Conflict Minerals 101

Readers: Surprisingly this is the first time that I have seen this video. Knowing exactly how we acquire these minerals and exactly which ones we use every day, and knowing that every day women are killed because we have to be connected to the world, is really sickening.

We need to connect, no doubt. I am aware that without my computer I wouldn’t be able to connect with all of you. It is important. But how important is it to get a new cell phone every time the new model comes out? How important is it to get a new computer every few years?  And many do this just to keep up with the Joneses….impress their friends…brag.

Remember when things seem to last forever? Remember how we used to pride ourselves by saying how old something was and yet it still worked as if it was new? I want to go back to those days.

And not only do we have to be conscious of our purchases but the manufacturers need to get off their high tech horses, think past the profits, and consider the plight of women. Yes, I am speaking to you Apple. I love my MAC, but I love women more.

Shouldn’t everyone feel that way? Shouldn’t corporations do the right thing and put a stop to this murdering over minerals? You would think. But obviously if it is happening, and it is big time, they care little about the precious lives of women, and more about the piece of metal called “profit”.

Just this morning I received an e-mail from Apple: “New Mac. Free ipod touch – Last chance.” Just another way to tempt people to buy what they don’t need all because it is free. Women are dying because Apple is giving things away. Just how many women will die today so that you can have a free ipod?

I have said it before, that the corporations won’t change unless we stop supporting them by not purchasing their products. The lives of women are in our hands. How about keeping them out of our pockets and purses, and picking up a pen and writing a letter.

And how about explaining to your child why they’re not going to get a new computer this year? How about sending your child off to begin the school year with a little something different than most of the other kids? Send them off with their old computer and cell phone. Show your kid how un-cool it is to be carrying a conflict computer that is killing women and girls, and show them how cool they could be knowing that because they aren’t buying into the latest and greatest, THEY ARE SAVING LIVES. Now that is something to brag about.

Besides saying “No” to the “new”…there is another way – the no conflict way. Demand it.

Help us increase demand for conflict-free electronics. Urge the 21 biggest electronics companies to make their products conflict free. The message is clear: “If you take conflict out of your cell phone, I will buy it.”

Urge your friends to join you in coming clean for Congo. When the public cried out about blood diamonds, governments and the diamond companies listened. This could be even bigger. Your voice matters. Spread the word.

Urge your school to go conflict-free. Get your school to pass a resolution that publicly calls on electronics companies to make conflict-free computers and printers for your campus.

The Minneapolis-based retailer Target just gave over $150,000 to buy ads supporting state Rep. Tom Emmer, a far-right Republican candidate for governor. This makes Target one of the very first companies to take advantage of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision allowing unlimited corporate cash in elections.

That’s bad enough. But the stakes are much higher than one candidate and one company. If we don’t push back hard, this will just be the tip of the iceberg. Other corporations will learn that they can pour money into elections to buy the outcome they want. So we’re sending a message to Target’s CEO that we won’t shop there if Target continues spending money on elections.

Target must think customers won’t care. They’re wrong: We do care, and we need to let them know that we want Target — and all corporations — out of our elections. Can you join me in sending a message to Target’s CEO? Click here.

Readers: I went to Youtube to copy this video and as usual I scroll down to read the comments. Although there were a few comments applauding the video, I was appalled at how many negative comments were directed toward the appearance of the people who were in the video. Instead of applauding the fact that these people took their time to take a creative stance in telling Target that they were not happy with their shameless attempt to buy an election in Minnesota, people were making judgements about the quality of singing, the usage of the word “ain’t”, and they even sank low enough to criticize a woman for not shaving her armpits. These critics are probably the types that bitch and moan about our society, and sit on their butts doing nothing about it, but criticize others who are doing something about it.

It’s obvious from the video that shoppers in Target enjoyed it and who knows what kind of impact they had – perhaps Target shoppers will start thinking about the actions of corporations and take their money elsewhere. I’m happy to see that MoveOn thought their creative song and dance was cool and worthy of support. Enough for them to use it as a marketing tool to get us to sign a petition and send letters to Target’s CEO Greg Steinfahel. It got me to sign and send.

And really this is just the beginning – what we need to look at is the next step: Preventing corporations from being able to give unlimited corporate cash to the elections. We, the people, have the power to make the changes; we just have to do something, demand it…like these people in the video did.

As Frederick Douglass put it: “Power never concedes anything without a demand; it never has and it never will.”

Meanwhile those sitting on their butts bitching are doing more of the same same.

