Romney Is Money’s Bitch

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 11th September 2012

Good morning!

I’m Voting for Obama Because I Love Money, But I’m Not Money’s B*tch

Romney is money’s bitch. He’s ambition’s bitch. He’s success’s bitch and he’s victory’s bitch. And, like those particular sort of pampered dogs you see in the laps of the very rich, he yaps and snaps and snarls at the everyday mutt. He’s frightened and confused by a dog who’s happy to treasure the sunshine and play with the other dogs and eat enough food to fill its belly and lap enough water to slake its thirst and then get out of the way for the other dogs to have their turn. Romney’s been trained since birth that not only are there No Other Dogs But Him And His Ilk, but that dogs who don’t aspire to immobility on a fat lap are to be snarled at, chased away, and bred out of existence.

In 2010 and 2011, Mitt and Ann paid $6.2 million in federal tax on $42.5 million in income (get away from my food!!!) for an average tax rate just shy of 15 percent (get away from my water!!!), substantially less than what most middle-income Americans pay (yapyapyapyap!!!)

He’s curled up so snugly and safely in the lap of wealth that he’s never once bolted and gallivanted and lived in the world. The freedom’s there, but he’d rather put more diamond studs, more trinkets and jewels, and more frills and feathers on his too-tight collar, and double-check that his leash is double-clasped to it, never to come loose.

And there’s nothing wrong with any of that — except that Romney has zero sympathy for those who don’t feel the same way he does. And he’s infecting other people — former friends of mine, who have warped and mutated into creatures of liquid ambition, effortless greed, with zero compassion for anyone who would dare to be happy to work a job and then simply value time with their families and friends and maybe expect some reasonable amount of health care and comfort. I’m seeing too many people, people who should know better, who truly think that life should be an endless hunching over a food bowl, chasing everyone else away, without respite. Fear is the fuel, and nothing frightens them more than people who aren’t fueled by fear.

Nothing wrong with being rich. Nothing wrong with striving and bettering yourself. But there’s definitely something wrong with people confusing capitalism and corporatism (the latter wants to destroy the former) — and then demanding everyone else make the same mistake. Obama is rich — by his own hand. He made his money writing two books — and those didn’t even make him bestseller bucks until after he became president. And he’s acted, as president, the way that people who become rich and know how to spend their money act. He’s traveled the world, broadened his horizons. And in his travels, maybe, maybehe’s tried to conquer some of the fear which, let’s face it, none of us truly never rid ourselves of. But goddamnit, he’s trying. Mitt Romney is the only person I’ve ever seen who’s traveled the world in wealth and comfort and managed to narrow the canvas of his experience and opinions.

Obama has heroically, foolhardily, quixotically tried to make things work for both sides — the super-rich and the people who are genuinely repelled by the world of the super-rich. They can both live on this planet. Not according to Romney, though, who’s repeatedly said, over and over, “I believe everyone should live this way.” This statement is usually made standing on someone’s private tennis court.

Well, everyone can’t have a private tennis court. Obama understands this. Romney recoils from this. Obama wants to make a world in which every strata can live, happily, on their own terms. In recoiling from the gorgeous messiness of America, Romney is building a scrubbed-clean, fenced-off citadel, surrounded by a worker dorm shantytown.

I’m voting for Obama. I’m voting for the messiness.

*******

Readers: In case you haven’t guessed, I’m voting for Obama too. :) What say you?

Lisa: :) :(

Rocky: Thanks for posting. It is obvious we are not going to know about Romney’s tax plan until after the fact. He is just going to be full of surprises if he makes it into the presidency.

Gretta: And there are plenty of them out there.

Samari: It is truly amazing what some women have to endure just to live their lives. It too makes me sick.

Durar: You said it. Life would be very different for the men if women had rights. Now they have  nothing to fear…that was until this girl had had enough.

Fida: I cannot imagine a family thinking of choosing to murder their child over the act of taking on the perp. But I don’t doubt more than one family has thought of this in the same insane situation. I’m happy you were able to flee. I HOPE life is going well for you.

Beverly: Nicely said.

Thanks Larry.

Howie: Nice to see you back.

Vera: Another sick sad story. I could say more but after reading the comments it looks like the other readers pretty much covered it all.

