Democratic Convention Kicks Off Today

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 4th September 2012

Good morning!

I HOPE everyone had a good long weekend and you heeded my advice and took the day off.

I woke up this morning and in still my sleepy state the Democratic convention was on my mind. Wha’at? Okay, there has to be something slightly wrong with me waking up and the first thing on my mind is politics. Oh…the ooze of it just doesn’t stop these days. If you had talked to me 5 years ago, waking up with politics on my mind, would’ve made me think I was still sleeping and having a nightmare. But today it makes me smile. Well…sort of.

And then as I do every morning, I slip out of bed, shimmy into something cozy, grab my computer and head to the kitchen where the sun graces a small round table, and I plop myself down to read. The headline of the Huff Po is: RYAN GOES REVISIONIST: I WASN’T BLAMING OBAMA FOR GM PLANT CLOSURE

Oh yes, the ol, “I didn’t say that, I didn’t mean that” lie. Unfortunately for Ryan, his tossing of word salads with fact-free dressing has caught up with him. His new name? Lyin’ Ryan. Perfect since he is a LSOS member.

You know what I am sick of is slippery writing. Writing that tries to make it easy for candidates to come back and lie, saying that what was said was not what was said or meant. It allows someone to come back and lie, and say that they meant to say this…blah blah blah, if necessary.

If you are so concerned about getting it right…if you are so worried that people will not misconstrue what you are saying…if you are so caring about getting your clear message out, then articulate yourself in a way that does that, or fire your speech writer, because he is doing a lousy job of writing your speech and doing just that. And guess what? With a clear intentional message you won’t have to come back and CYA (cover your ass) with more lies.

But of course that is not the intention of many of the candidates and people in office, and most especially the republican candidates etc., who will stoop to unknown depths to make sure that this November the White House is white washed. No, they build their speeches peppered with lies and slippery sentences, HOPEing and banking on that their listeners will hear what they intend for them to hear: Lies as truths.

Their motto is let’s just blame those not responsible and lie about all we can get away with. And hey, if someone calls them on it, well then, this is what you say to CYA. A good political speech writer knows this and carefully concocts speeches this way. I call it slippery writing because the way it is written allows you to slip your way to safety if it works, or slip your way into CYA with more lies.

Unfortunately for Ryan, he got busted…so you know which way he is slipping.

Enough about Ryan. I just realized Obama is speaking right now. Here it is live:

Democratic Convention Kicks Off In Charlotte

By CALVIN WOODWARD AND JULIE PACE, ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Four years later Democrats have gathered again, this time in support of a president who carries the power and the burden of incumbency, both in evidence as the opening gavel is struck at the Democratic National Convention.

President Barack Obama demonstrated the power Monday in a convention-eve visit to hurricane-stricken lands in Louisiana, offering aid and empathy. His burden is a ragged economy that is at the core of the hotly competitive contest with Republican Mitt Romney.

Michelle Obama’s speech Tuesday night is an early highlight of a three-day schedule that has drawn thousands of delegates to a state Obama narrowly carried in 2008. Although Obama no longer is the fresh-faced newbie who leveraged a short Senate career into an audacious run for the nation’s highest office, he still can excite partisans, and Democrats were counting on massive numbers to pack a stadium for his speech later in the week.

If hurricanes have no politics, the aftermath does. Obama’s visit to stricken St. John the Baptist Parish outside New Orleans after a spirited Labor Day rally in battleground Ohio demonstrated, if in muted form, the partisan divide that cleaves the presidential campaign.

Obama emphasized the government’s determination to lend a strong helping hand. Romney focused on neighbor helping neighbor in his visit days earlier, even though both support a mix of emergency aid from the taxpayer and volunteerism in response to natural disasters.

“We’re here to help,” Obama told residents during a brief tour Monday, going from lawn to lawn in a neighborhood of brick homes and front yards loaded with soggy but orderly piles of debris, the floodwaters receded. He told another family of the steps officials were taking to address the damage, adding, “I promise you that now that I’ve been here, they’re going to make sure that they do it right.”

