GOP: Same Same

Good morning!

New GOP = Old GOP

Feb 5, 2013 | By ThinkProgress War Room

It’s The Policies, Stupid

In the wake of a blowout at the polls (save for in their gerrymandered U.S. House seats) last November, Republican leaders have engaged in much soul-searching about the failings of their party. They seem to have reached an interesting conclusion: their party’s deep unpopularity has absolutely nothing to do with their party’s deeply unpopular policies such as calling for more tax cuts for the wealthy and gutting popular programs like Medicare.

Republicans have instead decided that they just need better messaging about their policies. To that end, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R) gave just the latest in a series of speeches attempting to “rebrand” the GOP. ThinkProgress’ Igor Volsky and Pat Garafalo listened to today’s speech so you don’t have to. Unsurprisingly, they found that the new, “softer” GOP is more or less the same as the old GOP. Here’s eight reasons why:

1) SCHOOL FUNDING: “Imagine if we were to try and move in this direction with federal funding. Allow the money we currently spend to actually follow individual children. Students, including those without a lot of money or those with special needs, would be able to access the best available school, not just the failing school they are assigned to.” This is a redux of Mitt Romney’s school funding plan, which while a decent idea in theory, wouldn’t be possible alongside the House GOP budget’s call for $2.7 billion in cutsto spending for disadvantaged students. As The Nation’s Dana Goldstein explained, this plan calls for shuffling funding “without guaranteeing the federal funding or regulatory support necessary to ensure quality.”

2) HIGHER EDUCATION: “Over the course of this Congress, we will also work to reform our student aid process to give students a financial incentive to finish their studies sooner. We will encourage entrepreneurship in higher education, including for-profit schools.” The House Republican budget would eliminate Pell Grants for more than one million students. Many for-profit schools, meanwhile, take huge amounts of taxpayer money while leaving students burdened with debt and facing bleak job prospects. Their focus is corporate profitability, not education, and they useaggressive marketing tactics to target vulnerable students.

3) WORKING MOTHERS: “Federal laws dating back to the 1930s make it harder for parents who hold hourly jobs to balance the demands of work and home. An hourly employee cannot convert previous overtime into future comp-time or flex-time…Imagine if we simply chose to give all employees and employers this option. A working mom could work overtime this month and use it as time off next month without having to worry about whether she’ll be able to take home enough money to pay the rent.” Cantor’s proposal would do far less good than simply ensuring that all workers have access to paid sick leave and paid maternity leave. The U.S. is currently the only developed country with no paid sick leave policy and one of just threewithout required paid maternity leave.

4) TAX REFORM: “Loopholes and gimmicks benefitting those who’ve come to know how to work the system in Washington, are no more defensible than the path of wasteful and irresponsible spending we’ve been on for decades. Working families should come first. Everyone agrees a fairer, simpler tax code would give us all more time.” Republicans pay lots of lip service to tax reform, but want to raise no new revenues through the closing of loopholes and deductions, despite the fact that the deficit reduction implemented since 2011 has comeoverwhelmingly via spending cuts.

5) IMMIGRATION: “It is time to provide an opportunity for legal residence and citizenship for those who were brought to this country as children and who know no other home…. I’m pleased that many of my colleagues in both chambers of Congress on both sides of the aisle have begun work in good faith to address these issues.” Republicans have embraced immigration reform after losing the Hispanic vote in the 2012 election. In 2010, Cantor and 160 other Republicans voted against the DREAM Act, a measure that “would offer a pathway to citizenship for undocumented young people who attend college or serve in the military.”

6) OBAMACARE: “The new medical device tax in ObamaCare makes it harder for researchers to develop these innovative devices in the U.S….ObamaCare has unnecessarily raised the costs of our health care. “ A tax on the medical devise industry — which will benefit from health care reform — will help fund coverage expansion, without undermining innovation. As the Center For Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) points out the tax “does not apply to eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, or any other medical device that the public generally buys at retail for individual use.” It would also have minimal impact on innovation since “tax rate is just one of the many factors affecting financial incentives.” The Affordable Care Act has had a very small effect on current premiums.