I’m done for the day. Blog me

Added 9:31 AM:  The one thing about vacations is you lose track of the time and the date. A good thing most of the time except when you don’t want to. :)  I just realized what day it is today. My heart, thoughts and love go out to the families of 9/11.

Peacin’ out.

Are You Better Off Today…?

Yes!!

Good morning!

How Democrats Should Respond to the ‘Better Off’ Question

Three top Obama surrogates dropped the ball over the weekend when they seemed unable to provide a simple answer to various versions of the old Ronald Reagan question, “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?”

How To Answer The Question

The answer to the “better off” question should have been “Yes” without equivocation. Four years ago, America was bogged down in two costly and deadly wars, the economy was losing 800,000 jobs a month, the stock market had crashed, Wall Street had to be rescued with a $700 billion bailout, the auto industry was on the verge of collapse, and color-coded terror alerts reminded us of the lingering threat of Osama Bin Laden.

Under President Obama, we’ve ended the war in Iraq, created 4.5 million new jobs, doubled the Dow Jones Industrial Average, generated record profits for the auto industry, and taken out Osama Bin Laden. And that’s to say nothing of health care reform, financial reform, repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and hundreds of other major accomplishments from this administration.

If Democrats can’t remember this history and fail to repeat it every day until November 6, they don’t deserve to win re-election. Sure, America hasn’t solved all its problems in four years, but Democrats have to stop apologizing for not being perfect and start letting people know what they’ve actually done. If Americans don’t share that sense of accomplishment in the polls right now, Democrats have only themselves to blame for failing to articulate it. The way to change the polls is by spreading the gospel of the truth.

The best teacher of this lesson may be Reagan himself. Remember, Reagan’s famous “better off” question helped him defeat Jimmy Carter in 1980 when unemployment stood at 7.5 percent. But four years later, when unemployment had climbed to 8.3 percent, the same level where it stands today, President Reagan had the audacity to declare that “America is back, standing tall” in his January 1984 State of the Union address. It was “morning in America,” we were told that year.

If only Democrats had Reagan’s chutzpah.

How To Turn The Question Around

Reagan’s “better off” question essentially reversed two generations of progressive government philosophy that helped redistribute wealth for the common good.

It was John F. Kennedy who famously encouraged Americans to think beyond self-interest. “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country,” he said in his 1961 Inaugural Address.

Kennedy’s exhortation to community service over selfishness surely seemed virtuous in his time. But today’s Republicans would simply call its socialism. Unless Democrats learn to fight back.

In the 1930s, government helped to modernize America by building the Golden Gate Bridge and Hoover Dam and providing electricity to rural communities that had been hurt by the Great Depression. In the 1940s, after the nation rallied to win World War II, government provided college education and home ownership to veterans with the G.I. bill. In the 1950s, government invested billions of dollars to connect faraway parts of the country by building an elaborate interstate highway system. In the 1960s, America raced to space and to the moon by investing public funds in NASA. In the 1970s, government cracked down on environmental pollution by expanding the Clean Air Act and enacting the Clean Water Act, massive new regulations passed by a Democratic Congress and signed by a Republican president.

All these accomplishments were financed by a progressive tax policy supported by both Democrat and Republican presidents — including Eisenhower and Nixon — in which the top tax rate ranged from 70 to 90 percent, more than double today’s tax rate under President Obama.

But the massive government projects from the 1930s to the 1970s would become vilified in Reagan’s selfish and short-sighted America of the 1980s, and that anti-government legacy still endures in the public consciousness.

That’s why Democrats should use their convention this week not just to sell Barack Obama or to bash Mitt Romney. They should articulate, explain, and defend their vision of government itself.

Instead of asking us if we individuals are better off from one election cycle to another, it’s time for leaders to ask if America is better off by one party’s policies or another. While decades of anti-government individualism have made a few people fabulously wealthy, it’s also left America with growing income inequality and stagnant wages. Conservative policies may help a few people get rich, but progressive policies enable millions to join the middle class.

Yesterday on Labor Day, Vice President Joe Biden finally gave a speech that answered the “better off” question the way every Democrat should respond for the next two months. “America is better off today than they left us when they left,” he told a cheering crowd, thus answering the question but also reminding voters where we were four years ago under the destructive policies of George W. Bush.