Hey Zen Lill: Who knows. That itself is sick enough. $5 a day toward cigarettes is a lot of money in Indo for many, and if he’s not willing to do what it takes to get his son to quit, then he’s going to have to earn money for his son’s nicotine addiction. It sound like he’s doing that because his son is now a tourist attraction; a money maker to support the habit.   A vicious cycle – The whole thing is disgusting.

So…how is everyone this morning?

I’ve been perusing the news; something I haven’t leisurely done in awhile. Usually I am so focused on finding something interesting and enticing to write about. Today I just clicked through and through wherever I felt and wherever it lead me. Kinda nice…

Elena Kagan is close to being confirmed. Today the Senate Judiciary Committee approved Elena Kagan to be the next Supreme Court Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of America. If confirmed, and I have no doubt she will be,  she will be the fourth female justice in the history of the Supreme Court. She even got a “yes” vote from a Republican Senator: Lindsay Graham. Surprisingly, Graham was the one and only Republican Senator who broke from his party to vote yes. I’m looking forward to seeing 3 females on the bench. I won’t congratulate her yet, but silently I am already giddy. :)

Hmm…what else? Oh yeah…Courtney Love. She says that her life changed when she received a gift of a Birkin Bag. Let me remind you, in case you’re not in the know…one of these bags cost around 7 grand. Now hey, if you can afford one, or afford to give someone one and it changes their life…wow, that’s a powerful bag.

Oh…so how did Love’s life change?

In the last half-year her decorum has entirely changed due to the handbag: “Having a Birkin even makes you read every part of the Emily Post etiquette book.”

Uh huh. Do you think the book helped?

Love remarked, “I got my first Birkin at age 45. It’s kind of tragic when you think about it. Next Birkin I’ll go to Paris and order it myself….It’s sort of like diamonds, though. Do you buy it yourself or do you let someone buy it for you?”

My response: “No the book didn’t help. If getting a Birkin Bag at age 45 is tragic, you need to wake up and see what is going on in this world. The BP spill is tragic. Dealing with daily atrocities in Darfur is tragic. Murder, rape and Racial violence is tragic. Unemployed and Losing your house is tragic. Get a life Love. Oh…and keep reading…perhaps pick up a newspaper every now and then.” I won’t even comment about the diamonds.

And something for our “four feet of happiness”: Leave it up to California to introduce a Pet Health Care Reform Bill:

Many feline and canine companions face health care challenges similar to those that confront humans. Veterinary care costs are skyrocketing as pet owners are offered a sophisticated menu of potentially lifesaving services, including kidney dialysis, sonograms and chemotherapy.

U.S. consumers spent more than $12 billion on veterinary care in 2009, according to The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Yet only about 1 percent of pet owners have health insurance for their animals. Those who do often don’t understand what the policy covers and what it excludes in an industry that has faced little regulation or even attention – at least until now.

Democratic state Assemblyman Dave Jones, who is running for state insurance commissioner in the November election, said some of the same practices being corrected by the recently enacted federal health care overhaul are used by pet insurance companies, including denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

Jones has introduced a bill that would make pet insurers post detailed information on their websites so consumers can see exactly what is covered and what is not. They could then compare options, just as if they were buying insurance for themselves in a post-health reform world.

“A number of pet owners have complained to me that they bought a policy, and they weren’t told about pre-existing conditions,” said Jones, who has two cats, Dragon and Blanca. He said others have attempted to buy policies but were told that because of pre-existing conditions in their pet, they couldn’t get pet insurance.

The bill also would mandate that an insurer disclose whether it will reduce coverage or increase premiums based on claims filed in the preceding policy period.

According to pet insurance companies and animal advocacy groups, Jones’ effort is the first of its kind in the nation. The bill passed the state Assembly and a Senate insurance committee. It currently awaits hearing before the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Oh…what a glorious day!

I am in a celebratory mood. If you have been reading my blog, you will notice that I write a lot about women. Most of the time I am writing about the plight of women because…well because there is so much to write about that I feel needs to be addressed and highlighted.

However, there is also a lot to write about when it comes to the accomplishments and successes that women around the world make too. And they too deserve to be addressed, highlighted, and celebrated.

Saturday is the dedicated day to celebrate women. I am calling it: “Wonderful Women Of The World”, and I will dedicate my Saturday write to this topic. Of course this doesn’t mean that I won’t write about wonderful women on other days if I feel like it too.