On convention eve, Democrats released a party platform for ratification Tuesday that echoes Obama’s call for higher taxes on the wealthy and reflects his shift on gay marriage by supporting it explicitly.

In a nod to dissenters on gay marriage, the platform expresses support for “the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference.”

As with the deeply conservative Republican platform, not all of which Romney endorses, nothing binds Obama to the specifics of the party’s manifesto.

The president rallies in Virginia on Tuesday before joining the convention a day later. With flourishes but no suspense, Democrats will march through the roll call of states renominating Obama for president and Joe Biden for vice president on Wednesday.

That’s also when the convention hears from Bill Clinton, whose 1990s presidency is being trumpeted by Democrats as the last great period of economic growth and balanced budgets – a further redemption of sorts, at least from his party, for a leader who survived impeachment over sexual scandal.

In a USA Today interview, Obama accused Republicans of building their campaign around a “fictional Barack Obama” by wholly misrepresenting his positions and words. He singled out Romney’s claim, widely debunked, that the Obama administration stripped a work requirement out of federal welfare laws.

“Just Noticing”: Observations Of A Blogger

Good morning!

“just noticing…”

Melissa Harris-Perry of MSNBC has a voice.

Check it out:

Melissa Harris-Perry Erupts At Guest: ‘I’m Sick Of The Idea That Being Wealthy Is Risky’ (VIDEO)

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Melissa Harris-Perry erupted at a guest on her show Saturday morning during a discussion on welfare.

Harris-Perry launched a discussion based on a new book titled “Why Americans Hate Welfare” by Princeton professor Martin Gilens.

According to Harris-Perry, the book examines public opinion surveys that found that Americans approve “spending for the social good,” but oppose that spending when it’s labeled as welfare.

Harris-Perry wondered how this could be the case. “The answer, according to Gilens…[is] that Americans hate welfare because media, at the behest of conservative politicians, have relentlessly linked welfare with black people, and have hammered home the idea that welfare recipients are undeserving.”

Harris-Perry contrasted this theory with Mitt Romney’s GOP convention speech on Thursday, in which the Republican presidential candidate said that Americans deserve better.

“It does feel to me [that] part of the American story is class mobility. If there is no class mobility, we are not America, right?..And data now shows that in our current moment, class mobility is very low,” Harris-Perry said. “I just feel like, from the bottom, you have to be able to say, ‘I deserve the ability for class mobility.’”

Financial expert Monica Mehta, who was a guest on Harris-Perry’s show, interjected that class mobility is “enabled by taking risk.”

Harris-Perry immediately interrupted her and demanded, “What is riskier than living poor in America? Seriously?” After slamming her hand on the table, she continued:

What in the world is riskier than being a poor person in America? I live in a neighborhood where people are shot on my street corner. I live in a neighborhood where people have to figure out how to get their kid into school because maybe it will be a good school and maybe it won’t. I’m sick of the idea that being wealthy is risky. No, there’s a huge safety net, that whenever you fail, we’ll catch you, and catch you, and catch you. Being poor is what is risky. We have to create a safety net for poor people and when we won’t because they happen to look different from us, it is the pervasive ugliness. We cannot do that.

During last week’s program, Melissa Harris-Perry gave viewers an inside look into her New Orleans neighborhood. Last month, Harris-Perry and her husband closed on the purchase of a home that had been damaged and abandoned after Hurricane Katrina.

Harris-Perry described the property as a site of crime in her neighborhood, so her goal was to rebuild the home and contribute to the safety and security of the community. Harris-Perry called the home “just a physical thing” but also a “symbol of hope.”

Just a few days after the segment aired on her MSNBC show, Harris-Perry’s new home was destroyed by Hurricane Isaac. “House was vacant except for my dreams,” she tweeted.

