More On Romney…

…thanks to Rachel Maddow’s Blog.

Good morning!

Thanks Rachel! Enough cannot be said about this man who thinks he is capable of running this country.

The most inexperienced candidate in generations

  -
Mon Apr 23, 2012 10:15 AM EDT

Speaking at the national NRA convention recently, Mitt Romney made a curious boast. “I am running for president because I have the experience and the vision to lead us in a different direction,” he said. Later in the same speech, Romney added, “I am running for president because I have the experience and vision to get us out of this mess.”

Of all the qualifications to emphasize, “experience” seems like an odd characteristic for Romney to brag about. Whether or not the presumptive Republican nominee offers a compelling “vision” remains to be seen — at this point, he tends to stick to vague generalities, as part of a deliberate strategy – but experience is a quantifiable quality.

And it doesn’t appear to be Romney’s strong point.

In fact, I counted up the years of experience in public office or active-duty military service for all of the recent major-party nominees, and discovered something interesting: Romney has less experience in public service than any modern presidential candidate. Here’s a chart (click for a bigger version) I put together on the subject:

Click for a bigger version.

To clarify a few details that may not be obvious in the image, purple reflects active-duty military service; red reflects a role as a state executive (governor, lieutenant governor, or state attorney general); green reflects serving as a mayor; gray reflects serving in a state legislature; light blue reflects serving in the U.S. Congress; orange reflects serving in a presidential Cabinet or in a cabinet-level position (H.W. Bush led the CIA, for example); and dark blue reflects serving as either president or vice president.

Also, for the purpose of this examination, I only counted experience that the candidates had at the time of their election. So with Barry Goldwater, for example, he’d been in the U.S. Senate for 12 years when he won the Republican presidential nomination in 1964, though after his defeat, he served additional terms in the chamber. Only the service at the time of the presidential race is included in this analysis.

And using this metric, Romney has only four years under his belt. He served one term as the governor of Massachusetts — and that’s it. This makes Romney the least experienced major-party presidential nominee since Republican Wendell Wilkie lost to FDR in 1940. If Romney wins, he’ll be the least experienced president since Woodrow Wilson, who won exactly 100 years ago, despite only having been governor of New Jersey for two years before his national campaign.

It’s worth pausing to consider whether this matters.

By my count, if elected, Romney would be the third least-experienced president in American history, trailing every chief executive except Wilson and Grover Cleveland, who was mayor of Buffalo for one year and the governor of New York for two years before getting elected president 128 years ago. Every other president had served more than four years in the military and/or public office at the time of their election.

For Romney, this may be considered a selling point. Though he hasn’t really been pressed on his lack of experience thus far, it’s easy to imagine the former one-term governor arguing that his limited resume, at least in public service, makes him an “outsider.” Since voters have been conditioned to look askance at “professional politicians,” Romney’s limited governmental background may well be perceived as a plus.

That, however, raises the question of why politics is the only profession in which inexperience is something to brag about. When passengers get on airplane, do they think, “I really hope this pilot is a rookie”? When patients go the hospital, do they say to themselves, “I prefer to see physician who hasn’t practiced medicine for very long”?

This at least seems worthy of some larger discussion. Romney has less experience in public service than any major-party presidential nominee in 72 years. When evaluating the candidates in 2012, it’s not unreasonable to think this should be in the mix.

Romney aka “Mr. ________” – What do you call him?

Good morning!

I pulled this write from Maddow’s Blog this morning. Although Romney is Mr. Secrecy, it isn’t exactly the name I would call him. I can’t help it but ever time I see him the only word that comes to mind is “sleazy”…well not the only word...LSOS is another. So…If I was the writer of this write I might call the title “A growing interest in Mr. Sleazy”.  What do you call him?

A growing interest in Mr. Secrecy

  -
Wed Apr 18, 2012 9:27 AM EDT

Mitt Romney appears rather desperate to shield his tax returns from public scrutiny. He hasthe materials — when Romney was considered for John McCain’s 2008 ticket, the former governor turned over 23 years worth of returns — he just doesn’t want to share the materials.

The Romney campaign, however, has a new line it hopes will put a stop to the questions. Ed Gillespie told Fox News the other day, “In 2004, John Kerry as a Democratic presidential nominee, released two years of tax returns. In 2012, Governor Romney will release two years.” Romney himself repeated this on CNBC yesterday, saying, “John Kerry released two years of taxes.”