And it also means that I am not going to commit to every Saturday because it all depends on what mood I am in that day and what is happening in the world. Although Friday’s, are reserved for  ”Flap Your Lips Friday,” (and really  ”Flap Your Lips Friday” is more of a title, love the name, than it is a topic:) and Sunday’s are reserved for, “‘Just Noticing’: Observations Of A Blogger,” I do not always dedicate that day to the topic reserved for that day.

That being said, I will start this Saturday’s “Wonderful Women Of The World,” by honoring 2010 Miss Guam Universe crowned – Vanessa Siquenza Torres.

VANESSA Siguenza Torres, a 24-year-old beauty from Dededo, will be Guam’s representative for this year’s Miss Universe Pageant in Las Vegas.

The daughter of Rose Siguenza and Andrew Bautista and Manny Torres was crowned 2010 Miss Universe Guam, beating 11 other contestants during the pageant night held at the Sandcastle in Tumon on Wednesday.

Torres is now preparing for the Miss Universe pageant that will be held at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Vanessa also won the Cecilia Bamba Award, which recognizes community involvement and good academic performance.

In her official bio released by pageant organizers, Torres listed her voluntary work at the pediatric ward for the Guam Memorial Hospital as her “proudest personal accomplishment.” She painted cartoon characters on the walls of the pediatric ward, which she said “created a happier environment and showed patients that others cared for them and their situation with hope for the best outcome.”

Lalaine Mercado, 20, of Dededo, was named first runner up.

As first runner up, Mercado will represent the island in the Miss International pageant, which is going to be held in Chengdu, China in October.  Mercado also won best in native costume, best in swimsuit and best in evening gown.

Second runner up is Aysha Oner, 19, of Chalan Pago.  Natasha Guerrero, 17, of Barrigada, won Miss Photogenic; and Maerika Perez, 19, of Dededo/Yigo won Miss Congeniality.

Miss Universe Guam pageant spokesperson Marcia Damian said Torre’s answer to the question for the finalists may have made her the ultimate choice by the judges.

The question was “As the new Miss Universe Guam you will have a powerful voice, what issues will you address and what will your purpose be?”

Torres’s emphasized the cultural preservation of island, its language and history. “It is through our culture that the people have our own specific kind of identity and one way to continue that culture is through education in the schools and also at home. That’s one issue I would like to pursue as Miss Universe Guam,” she said.

Torre said she’s honored to have been selected to represent the island.

“It was something I didn’t expect at all to begin with and I feel very humbled and blessed they chose me,” she said, adding she will be working closely with Joyce Bamba, the Guam Visitors Bureau and the Guam Beauty Association, as well as her family, as she prepares for the main pageant.

Also helping her is Drew Murphy and close friends. “I call them Team MarVTorres,” she said.

She thanked her friends and family and Team MarVTorres for being there for her over the past few months. “They’ve helped me grow into the person I am today,” she said.

Ms. Torres is a  beauty! Congratulations to her, and good luck in the Miss Universe Pageant in Las Vegas!

Helen: I so hear what you are saying.  As I mentioned the other day, the big corps are reactionary instead of preventative, and it is the people, and other inhabitants that suffer from their ‘accidents’. And in regards to ‘accidents’, I think calling it that is just a lame excuse by the big corps. ‘Accidents’ in these type of situations, to me, are things that could not have been prevented. Many so-called ‘accidents’ that happen could have been prevented – their actions, or lack thereof, are just plain greedy, lazy, and irresponsible. That’s my two. :)

Liz: Your joke was cute, but I have to say that I am laughing more at the fact that I can see you are getting such a kick out of it.

Mildred: I am hoping that the sisters are right beside you and me pushing to get Kagan confirmed. Women are on a roll. There is no way men are going to turn back the clock – not on my watch. Oh…I just couldn’t resist. :)

Zen Lill: I did kind of feel that you wanted to say more than you did, so I am sorry that our conversation felt rushed the other day – we went through quite a few of subjects in record time. It seems a lot is going on in both of our lives and we just didn’t have enough time to chat about it all. Perhaps another phone call is due. I am here if you need a sounding board….or another good sweet swift ass kicking. I can do that too :)

Andrea: Thanks for your addition too, in regards to the movie. I wrote about this over two years ago….the ‘doomsday seed vault’, and briefly touched on ‘Eugenics’. I firmly believe that the whites are out to wipe out otws, and this action backed by Planned Parenthood does not surprise me at all. You seem to be in the know. Anything else you can tell us? Thanks.

Renee: It’s Hard to not agree with your statement when you see the state of our country. That video is…well I can’t even comment, because there are no words left for me to say how upset I am about this oil spill.
