The Pressure’s On

It’s down to the wire and yes the republicans are still the unanimous party that opposes health care reform, using the same same old fiscal excuses – how easy they can put a price on someone’s life when it is not their own.

And yesterday Stupak was still trying to get his strict anti-abortion say, slipped into the health care bill. Oh, how I wish Stupak would take a pregnant pause and leave his filthy paws out of business that doesn’t pertain to his sex.  Thankfully and hopefully the bill probably won’t need Stupak’s support.

Here’s the latest write from the Huff Po:

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama set his sights on Capitol Hill, ready to rally House Democrats on Saturday for a final health care push as party leaders appeared confident they had overcome a flare-up within their ranks over abortion funding restrictions in the legislation.

Building on Democrats’ momentum, the House Rules Committee worked to set the terms for floor debate and a final vote Sunday on Obama’s top priority and the focus of his first year in office.

The battle tilted in Obama’s direction Friday as more Democrats disclosed how they would vote.

Victory within reach, the president decided to make a final personal appeal with a Saturday afternoon visit to the Capitol. Republicans, unanimous in opposition to the bill, complained anew about its cost and reach.

Under a complex and disputed procedure the Democrats have devised, a single vote probably will be held to send one bill to Obama for his signature and to ship a second, fix-it measure to the Senate for a vote in the next several days.

“This process corrupts and prostitutes the system,” said Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, pleading with the Rules Committee head, Rep. Louise Slaughter, to allow separate votes on the underlying Senate bill and the fixes.

Slaughter, D-N.Y., chastised Barton, a GOP leader on health care, and said his party had “opted out” of co-operating on the legislation. “We have to get on with it,” she said.

Democratic leaders and Obama focused last-minute lobbying efforts on two groups of Democrats: 37 who voted against an earlier bill in the House and 40 who voted for it only after first making sure it would include strict abortion limits that now have been modified.

Leaders worked into Friday night attempting to resolve the dispute over abortion, and Saturday morning they were increasingly confident it would not scuttle the bill.

Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., who succeeded last November in inserting strict anti-abortion language into the House bill, had hoped to do so again. But Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., told The Associated Press leaders are closing in on the votes to pass the bill and probably won’t need Stupak’s backing. “That’s the likely outcome,” said Waxman, chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, and an author of the House bill.

Stupak’s office postponed a news conference the lawmaker had scheduled for Saturday morning.

Along with eight Democrats and one Republican as co-sponsors, Stupak had introduced a resolution Friday that would insert his abortion restrictions as a “correction” to the underlying bill. That would add new complications to the already complex strategy Democrats are pursuing to pass the bill, requiring additional votes on a highly charged issue. Abortion opponents are divided over whether restrictions on taxpayer funding for abortion already in the bill go far enough.

The vote count seemed to be breaking in Obama’s favor.

An abortion foe, Rep. Baron Hill, D-Ind., said Saturday announced he would support the bill. In addition, Reps. John Boccieri of Ohio, Scott Murphy of New York and Allen Boyd and Suzanne Kosmas of Florida become the latest Democrats to say they would vote “yes” after voting against an earlier version that passed last year. , bringing the number of switches in favor of the bill to seven.

On the other side of the ledger, Reps. Michael Arcuri of New York and Stephen Lynch of Massachusetts became the first Democratic former supporters to announce their intention to oppose the bill. Lynch said he did so despite a telephoned appeal from Vicki Kennedy, whose late husband, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., championed health care for decades.

Rep. Anh Cao of Louisiana, the only Republican to support the earlier measure, has announced his opposition, too.

The legislation, affecting virtually every American and more than a year in the making, would extend coverage to an estimated 32 million uninsured, bar insurers from denying coverage on the basis of existing medical conditions and cut federal deficits by an estimated $138 billion over a decade.

Congressional analysts estimate the cost of the two bills combined would be $940 billion over a decade.

For the first time, most Americans would be required to purchase insurance, and they would face penalties if they refused. Billions of dollars would be set aside for subsidies to help families at incomes of up to $88,000 a year afford the cost. The legislation also provides for an expansion of Medicaid that would give government-paid health care to millions of the poor.

Republicans resorted to unusually personal criticism in their struggle against the bill, calling Kosmas a “space cadet” after she announced her position and labeling Pennsylvania Rep. Jason Altmire a “drama queen” for waiting to announce his opposition.

Zen Lill: I can not imagine someone that you know actually saying to you that they didn’t think health care is a right everyone should have.  My question would’ve been, ‘And why not?’ I would love to hear her answer that one.

