Weekend Highlights

Posted by michellemoquin on 25th August 2008

How was the weekend?

Lots happened it seems….I got a text message at 1:53 am on Saturday morning announcing that Obama chose Biden as his VP. Hmm…I guess someone thinks I’m important enough to get the word out :)

We haven’t had a chance to talk about it but what does everyone think about Biden? He has many years under his belt, especially in foreign policy, an area that many feel Obama could use a little help in. I’m all for it.  Secretly I was hoping for Hillary but with the way she was campaigning against Obama, it seems there was little chance he was going to pick her. Unless…her backing down had anything to do with him choosing her for VP – evidently not. At this point I am up for anyone who can bring Obama closer to just getting in. Hopefully Biden is the right choice. We’ll soon see….

On another note…did you see the closing ceremony of the Olympics last night?  I have to hand it to the Chinese – they ended it with an amazing show. Overall the best opening and closing shows I have ever seen….hands down.  The creativity was endless, and I would love to know who all the choreographers were. Brill!

It was cool to see the highlights – those are always fun. I got into watching many more of the sports this year than in previous years. Love the field and track. Especially the Jamaican winner ? Bolt? Damn that guy can run! Could he have a more perfect name? He is so elegant and effortless.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unYaQ39d_l0&hl=en&fs=1]

May and Walch, the dynamic volleyball duo, as usual had me glued to the TV but I missed the finals – too late for me :( And Phelps…could he clean up any more so? I hear he is destined to make more money in the next few years than any other sports figure  - I guess we’ll be seeing him in every ad from Speedo to Wheaties…oh that’s right, he decided to go with Frosted Flakes instead.

Although, being a competing gymnast when I was younger, my all time favorite has always been the women’s gymnastics. Funny though, I didn’t get into it this year too much.  I saw the highlight of gold medalist for floor exercise, Romania’s Sandra Izbasa and I witnessed America’s gold medalist Shawn Johnson on the beam, but I have to say as talented as they are in executing all of those crazy twisting moves, they didn’t inspire me much.  Technically, it was all there but I felt they were lacking in spark and personality. Olga and Nadia they are not.

Readers: Your favs? Thoughts on anything this Monday morning?

Have a good one….peace out.

Who cares who celebs vote for? I don’t.

Posted by michellemoquin on 21st August 2008

I know this is last weeks news, but I haven’t given my two.

Who gives a hoot who Angelina votes for? The bigger question is why is she still ‘undecided’? Does she not have a brain? She’s waiting to ‘make up her mind’. Obviously she doesn’t have one. (ouch)

“I have not decided on a candidate,” Jolie says, “I am waiting to see the commitments they will make on issues like international justice, refugees and how to address the needs of children in crisis around the world.”

…..blah blah blah.

Okay, so she’s done some humanitarian work around the world and she’s a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations. I won’t knock her for that. But do your research Jolie…for one thing…McCain wants to overturn Roe v Wade.  Oh but that’s right, you would be okay with that since you and Brad are raising your own little army of 20(?) No need for abortions here.  Who cares about other women having the right to choose.

What is it with this country that looks upon our celebrities as something special, just cause they grace the silver screen. They’re just people who can act and some aren’t even good at that. But that’s what happens when you don’t have royalty – we turn to the next biggest thing – celebrities! Give me a break.  It really bothers me that people look to celebs to help them decide, like they’re in the know, privy to something that we don’t know. Don’t be lazy and base your decision on hers or any other celeb. Do your own research, use your own brain. I know you have one.

Think I’m riding Jolie a bit hard?  Barely. I’m tame –  nothing in comparison to Roseanne Bar – Have you read her blog lately? I haven’t, but I did find this little read that she wrote recently.   Disclaimer: I am not a big fan of hers but I just had to post one of her writings, just to add a little humor to my day and hopefully yours.

After calling Voight a ‘used Tampon’ (whoa – now that’s a low blow – typical Roseanne.) She blogged

‘jon voight your evil spawn angelina jolie and her vacuous hubby brad pitt make about forty million dollars a year in violent psychopathic movies and give away three of it to starving children trying to look as if they give a crap about humanity as they spit out more dunces that will consume more than their fair share and wreck the earth even more. (just sayin’).