That’s the short-term answer, but the long-term answer requires us to re-focus the question. Ultimately, if liberalism is to survive and succeed, liberals and progressives must not be afraid to define and defend it publicly, repeatedly, and unapologetically to the American people.

******

Readers: Okay…so do we all know what to say now? I certainly do. And I can even add to that: Being where I am this morning, waking up to the sound of the ocean, steps away from my bedroom, I can definitely say I am better off today than I was at least three days ago. :) Im blessed and so grateful. Life just keeps getting better and better. I HOPE so for all of you as well! Care to share? Blog me.

I’ll try and connect and respond tomorrow. Have a beautiful Monday!

Peace baby…

The Democratic Convention: Thoughts Of Day Three

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 7th September 2012

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

Last night I watched our president give his speech. I am usually moved and inspired by what he says because I truly believe in the president…that he is a fair minded supporter of all the American people, wanting what is best for all. But last night I had a different feeling, and it was very different than in 2008. It had nothing to do with my belief and trust in the president – It wasn’t one without HOPE, but certainly desperation showed its face. It wasn’t that I was feeling a desperateness come from him – I wasn’t – no he was as usual, his cool self.

It was me that was feeling desperate. I realize I am contradicting myself – How can one have HOPE and yet still feel desperate? I have so much HOPE and faith in what our president can do, if he gets the opportunity. I feel like the life of our country is in his hands. And yet, it is really in ours and that is where I become desperate.

I was speaking to a friend of mine the other day who is not racist, but clearly is voting for Romney. No matter what I say about Obama’s support of women and Romney’s lack of, the many lives that the Affordable Care Act will save, and Romney’s goal to repeal it, etc., …she is still voting repub.

How many other women are like my girlfriend? I kept thinking of what America and this world would be like if he wasn’t our president…what it would be like if he didn’t have the opportunity for four more years. I felt sick to my stomach.

My desperation comes when I think of how the women in this country can make the difference between winning and losing. And it isn’t just winning or losing the presidency. It is so much more. It is winning/keeping or losing our rights. It is winning/keeping or losing our lives, etc. In my opinion, there is no choice between the two presidential candidates…and what I mean by that is that there is only one choice.  Why it is so difficult for some women to see, is what brings out the desperateness in me. Obama can only be great for this country if we vote for him. Our fate is in our own hands.

And that is pretty much what I got from Obama’s speech last night:

“When all is said and done, when you pick up that ballot to vote, you will face the clearest choice of any time in a generation. Over the next few years, big decisions will be made in Washington, on jobs, the economy; taxes and deficits; energy, education; war and peace, decisions that will have a huge impact on our lives and our children’s lives for decades to come. And on every issue, the choice you face won’t be just between two candidates or two parties. It will be a choice between two different paths for America.”

He couldn’t have made it more clear. We all know that the country is in a much better place than it was 4 years ago. We all know the wonderful things that Obama has accomplished thus far, and we all know what he is capable of should he get 4 more years with coattails.

What we don’t know is how bad off the country will be if Romney is president. And that is what scares me. I am HOPEing that I am not alone. I am HOPEing that all of you are scared too…scared so much that you too will see that the fate of our country is in our hands…that there is only one choice.

As desperate as I am feeling this morning, I have HOPE that women…the American people will come together as citizens, come to their senses, and do what is best for all.

In the words of President Obama:

“We also believe in something called citizenship — a word at the very heart of our founding, at the very essence of our democracy; the idea that this country only works when we accept certain obligations to one another, and to future generations.

“We believe that when a CEO pays his autoworkers enough to buy the cars that they build, the whole company does better.

“We believe that when a family can no longer be tricked into signing a mortgage they can’t afford, that family is protected, but so is the value of other people’s homes, and so is the entire economy.

“We believe the little girl who’s offered an escape from poverty by a great teacher or a grant for college could become the next Steve Jobs, or the scientist who cures cancer, or the President of the United States, and it’s in our power to give her that chance.

“We know that churches and charities can often make more of a difference than a poverty program alone. We don’t want handouts for people who refuse to help themselves, and we certainly don’t want bailouts for banks that break the rules. We don’t think the government can solve all our problems. But we don’t think that the government is the source of all our problems, any more than are welfare recipients, or corporations, or unions, or immigrants, or gays, or any other group we’re told to blame for our troubles.

