My friend Mirna posted this on my Facebook page in response to my FaceBook post, that I tweeted last week. Thank you Mirna!

Since  I have been posting about sick men so much lately, this is kind of refreshing, don’t you think? In my opinion, this is a clarion call to men to break the complicit silence and do something to support women by challenging the men that abuse women.

Jackson Katz: Violence against women—it’s a men’s issue

Jackson Katz asks a very important question that gets at the root of why sexual abuse, rape and domestic abuse remain a problem: What’s going on with men?

Jackson Katz is an educator, author, filmmaker and cultural theorist who is a pioneer in the fields of gender violence prevention education and media literacy. He is co-founder of Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), which enlists men in the struggle to prevent men’s violence against women. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, MVP has become a widely used sexual and domestic violence prevention initiative in college and professional athletics across North America. Katz and his MVP colleagues have also worked extensively with schools, youth sports associations and community organizations, as well as with all major branches of the U.S. military.

Katz is the creator of popular educational videos including Tough Guise: Violence, Media and the Crisis in Masculinity. He is the author of The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help and Leading Men: Presidential Campaigns and the Politics of Manhood. He has also appeared in several documentaries, including Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes andMissRepresentation.

Readers: Part of the problem is that men are always going to think they are better than women because they believe, because they have been told, that they were created in the image of God. No one seems to discuss that part. As long as men think this, they will think they are better than women, and women will be treated as less than.

Good morning!

I feel like all I keep saying is how sick some men can be. But then I keep reading writes that proves it over and over again. There’s never not enough news to be written on this subject to keep my blog busy. And I keep posting them because I am so sick (there’s that word again) of reading them over and over and not seeing much progress in changing this extremely bad attitude and behavior of men.

Is anyone feeling the same same? Are we just getting so used to it, that nothing is surprising anymore, because it is so damn prevalent in our society?I’m not used to it – never will be. It still sickens me and shocks me. Especially when I don’t see the outrage that should be heard on a daily basis from women and men when men say such sick things?

Let me be blunt here. When will women get that some men just think we are a receptacle to drop their load in? They want to put us back on the shelf for use whenever they are horny and need their needs met, or they need to be waited on. When will women learn that we need to stick together because men are always waiting in the wings to divide and conquer?

Here it is. Plain and simply said on FOX News: Men suggesting that women are inferior.

All-Male Fox Panel Freaks Out About Female Breadwinners

The all-male panel on Wednesday’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight” was in total agreement about the deep danger posed to society by women bringing home the bacon.

The Fox Business host fulminated about a recently released Pew study which showed that women were the sole or primary breadwinners in four out of ten households with children. There have been many nuanced reactions to the study, but Dobbs and his guests agreed that it was a complete catastrophe for the country.

Juan Williams said it was “something going terribly wrong in American society, and it’s hurting our children, and it’s going to have impact for generations to come.”

Fellow guest Erick Erickson said it was a downright repudiation of nature itself.

“When you look at biology, look at the natural world, the roles of a male and a female in society, and other animals, the male typically is the dominant role. The female, it’s not antithesis, or it’s not competing, it’s a complementary role. We as people in a smart society have lost the ability to have complementary relationships in nuclear families, and it’s tearing us apart.”

“The politicians won’t say it,” Williams said. “They won’t admit this!”

At no point were women invited to share their thoughts.

UPDATE: One woman, Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren, reacted with disbelief:

Have these men lost their minds? (and these are my colleagues??!! oh brother… maybe I need to have a little chat with them if it isn’t too late….)

Greta: You act so surprised like you didn’t know these men were like they are. Hello…do you ever listen to half the stuff that comes from their mouths or are you just usually in agreement with them? I mean you do work for FOX news. I don’t watch enough of FOX, and I honestly don’t know anything about you, except that you work for FAUX news and that says a lot. Perhaps you are just waking up and realizing just how sick they are. If so, you have no excuse to not be on their case about a lot more than this. They most likely will not change but it is never too late to stand up for your sisters and be a loud voice. I’m happy you did this time. I HOPE you continue to.