Also miss jolie says she likes mccain too and hasn’t decided who to endorse….huh? Aren’t you supposed to be somewhat enlightened, or do you not know that the african daughter you hold in every picture had parents who suffered and died because of the republican party’s worldwide economic assault on africa over the last few decades since reagan? whaaaa…??????!!!! (for that matter, the thai and vietnamese sons you are photo’d with weekly too!!!? who’s pictures you sell to raise money to help the poor? Their families are victims of America’s right wing military incursions too. Mccain wants to continue with the idea of war for profit…the americans are over that thinking now! They have drugged our troops and lower classes into supporting their oil business atrocities for long enough. We want to save not lose our souls thank you. Now go back to making your movies about women who love to handle big guns that shoot hundreds of people to death. Ps….it might be good for your asian and african children’s self esteem to know you support a brown man for the leader of the free world.)’

Hahha!!! love it. Of course, not that I give a hoot about what Roseanne thinks.  She has proven in her past political commentary that she doesn’t have a leg to stand on – Everyone, rightly so, gave her hell over her mouthiness awhile back, but I think she has a few good points here – you?

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Health info: I am diggin’ the info your posting – please show face.

Hi Jonolan: Need I say more? I briefly went to your blog and Like ZL I got caught on the cute kid too. Needless to say…that is as far as I got.

Hi ZL:  Oh, I wish I could’ve seen Obama dance – you know what they say about a man who can dance. The women are swooning now. Pictures of Obama over the bed…lights out- fantasy time. :)

Oh Yeh. I am in need of some nature right now. Stinson Beach is calling out to me. Come join me?

Hey Viv:  How are you? Can you give us an update with Tal and the Climax.

Hey Maddie: As always…you find that opening, slip right in, and rip it open wide. :)

Hi Doug: I know how optimistic you are but…even with women having the majority of the vote in this country…sorry many are stupid and brainwashed by their white husbands who would never vote a black man into the White House even if he was god. Let’s hope some of those women saw him dance – hey, whatever it takes to make them change their minds :)

Hello Kurt:  Welcome – thanks for commenting.  There are many factors when it comes to the voting booth. Changing ones mind is the cleanest one. We are all familiar with the ‘questionable votes’, ‘missing’ votes, and worse yet voters tempted with payment. It happened many years ago in the south when those with little sold their votes for 10 or 20 bucks. I don’t put anything past the repubs to do whatever it takes again to get their man in.  They will cheat and lie again.

Hi Elaine:  So you’re loving space and obviously doing a great job up there. Congrats for a job well done as well as feeling physically at ease with yourself. That is huge. It feels good when one can be proud of one self, yes? Good for you for taking a moment and recognizing the changes in yourself and for stopping for a moment…..to ‘be proud’. It feels like it is coming from your heart and not your ego. Good to hear from you.

ZL: Just caught your comment this morning…Oh, if only it was that easy to convert a racist.  One has to want to change. But it’s worth a try :)

Gathering of the Moons

Posted by michellemoquin on 8th August 2008

Good Morning….

I’ve got China on my mind again. Nothing political…well only a little. And after all, today is the opening day of the Olympics so why not celebrate something we can all appreciate?

 Let’s talk Art!

I love art especially abstract and modern art….grew up with it all over our house. My father is an artist and I suppose I was so used to being around interesting art and artists my entire life, that I never really appreciated how lucky I was to be surrounded by such creativity.

I love art especially abstract and modern art….grew up with it all over our house. My father is an artist and I suppose I was so used to being around interesting art and artists my entire life, that I never really appreciated how lucky I was to be surrounded by such creativity.

However, I do remember our first family visit to Europe when I was twelve and visiting all of the museums day after day got really old when there was so much more to see such as….fashion!  Obviously the love of art showed up in a different medium that resonated with me to my core.  Fashion as an art form was my passion and all of the art that I was so blessed to view as I grew up influenced me year after year in my business.