The problem, of course, is that the talking point isn’t true. Judd Legum explained that Kerry, by the time of his 2004 presidential campaign, had actually released 20 years of tax returns.

Romney was only off by a factor of 10.

The larger point, however, is that Romney’s secretive habits and desire to keep relevant details out of public view are opening up a new vulnerability that Democrats seem eager to target: his penchant for secrecy. The Democratic National Committee released this video on Tuesday, asking “what else” Romney might be hiding.

If it were just the tax returns, it’d be problematic enough, but Romney appears to haveestablished a pattern that leaves him vulnerable: he bought the hard drives from his term as governor so he could hide emails from the public; he’s hiding the names of his fundraising bundlers from the public; he’s keeping details of his policy agenda hidden from the public until after the election, etc.

These moves don’t exactly inspire trust in the presumptive Republican nominee.

For its part, there’s a Republican response to this: Obama is going after Romney’s religion. No, seriously.

Alec MacGillis flagged a report from Mike Allen’s Playbook, in which he quoted an unnamed Republican pushing back against accusations surrounding Romney’s secrecy.

“These are exactly the kind of questions we asked about Obama in 2008 and were accused of race baiting, or suggesting he was somehow un-American. Now they ask it: What’s his secret? It does seem like they are going after the Mormonism, right? I’d do the same thing if I was them. But we were never up on our high horse about better angels and hope and change and all that B.S.”

Allen’s report also quoted an unnamed LDS member:

“[T]his is a way to talk about Romney’s Mormonism without appearing to be attacking his religion…. Because, isn’t Mormonism some mysterious cult involving secret temple rites and strange undergarments? And it just happens to dovetail with some minor points on offshore accounts, but I think the message between the lines is clear.”

I have to admit, I didn’t see this one coming. If Democrats notice that Romney is keeping his tax returns hidden, and he purchased 17 state-issued hard drives, purging the Romney administration’s email records in advance of his presidential campaign, this is all part of an elaborate scheme to talk about … Mormons?

Someone’s going to have to explain this one to me.

My sincere hope is that we won’t reach the point at which every criticism of Romney leads to shrieks from Republicans saying, “See? They’re attacking his faith!” This kind of response to legitimate and secular inquiries is cheap, lazy, and wrong.

*S*L*E*A*Z*Y*

Readers: That is certainly something to HOPE for, but is there any question this is exactly what the republicans will do? We already know, the “party of no”,  that shout “ABO!” (Anybody but Obama!) will stoop as low as they can go.

Blog me.

Anonz: Thank you for always keeping us informed. Let’s HOPE the president is reading too.

Lucia: Did I say the republicans will stoop as low as they can go? And evidently the Secret Service are not above taking bribes.

So much for the SS honoring their secrecy. I have a hard time believing that all of the SS were bribed and bragging, but it doesn’t surprise me that the ones who weren’t, if any, didn’t say, “Shut the fuck up” to the others or just separate themselves from the scene. But you know how the big head can overrule the little head. It doesn’t matter now. Whether you were bribed, bragging, or not, they’re all busted.

All I can say is “Where is the loyalty? What happened to respecting and protecting president Obama and the well-being of our country?” It seems all you need to do is toss around a few million bucks to the greedy and you can say goodbye to loyalty and country.

JD: Intelligence can’t be taught…you got it or your don’t and JD…DON’T.

Je: Love it.

Helen: With respect to Glen’s apology, I have to agree with Zen Lill. That is the problem these days, men apologize for the horrific things they say and do after, and only after, they are scolded, and women such as yourself, read it as genuine and accept it.  If no one said anything, would Glen have apologized? I doubt it. He would’ve figured he got away with it because he did…and then guess what? He would behave like this all over again. When will this stop? Men get away with this sort of thing all of the time because women such as yourself accept their apologies as sincere.

I don’t. In my opinion, his true thoughts came bursting out with very little care about what he was typing out. He could’ve re-read what he wrote before he hit the comment button, sending it out for all to see. But he didn’t. If he really didn’t mean it then he shouldn’t have written it. Why would you write such a nasty thing to a woman if you didn’t mean it? Why? Because men get away with this kind of thing all of the time.

