Good morning!

I HOPE that everyone had a wonderful day celebrating Father’s Day with their father yesterday!  I certainly did! I was so excited to spend time with my father that I completely forgot to blog it in my rush to post yesterday.

You see my father is NEVER around for Father’s Day. He travels quite a bit, and this was the first year in I don’t know how long, that he was actually going to be around so that we could celebrate his day. So, I have to admit, I was pretty much in my own little world.

HOPE that my male readers will forgive me.  So let me say it now….”Happy Belated Father’s Day to all the fathers out there!”

Speaking of travel…this one is for my friends and fans in Guam, and especially Anna, Peter, and Lea. Hafa Adai:

Travel to Guam: The South Pacific’s Secret Vacation Destination

I’m embarrassed to admit that before traveling to Guam I knew very little of the destination. My limited knowledge: Guam is a U.S. Territory, a tropical island in the Pacific and closer to Asia than North America.

But wooed by my taste buds and the lure of the island’s annual Maila Ta Fan Boka Festival, (Come, Let’s Eat) I visited, I learned and I fell in love. For the delicious details of my voyage, keep reading.

Let me set the stage: Picture Hawaii, then subtract 30 years from your vision, for Guam is lush and tropical but heralds the simplicity of an off-the-beaten-path getaway. Here life is beautifully uncomplicated – 35 miles per hours is the standard speed limit, cha-cha is the adopted dance and country is its favorite music. It’s also a land of turquoise waters, palm silhouettes, Kodak-moment views and a contagiously welcoming spirit where the local Chamorro greeting “Håfa Adai!” is warmly and widely offered.

Discovered by Magellan, its history is impressive. Guam and its sister Mariana Islands were formally claimed by the Spanish Crown in 1565 and its role in World War II’s Pacific Theater was critical. The island is proud of its multi-generational investments and no where is its pride and love more evident than in its food and fun.

Come, Let’s Eat!

Maila Ta Fan Boka Competition – Attended by foodie fans and fanatics this festival spurred my visit, and disappointed I was not. Showcasing the island’s Asian and Spanish influences, amateur and professional teams competed with three dishes: chicken, eggplant and banana. Favorite food: eggplant in coconut milk, flavored with red peppers.

Outdoor barbeque – Ever wondered how to throw a fiesta? Ask the Muñas. Entertaining is the lifeblood of the family of Guam senator, Tina Muña Barnes. Required ingredients: outdoor grill, multiple pounds of meat and hardy appetites. And the generous invitation from the Muña’s family is not unusual – this is life on Guam. Favorite food: Chamorro barbeque ribs.

Chamorro Village – Start with a Spanish setting. Add an energetic guest list. Throw in some live music, island dancers and fresh food from local vendors and this gregarious gathering is a happening, an every Wednesday night happening. Favorite food: shrimp kélaguen (made with fresh island coconut and lemon juice).

Hit the Road

The best way to see Guam is to rent a car, cruise along Marine Drive and let the island unfold before you like a Polaroid picture. Stops can be as frequent or infrequent as your desires dictate.

Latte of Freedom – As early as 500 A.D. ancient Chamorros built their houses on stone pillars known as lattes. These stones are symbolic of Guam and the 80-foot-high Latte of Freedom on a point overlooking the bay was constructed to be for the West what the Statue of Liberty is to the East: a welcome to the United States.

Asan Beach – On July 21, 1944 the Americans landed on Asan to recapture the island from occupying Japanese forces; it has since represented Guam’s role in World War II.

Lina’la’ Chamorro Cultural Park – Offering a back-in-time visit into Guam’s rich cultural background, the island’s newest sight (all phases completed January 2012) features animal encounters, ziplining and an authentic peek into long-ago island life.

Two Lovers’ Point – Legend holds that a pair of star-crossed Chamorro lovers, whose parents would not allow them to marry, jumped to their deaths from this 378-foot cliff. Today it’s an open-to-the-public lookout over the Philippine Sea.