The Health Care March Is On: Day 6

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 16th March 2010

I hope that all of you have been participating in some form or another these past five days to get heath care passed. If not, it’s not too late to start at Day 1 and due your duty. If so, join me in Day 6. This e-mail was sent in regards to the town I live in, but I’m sure if you’re in the loop, like I hope you are, you got one too:

Great news: This weekend’s events were a huge success. OFA volunteers all over the country helped tens of thousands of voters in key districts speak out for reform.

Phones have been ringing off the hook in Capitol Hill offices for days, but with everything on the line and so little time left, we have to bring our voice to Congress through every possible channel.

So today, OFA supporters are taking the next step in the Final March for Reform: Writing to Congress.Using our online tool, it just takes a few minutes to write and send your own letter directly to Rep. Barbara Lee.

Right now, Congress is under attack from insurance lobbyists who are trying to drown us out, so we’ve set a goal of 70 letters from Emeryville to make sure our message breaks through.

Can you help? Get started here.

In the days ahead, we’ll keep you up-to-date on the latest news on
health reform as it breaks — so keep checking your email. But right now, please make sure supporters of reform in Congress continue to hear our thanks for their efforts — and that everyone hears their constituents’ overwhelming support for reform. Click here to write your letter:

Readers: This one is simple. The sample letter is there for you to just sign if you choose. But know that you will always have more of an impact, if the letter is personal. Take a few minutes and tell your representative why passing health care is important to you. Do it. Thank you.  (Oh…PS this is actually Day 7 today but when I began to write early yesterday morning, Day 6 was not available for me to see yet. If Day 6 is a done deal for you, feel free to move onto Day 7.)

Anna: I am delighted for you. I wish Obama would come and visit here. I would love to see him and Michelle up close.

Clyde: I am so sorry that your cousin got scammed. That is just a shame. I hope that my write prevents others from getting scammed too.

Glen: I only saw your first comment and didn’t see your second so I went perusing the net looking for the article too, only to realize that you posted the exact one that I found too. Thanks. Alice: Thanks too for bringing this up – this is exactly the type of thing Anonz is referring to, and I agree with both of you. We have to take action and be diligent about it to get what we want.

The Health Care March Is On: Day 1

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 11th March 2010

Bookmark and Share

Okay…It’s really Day 2, but let’s start at the beginning, shall we? Don’t know what’s going on with me these days but I’ve been a day late for about a week now. :)

I mentioned to you a few days ago that we are getting down to the wire with health care reform passing. We need to take it to the end and bring health care reform home…literally…home to the many people who are living without it. If you have health care – great, let’s make sure that everyone can have it too. Can you do that?

The House is now expected to hold its final vote as soon as one week from today, so we only have a week left to really push for reform. Big Pharma insurance-industry lobbyists are up to no good, planning a big blitz at the Ritz to block reform, while simultaneously jacking up rates by as much as 60% for small businesses and families across the country. Our premium went up 30% last year. If it goes up again, I like many may not be able to afford it. Health care will be a luxury and that is just wrong.

Here’s a note from our president:

So starting today, we’re launching an unprecedented week-long campaign sprint — our “Final March for Reform.” Each day until the vote, we’ll feature a powerful new way for OFA supporters to speak out in our communities and weigh in directly with Congress.

Today, we’ll start by spreading the facts about reform in our communities. Smears and falsehoods have clouded this debate — Congress must understand that if they pass reform, their constituents will know the truth about what we’ve finally achieved

“At this moment, we are being called upon to fulfill our duty to the citizens of this nation  and to future generations… I don’t know how passing health care will play politically, but I do know that it’s the right thing to do. It’s right for our families. It’s right for our businesses. It’s right for the United States of America.”

– PRESIDENT OBAMA

THE PRESIDENT’S PLAN FOR HEALTH REFORM

Americans across this country agree that our health care system is broken: Unaccountable insurance companies ration care, soaring premiums cripple the budgets of our businesses and families, and vital care remains out of reach for far too many. The time for change has come. President Obama’s final proposal incorporates the best ideas from both parties to put Americans in control of our own health care.

