Do You Have A Sworn Sister For Ten Thousand Years?

Good morning!

I do.

I have always loved my women friendships. I have quite a few, although I secretly wish that I had cultivated a tribe, like the Sex And The City girls. ( Okay I guess it is no longer a secret :). I am not complaining…oh no, I am very grateful for the female friendships that I have and the many “experiences” I have shared with some very special women in my life.

Many women value their female relationships, sexual or not. Many of us support each other, taking an oath of sisterhood, or an oath of marriage. And yet we continue to hear what has been quoted here many times….”Women are willing to throw each other under the bus”.

It begs the question, “Men do it enough to us, why do women do it to each other?”

I feel especially blessed when I have a special moment with one of my girls. It’s a very different connection with men.

Really…There is no comparisona connection with women is like no other.

And I’ll quote Arianna Huffington because I like what she has to say too,

“There really is no substitute for unconditional female friendship.”

Any woman that denies herself this connection, and there are many out there as we all know, including some women that have blogged here, are missing out in one of life’s greatest pleasures when it comes to the gifts of the mind, body, soul….and yes, the heart, that women give to each other.

So that being said, with all of the chatter on woman to woman love ( Thanks Winter for the inspiration this morning :), sexual or not it doesn’t matter, I was inspired to post about a new movie coming out, that pulled at my heart strings when I watched the trailer.

So whether you’re straight, gay, bisexual, whatever...whether you have a sworn sister for ten thousand years, or a tribe for life….or just love women for the wonderful beings that we are, I wanted to share this with you…dedicated to all the girls…

Snow Flower And The Secret Fan

PS: Me too – I’d love some dark chocolate with sea salt. And I’ll piggy back on Vulva’s comment…For the sexually inhibited “Chocolove” makes an excellent chocolate bar of dark chocolate and sea salt, and almonds. I recommend it – plus there’s a sweet little love poem inside each chocolate bar.

Zen Lill & Christine: Thank you both very much for your donations.

Tyna: Thank you very much for your detailed answer. ( Both of them! And especially for taking the time to make the corrections from your subordinate’s mistakes :)

Prism Princess: Yes, I am confirming that I am giving you permission to re-print comments from Tyna, on your blog.

Peace & Love: “Live it, Give it” …Today and everyday...give it to a girl :)

Trump is no clown

Good morning!

Lawrence O’Donnell Gets Letter From Donald Trump (Video)

Lawrence O’Donnell received one of Donald Trump’s infamous letters, and on his Friday show, he took the opportunity to savage Trump yet again.

Trump is well-known for sending critics angry letters, or press clippings with multiple handwritten notes on them. In the past few months, he sent a blistering letter to New York Times columnist Gail Collins, as well as one to Vanity Fair.

O’Donnell pointed out that (until Friday, at least) Trump had never sent him any such letters—odd, given the gleefully contemptuous way that O’Donnell targeted Trump during his public flirtation with a presidential run and his embrace of birtherism.

O’Donnell speculated that this was because Trump “knows I’m right about everything I say about him.”

Now, though, O’Donnell had a full packet of documents to share. Trump had sent him a print-out of a Dana Milbank column and written on it, “Lawrence, thanks for all your help. Best Wishes, Donald. P.S.: See you in the spring,” along with some other scribbles and underlinings of a section of the column that said NBC had offered him $60 million to stay on “The Apprentice.”

O’Donnell responded by attacking Trump’s claim that he is a billionaire. He played a clip of Trump saying that the reason he decided to stay on television was because NBC was “calling me on an hourly basis offering me all sorts of money to continue with ‘The Apprentice.’”

“Donald Trump just told you that the reason he didn’t run for president was the money,” O’Donnell said. “This from a guy who pretends to be a billionaire.”

I Wake Up Dreaming 2011

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 13th May 2011

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

Well our dear friend Elliot is at it again! His film noir series “I Wake Up Dreaming 2011″ begins this evening @ The Roxie Theater in San Francisco. Here’s the write:

Film programmer Elliot Lavine revels in dark side

Elliot Lavine has made an art of programming movies. Others put together festivals and tributes. Lavine puts together festivals and tributes that are complete psychological experiences.

Go on any given night to one of Lavine’s film noir shows, and you come away entertained and intellectually stimulated by the ideas and moods his double features incite. Go every night, and you begin to feel as if you’ve taken on an alternate mind-set that you float along inside throughout the day. When you reach that point, you’ve entered … the Lavine Zone … and all you want to do is go back that night to see more movies.

On Friday, Lavine launches his most ambitious creation yet, “I Wake Up Dreaming: The Legendary and the Lost,” two weeks of rare and unsettling film noir at the Roxie Theater. The films range from polished studio entries, like “Phantom Lady” (1944), to truly weird, off-the-beaten-path items, such as “Dance Hall Racket,” a grind-house attraction starring Lenny Bruce, with violence and nudity that’s downright shocking to see in a 1953 movie.

Lavine was born in Detroit in 1948 and grew up in its suburbs.

“Detroit was a terrific and exciting place to grow up in,” Lavine said, “but when it finally dawned on me that there were no movie theaters there that played older films, I packed up and moved to San Francisco.”

That was in 1975. For the next decade and a half, he made short films and supported himself by working at local bookstores. His noir short, “Blind Alley,” played at the San Francisco Film Festival in 1981.

In recent years, Lavine’s annual noir festivals have brought the Roxie Theater back to cultural relevance. It’s a welcome return for Lavine, who programmed the Roxie from 1990 to 2003, turning it into one of the two best repertory houses in the United States, on a par with Bruce Goldstein’s Film Forum in New York.