Memo to Luxe Lovers

Being no stranger to five-star luxury, Guam is where a day at your hotel is as simple as deciding which umbrella-topped drink to order and what strength of sunscreen to apply. Situated on the island’s favorite playground, Tumon Bay, the brand names Westin, Nikko, Outrigger and Marriott are only a sampling. Westin was my temporary home, where a day at the waterfall pool competed with more active options – outrigger canoeing, windsurfing and scuba diving (with shipwrecks from WWI and WWII, experts consider Guam among the world’s best diving spots).

Guam’s aisle action includes topnotch namedropping: Gucci, Prada, Versace and more. Found at DFS Galleria, shopping this impressive collection of high-end boutiques is sweetened with the tidbit that Guam’s goods sell duty free.

Leo Palace Golf Resort (four nine-hole courses with one designed by Jack Nicklaus and two by Arnold Palmer) runs through the hills, valleys and wetlands of Manenggon Hills. And for a made-in-Guam treat, play a round at Mangilao Golf Club where the hilltop clubhouse provides a panoramic ocean view, and holes #12 and #13 demand daring tee shots stretching across the Pacific.

Spa Bali, Guam’s only authentic Balinese Spa, is found in the Holiday Resort Hotel. With “natural” as the guiding principle, my treat was the Island Paradise Massage – a hypnotic blend of Balinese and Lomi Lomi techniques.

Tips Only a Local Would Know

  • Visit McDonald’s (yes, you read that correctly) for a typical island breakfast of Portuguese sausage, rice and eggs.
  • If you’re invited to a family barbecue, seize the opportunity.
  • Enjoy an informal lunch at Jeff’s Pirate Cove, the only outdoor eatery on the Pacific (note: order the cheeseburger specialty).
  • Search for the best fests. Whether it’s the Mango Festival, Banana Festival, Burgerfest or Coconut Festival, plan your visit to include an event. They’re year-around, typically sponsored by one of the island’s 19 villages and showcase Guam’s welcoming nature.
  • Dine at Hotel Nikko’s 16th floor Toh-Lee Chinese Restaurant. The view of Tumon Bay is unparalleled.

    Final Word

    Situated approximately three hours from Manila, Tokyo and Taiwan, Guam’s proximity makes it a prime stopover when in route to Asia. It was after 14 hours of travel via newly merged Continental/United Airlines that I reached this distant change of longitude. Was it worth it? Yes. Will I return? A definite yes. At 212 square miles, what Guam lacks in size, it makes up in flavor. My only question upon departure: Who’s Michelin?

  • Readers: It is a beautiful day here in the Bay Area. And so tempting to don my bikini and head to the beach. Whether you’re here or Guam, or basking on some other beautiful beach, just remember to eat plenty of watermelon. It is rich with lycopene. Eating 2½ cups of watermelon provides a dose of lycopene sufficient to increase sun protection by 33%. So sometimes when I don’t feel like eating the watermelon, I stick a few slices in the blender, and make my fave drink – lately that’s been a watermelon sparkler – my own little concoction of freshly blended watermelon juice and a shot of my favorite sparkling juice. Sparkling Peach Izze usually does the trick for me.

    And for you Joel: I read that studies also indicate that lycopene may enhance male fertility, while another watermelon compound—the amino acid citrulline, found mostly in the rind—may function as a natural alternative to Viagra.

    First Our Water…Now Our Food

    This one’s for you Doug, and all of those people out there who loved their milk as a kid growing up, and those that continue as an adult to guzzle the gallon. And really for anyone who eats food. Period. This is one of the saddest, most difficult, illuminating videos I have ever watched.

    We are getting poisoned every day, and all of us need to do one thing.

    The Popular Food that Turns Your Gut into a Pesticide Factory

    Robyn O’Brien shares her personal story and how it inspired her to become a Real Food evangelist. Her journey started when one of her children had a dangerous allergic reaction to a “typical” breakfast.

    Dr. Mercola’s Comments:

    Five years ago Robyn O’Brien was an average American mom; busy with four kids, living on a limited budget, and not in the least interested in hearing anyone lecture her about what to feed her kids. Then one day, after being served a typical breakfast consisting of Eggo waffles, blue-colored yoghurt and scrambled eggs, her youngest child suddenly had an acute allergic reaction. That very day, Robyn threw herself into researching food allergies, and virtually overnight, Robyn became a real-food activist.

