A Historic Agreement

The U.S. And China Strike An Ambitious Deal To Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions

In a surprising announcement last night, President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping jointly revealed a broad agreement between the United States and China to curb the two countries’ carbon emissions. The agreement between the two nations, which are the two largest carbon emitters in the world, sends a clear signal to other countries that they must also get serious about addressing the man-made causes of climate change. It also directly undercuts an oft-repeated conservative argument against climate action: that the U.S. doesn’t need to act on climate because China hasn’t either.

What Is In The Deal?
The agreement marks the culmination of nine months of negotiations between the two countries, capped off in recent days by Obama’s visit to China. The pledge commits the U.S. to cut its emissions 26 to 28 percent below their 2005 levels by 2025. As for China, it is committing to peak its overall carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, and to get 20 percent of its energy from non-fossil-fuel sources by that same year.

Why Is It Important?
No effort to combat climate change could succeed without these two countries. The United States and China are not only the two largest emitters of carbon dioxide in the world, they make up more than 40 percent of total worldwide emissions:

For the United States, the commitment to cut carbon emissions 26 to 28 percent by 2025 builds off the current target of a 17 percent reduction below the 2005 baseline by 2020. According to Climate Progress reporter Jeff Spross, “it could actually double the pace of emission cuts set by that initial goal — from 1.2 percent a year to as high as 2.8 percent per year.”

For China, meanwhile, this agreement is the first time it has made a serious commitment to address global warming by setting a goal for when its carbon emissions should stop growing. And its pledge to get 20 percent of its energy from clean sources by 2030 is enormous: it will require the country to generate 800-1,000 gigawatts of new carbon-free energy, the same amount as the total electricity the U.S. currently generates from all sources combined.

What Do People Think Of It?
Progressive and environmental groups agree that it is a critical step in efforts to combat man-made climate change. “This announcement is a game-changer,” said Melanie Hart, the Director for China Policy at the Center for American Progress. Jake Schmidt, director of the International Program at the Natural Resources Defense Council, emphasized China’s commitment: “You’re talking about 20 percent of a huge economy being based on non-carbon-dioxide emissions sources. That’s significant.”

Yet, it hasn’t taken long for Congressional Republicans to already start freaking out about the deal. Both Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner blasted the deal as part of President Obama’s alleged “war on coal” that will hurt the economy. (In fact, the new deal won’t hurt the economy, as the GOP leaders suggest — and it may actually drive economic growth.) Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK), a climate denier who’s now set to become head of the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee, complained that China’s promise is “hollow and not believable.”

These are some of the same people, along with many other Republican members of Congress, who previously have pointed the finger at China’s inaction as an excuse for why the United States shouldn’t address climate change on its own. Now that China has made this commitment, they want to have it both ways. Their reactions are the ones that are “hollow and not believable” — as well as being deeply threatening to the health of future generations and the health of the planet.

BOTTOM LINE: The new climate agreement between the United States and China is a historic step that marks the first time that China, the world’s largest polluter, has agreed on targets to limit its greenhouse gas emissions. While climate deniers continue to search for ways to avoid taking action, this agreement solidifies America’s leadership on the issue and underscores the importance of the United States, China, and the rest of the world taking meaningful steps to slow climate change’s effects.

What We Can Learn From The Voting Totals Of Every Senator In The Next Congress

The English language lacks superlatives strong enough to describe how bad last night was for Democrats. Republicans captured a majority in the Senate. They reelected several controversial governors. And they achieved their second “wave” election in just three election cycles. And yet, when the new, GOP-controlled Senate opens its first session next January, it will be strikingly unrepresentative of the voters who elected its members. A ThinkProgress review of the electoral results from 2010, 2012 and 2014 Senate races reveals that millions more Americans actually cast a vote for a Democratic Senate candidate than voted for a Republican candidate during the three election cycles that built the incoming Senate.