Readers: The panel is freaking out. I’m freaking out over their sick attitude. What should be in large letters across America is how men’s attitude and behavior is ruining our society. Not that women are earning more and it’s hurting our children. What’s hurting our children is allowing men and boys to run around with 30 magazine guns killing our children at will. Whats hurting our children is the pedophile men who prey on them. That’s what is tearing apart our society, not female breadwinners. When will men take responsibility for their sick actions, instead of once again blaming women for how messed up our society is?

Sick. How many times did I use that word this morning? There’s plenty more to say about this panel’s discussion. Your turn. Blog me.

Another good write from ThinkProgress. It seems their writes have been at the top of my radar lately, and rightly so. They are worthy of blog space.

Salvadoran Woman Has Been Denied A Life-Saving Abortion Even Though Her Fetus Is Missing Its Brain

El Salvador’s Supreme Court has decided to deny a 22-year-old woman a lifesaving abortion, ruling against making a medical exception to the conservative nation’s stringent abortion ban. Without an abortion, the woman will likely die — along with her nonviable fetus, which is missing its brain.

Identified in the press only as “Beatriz,” the young Salvadoran woman suffers from a chronic health condition that worsens when she is pregnant, and her doctors have warned that she is at “high risk of death” if she continues to carry her fetus. Several ultrasounds have revealed that, even if Beatriz does survive to carry the fetus to full term, it has virtually no chance of survival because it has no brain.

Beatriz has been fighting for an abortion for the past three months, and several international human rights organizations have taken up her case. But it’s been an uphill battle in her deeply Catholic nation, where abortion is illegal under absolutely all circumstances and punishable by up to 30 years in prison. After El Salvador’s attorney general refused to grant Beatriz and her doctors an exception to the harsh law, the pregnant woman turned to the Supreme Court.

And on Wednesday, the highest court in the country denied Beatriz permission to access the medical care that would save her life. El Salvador’s Supreme Court took several weeks to deliberate Beatriz’s case in consultation with the Institute of Legal Medicine, which advises the court on medical issues. The Institute determined that Beatriz’s health “was not yet in absolute danger.”

There are no options left. “We cannot appeal the case because this was the last step, the Supreme Court,” Victor Hugo Mata, the lawyer representing Beatriz, told CBS News.

Beatriz has been hospitalized for the last several months, separated from her husband and 14-month-old son. And even though the country’s Institute of Legal Medicine claims that Beatriz isn’t in critical condition yet, a group of her doctors have warned that her health is deteriorating daily. Earlier this month, Beatriz recorded a personal appeal to her president to intervene and save her life. “President Mauricio Funes Cartagena, help me please,” she begged. “This baby inside me cannot survive. I am ill. I want to live… I want to live for my son.” That help has not come for Beatriz.

“It’s a situation where the risk increases as time goes on — and a lot of the risks could have been avoided if the Salvadoran government had reasonable regulations in place that when the life of the mother is at risk, the health of the mother is threatened, there would be an exception to their outright ban on abortions,” Larry Ladutke, an Amnesty Internationl specialist on El Salvador, explained.

Lilian Sepúlveda, the global legal program director at the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement that the Supreme Court’s decision to deny Beatriz a life-saving abortion is “an appalling and disgraceful violation of her fundamental human rights” and pointed out that “Salvadoran women have been paying an unacceptably high price for El Salvador’s abortion ban.” Unfortunately, this isn’t unique to Beatriz’s country. Around the world, thousands of women die every year because they lack access to safe reproductive care. Even here in the United States, where women have the right to legal abortion services, anti-choice lawmakers have still successfully imposed barriers to reproductive care — even in similar situations as Beatriz’s, when women are carrying fetuses with no brain function.

And then you’ve got women such as Lila Rose, president of the anti-abortion activist group Live Action, who said the case has not convinced her that abortion should be allowed under any circumstances. Gee, thanks Lila for your support. You are certainly a girl’s girl. I wonder if you would say the same same thing if it were your life about to be lost for a baby that is brain dead and won’t survive.