So when I was flipping through the paper the other day, an abstract sculpture caught my eye. The article was featuring 20 sculptors who were commissioned to do artwork for the Beijing Olympics and  one of the artists was from Oakland: Bruce Beasley. It was him and his sculpture that graced the front page.

Sculpture by Bruce Beasley, Photo by Michael Macor / The Chronicle

Beasley’s sculpture, “Gathering of the Moons’ are beautiful slicing steel discs that fit together in an abstract form. And although he has shown several pieces of work in China, they always come back to the US…this one however will be a permanent installation.

Beasley says, ‘I like to take shapes that alone don’t carry any emotional feeling, but by their intersecting of each other, start to talk to us emotionally.’ He relates it to how musical notes that stand alone have very little meaning…but put them together…‘….it’s their relationship with each other that makes the difference between something that’s noise and banal and something that is profound and moving.’

I like his analogy…right on. I see the musical movement in his ‘Gathering of the Moons’. And being the tactile person that I am, I wish I was in Beijing to not only feast my eyes, but delight my hands to their touch…I can only imagine how smooth the moons must feel and how their reflective surface shimmers in the sunlight.

Hey….has anyone there seen this beauty live?

Hello Eng:  I am saddened by your email. I could never imagine what it is like to walk in your shoes. I was blessed to born a woman in America.

I feel it is my duty to write about worldly issues; to get them out there as I learn, so that I can share and spread what needs to be heard. I’m sure that goes for anyone who writes on my blog. I too learn from those that share their knowledge.

Hi Merkid:  My only hope is that your surprise will be one that brings no harm but enlightens, teaches, or sends a message that many will listen to. I look forward to seeing it.

Hi Sheikh: How are you? Thanks for responding. Unfortunately, I had guessed as much. I bet the Mongol women that you brought up are so excited to finally have freedom.

Thanks for allowing some Mongols to get in so that we can hear their thoughts.

In regards to the rest of your comment….Ironies are popular these days….it seems to go hand in hand with greed.

Hey Muhuli: Unfortunately and sadly you are so right. I wish I could say differently. ‘Exterminated’: The meaning is so different from being ‘assimilated’ but the intention is the same.  Why not call it what it is?  Do persecutors feel?  If they did, if they could step into your shoes and feel what being exterminated feels like, then they would not do what they do.

Hi Eji:  As much as all of the girls are looking forward to meeting me, it is I who will be delighted to have such amazing girls from all over the world in my presence. You are all ‘up there’ working hard, learning and preparing. I too am preparing in my own way ‘down here’.

Love your new attitude! And you are so right…there is room on earth for all of the cultures to inhibit it.

ZL: I have a serious hankering too…Doug: do something! :)

It is early and I have a job to go to – yes…this woman is back to work, part time helping out a friend. I’ll be posting way early every Friday morning for awhile…which means I’ll be getting up even earlier. Oh…How I love my sleep :)

Have a good one.

Gratefully your blog host,

Never miss a good chance to shut up

Posted by michellemoquin on 30th June 2008

Good morning(?)

I am dragging myself out of bed this morning.  It was a helluva night with crazy dreams of my good friend Tom Bailey , who passed a way some time ago, and a childhood friend Rigzin, that I have known since I was seven, that I don’t really talk to anymore. Throw in the fact that our smoke alarm in the hallway was beeping, ‘I need a new battery’, every god only knows how long, that woke me up every time.  Doug was his typical, sleep through everything state, while I tried to find Zen.  I did and I want to share it with you. It is about all I can contribute this morning to my blog as my eyes are barely open and my mind is thoughtless – yes! The key to a quiet mind is to get so damn tired, your mind goes on vacation.

So…here it is from my good friend Maharishi:

I hope that your Monday started off a lot better than mine.  I’m off for a good strong chai and something rich and totally fattening to stuff in my mouth.

Hey ZL: Did you like the above? -made me think of you. :)

Hi Adam:  I do want to continue with our conversation but this morning I feel totally incapable and incapacitated – sorry it is not going to be the day for me to respond. Please feel free to add any more delightful tidbits about dear Heracles if you choose.

Okay, this is my chance to shut up, so I will – See ya all MAÑANA!

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle  ?