For 2010 and 2012, we relied on official tallies of the total votes cast in all Senate races released by the Federal Elections Commission. Those results show that Republican Senate candidates outperformed Democrats by 2,733,121 votes in 2010, while Democrats outperformed Republicans by a much larger 10,867,709 votes in 2012.

As no final tallies are available for 2014, we calculated the total number of votes cast in the most recent election cycle by adding together the total number of votes cast for Republican Senate candidates and the total number cast for Democrats using numbers reported by Politico. This required us to make a few judgment calls. In Alabama, where Sen. Jeff Sessions (R) ran unopposed, we tallied no votes for either party. In Kansas, where incumbent Republican Pat Roberts faced two independent challengers, we tallied all of Roberts’ votes for the GOP and zero votes for the Democrats. In Oklahoma and South Carolina, where both Senate seats were up for election (one in a general election and one in a special election), we counted the results of both elections towards both parties’ totals. The result, as of 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, was a total of 22,524,388 votes cast for Republicans and 19,594,164. Thus, based on our preliminary figures, just under 3 million more Americans voted for a Republican Senate candidate in the 2014 cycle than voted for a Democrat.

When the results from all three elections are combined, a total of 5,204,364 more votes were cast for Democrats than Republicans. To put that number in perspective, that’s nearly a quarter of a million more votes than the gap between the number of voters who supported President Obama in 2012 and the number that backed Republican Mitt Romney.

One caveat is in order, because votes are still being counted in the 2014 cycle, it is likely that the final margins between Democrats and Republicans will shift once the final vote tallies are released. Nevertheless, because the gap between Democratic votes cast and Republican votes cast during the three elections is very large — more than 5 million — it is extraordinarily unlikely that the 2014 numbers will shift enough to give Republicans a lead. In 2012, for example, ThinkProgress conducted a similar preliminary review of the total votes cast for U.S. House members, and determined that Democrats received slightly over half-a-million votes than Republicans in our preliminary tally. When all the ballots were cast, the actual gap between Democratic and Republican House candidates was closer to 1.4 million. Given that the shift from our preliminary tally in 2012 to the final tallies was less than one million votes, the chance that Republicans will make up a 5 million vote gap once all the ballots are counted is very small.

There are several possible explanations for how Republicans could enjoy a majority in the Senate when their candidates significantly underperformed their Democratic counterparts. One is the fundamentally anti-democratic nature of the Senate itself. Under the Constitution, each state receives two senators, regardless of population, which means that Wyoming residents effectively have 66 times as much representation in the Senate as Californians. In 2012, for example, 7,864,624 Americans voted to return Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) to the Senate. At the exact same time, Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) received just 185,250 to return him to the Senate. Yet Feinstein and Barrasso both get to cast exactly one vote in the Senate despite the fact that Feinstein represents far more people than Barrasso.

Another explanation is the fact that voter turnout in presidential elections is simply much higher than it is during midterm elections. Additionally, the 2014 electorate was older, whiter and richer than the voters who turned out in 2012 when President Obama was reelected. Many of the groups that are most likely to vote for Democrats simply did not turn out in 2010 and 2014, but the total pool of voters in these cycles was much smaller.

Readers: In my opinion the last two paragraphs of the write says it all. If you’re familiar with the nature of the Senate, and the example of that was given of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA)/ Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), you can see how more people can vote for a party but  that same party is not holding power. This never seemed right to me that they each have the same voting power.

With respect to the last paragraph, we all know that happened: The Dems didn’t show up.

Wow…I haven’t used that title in awhile! :) I’ve been trying to post. I updated this and lost my connection…but here is it (I HOPE) .

Good morning!

Readers: I didn’t say it yesterday, but I want to thank all of you for your continued support and involvement here and out in your world. And for YOUR efforts in getting out the vote, voting, and helping others to vote. It’s unfortunate there weren’t more of us.

Health Info: Yep, that’s what I heard. Looking forward to getting info from your new sources. Ah…the Huff Po now? :)

Mike, TM: Yes, it was and I am still feeling the affects from it. Yeah, it might be worth seeing the sting. Sometimes people have to learn the hard way just how good they had it. They just didn’t show up like the last midterms.