“Because America, we understand that this democracy is ours…. As citizens, we understand that America is not about what can be done for us. It’s about what can be done by us, together, through the hard and frustrating but necessary work of self-government.”

The Democratic Convention: Thoughts Of Day Two

Good morning!

Blog Business:

I am sorry for the late post but I had to deal with some business first. I had a slight panic this morning when I went to read my blog and it was not available. When I clicked on my blog in the Bookmarks Bar, the url changed from my blog address to basically “my host server/suspended”. After a quick phone call and a very long wait, I was informed that my blog had been hacked into from the back end. Thankfully it was easily solved and precautions were put into place.

However to protect my readers and your personal information, I suggest that anyone who writes in on my blog to go in and change your master password on your computer. Use letters, numbers, and symbols for your password to give you maximum protection. You can bet I will be doing the same.

Okay, business done. Any questions, please ask.

Like many of you I am sure, you all watched the Democratic convention last night. And we all saw Clinton, Bill, blast the repubs. Okay so it was way longer than planned but I was mesmerized by his words. Were you? Simple said, his speech was exceptional. And I especially liked when he spoke exposing the lies and obstruction of the greedy ‘ol party.

It just shows us once again, that whatever needs to be said to get the black man out of office will be said by the repubs. Thank you Bill Clinton for taking the time to respond with such eloquence, and support our beloved president.

I am so sick of the repubs and their lies and excuses. Whatever they want to use they will use. Whatever logic they want to throw at us. Whatever need to be done will be attempted. It’s all about race. Everything else we hear is bull.

The republicans and the pundits keep saying the same same thing over and over: “We need a businessman in office.” Not once has these words ever been spoken before. Not once has there ever been a businessman running our country. We never elected one before. Not one. But now that there is a black man running our country, the pundits, say we need a businessman, to be president. Now people can use the excuse, “We aren’t going to not vote for him because he isn’t white, we aren’t going to vote for him because he isn’t a businessman. ” Another line of BS.

Before they would say, “We’re voting for him because he is the more “serious evangelical”. But Obama is evangelical, so now religion doesn’t matter.

Before they wanted a better military president. We want McCain. Obama has proved that he is, so now that doesn’t matter anymore.

Before, they wanted foreign experience. McCain had foreign experience. Obama didn’t have any. We aren’t going to not vote for him because he isn’t white, we aren’t going to vote for him because he has no foreign experience. But now, guess what? That doesn’t matter; they want Romney/Ryan who have no foreign experience. Now, it’s no longer important to have foreign experience.

Before, it was okay if you didn’t like the president, as long as you respected the office. Now that Obama is in office, the office doesn’t matter anymore. There is no respect. Look at all the disrespect toward Obama, the criticism. But if a white president got back into office, believe me they’d be going back to “Let’s respect the office”. The same announcers and pundits who get away with everything now will start saying “Let’s have respect for the office”, if a white man gets back into office.

Remember…Whatever they want to use they will use. Whatever logic they want to throw at us. Whatever need to be done will be attempted. It’s all about race. Everything else we hear is bull.

Mike, TM: No doubt this is but one of the many surprises they have for Obama. Thanks for telling us. I don’t look forward to learning more of their sick surprises, but knowing, so we can prepare, is much better than being left in the dark, so thank you.

Cynthia: Speaking of obstructionism and the agreement you spoke of. It was 15 white guys who made that agreement to let the country go down. They didn’t bring any white women in – just 15 white men. They plotted it and set it up and made the senate and the house follow suit – kill any plan the president has to help the economy. They did.

Why is nobody talking about an entire political party who got together and agreed to sabotage the nation  in order to win the White House back 4 years later? In other words, the plan was, for 4 years we are going to screw this country economically so bad, and they did it. But why is no one talking about it?!

Instead everyone wants to talk about Obama taking us into socialism. Wha’at? It is incredible to me that an entire party agreed to this sabotage plan, followed through with it, and continues to do everything in their power to make it further happen, until they get back into office, and no one is talking about it. I realize I am repeating myself, but it needs to be said over and over because it is just insane.

Readers: How I wish Obama would talk about this tonight. I know it would be a big move but my opinion is he needs to make it public, because there are so many who don’t know this and who need to know.  To me that would give him the presidency. If I was a voting republican and I heard that 15 white men had planned to sabotage my country, the caring, logical thing would be to immediately change and vote for Obama. I’d be crazy not to. To put in power those who care more about their own greed and self interest than the betterment of the country would be insane.