    She quickly learned that the foods sold in our grocery stores are not necessarily safe. On the contrary, many, if not most of them, now contain “foreign” ingredients that have never been tested for safety.

    That something has gone awry is obvious when you take a look at the statistics. Between 1997 and 2002 the number of peanut allergies doubled, and the number of hospitalizations related to allergic reactions to food increased by a whopping 265 percent. One out of 17 children now has some form of food allergy. And allergy rates are rising.

    When you consider that a food allergic reaction occurs when your body reacts to a food protein asa foreign invader (just like a virus or bacteria) which triggers an inflammatory response, the obvious question then becomes:

    Is There Something “Foreign” in Our Food Today that Wasn’t There Before?

    Absolutely!

    Processed foods in general can contribute to allergies for a number of different reasons. Most processed foods contain a variety of food colorings, flavors, preservatives, and other additives can have a major impact. But there’s another, even more insidious hazard lurking in American food stores…

    In the mid-1990′s, new food proteins were engineered and introduced into our food supply, yet many people are still, to this day, clueless about this. As O’Brien states, it was clearly done to maximize profitability for the food industry, yet NO human trials were ever conducted to see if these genetically engineered proteins were actually safe for animal- and human consumption.

    One of the first foods to undergo this change was milk, which incidentally is also the number one food allergen in the US.

    In 1994, the dairy industry started using a genetically engineered growth hormone, rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) on cows in order to increase milk production. However, it resulted in higher rates of disease in the treated livestock. To counteract the ill effects, dairies also had to start using more antibiotics, which we now know is one of the driving factors behind the rise in antibiotic-resistant superbugs in humans.

    While Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and 27 countries in Europe refused to use rBGH due to the fact that it had not been proven safe, the United States took the opposite stance, and basically decided that since it hadn’t been proven dangerous, it would be allowed…

    As inconceivable as it may seem, prior to rBGH being introduced into the milk – and every other conceivable dairy product – that millions of Americans consume every day, it had only been tested on 30 rats for 90 days!

    Why You Should be Concerned About rBGH in Your Milk

    Samuel Epstein, MD, a scientist at the University of Illinois School of Public Health, is one of the top experts on cancer prevention. He is frequently called upon to advise Congress about things in our environment that may cause cancer, and he has written eight books, including two books on this particular topic What’s in Your Milk?, and Got (Genetically Engineered) Milk?

    In his books, Dr. Epstein explains that rBGH milk is “qualitatively and quantitatively different from natural milk,” and is “supercharged with high levels of a natural growth factor (IGF-1), excess levels of which have been incriminated as major causes of breast, colon, and prostate cancers.”

    In addition to increased IGF-1 levels, other differences between rBGH milk and natural milk include:

    Contamination of milk by the genetically modified hormone rBGH Contamination by pus and antibiotics resulting from the high incidence of mastitis in rBGH-injected cows
    Contamination with illegal antibiotics and drugs used to treat mastitis and other rBGH-induced disease Increased concentration of the thyroid hormone enzyme thyroxin-5′-monodeiodinase
    Increased concentration of long-chain and decreased concentration of short-chain fatty acids A reduction in levels of the milk protein casein

    Armed with these facts, O’Brien began researching cancer rates, and lo and behold, the United States has the highest rates of cancer of any country on the planet. According to the statistics she compiled, one in two men, and one in three women are expected to get cancer in their lifetime.  One in eight American women has breast cancer, and only one out of every 10 breast cancer cases is attributed to genetics.

    Ninety percent are triggered by environmental factors.

    What’s Wrong with Our Soy and Corn?

    Another common ingredient in processed food is soy, which is also one of the top eight food allergens.  And again, we see the presence of something “foreign” as the vast majority of soy now grown in the US is genetically engineered to withstand massive doses of weed killer.

    Ditto for corn.

    Corn allergies are on the rise, and while some genetically modified corn is engineered to withstand Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup, other varieties are engineered to create their own internal pesticide (Bt toxin).  The biotech industry claimed there were no health risks to worry about from these altered foods. In the case of Bt corn, the concern that your gut might turn into a pesticide factory was shrugged off with lame assurances that the Bt toxin wouldn’t survive once ingested.