Two-thirds of registered voters didn’t vote. I don’t get it – It’s one day every two years to make some important decisions on how this country is going to be run, and how it is going to affect your livelihood. If you can’t make it on election day, vote early, and mail it in. How simple it really is, yet people, especially the younger ones and single ladies, just didn’t bother.

They weren’t motivated. The Dem party didn’t inspire them to vote. And they weren’t self motivated. Instead of motivating themselves, by getting involved, really looking at the issues and making informed decisions, they just didn’t go out and vote.

Well…we’ll see how bothered they get now.

Lacy: I agree with you. And the same people who don’t vote, complain when they get treated badly.

For example, places like Ferguson are a microcosm of the country. If the blacks had just went to the polls in the past they would most likely have a black mayor and a police department that was representative of their community. But they, like many other Americans, were lazy, and didn’t participate in the voting process year after year. Until one day they woke up to a city controlled by those who hated them and felt that they could do anything to them because they didn’t get involved in their local politics and didn’t vote. And the cops did just that. It is horrific.

However, I even blogged about it awhile ago when they same thing happened to another black boy,  Kajiema Powell in aother town close by to Ferguson, and the truth was all caught on video, (an even more horrific murder if you can say that). There was hardly any media coverage and not one person was protesting in the streets about this blatant murder. What happened there? What does that say?

I’ll say again what I blogged that day:

This may not be true but their actions say that the people aren’t really serious about putting an end to their boys getting murdered. The thugs tested their power again, and guess what? They can get away with murder again. They now know how far the public will go and sadly, it is short lived.

The thugs are relentless and ruthless. Change is not going to happen unless the people are relentless and ruthless too with their fight for justice.

In situations like this, people expect the world to come to their aid magically, when the solution was simple – get your asses to the polls. (In light of the midterm elections, I want to note that blacks did show up in large numbers!)

Now, I realize that it is very simplistic to say that all you need to do is vote. I said to Mike, TM above, “…that is is one day every two years…” But really, it is not just one day of voting, it is our daily work of getting involved and being informed, if we truly want what is best for our communities and our country.

Voting means that people have to keep up with the issues and that takes time, and many people are too lazy to get involved philosophically with what is going on around them. They see nothing beyond their daily needs. And to be frank, pathetically they are useless to themselves and despised by those who want to discard their politically useless asses. Too harsh? I feel I can say this because I was once pathetic and useless myself many years ago. Yes, I voted, but I had very little knowledge on what the issues were all about.

Daniel: You broached the topic I was going to bring up today: The lack of support from the Democratic politicians and especially throughout this campaigning cycle.

Why candidates thought that distancing themselves from the president, would garner them votes is just beyond logical thinking. The repubs did enough on their own to make their party look bad, not supporting Obama and touting all that he has done (and he has done a lot!) only made them (the repubs) look more appealing. Can you imagine?

I was on board for Grimes in Kentucky – I wanted McConnell out – but her not supporting Obama does not send the message to Obama supporters that she approved of him. And Grimes wasn’t the only one.

I am proud to be a Dem, but we have a party that doesn’t have the guts to stand up for what is right. The Dems ran away from supporting Obama. They thought that would get some of the republicans to vote for them. If they stuck to telling the people that what they were doing was right, (Obama needed to do more of this too - That was the mistake Obama made in the beginning of his term.)  they would have the people continually motivated to go for more.

Readers: It’s unfortunate they didn’t ride their campaigns on the above. But they abandoned Obama, they did not declare that what he was doing was good for the country. They hid from their accomplishments and expected the people to come out on their own to vote for them. How one would think that would bring about success…well, that logic escapes me. In the end, no guts got them what they got.

As you all know it isn’t just about voting. There is so much more to take into consideration: support and dedication, motivation, perseverance in the issues and wanting a better country for all…etc.