Watch the clash in the clip above, which comes at roughly 8 minutes into the video.

Pregnancy From Rape Similar To ‘Having A Baby Out Of Wedlock’

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 1st September 2012

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

I know I keep bringing up this subject. But what can I say, it is a constant reminder that we are close to losing our rights unless we women take strong action and support each other.

Another GOP candidate, Tom Smith, downplays the seriousness of rape. When I read comments such as the one below, it just really irks me. I am so tired of men trying to control women’s bodies, and then make light of rape, acting as if it is no big deal, no major violation, that we can wish away the pregnancy..and if not, just deal with it and have the baby.

I mean really there is no difference…pregnancy from rape is similar to having a baby out of wedlock, right? It’s so easy for a man to say such crap off the top of his head because he doesn’t have to worry about being raped, nor ever worry about ever getting pregnant and having to decide what to do, or worry about somebody telling him what to do, controlling his choices.  And please don’t write me and say, “Men get raped too”. You know my views on that.

If men are not trying to control what we do with our bodies, the choices that we want to make, then they are trying to take control of our bodies, by sexually assaulting and raping us.

Enough already.

Tom Smith, GOP Senate Candidate: Pregnancy From Rape Similar To ‘Having A Baby Out Of Wedlock

Trying to distance himself from the “legitimate rape” comment that Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) made last week, Pennsylvania Senate candidate Tom Smith (R) stirred up further controversy by comparing a pregnancy caused by rape to “having a baby out of wedlock.”

Smith said Monday at the Pennsylvania Press Club that although he condemns Akin’s comment, he agrees with Akin that abortion should be banned without any exceptions, including for rape and incest victims. Pressed by a reporter on how he would handle a daughter or granddaughter becoming pregnant as a result of rape, Smith said he had already “lived something similar to that” in his family.

“She chose life, and I commend her for that,” he said. “She knew my views. But, fortunately for me, I didn’t have to … she chose the way I thought. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t rape.”

When a reporter asked Smith to clarify what kind of situation was similar to becoming pregnant from rape, the candidate responded, “Having a baby out of wedlock.”

He added, “Put yourself in a father’s position. Yes, it is similar.”

Smith’s comment comes at an inconvenient time for Republicans, who have been scrambling to distract voters from the firestorm of controversy over Akin’s comment last week. Addressing the subject of an abortion exception for rape victims, Akin said that victims of “legitimate rape” rarely become pregnant because “the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down.”

Smith, who is challenging incumbent Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) in the November election, told reporters that he does not agree with Akin’s remark at all. “He should have never said anything like that,” Smith said.

UPDATE: 8:45 p.m. –

Megan Piwowar, a spokeswoman for Smith, clarified on Monday evening that the candidate’s comments were misunderstood and that the “out of wedlock” pregnancy in his family was not his daughter’s.

“Tom Smith is committed to protecting the sanctity of life and believes it begins at conception,” she said in a statement. “While his answers to some of the questions he faced at the Pennsylvania Press club may have been less than artful, at no time did he draw the comparison that some have inferred. When questioned if he was drawing that comparison, Tom’s answer was clear, ‘no, no, no.’ Tom was speaking to the difficult decision faced by his family, not the nature of his daughters conception.”

*******

Readers: I know that I keep saying this but I just can’t help it. I especially say this to women who can’t seem to get it, “The choices you make over your body are your choices. Vote to have a choice. Do what you want to do with your body and let me do what I want to do with mine. You don’t believe in abortion? Fine. Have all the babies you want. But allow me to make my own choices over my own body. The men aren’t going to change. Be smart, take control – Support women in their right to choose. If we don’t do it now we may never have another opportunity.”

This election year, no doubt, is the most important election, in my opinion, to date. Not only for women but for this country and the world. If you think anything different, you are in for a rude awakening.

I HOPE everyone is enjoying the beginning of the long Labor Day weekend!

Peace, Love, and Freedom of Choice

Good morning!