But the media knows about this and is not talking about it as if it is no big deal. But it is a big deal, it is true. If the media doesn’t have the balls to address this, I HOPE Obama does. The repubs are bringing out anything and everything to ruin our country and take back the White House. Its our time to respond and make sure that they don’t.

Here is something wonderful in prep for Obama’s speech tonight. From Maddow’s blog:

In advance of President Obama’s convention speech tonight, his re-election campaign unveiled a new video this morning called “Promises Kept.” It features promises from his speech four years ago, highlighting Obama’s follow-through.

I love it.

The Democratic Convention: Thoughts Of Day One

Good morning!

I first have to give kudos to the first Lady, Michelle Obama. I watched her speech last night and I too was teary eyed, stunned and speechless. She captivated me, inspired me, left me in awe. When the First Lady said “Being president doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are“, both my mother and I said. “Ooh that is good”. I think it was the best line in her speech because the statement itself is so illuminating.

As president Obama had mentioned, I imagined him sitting at home with his girls watching his beautiful, intelligent, passionate wife, his woman, the love of his life, proud with tears in his eyes and deep love for her in his heart and soul.

I was moved by the thought of their love and commitment to each other, their children, and no doubt to our beloved country, wanting and working toward what is best for all. I couldn’t be more proud to witness her grace and greatness. If I haven’t said it before and even if I have, FLOTUS is a Wonderful Woman Of The World.

And yes, the First Lady was simply stunning in her dress.

So what’s up for today? I too saw the headliner of the Huff Po. And although the main title was terrible, (I agree with you Jackie - It is the truth that is “vicious” – since when is telling the truth “vicious”?) what was written is well worth the repeat. So I am going to do just that here:

Mitt Romney’s Swiss Bank Account Hammered By Democratic Convention Speakers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mitt Romney’s Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island investments were hot topics on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, with several leading Democrats hammering the Republican presidential candidate about them in their speeches.

“Mitt Romney has so little economic patriotism that even his money needs a passport,” charged former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland in his fiery speech Tuesday night. “It summers on the beaches of the Cayman Islands and winters on the slopes of the Swiss Alps. In Matthew, chapter 6, verse 21, the scriptures teach us that where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. My friends, any man who aspires to be our president should keep both his treasure and his heart in the United States of America. And it’s well past time for Mitt Romney to come clean with the American people.”

Romney previously had a Swiss bank account and has millions invested in funds based in the Cayman Islands.

“Instead of safeguarding our seniors, Romney and Ryan would end the guarantee of Medicare and replace it with a voucher in order to give bigger tax breaks to billionaires,” said Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley. “Instead of investing in America, they hide their money in Swiss bank accounts and ship our jobs to China. Swiss bank accounts never built an American bridge. Swiss bank accounts don’t put cops on the beat or teachers in our classrooms. Swiss bank accounts never created American jobs!”

“Governor Romney, just because you bank against the United States of America doesn’t mean the rest of us are willing to sell her out,” O’Malley said. “We are Americans.”

Women’s rights advocate Lilly Ledbetter also joined in, noting that women still earn just 77 cents for every dollar men make.

“Maybe 23 cents doesn’t sound like a lot to someone with a Swiss bank account, Cayman Island Investments and an IRA worth tens of millions of dollars,” Ledbetter said. “But Governor Romney, when we lose 23 cents every hour, every day, every paycheck, every job, over our entire lives, what we lose can’t just be measured in dollars.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) continued his attacks on Romney for his refusal to release his more information on his taxes. Romney has released his 2010 tax returns and an estimate for 2011, although he has promised to disclose his 2011 return this fall. He has refused to follow the example of his father and release 12 years of his tax information to the public.

“Never in modern American history has a presidential candidate tried so hard to hide himself from the people he hopes to serve,” Reid said during his speech at the convention. “When you look at the one tax return he has released, it’s obvious why. It’s obvious why there’s only been one. We learned that he pays a lower tax rate than middle class families. We learned he chose Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Islands tax shelters over American institutions. And we can only imagine what new secrets would be revealed if he showed the American people a dozen years of tax returns — like his father did.”