    However, just last month, a study revealed that Bt toxin was detected in:

    • 93 percent of maternal blood samples
    • 80 percent of fetal blood samples
    • 69 percent of non-pregnant women blood samples

    Turns out you cannot replace actual safety studies with lip service after all. Another recent review of 19 animal studies on genetically modified organisms (GMO) revealed that nearly 10 percent of blood, urine, organ and other parameters tested were significantly influenced by GMOs, with the liver and kidneys faring the worst. Additionally, Jeffrey Smith, executive director of theInstitute for Responsible Technology and author of two books on the topic, has previously documented more than 65 serious health risks from GM products of all kinds.

    Among them:

    • Offspring of rats fed GM soy showed a five-fold increase in mortality, lower birth weights, and the inability to reproduce
    • Male mice fed GM soy had damaged young sperm cells
    • The embryo offspring of GM soy-fed mice had altered DNA functioning
    • Several US farmers reported sterility or fertility problems among pigs and cows fed on GM corn varieties

    Signs of Food Sensitivities and Allergies

    Paradoxically, the foods you crave are oftentimes the foods that cause you the most trouble, so that’s a good place to start. Common food cravings are milk, ice cream, pasta or bread. Other questions that can help you determine whether or not you might have a food sensitivity or allergy are:

    • Do you experience bloating after meals, gas, frequent belching, or any kind of digestive problems?
    • Do you have chronic constipation or diarrhea?
    • Do you have a stuffy nose after meals?
    • Do you have low energy or feel drowsy after eating?
    • Do you have frequent headaches or migraines?
    • Does anyone in your family have food allergies?

    If you answer yes to any of these questions, you may want to investigate further.

    How to Determine What Foods You’re Allergic to

    If you think you’re suffering from a food allergy and notice symptoms shortly after eating a specific food, then that’s a good place to start. Keep in mind that you can also be sensitive to food additives like artificial colors, preservatives and flavor enhancers (MSG), so reading labels is required if you’re having allergy symptoms.  One of the best things you can do if you believe you are suffering from a food allergy is to do a diet elimination challenge. Simply remove all foods that contain what you believe you are allergic to and see if your symptoms improve over the next few days. You may need to go as long as five days to give it a full trial.

    If the symptoms disappear in one day, then you have your answer. The real clincher, though, is to reintroduce the food or drink (on an empty stomach). If the suspected food is the culprit you will generally be able to feel the symptoms return within an hour.

    This can be difficult if you eat a lot of processed foods, as these often contain “hidden” ingredients like corn, milk, soy, wheat, yeast and artificial additives that are often problematic. The most suspect foods will be those eaten daily or more than once a week, as well as foods that you crave or eat at night.  In extreme cases where it is difficult to isolate the offending food, you may even need to go on a fast to see if your symptoms resolve.

    Avoiding Foreign Ingredients is Beneficial for Everyone

    As discussed above, when your body encounters something that it views as a foreign invader, allergy symptoms are a natural side effect. However, there’s evidence that even if you don’t have food allergy symptoms, genetically modified foods are NOT entirely compatible with human biology, and long term, anything could happen… As mentioned earlier, infertility is a recurring side effect in animal studies. Whether or not this can occur in humans is still completely unknown.

    Therefore, avoiding GM foods should be on everyone’s list, whether you have food sensitivities or not.  As O’Brien says, we cannot wait for legislation. We must begin to act in our own self interest.

    “There is nothing more patriotic we could be doing,” O’Brien says.

    When possible, buy your fresh produce and meat from local farmers who have committed to using non-GM seeds and avoid processed non-organic foods as much as possible, as again these are virtually 100-percent guaranteed to contain GM ingredients.

    Genetically modified foods are, from my perception, one of the most significant threats that we have against the very sustainability of the human race, so everything you can do to avoid them is a step in the right direction for humankind.

    All I want to add, is that so many of the articles that I post here daily are bringers of bad news. It sometimes can weigh very heavy on me. But I know that we need to know this stuff in order to affect change.