7) MEDICARE: “We should begin by ending the arbitrary division between Part A, the hospital program, and Part B, the doctor services. We can create reasonable and predictable levels of out-of-pocket expenses without forcing seniors to rely on Medigap plans…. “ President Obama has included many of these efficiency reforms in his budgets — but the GOP’s proposal move far beyond increasing program efficiency. Cantor and almost all Republicans support transforming Medicare into a voucher or premium-support program that will shift health costs to seniors without reducing overall health care spending.

8) MEDICAID: “We can provide states more flexibility with respect to Medicaid that will allow them to provide better care for low-income families in a way that ultimately lowers costs….And we must make it faster and simpler for states to gain approval of federal waivers to modify their Medicaid programs.” Democrats support increasing state flexibility in the Medicaid program, though Republicans — and Cantor himself — have voted to slash federal funding for Medicaid by 1/3 and shift some of the burden of Medicaid’s growing costs to the states. As a result, states could reduce enrollment by more than 14 million people, or almost 20 percent—even if they are were able to slow the growth in health care costs substantially.

BOTTOM LINE: The GOP’s problem isn’t bad branding, it’s bad policies. If Republicans really want to be more popular, they should stop pushing policies that are opposed by the vast majority of the American people.

Lies Lies And More Lies

And Congratulations for the biggest lie of them all goes to….

Good morning!

Carly: It seems we’re reading the same writes. And you may be right about Michigan’s Governor signing into law the big lie his” Right to Work” - this is indeed very upsetting. All I can say is the repubs are still sore about losing the election and will continue to fight the president in his agenda to help all the American people  and do everything they possibly can to make him fail, all at the expense of the American people. I HOPE that come the 2014 elections, people will remember the repubs in the House that did this (and no doubt whatever else the House legislates against the wellness of the American people until then) and vote them out of office. The House is bringing us down and that needs to change.

So yes, I agree with you, and today I still want to highlight the LSOS Romney.

So…here’s the write:

PolitiFact Lie Of The Year: Mitt Romney’s Jeeps In China Ad

Mitt Romney China

PolitiFact has named Mitt Romney’s claim that Jeep is moving its U.S. production to China as its “Lie Of The Year.”

Romney made the false claim in a speech on the campaign trail and a television ad, despite Chrysler’s assertion that it is maintaining its American operations and considering expanding production to China. His campaign sparked controversy when it aired the commercial in Ohio.

On Wednesday, PolitiFact declared the ad ”brazenly false.” The fact-checking organization outlined the origins of the claim and the backlash that ensued. “People often say that politicians don’t pay a price for deception, but this time was different,” it wrote. “A flood of negative press coverage rained down on the Romney campaign, and he failed to turn the tide in Ohio, the most important state in the presidential election.”

PolitiFact, of course, attracted its own share of controversy during the 2012 election — particularly for its review of politicians’ statements in its “Truth-O-Meter.” MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, for example, became one of the organization’s most outspoken critics when she raged against the organization for its assessment of a claim by Marco Rubio as well as President Obama’s State of the Union address.

Comments? Blog me.

Ruth, SM: I couldn’t have said it better. I was struggling with the words on how to get rid of this guy knowing his job is for life, and death our only relief, without blatantly wishing death upon him.  So your request of putting the situation into “God’s hands” pretty much took care of it for me. Let’s HOPE He’s listening. Okay…well…I guess it can’t be avoided - there’s my blatant wish of death. Let’s just call it a sacrifice for the good of the American people. Because really….we will be, as you say, “doomed as a nation”, if Scalia is still around.

Steven: :) Feels pretty good doesn’t it?

Peace out.

Vote Counting Company Tied To Romney

Good morning!

Another write brought to you by one of our favorites regulars. You should know who I am speaking of by now.