So it looks like many of you watched the last evening of the RNC. All I can say is that I was sickened and disturbed by Eastwood’s speech last night as he spoke to the empty chair, whom he pretended was filled by Obama.  For him to act as if our president would say words to him, such as “Fuck yourself”, was so off base…so out of touch when it comes to knowing our president.  Obama would never speak that way – he’s a gentleman, a man who chooses his words carefully and diplomatically, and would never lose his cool when it comes to addressing characters such as Eastwood.

Eastwood was a joke. I agree with Maddow, “It was bizarre”. The big hook should’ve come out, grabbed him, and dragged him off stage. Yes /SB, Eastwood’s guest appearance was a definite “surprise”, and one that will never be forgotten.

Harrietta:  I feel the same way. Romney, to me, is still not connecting with anyone. Yes, his speech was probably the best he has given but that doesn’t make it a great speech – except maybe for him, but not when it comes to great speeches in general. And certainly not “brilliant”. There was nothing inspiring about his speech. And I have no problem giving kudos where it is deserved even if I and not fond of the person. But Romney didn’t do it for me. Probably because he is such an LSOS, I can’t see past that fact. And for some reason, I always notice that whenever I watch him, his eyes sometimes gets that pansy glazed over look like he’s dreaming or spacing out.

And Lies? Yep, we all know Romney is a LSOS. He says that he had hoped when Obama took office he would succeed, but we all know that is a lie. No republican wanted him to succeed and Romney is no different. Obama did succeed in many things, more than any past president, but they will never admit that it took a black man to do many great things for all in this country.

Look, that is why they have to make up so many lies so the stupid ones will believe and vote for Romney. And if it wasn’t for the party of no, Obama would’ve been even more successful in his agenda and our country would be that much better off. But no, whatever they needed to do to get Obama out they are going to do, no matter what the consequences are for our country. And if Obama isn’t re-elected we will find out just how bad it will be.

“Now is the moment when we can stand up and say, ‘I’m an American. I make my destiny. And we deserve better. My children deserve better. My family deserves better. My country deserves better!’” Romney said.

Another lie. How can I make my own destiny, when for women, you want to control our bodies and take away our choices? Women don’t have control over their future when women are being told what they can and cannot do….with their bodies…with their unborn. My plans for my future would get tossed into the garbage, if I got pregnant and didn’t want the baby, under your administration.

Notice how he keeps saying “my”? My children…My family, My Country. What happened to “The country deserves better?  All of our children deserve better?…

If he’s speaking in terms of “My”, you can be rest assured he is someone only concerned about me and mine. Everything else he says, every promise he makes to get you to vote for him, is most likely a lie.

And Romney adds:

“This president cannot tell us that you’re better off today than when he took office.”

Well, I guess he’s not talking to all of those people who not only would’ve lost their health benefits, but their lives too. I’d say being alive than dead is better off wouldn’t you? But he’s not thinking of anyone but himself. Once again, he and his family can afford high health costs so why bother helping those that can’t. You can kiss the Affordable Care Act goodbye if Romney wins, and for those about to lose your health care, you can kiss your family goodbye too.

Linora: I have had similar feelings about Matthews for awhile now. Although his rant the other night I have to give applauds to, his comments last night left me with those same same similar feelings again.

Paul: Thanks for raising those stats again. I posted them months ago but it is a good reminder for readers who just don’t know the real truth when it comes to welfare and who is really on it.

Michelle Obama: Thanks for posting this. I will do what I can.

Readers: If you’ve waited all year and haven’t made a donation to the Obama administration, now is the time, like /SB, to give what you can. Thank you.

PS: A major victory in Ohio today. The Federal Court restores early voting in Ohio. A big Thank you goes out to Obama. Another action that ends in success proving that once again he is the president that truly cares about all of the American people.

I’m done. It’s Friday…start flapping.

Peace & Love….

LSOS Ryan Lies Again…And Again…And Again…

Good morning!