Who else wants to make what’s under my skirt their business? Who else wants to rile me up and try and make decisions over my body, my life? Anybody? Oh yeah, don’t let me forget the good ‘ol GOP -  They have their two to throw in. Actually more than two.

Here’s 5 lies the LSOS GOP’s like to tell about women’s bodies.

“As a man, would it interest you to know that Dr. Brownstein just published an article that links the pill to prostate cancer?” state Rep. Jeanine Notter (R) asked a male representative at the hearing, the Merrimack Patch reports.

“In the children that are born from these women?” he asked. Notter could not clearly explain the study or how the pill results in prostate cancer.

The study described in the newsletter of Dr. David Brownstein, a physician and holistic practitioner in Michigan, suggests men may ingest estrogen through environmental contamination, not in utero from mothers taking birth control. An author of the study told ABC News, “This is just a hypothesis-generating idea. Women should not be throwing away the pill because of this.”

Materials that inform the pregnant woman that there is a direct link between abortion and breast cancer. It is scientifically undisputed that full-term pregnancy reduces a woman’s lifetime risk of breast cancer. It is also undisputed that the earlier a woman has a first full-term pregnancy, the lower her risk of breast cancer becomes, because following a full-term pregnancy the breast tissue exposed to estrogen through the menstrual cycle is more mature and cancer resistant. In fact, for each year that a woman’s first full-term pregnancy is delayed, her risk of breast cancer rises 3.5 percent. The theory that there is a direct link between abortion and breast cancer builds upon this undisputed foundation. During the first and second trimesters of pregnancy the breasts develop merely by duplicating immature tissues. Once a woman passes the thirty-second week of pregnancy (third trimester), the immature cells develop into mature cancer resistant cells. When an abortion ends a normal pregnancy, the woman is left with more immature breast tissue than she had before she was pregnant.

Most women who have had sex have used contraception. Birth control pills — which are taken daily, regardless of how frequently a woman has sex — may also be taken to manage endometriosis, ovarian cysts, acne or other health problems. A bill in Arizona proposed penalizing women who use the pill for non-medical reasons.

Justice Scalia: Ensuring Innocent People Get Out Of Prison Is A ‘Faustian Bargain’

A man who may be locked up for a murder he did not commit should not be allowed to challenge his conviction, according to Justice Antonin Scalia and his three most conservative colleagues. And three members of the Supreme Court seem to believe that most people jailed due to unconstitutional convictions should have no recourse to the federal courts. At least, that’s what emerges from a four justice dissenting opinion written by Scalia in a case dealing with the rights of state prisoners who may be “actually innocent” of the crime they were convicted of committing.

McQuiggin v. Perkins is a fairly unusual case. After being sentenced to life in prison for murder, Floyd Perkins spent years gathering three affidavits from witnesses corroborating his claim that another man committed the crime. Yet he sat on this new evidence for nearly six years before presenting it to a federal court. Justice Scalia’s dissent claims that a one year statute of limitations prevents Perkins from presenting six year-old evidence that he may be innocent. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s majority opinion holds that “actual innocence” may overcome this one year time limit, although she also requires prisoners in Perkins’ shoes to overcome a very high bar before their claims of innocence may succeed in federal court.

Beyond the narrow issue presented by this case, however, the final paragraphs of Scalia’s opinion — three paragraphs that conservative Justice Samuel Alito pointedly chooses not to endorse — suggest a massive contraction of prisoners’ rights. Earlier in his opinion, Scalia claims that state prisoners’ right to challenge their conviction in federal court was “radically expanded in the early or mid-20th century to include review of the merits of conviction and not merely jurisdiction of the convicting court.” This is likely a reference to a controversial theory, championed by a young future Chief Justice William Rehnquist and later promoted by a conservative law professor named Paul Bator, that federal courts traditionally could not overrule state convictions so long as the defendant enjoyed minimal safeguards such as “counsel to argue all his points to the trial court, [access to] the state appellate courts” and the ability to seek Supreme Court review.

