Why shaft the very veterans whose service politicians sanctimoniously celebrate at every occasion?

Is it because unemployed veterans are part of Mitt Romney’s scorned 47 percent?

Unemployed, they pay no taxes. They may feel they are “entitled” to the health care benefits they are guaranteed. Many take advantage of training and education benefits. Perhaps Republican senators simply didn’t want to help these “victims” feel entitled to a job in addition. (Of course, contrary to Mitt’s idiotic election strategery, like seniors, these “victims” tend to vote more Republican than Democratic)

Or is it because Senate Republicans remain committed to block any action that will produce jobs in their monomaniacal effort to make Barack Obama a one-term president. In the midst of the worst recession in generations, Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell famously announced at the beginning of the term that “the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”

Republicans then launched a scorched earth policy of obstruction, using the filibuster to block everything they could. They worked overtime to weaken the president’s initial recovery act, cutting its size and larding it with ineffective tax cuts. Once Republicans took the House, they joined in blocking additional jobs measures, including most recently the president’s American Jobs Act, while forcing cuts in spending that cost jobs. And then, of course, they denounce the president for failing to fix the economy.

Or perhaps Senate Republicans are simply fools, not knaves. Conservative Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma explained his vote against putting unemployed veterans to work by arguing that making progress on the nation’s debt was the best way to help them in the long-term. “We ought to do nothing now that makes the problem worse for our kids and grandkids,” he said. “In the run,” as John Maynard Keynes once said, “we are all dead” — a comment that gains grim meaning as the Defense Department reports that a veteran are killing themselves at the rate of one every 80 minutes

These are the same Republicans who squandered over three trillion dollars on the unfunded “war of choice” in Iraq. And now spending a billion on the veterans who risked their lives in that folly imposes too big a burden on our grandchildren. This is disgraceful politics. Naturally, the two Republican senators in close re-election races — Scott Brown in Massachusetts and Dean Heller of Nevada — were given permission to vote for the bill. The rest either are in safe seats or assume that Americans will forget by the time they come up for re-election. They’ll salute the troops, march in the parades, celebrate the returning heroes, and call for larding more billions into the Pentagon. But a small jobs programs for veterans in need of work? Not this year, not before the election.

Readers: Before the protests in Pakistan became the headliner for the Huff Po, I was reading about a vet, John Hoskins who although is not proud of his dependence on government. He scrapes by on a $900 monthly check from the Veterans Administration and $16 in food stamps.

He also states that he rejects Romney’s contention that he will vote for President Barack Obama “no matter what” to keep his benefits flowing. He is sour on politicians of both parties.

“I’m not in the bag for anyone,” he said. “I’m not voting for either of those guys.”

Wha’at? Are you kidding? After what you heard Romney say, that basically he could care less about you, you still put Romney and Obama on the same same level?  Really? How stupid and ignorant is that. Or is he just racist? I’m not saying he is but really, you have to just shake your head when someone who has benefited from government help, and when you are told point blank that you don’t matter by a presidential candidate, you still say, “I’m not voting for either of those guys”?  Don’t you know a “no” vote is a vote for the republicans?

I HOPE Hoskins, and others like him, read the above article and come to their senses – the republicans are not their friends. If Hoskins is currently struggling to make it on his monthy check from the Veterans Admin., he is going to be a lot worse off if Romney is president. The above article is just the beginning to how bad it could get for vets.

What will it take for people to get this?