Vote counting company tied to Romney

by Gerry Bello & Bob Fitrakis
September 27, 2012

Several Tanker trucks full of political ink have been spilled on Mitt Romney’s tenure as a vulture capitalist at Bain Capital. A more important story, however, is the fact that Bain alumni, now raising big money as Romney bundlers are also in the electronic voting machine business. This appears to be a repeat of the the infamous former CEO of Diebold Wally O’Dell, who raised money for Bush while his company supplied voting machines and election management software in the 2004 election.

In all 234 counties of Texas, the entire states of Hawaii and Oklahoma, half of Washington and Colorado, and certain counties in swing state Ohio, votes will be cast on eSlate and ePollbook machines made by Hart Intercivic. Hart Intercivic machines have famously failed in Tarrant County (Ft. Worth), adding 10,000 non-existent votes. The EVEREST study, commissioned by the Ohio secretary of state in 2007, found serious security flaws with Hart Intercivic products.

Looking beyond the well-documented Google choking laundry list of apparent fraud, failure and seeming corruption that is associated with Hart Intercivic, an ongoing Free Press investigation turned its attention to the key question of who owns the voting machine companies. The majority of the directors of Hart come from the private equity firm H.I.G. Capital. H.I.G. has been heavily invested in Hart Intercivic since July 2011, just in time for the current presidential election cycle. But who is H.I.G Capital?

Out of 49 partners and directors, 48 are men, and 47 are white. Eleven of these men, including H.I.G. Founder Tony Tamer, were formerly employed at Bain and Company, and two of those men, John P. Bolduc and Douglas Berman are Romney bundlers along with former Bain and H.I.G. manager Brian Shortsleeve.

Additionally, four of these men were formerly employed at Booz Allen Hamilton. Bush family friendly Carlyle group is an owner of Booz Allen which also made voting machines for the United States military. Booz Allen was also the key subcontractor for the controversial PioneerGroundbreaker program, an NSA data mining operation that gathered information on American citizens until it was shut down and replaced with even more invasive successor programs like MATRIX and Total Information Awareness.

H.I.G. Capital employees have given $338,000 to Mitt Romney’s campaign. That amounts to over $1500 per employee. Bain Capital, Mitt’s former company, by comparison, only gave him $268,000. H.I.G. is the 11th largest donor to the Romney Campaign. Clearly they are working really hard for their man. It appears that they will work even harder on election night. Although not boisterously promising to deliver states where their machines are to Romney as Wally O’Dell of Diebold did for Bush in 2004, they can alter hundreds of thousands of votes and swing the vote in the crucial swing state of Ohio.

Will Mitt’s cronies steal our democracy the way they stole our jobs? Time will tell, but they have certainly positioned themselves to do so if they choose.

In our first investigative article Who owns Scytl? George Soros isn’t in the voting machines, but the intelligence community is,

the Free Press revealed that Scytl, a Spanish-based company now contracted to count 25% of the U.S. presidential vote, has ties to Booz Allen. Scytl’s start up funding comes from three European Venture Capital Firms, Balderton Capital, Nauta Capital, and Spinnaker SCR. The director of Nauta’s American operations is Dominic Endicott, who went from Cluster Consulting to Booz Allen Hamilton (NYSE: BAH) where he oversaw wireless practice. He then rejoined his former colleagues from Cluster Consulting at Nauta. In his capacity as a Nauta partner Endicott also sits on the board of CarrierIQ.

Scytl has emerged as the most mysterious election counting company in this presidential election. Scytl claims to have a Scytl USA division located in Glen Allen, Virginia. The following is a photo of the Scytl USA national corporate offices at 6012 Glen Allen Drive. The land deed records show that the owner of the property at that address is Hugh Gallagher, now listed as the managing director of Scytl USA. The deed, which was prepared in Ohio by a relocation firm in 2002, pre-dates the creation of Scytl USA. A Scytl USA sales office is located in Baltimore, Maryland, and appears to be a Rent-an-Office, often referred to as a “virtual” office which has a shared secretary and serves as a mail drop.

Readers: And we want this man Romney, this LSOS to be the CEO of our country? Never.