Treating women with disrespect is the normal on this planet. And when men apologize for it after they’ve been scolded, and it is accepted by certain women, all that does is make light of the nasty comment. Like it was no big deal. It is a big deal. And unacceptable. When women stop putting up with such bad behavior by men, and start standing up for their sisters, and not buy the BS apologies by men, perhaps things will then change for women.

Peace & Love.

Michele Bachmann: LSOS

Good morning!

With all of the talk abut women’s contraception, what should be available, what should not, what rights we have over our bodies, what is trying to be taken away, and who is trying to control women and our decisions over our bodies…I can’t exactly point to any republican, including the women, and especially including Rep. Michele Bachmann, (R-Minn), as a supporter of women, when their whole agenda is to control women and take away our right to choose.

So when I watched Bachmann arguing with a straight face in support of a woman’s right to choose, on Meet the Press, my mouth dropped in amazement.

“What we want is women to be able to make their own choices…. You see, that’s the lie that happens under Obamacare. The president of the United States effectively becomes a health care dictator. Women don’t need anyone to tell them what to do on health care. We want women to have their own choices, their own money. That way they can make their own choices for their future on their own bodies.”

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

********

ReadersMichele Bachmann is saying she and her party want American women to be able to “make their own choices for the future of their own bodies.”  She is a far-right republican who opposes women’s reproductive rights, and here she is speaking passionately, and falsely might I add, as if she is in support of women and their right to choose, live on television.

Where has this woman been? Has Bachmann not a clue about her party’s plan, or has she been lying under a rock and just decided yesterday to peek her size-of-a-pea-brained head out? Because if she was lucid she would know that her party pushes to restrict contraception access, and wants to get rid of Planned Parenthood. Does she not know that her party supports transvaginal ultrasounds – basically state-sanctioned rape! Of course she knows. Talk about a false betrayal – Bachmann is displaying false loyalty - Bachmann is a lying sack of shit.

If I have not welcomed Bachman as a member of the LSOS Club, let me do that now.

Anything to say – Blog me.

Peace out.

…doing what they do best….lie, Lie, LIE.

Good morning!

Hey, Etch A Sketch Conservatives: Time to Resurrect Some Honesty

A spring awash with Etch A Sketch conservatives, camera-wielding GOP con men and a bogus deficit reduction budget from House Republicans shows that for the right, wrong is justified when it achieves the desired results.

A perfect example of this political philosophy is the work of James E. O’Keefe III, a right-wing, unsupervised, unaccountable, self-appointed and self-styled “investigative journalist” who has violated federal law, lied about his identity and deceitfully cut and pasted video to destroy what he perceives as liberal institutions.

Oddly for the party that claims conservative Christians as key constituents, O’Keefe’s misbehavior is celebrated by GOP talking heads — the likes of Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity. That encourages copycats. The New York Times last week told the tale of one. John M. Howting, a bungling video scam man, sees himself as an O’Keefe apostle.

Honorable journalists abide by an ethics code forbidding lying to secure a story. For them, the end does not justify the means. By contrast, for O’Keefe and today’s Etch A Sketch conservatives, the end they want vindicates any scheme to secure it. Deliberate lying, cynical deceit, cut-and-paste deception — all of that is rationalized by conservatives to get their way. It’s a lovely escape clause they’ve written for themselves from that annoying Judeo-Christian thou-shalt-not-lie commandment.

O’Keefe wannabe John M. Howting tried clumsily to trod in his disgraced mentor’s footsteps, lying about his name, who he represented and his intentions in a failed effort to discredit a couple of what he perceived to be liberal New York community groups.

O’Keefe had better luck. This right-wing rebel without a conscience lied about his name, who he represented and his intentions in successful efforts to manipulate some targets into saying stupid stuff, which he surreptitiously recorded. His deceptive and distorted films destroyed ACORN and damaged other groups he considered progressive. Despite O’Keefe’s liberal use of the Commandment escape clause, he became conservatives’ golden boy.

Among right-wing talk show hosts who urged their conservative Christian listeners to praise the con wasBill O’Reilly, who said O’Keefe should be awarded a Congressional medal. Not so worshiping were federal prosecutors who charged O’Keefe with misrepresenting himself in an attempted phone hacking at the office of U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La. O’Keefe pleaded guilty. And not so revering was the California state attorney general who determined that O’Keefe’s sliced-and-diced video misrepresented the actions of ACORN workers.