Scalia’s final paragraphs claim that the practice of allowing broad challenges to unconstitutional state convictions, including cases where a state prisoner may in fact be innocent, was a “Faustian bargain that traded the simple elegance of the common-law writ of habeas corpus for federal-court power to probe the substantive merits of state-court convictions.” As Scalia warns, permitting state prisoners to challenge their conviction in federal court leads to “floods of stale, frivolous and repetitious petitions [which] inundate the docket of the lower courts and swell our own.”

Justice Scalia is correct that judges have to do more work if potential innocents are allowed to seek vindication. Unlike prisoners locked up for crimes they did not commit, however, those judges will also get to go home every day.

Readers: How cold and cruel can you be. It is so easy to just leave an innocent person in prison when it is not you or someone you care about that is innocently left behind bars with no recourse. Can you believe that Scalia is more concerned about inundating the docket of the courts, than the livelihood of innocent people in jail? Yep, I can believe it. The more I read about Zuckerberg, the more I don’t like him.

 ”…the social media network allows users to post images of domestic violence against women, while banning advertisements about women’s health.”

Zuckerberg et al could have such a positive influence for women in the platform of Facebook. Hellooo Sheryl Sandberg! In my opinion, this is where you really need to “lean in.”

Grassroots Campaign Pressures Facebook Over Rape, Assault Imagery

More and more companies are dropping Facebook advertising over the social network’s refusal, heretofore, to address offensive imagery about rape and domestic violence posted by its users. More than a dozen companies have now dropped ads because of Facebook’s apparently permissive attitude toward images like this.

When asked about their policy, a Facebook spokesperson told ThinkProgress that content featuring battered women, rape, and violence falls under “poor taste” or “crude attempts at humor” and therefore does not violate its policies.

Meanwhile, just this weekend Facebook rejected an ad aimed at debunking the false claim that abortion leads to breast cancer because the ad featured the image of a breast. Facebook claimedthe educational ad violated a ban on “adult products.”

The ad boycott has been gaining steam as a result of a grassroots campaign launched last week by Women, Action & the Media, the Everyday Sexism Project and other activists. According to Women, Action & the Media, “participants sent over 60,000 tweets and 5000 emails, and our coalition has grown to over 100 women’s movement and social justice organizations.”

This is not the first time in recent weeks that Facebook has come under pressure from progressives. After Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg founded and bankrolled a political group backing immigration reform that instead spent millions of dollars on ads touting dirty energy production and the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, progressive groups launched their own ad boycott and even held a protest outside Facebook’s headquarters. Facebook further enraged activists when it then banned ads going after Zuckerberg on the issue. The Zuckerberg group,FWD.us, also came under fire from others in Silicon Valley and two of its founding members — and top funders — dropped out of the group in protest.

BOTTOM LINE: Imagery celebrating rape and domestic violence is not merely in “poor taste” or just a “crude attempt at humor.” It’s time for Facebook to get serious about addressing the offensive and violent imagery posted by some of its users and to learn the difference between “adult content” and educational materials.

Late Breaking Update: Just as we were about to click send, Women, Action & the Media announced an agreement with Facebook:

Facebook addressed our concerns and committed to evaluating and updating its policies, guidelines and practices relating to hate speech, improving training for its content moderators and increasing accountability for creators of misogynist content.

Facebook has also invited Women, Action & the Media, The Everyday Sexism Project and members of our coalition to contribute to these efforts and be part of an ongoing conversation. As part of these efforts, we will work closely with Facebook on the issue of how Community Standards around hate speech are evaluated and to ensure best practices represent the interests of our coalition.

 In recent days, it has become clear that our systems to identify and remove hate speech have failed to work as effectively as we would like, particularly around issues of gender-based hate. In some cases, content is not being removed as quickly as we want. In other cases, content that should be removed has not been or has been evaluated using outdated criteria. We have been working over the past several months to improve our systems to respond to reports of violations, but the guidelines used by these systems have failed to capture all the content that violates our standards. We need to do better – and we will.

Update: Since Tuesday morning, two additional companies have disassociated from Facebook advertising, bringing the total to 15. Find the full list here.