The Dems didn’t support Obama, Obama’s approval rate went down, voters didn’t feel that the party supported him, they weren’t self motivated to get involved in the issues, hence they decided to stay home instead of voting.

Like I said, it is a tall order. We are in a much lesser position of power now. When we had it pretty easy, we still didn’t come through, and yet Obama got a lot done. The opportunity (Obama) “presidented” itself, and we the people were not prepared. :) (Ahh…I can only dream of how great this country could’ve been if…)

Now, with the repubs in control, will the American people do it? Are we willing to put in the time? Will we get anything done that the Dems want, or will Obama be exercising his right to veto.  Yes, we’ll just have to wait and see. But so far we haven’t had to wait long –  I see the repubs are already getting on with all that they want to do. (deep sigh)

What are the results?

Good morning!

Well, if you don’t know by now, it isn’t great news. It would’ve been wonderful had we retained the Senate plus some, and I was counting on it..HOPEing for it. But we lost seats all around, and the repubs are now in control.

What was the issue? Did the Dems not show up? Was the problem the gerrymandering, SCOTUS making voter suppression the law of the land, and election day disenfranchising. Did you hear about Texas? Or a combination of all the above?

No other two term president (Bush, Clinton, Reagan,) has ever had his party in the majority in his 6th year of his presidency – I thought Obama would make it a first, but that is just me with my HOPE and wishful thinking. Still it is very disappointing.

And, I still can’t believe that after everything repubs Scott Walker in Wisconsin, and Rick Scott in Florida have done and said (not to mention Mitch McConnell), that they all won re-election (even after Walker moved!). Shocking.

Interesting how the minimum wage got passed in states (Thank you Elizabeth Warren for fighting hard for this one!), and yet the repubs gained control – the party that was against it.

All I can say is it will be an interesting last two years for Obama. We will see what we the people get when we sit on our asses. I think we will certainly hear what women will say when they truly see that the repub men didn’t value them nor their vote.

I spoke with  girlfriend, a Dem, who voted but was considering not voting. She said she had thought that if the repubs took over, well then maybe something would get done. You would never hear a repub say that if in the same situation. That’s the thing with some Dems, they want to get stuff done…they want to see movement in Congress, even if it isn’t what most people want, it’s something. And the repubs, they’ll just continue to be the party of no, and would rather get nothing done even if the people want it, just because they don’t want to see Obama successful.

I know that what I’m about to say might sound overly “rah-rah” since we just lost big time. But the last thing we want to do over the next 2 years is become complacent. I know…I know…if we can’t even get voters to the polls for one day, how can we rile them up, and excite them enough to participate continually to get what we want? I don’t know, but sitting on our asses is not going to do it.

So…What will Obama do? Will he define his last two years or will he let the repubs define it? I am HOPEing that Obama will take it on. My gut instinct is he will. But that means WE have to take it on too. Grassroots movements need to keep on keepin’ on in spite of who’s controlling Congress.

For example, if we don’t want Obamacare to be repealed (because the repubs will most certainly go after this again), or unnecessary tampering with medicare and medicaid…if we don’t want the Keystone pipeline, or if we women are fed up with losing our rights of our bodies, or if you care when the repubs don’t honor the minimum wage raise…this is the time for us to voice our opinions, and voice them loud.

If Obama feels that there is a mandate in any of these areas, he will listen. But we just have to shout loud enough, and not let this bring us down to where we do nothing.

It is a tall order. Will the American people do it? Are we willing to put in the time? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

OC: I must’ve read your comment at least a few times. I felt sick from reading it because it is all so true. I felt sick last night when I kept seeing another repub win. It just goes to show you how strong racism is and that the love of money is more important than peoples’ lives, that yes they will vote against their own best interest, or not engage or vote at all…and then blame Obama when nothing gets done.

I kept thinking we would pull through, that women really would wake up and take their lives in their own hands. But as you can see from the results, not much shakin’ of the tree went on.

Florida Voter: That’s part of the problem…people didn’t vote and went to bed.