Conforming to the conservatives’ philosophy of wrong-is-right-if-the-right-benefits is GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Like a Judas, he betrayed his own health insurance program.

Romney contended that requiring everyone to get health insurance — known as the individual mandate — was good when he was governor of Massachusetts and signed Romneycare, which includes it. As Congress considered health care reform, Romney repeatedly said Romneycare should be the model for the nation. But later when conservatives blasted the individual mandate in Obamacare, Romney sold out his Massachusetts plan, saying an individual mandate was not good for the nation.

Similarly, in 1994 during Romney’s failed campaign for U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy’s seat, Romney and his wifeattended a Planned Parenthood fundraiser and she donated $150 to the group. But now, in pursuit of the vote of the anti-abortion Christian right, Romney no longer likes Planned Parenthood so much, promising:

“Planned Parenthood, we’re going to get rid of that.”

Are those switches adorable little flip-flops or calculated lying? The comments of a chief Romney aide, Eric Fehrnstrom, show they are calculated. A reporter asked Fehrnstrom how Romney would appeal to crucial middle-of-the-road voters in the fall after taking such hard right positions in the spring to win the primary. Fehrnstrom compared the campaign to an Etch A Sketch:

“You can kind of shake it up and restart all over again.”

So, basically, tell the conservative Christian primary voters one thing. Then tell the mainstream general election voters something else. This is the campaign of the GOP frontrunner, the party’s likely standard-bearer. This is who most Republicans voted for.

It makes sense really. Apparently Republicans don’t expect the truth. Look at the Ryan budget. He calls it the Path to Prosperity. The nation went down this road of tax cuts for the rich and program cuts for the middle class before, under Bush II, and it was a one-way road to increased income inequality. Voodoo trickle-down economics is a path to prosperity only for the already prosperous.

Congressman Paul Ryan contends his budget is a deficit-buster, that it would shrink the deficit to 1.2 percent of the gross domestic product by 2022 — which is exactly the same place where the country would be if it did nothing, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office. In addition, the cumulative 10-year deficits under Ryan’s plan would be $200 billion higher than just doing nothing. No busting going on there.

The GOP wants conservative Christian votes so badly it’s willing to break those set-in-stone rules conservative Christians revere. Frankly, it’s surprising this behavior doesn’t make conservative Christians cross. Republicans might consider resurrecting respect for the 9th Commandment if they want to avoid a Christian right inquisition into their Etch A Sketch positions.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. Good morning!

The Lying Sack Of Shit category, a sub category to the category, “Political Powwow”, in honor or recognizing ( but not limited to)  Lying Sack Of Shit politicians, was added to my blog on December 31st of last year, 2011. Which inspired the Lying Sack Of Shit Club, Aka LSOS Club, a few days later.

I thought today was a good day to recognize those who are members so far, and to congratulate them for making the list. If I missed anyone or if you have anyone that you want added, blog me.

If you are not sure your candidate fits the definition of a LSOS, I pulled this from the Urban Dictionary website to help you make your decision. It seems there a quite a few “thumbs up”supporting this definition, but hey, this is just one definition of an LSOS.  If you’ve got a better one that fits, please do blog it as well.

Urban Dictionary: lying sack of shit

82 up, 10 down

n. (metaphorical, yet, often simultaneously literal) one who habitually and effortlessly utters falsehoods in a most blatant and profane manner, all the while maintaining a lackadaisical appearance of ingenuousness; despite, or perhaps, due to the fact that their entire corporeal membrane is filled to bursting with an inexhaustible supply of foul, though nitrogen-rich fecal mendacities waiting to be excreted into their victims’ ears

I can’t believe you’d give any credence to anything that lying sack of shit says!

(insert name of any living politician or other person who wants something from you here) is a lying sack of shit!

Okay so here are the LSOS Club members so far:

Darryl’s cousin “Benny”

Alycedale’s pick: “Vicki Larson”

Doris’ brother “Lenny”

Anna of Guam picks: Senator Blas of Guam, Vice Speaker Benjamin J.F. Cruz