HERE’S WHAT THE PRESIDENT’S PLAN FOR HEALTH REFORM WILL DO:

PROTECT AMERICANS FROM INSURANCE COMPANY ABUSES

• You will never be denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions

• You will never be hit with arbitrary premium hikes

• You will never see your coverage revoked just when you get sick or injured

• You will never face unlimited out-of-pocket expenses for your care

GUARANTEE AFFORDABLE CHOICES

• If you like your current doctor and you like your current plan, you keep them

• Uninsured individuals and small business owners will become part of a powerful negotiating pool, just like members of Congress and other federal employees, lowering prices and increasing choice

• Struggling middle-class families will receive a tax credit to make coverage even more affordable – the largest middle class tax cut for health care in history

REDUCE THE COST OF CARE FOR OUR FAMILIES, BUSINESSES

AND THE GOVERNMENT

• We’ll save billions of dollars every year by reducing waste and abuse in our current system

• We’ll save and create millions of jobs, raise wages and strengthen the economy

• We’ll cut the deficit by nearly $1 trillion over two decades

Readers: I know we all have so much to do in our lives but can you make some time for something that is so important to the people of our country?

Here’s the above info in flyer form in pdf to print out and pass out: pres-plan.php To download all of the flyers and posters to get the word out click here. You can even Facebook and Twitter notes to post, for those of you that are into social networking. And who isn’t these days? :) Spread the good word. All of the tools are here; all you need to do is give a few minutes of your time and more if you can.

As our president says, “We’re on the verge of solving a crisis that has vexed our nation for generations — and eluded the best efforts of seven previous Presidents. But our opponents will stop at nothing to distort the President’s proposal and derail our progress. It may all come down to what we do together this week. Today, it’s time to show the insurance lobbyists that no smear campaign cooked up at a posh hotel can match the power of millions of regular citizens who are ready for change and committed to the truth.”

Ranting is great for releasing; reform requires action –  do something. Thanks for caring.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my ‘loyal’(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. International Women’s Day

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 9th March 2010

Bookmark and Share

International Women’s Day was yesterday. I’m embarrassed, being that I am such a supporter of women, that I didn’t realize this special day until yesterday after I posted my blog. My apologies to all of the women out there.

It seems that I get so caught up in the abuse and second class treatment of women, by men (not all men), that I neglected to step back and take a break, realize this special day, and honor those same women that I speak about and support. But I will say, one day isn’t enough…not even close.

I found this article that I wanted to share with you:

Admit it or not but we are living in a paternalistic society where males rule over females. Some communities have women seen as less people than men with less rights and privileges.

However, in celebration of the International Womens Day 2010, all men are set to give recognitions to all women in the world for their outstanding contributions in every aspect of the society from politics and business to fashion world.

International Womens Day is an annual celebration which is very similar to Mother’s Day celebration. Men are seen giving gifts, admirations, and flowers to their mothers, girlfriends, wives, sisters, daughters, nieces, and to all women in the world.

In celebration of International Womens Day 2010 in the US, President Barack Obama delivered a speech at theInternational Womens Day reception highlighting several contributions of women in the history of America despite the existing inequalities between men and women including statistics that show “how women just earn 77 cents for every dollar men make; how one in four women is the victim of domestic violence at some point in her life; how women are more than half the population, but make up only 17 percent of the seats in Congress, and less than 3 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs.”

In addition, he also mentioned one of the very first law that he signed which was pro women – the Ledbetter Bill – which gave equal salaries for those women who can do the same work as men do.

Men and women are created equal by God. We are all human beings which deserves respect. Often we value women less than men because of the paternalistic nature of the society but through this International Womens Day 2010 celebration, people are (sic) ought to recognize that men need women and that they should be given equal rights and priorities in this world.

I have issue with the second sentence in the first paragraph: “Some communities have women seen as less people than men with less rights and privileges.” Helloo…wake up. ’Some communities have women seen‘? Like the second class treatment of women is some small community issue?  And how are women seen as less than men? As if it is an opinion and not a fact. Women aren’t ‘seen’ as less people than men, they are treated that way!

How about saying: “Some countries treat women as less people than men with less rights and privileges.” Now that is a fact, and if we want to be totally truthful, you would say, “Countries treat women as less people than men with less rights and privileges.”  Because I don’t know of any country that treats women as equals in every way to men. Do you? If you do, blog me.

I also have issue with the last paragraph, especially with the sentence “Often we value women less than men because of the paternalistic nature of the society…”

paternalism |p??t?rnl?iz?m|nounthe policy or practice on the part of people in positions of authority of restricting the freedom and responsibilities of those subordinate to them in the subordinates’ supposed best interest : the arrogance and paternalism that underlies cradle-to-grave employment contracts.

That sentence is so matter of fact. How easily one can describe a  woman’s place in society in one simple sentence, as if it’s no big deal that women are treated and considered this way. Let’s give women a day…give them a day where we can recognize, revere and respect them- just a day though.