Lavine, easily one of the most liked people in the Bay Area film community, is known for his wide knowledge and boyish enthusiasm. When he programs a festival, he is there every night, talking to customers and sharing impressions of the movies. He loves what he does.

Film noir has been his specialty from the beginning. He put noir on the map in this part of the country with his first festival, in 1990, and has been at it ever since. (He even single-handedly discovered the original ending of Robert Aldrich’s “Kiss Me Deadly.”) In 2010, Lavine won the San Francisco Film Critics Circle’s Marlon Riggs Award for “courage and vision in the Bay Area film community.”

Q: What is it about noir that speaks so strongly to you – and to audiences?

A: Mainly, it’s the visuals. Certain themes – especially ones involving crime – are best suited to expressive, black-and-white photography. So a little B picture that doesn’t seem to be about anything at all carries challenging messages, visually, which make it highly subversive. They appear to be about nothing, but they’re about quite a bit. They take you to strange places.

Q: What makes this festival different from your others?

A: It showcases a lot of films I’ve wanted to play for years but haven’t been able to. It’s almost miraculous how so many different and important noir films suddenly became available at the same time. Like Robert Montgomery’s “Ride the Pink Horse” – I’ve been after that one for the longest time. Same with Fritz Lang’s “Ministry of Fear,” never on DVD. And I was able to bring in the UCLA Archive’s restored print of “Ruthless,” a neglected masterpiece from director Edgar G. Ulmer. Not to mention “Dementia” and “Phantom Lady” – a double bill I’ve dreamed about for years.

Q: In some of these movies, you get to see a harsh side of the past that movies normally don’t show, like in “Guilty Bystander” from 1950.

A: “Guilty Bystander” is remarkable because the location photography features some of the worst, most burnt-out areas in New York, which gives this poverty row film a raw honesty not generally found in Hollywood films of the ’50s.

Q: You’re a pretty buoyant guy. What’s the attraction to doom and hopelessness?

A: I guess I’m fascinated by what has eluded me, so I’m curious about the lost and the lonely. Sometimes we’re drawn to what disturbs us the most. Anyway, doom and despair have their own therapeutic value when they’re accidentally turned into art by a B-movie director.

I Wake Up Dreaming 2011: Film noir festival. Fri.-May 26. Roxie Theater, 3117 16th St., S.F. (415) 863-1087. www.roxie.com.

Congratulations Elliot! Looking forward to this, as well as seeing you and T.

Jessica: You’re welcome. And I agree – men can go elsewhere if the subjects are uncomfortable. However “real” men stick around. And yes Doug is one, and it is a pleasure.

Helena: Nice to hear from you. It’s been awhile –  How are you?

Robert: I’d say that’s pretty clear. Thanks for taking the time.

Bob: :) My grandmother was married to man who everyone thought couldn’t hear very well…oh but he could.

Liwanaq: Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed you’re write. I take it you’ll be voting for Obama the second time around.

Anonymous: Did she call and say what you wished? Did her voice give you relief? I don’t know how any girl who would read those words from her man, not dial her man up.

Readers: I am happy it’s Friday. And it seems this blog never tires of flapping it’s lips, so keep flapping. Blog me. :-) I have had a very hectic week. To those I have not responded to yet, here and off blog, I HOPE to by the end of the weekend. Thanks for your patience.

PEACE OUT.

Wonderful Women Of The World

Good morning!’

I’ve been meaning to post this segment from 60 minutes for a few weeks now.  A New York radio personality and theater producer Vy Higginsen, is a woman with a cause. Her cause? To save gospel music. How does she plan on doing it? Through the voices of teenagers.

Five years ago Higginsen started “Gospel for Teens.”, a place where young teens gather in an old brownstone in Harlam every Saturday and sing gospel music. I love gospel music for the sound and the joy that I feel when I hear it. And although I was so moved by her passion and her dedication to the music, my reason alone was reason enough to want to honor her as my choice for Wonderful Women Of The World today. And hey, the cool thing is she’s not only saving gospel music, but some would say she’s saving the teens too.

Check it out:

Readers: Ugh…I don’t know why I can’t get the links to work anymore from 60 minutes. So, click here to watch Part One. If you enjoyed the fist segment, click here to watch Part Two.

Zen Lill: If you don’t check in hear, HOPE that you and Lilly have fun on Mother’s Day!

Jill: Oh good. My pleasure. Have fun at the event!

Liam: No, I am absolutely not giving “orderlyrandomness”, Prism Princess, or anyone else the right to publish material they find here without having to say that it was published on my blog first. And if ”orderlyrandomness”, is Prism Princess, then it would be proper and common courtesy to say that she published it here, on my blog first.

Rick: And they will be relentless at trying.

I’m wrapping it up. The forum is open – speak your peace, or whatever moves your mouth or inspires the tapping of the keys. Blog me.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. Tribal Baroque

Good morning!

Doug and I went to a party last night in Mill Valley, in an old church remodeled into an artist’s abode/studio. We witnessed a very interesting dual between two performers who at first seemed very opposing, until they started performing, and then…they melded as if they were meant to be.

He, Thoth, dark-skinned, tribal like in his appearance, while she  Lila ‘Angelique, pale-skinned, dressed all in white, shimmering in silver and feathers. Together they both share the love of violin and opera.

And when they come together in union, it is a beautiful haunting of times past, a romantic worldly divineness that evokes not only the ethereal goddess in me, but stirs a passion in the very raw.

The dichotomy…was breathtaking. The result, is Tribal Baroque.

Here is a little taste of what the dual does. However to see them live is a treat one should not miss. For my local readers, you can see Tribal Baroque in Golden Gate Park today near the Conservatory of Flowers. Everyone else, check out their website.

Enjoy.