It’s rare that I post something that is the headliner on the Huff Po but I couldn’t help it this time. You all know what I’m talking about since there is chatter on my blog about it already. Lies and LSOSs like Ryan need to be exposed.

Paul Ryan Address: Convention Speech Built On Demonstrably Misleading Assertions

TAMPA, Fla. – Paul Ryan pledged Wednesday that if he and his running mate Mitt Romney were elected president, they would usher in an ethic of responsibility. The Wisconsin congressman and GOP vice presidential candidate repeatedly chided President Barack Obama for blaming the jobs and housing crises on his predecessor, saying that his habit of “forever shifting blame to the last administration, is getting old. The man assumed office almost four years ago -– isn’t it about time he assumed responsibility?”

Ryan then noted that Obama, while campaigning for president, promised that a GM plant in Wisconsin would not shut down. “That plant didn’t last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that’s how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight,” Ryan said.

Except Obama didn’t promise that. And the plant closed in December 2008 — while George W. Bush was president.

It was just one of several striking and demonstrably misleading elements of Ryan’s much-anticipated acceptance speech. And it comes just days after Romney pollster Neil Newhouse warned, defending the campaign’s demonstrably false ads claiming Obama removed work requirements from welfare, “We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers.”

Ryan, for his part, slammed the president for not supporting a deficit commission report without mentioning that he himself had voted against it, helping to kill it.

He also made a cornerstone of his argument the claim that Obama “funneled” $716 billion out of Medicare to pay for Obamacare. But he didn’t mention that his own budget plan relies on those very same savings.

Ryan also put responsibility for Standard & Poor’s downgrade of U.S. government debt at Obama’s doorstep. But he didn’t mention that S&P itself, in explaining its downgrade, referred to the debt ceiling standoff. That process of raising the debt ceiling was only politicized in the last Congress, driven by House Republicans, led in the charge by Paul Ryan.

The credit rater also said it worried that Republicans would never agree to tax increases. “We have changed our assumption on [revenue] because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues,” S&P wrote.

Jodie Layton, a convention goer from Utah watching the Ryan speech, said she was blown away by the vice presidential candidate. But she said she was surprised to hear that after his speech about taking responsibility, he’d pinned a Bush-era plant closing on Obama.

“It closed in December 2008?” she asked, making sure she heard a HuffPost reporter’s question right. After a long pause, she said, “It’s happening a lot on both sides. It’s to be expected.”

Ryan has referenced the GM plant before, and his attack was debunked by theDetroit News, which called it inaccurate. “In fact, Obama made no such promise and the plant halted production in December 2008, when President George W. Bush was in office,” Detroit News reporter David Sherpardson wrote earlier this month. “Obama did speak at the plant in February 2008, and suggested that a government partnership with automakers could keep the plant open, but made no promises as Ryan suggested.”

After the speech, CNN’s political commentators focused mostly on Ryan’s misstatements, demonstrating the degree to which they were evident.

Top Obama adviser David Axelrod jumped on the GM factory claim. “Again, Ryan blames Obama for a GM plant that closed under Bush. But then, they did say they wouldn’t ‘let fact checkers get in the way.’”

Ryan, however, appears to have made the calculation that the misleading won’t hurt him with voters. He might be right. CNN’s David Gergen, while acknowledging some “misstatements” in Ryan’s address, suggested that pundits focus elsewhere. “But let’s not forget that this was a speech about big ideas,” he told his audience.

*R*Y*A*N*L*S*O*S*

Readers: Repubs are banking on, and HOPEing that if the lies are told over and over again, people will see it as the truth. I am HOPEing that if we expose these LSOSs over and over again, people will come to their senses and see the real truth.

Zen Lill: That is a satirical site, hence the write is not real…but certainly hilarious!

Lucy: That is one disgusting story. I wish I could say I am surprised at those hideous remarks and actions, but I am not.

Peace out.