Social Butterfly: Nice to hear from you! The only learning that, in my opinion, needs to happen, is for women to learn not to put their lives and livelihood in the hands of men. Men are not going to learn or change, when it’s working for them…at least not in my time frame. NOW is the time for women to take control of their own lives and solidly come together in support of each other.

On another note, I was privy to the hotel key card thing but I didn’t know about the magnet. Thanks to your mom for sharing. I HOPE you’re doing good!

Al: What a nice surprise to see you here. Yes, it has been awhile. I like what you wrote. Thanks for taking the time to share your perspective, and for supporting women. You have been missed. Say hello to Howie, if you see him. :)

Julie, Mindy, Sati, Lisa, Sanna: Yay!! Thank you and thanks to all the girls who will follow suit. Spread the word! Encourage all of the females in your life to do the same same. Like I said, NOW is the time! xoxo

Nathan: Oh so true. Thanks for your support of women.

Caroline: I was sorry to read your story. I HOPE your life has lots of wonderful possibilities.

Martha: Your cute analogy made me smile. I needed that this morning.

Craig: It is so easy for a man to like you to say that libs are painting it with a broad brush. Of course you as a repug man would say that.  That is the problem – things like that get said all of the time. But because it doesn’t affect you, a man, you see nothing wrong with his “stupid statement”. But is it “stupid statements” like this that need to be looked at because it can affect women big time.

It is your male arrogance that prevents you from seeing the harm because to you, this is just a “stupid statement”, like so many others have made.  These kind of “stupid statements” obviously mean nothing to you, but I can tell you they mean something to us women. I have said this before so let me say this again for those stupid men who don’t get it:

I am used to  the male arrogance, but I am not numbed by it it where it becomes “normal” even though it is “normal” behavior by men…it is not acceptable and never will be.  To get used to it means, we normalize it and that is never going to happen with me – that means we as women are giving up and giving in to it. That will never be. I am just sick of it. It is so prevalent in so many little hits  of dialogue…the nuance that can slip by in a sentence or two if one is not conscious of it being there.

Well let me tell you, women are womaning up and paying attention to those “stupid statements”. And no more are we going to put up with the “stupid statements” or the men who spout them.

Readers: That’s it for me today. Your turn. Blog me.

Peace & Love…

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. Obama Wins

Good morning!

The Obama/Romney debate in its full entirety:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Readers: Obama won the debate.

And I am stunned over Romney’s behavior as he continues to lie and deceive the American people by changing his views on whatever he needs to, to win the election.  You like what Obama’s done? I can do that too. You like Obama’s policies? Those are my polices too. Really? Any person who votes for Romney is either really stupid or they’re voting color. It’s really that clear. And I am sickened by it…sickened by Romney’s behavior, and sickened by the fact that even after this debate which was just so illuminating, people will still vote for this LSOS.

What is also clear to me is that the past 4 years, up until this evening and most likely beyond, we are witnessing the true colors of racism in this country. It has always been there. Ask any OTW who has experienced it. But now, racism has been rearing it’s ugly head proud and wide, and it is is more disgusting than I ever imagined. If you ever thought it was not so bad, these past years are telling us it is that bad and worse than we imagined. At least it is for me. For those of us who are shocked at what we witness, it is nothing compared to what those on the receiving end of it have felt and experienced all of their lives.

Even if only 1/3 are the true hardcore racists, their sickening actions and attitudes make up for it all and plus some, for the 1/3 that stands around and does nothing, and the 1/3 that is not racist and does something. How can we let racism dictate the future of our country? I am hoping we don’t.

As much as I applaud Obama’s win last night – he was so on point – I am feeling sickened by Romney, and the reaction to him. His actions are a huge warning signal that people should run as far away from this LSOS sociopath as fast as they can – but they are not. And that is what is stunning to me.

If you never felt your vote was that important to the future of your life or future of this country and possibly the world, this presidential election is the time to feel that way. Your vote matters – there is only one president to vote for – make sure you vote is for the right one.

Are you feeling the same same as me? Blog me.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.