‘Paternalistic’ may be our present society but is it the ‘nature’ of the society? Is it inevitable, unavoidable? No, this was and is a grand creation, scheme if you will, well thought out, by men. There is nothing ‘natural’ about women being labeled in our society as ‘subordinates’ to men…there is nothing ‘natural’ about men ‘restricting our freedom and responsibilities’…there is nothing ‘natural’ about a man deciding a woman’s fate by claiming that he is acting ‘supposedly’ out of her ‘best interest’.  We all know that our best interest is not considered at all, otherwise men would heed our needs. Men, not all, think mostly of themselves, and revere and respect mostly other men.

Ok…stop me before I get off on men, on a day (more than one:) that I want to revere women.

Let me just add, that I actually have issue with the entire article. Even in an article honoring women the individual can’t tell it like it truly is. The revealing part is this article was written by a woman. Just where is the passion in the support and admiration for her sisters?

Here’s a story that not only gives us  a perfect example of men treating a woman as a ‘subordinate’ and ‘restricting’ her ‘responsibilities’ and ‘freedom’ to learn, but more importantly of women supporting women. This story is about a woman who didn’t give up because of the encouragement and support of another woman.

Sometimes, if we’re very fortunate, we meet the one person who will forever change the course of our lives. Working in the Planning Unit of the Ministry of Education in Malawi I met mine.

I met Nwanganga Shields, a Nigerian woman who was heading the World Bank team that was working on the Education and Health programmes in Malawi. I could not believe that this African woman had so much power; every time she sent a message that she was bringing her team to Malawi everybody in the Ministry was running around preparing for her visit.

She requested that I work for her, and with every meeting she gave me more challenging work–including me in the studies and giving me more responsibilities on the ground.

One day she said to me, “If you are doing this work without training then you need to go to graduate school.” She found a place for me at the George Washington University at the School of Education. The battle now was to convince the men in the Ministry to let me go.

She noticed that when we had meetings, I was always sent to go and inform the kitchen to bring the tea. One day as I stood up in the meeting she asked me why I was going to call for the tea when I needed to contribute to the meeting. She said this is the last time you are doing tea duty, you have a degree and you are going to graduate school. She asked the meeting if anybody had an objection, everybody was quiet. She said she would take it as agreement since nobody had objected. Nwanganga is an African woman and she knew that there was no agreement, the men around the table were just shocked and stunned.

After she left, I was called and informed that I would not be going to graduate school at the George Washington University — I was devastated. I believed I wanted an American education because I wanted to be like Nwanganga Shields, fearless, confident, knowledgeable and proud to be African. In all the time I knew Nwanganga, and even though she was married to an Irishman, I had never seen her put on western clothes! She was so proud to be African, even though her views and attitude were completely western.

I was so crushed to be calling Nwanganga to tell her that I would not be taking my place at George Washington as planned. I should have known this fearless, determined woman would not be stopped. Nwanganga immediately sent me to the British Airways office where she had a ticket to America waiting for me.

It took a month after I arrived, but she managed to convince the Ministry to allow me to start school. She helped me find a place to stay, she got me a tutor to learn even basic skills like keyboarding, and she got me a job at the World Bank so that I could continue to work on research projects.

Every time I was homesick or discouraged she would invite me to her house and cook me African food and remind me that it was important that I succeed for the sake of other Malawian women who had never been given the same opportunity because of the assumption that they couldn’t do it.

She not only inspired me to strive to be like her, she inspired me to fight to open doors for other women.

If this one woman had not made that decision to fight so that I could go to graduate school I would have never left Malawi. I owe that one woman my education. Because of her I have educated my own children, and because of her my daughters do not think they might go to graduate school, they know they will. And because of this woman, every time a woman tells me that she wants to do something and there is a stumbling block in front of her, I start looking for solutions right away.

Nwanganga showed me that you should stop at nothing to open a door for a fellow woman. My way of saying thank you to her is helping other women the way she helped me. I took the job as Head of Raising Malawi Academy for Girls because it gives me the opportunity to do for hundreds of girls what Nwanganga did for me.

What an opportunity, to be able to say thank you to Nwanganga over and over again.

I hope that one day, when Raising Malawi Academy for Girls is open she will come to Malawi and speak to the girls in the school and give them the same inspirational talks she gave to me.

To women: I recognize you. I revere you. I respect you. I love you.

‘Just Noticing’: Observations Of A Blogger

Helena: How are you? Thank you for your well thought out comments. Sadly you are correct, and I agree with you. And counting on that one third to join them may not be a very difficult thing because that one third, like the republican one third, is so dying to be part of that 4%.

‘Persuaded’ is the key word here. The republicans not only ‘persuade’ them that the Republican one third of the country has their and the country’s best interest at (sic) hand, but they get them to dream too. Get them to dream…put promise in their little heads, that  they too will attain riches and the lifestyle that they covet. And they will continue to follow the republicans, and act and do whatever it takes to make it to that 4% club. And as we know…all at the expense of the American people.

And I agree too, I hate the control. My finances are affected too like so many others.  But I don’t disagree with Anonz’s actions either. If I were in Anonz’s position, I too would do what he is doing or someone else will step in. That is a fact. But as Anonz has pointed out  on my blog,  “Most of you allow us to continue without having to pay our fair share of taxes because you think that one day you will be part of our group. Here’s a fact. You will NEVER be in my economic class.”

So there you have it for those of you desiring it: “Dream on. It isn’t going to happen.” Look around. Your greed is driving the country into shambles, and I bet you’re not any wealthier, are you? The top 4% are laughing all the way to the bank…with your money…literally.

Anonz made this comment awhile ago: “Obama needs to take a more aggressive action and authorize the surreptitious extinction of such traitors. The one thing those greedy bastards fear more than losing an opportunity to make money is losing their lives. Do It Obama.”

Whether he’s talking about terrorists or the terrorists that are in our own government, doesn’t really matter. My point being, lives are being lost daily because of the lack of health care. But those that oppose don’t care. So…Why shouldn’t the greedy bastards be in fear of losing their lives too.

And since I’m on the subject, and on a roll this morning, I decided to re-read some of the comments that Anonz has made in regards to the state of the world and what we,  the American people, can do about it.

I’m sure Anonz won’t mind if I post the rest of what he said that day on my blog. The things that I fight for here…for others, I fight for myself too.  I think we all need to read his words again and feel the impact of them. Our world situation is dire. November is nearing.

How inane are you people?

You support the party and people who make all this happen while screaming at us who benefit from the actions of those people.

I am not the problem.

You are.

If I die tomorrow, someone else will move in to fill the vacuum. You will still be part of that 96% who own shit in this country.

AH, while I respect your wisdom and financial insight, the fact is you are out of touch with present day reality. The people of America today are so into themselves that they could care less about the health needs of their fellow americans as long as they have health care for themselves and theirs.

The insurance and pharmaceutical industries count on that greed and selfishness to enable them to stay in power. I refuse to align myself with losers. If there is a pot to be split up, I will always be there to demand my share.

My advice to the people – stand for something other than your own aggrandizement.

If you support politicians who support the general welfare of ALL the people, you will get your fair share. If you continue to support the politicians who support only your special interest, you will continue to get people in office who will say anything to get your support and then sell out to the highest bidder,

If that winning bidder turns out to be me, don’t hate me, hate the person responsible for putting a person before me who could be bought, that would be your selfish, self-centered, racist, bigoted asses.

As that great black poet said “hate the game not the player.”

Anonz

I hate the game. I hate hearing it so bluntly, but I appreciate his directness.  What Anonz says is true and needs to be expressed the way he said it. And sometimes as difficult as the truth is, we need to hear it, again, and again, and again, for it to sink in…for us to wake up and do something.

If everyone just thought outside of themselves, we could do something amazing. I know…hard to imagine…but I can still hope can’t I? I can still give my two in hopes that some of you out there will feel as passionate as I do about changing the system, by taking the present one on.

Thanks Helena for inspiring my write this morning. I hope that you show your family my write and they will continue to support Obama.

And since this is Sunday, my usual day for ‘just noticing’….I thought these were appropriate for today:

  • ‘Just noticing’…that many people tend to only fight for their own needs, for their own aggrandizement, and could care less about the rest of the country.
  • ‘Just noticing’…that we spend billions in Iraq and on homeland security to protect the American people, yet it is a fight to get decent health care for everyone to protect those same people. Why? Because the rich don’t go to war, and terrorists don’t pay attention to whether the poor or the rich are in the line of fire, so all must be protected. And those that oppose…those that are healthy and/or can afford good health care, basically don’t give a damn about those that aren’t and can’t.

No judgement….’just noticing’.

Readers: Okay….trying to ‘just notice’, but this time I couldn’t help but be a tad judgemental. Comments? Blog me.

Tilly: And that is just one example. I’m sure there are many more that we don’t even hear about.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my ‘loyal’(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog.