    I am one person and this is my part in doing one thing. What is yours? Will you give up milk? Soy? Corn? Will you be the next O’Brien or Brockovich?  Remember when Oprah spoke of mad cow disease on her show in 1998, and the huge impact she had?  How far will you take it? Tell me… Blog me.

    Fluoridation Poisoning

    Readers: On Sunday, I posted a write by Dr. Mercola about “Flouride”. Heard enough? Well, I’m going to tell you more. Here’s another article that may interest you. It gives us a little…no actually a lot of background on this fluoridation poison, that if you don’t know by now you will after reading this write, is truly fucking us up.

    Fluoride is a byproduct of aluminum production. Nobody knew what to do with it – hence, it became a very expensive problem to solve. That was until they decided to claim a health benefit so great, they could justify the government buying it and putting it in the water…our water that we have been drinking and bathing in daily.

    Once again, human lives are tossed aside for the love of money. Here’s the write:

    “Fluoridation is the greatest case of scientific fraud of this century.”  – Robert Carlton, Ph.D, former EPA scientist, 1992

    The story begins in 1924, when Interessen Gemeinschaft Farben (I.G. Farben), a German chemical manufacturing company, began receiving loans from American bankers, gradually leading to the creation of the huge I.G. Farben cartel. In 1928 Henry Ford and American Standard Oil Company (The Rockefellers) merged their assets with I.G. Farben, and by the early thirties, there were more than a hundred American corporations which had subsidiaries and co-operative understandings in Germany. The I.G. Farben assets in America were controlled by a holding Company, American I.G. Farben, which listed on it’s board of directors: Edsel Ford, President of the Ford Motor Company, Chas. E. Mitchell, President of Rockerfeller’s National City Bank of New York, Walter Teagle, President of Standard Oil New York, Paul Warburg, Chairman of the federal reserve and brother of Max Warburg, financier of Germany’s War effort, Herman Metz, a director of the Bank of Manhattan, controlled by the Warburgs, and a number of other members, three of which were tried and convicted as German war criminals for their crimes against humanity. In 1939 under the Alted agreement, the American Aluminum Company (ALCOA), then the worlds largest producer of sodium fluoride, and the Dow Chemical Company transferred its technology to Germany. Colgate, Kellogg, Dupont and many other companies eventually signed cartel agreements with I.G. Farben, creating a powerful lobby group accurately dubbed “the fluoride mafia”(Stephen 1995).

    At the end of World War II, the US government sent Charles Eliot Perkins, a research worker in chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and pathology, to take charge of the vast Farben chemical plants in Germany. The German chemists told Perkins of a scheme which they had devised during the war and had been adapted by the German General Staff. The German chemists explained of their attempt to control the population in any given area through the mass medication of drinking water with sodium fluoride, a tactic used in German and Russian prisoner of war camps to make the prisoners “stupid and docile”(Stephen 1995). Farben had developed plans during the war to fluoridate the occupied countries because it was found that fluoridation caused slight damage to a specific part of the brain, making it more difficult for the person affected to defend his freedom and causing the individual to become more docile towards authority. Fluoride remains one of the strongest anti-psychotic substances known, and is contained in twenty-five percent of the major tranquilizers. It may not seem surprising that Hitler’s regime practiced the concept of mind control through chemical means, but the American military continued Nazi research, exploring techniques to incapacitate an enemy or medicate an entire nation. As stated in the Rockerfeller Report, a Presidential briefing on CIA activities, “the drug program was part of a much larger CIA program to study possible means of controlling human behavior”(Stephen 1995).

    The ‘dental caries prevention myth’ associated with fluoride, originated in the United States in 1939, when a scientist named Gerald J. Cox, employed by ALCOA, the largest producer of toxic fluoride waste and at the time being threatened by fluoride damage claims, fluoridated some lab rats, concluded that fluoride reduced cavities and claimed that it should be added to the nation’s water supplies. In 1947, Oscar R. Ewing, a long time ALCOA lawyer, was appointed head of the Federal Security Agency , a position that placed him in charge of the Public Health Service(PHS). Over the next three years, eighty-seven new American cities began fluoridating their water, including the control city in a water fluoridation study in Michigan, thus eliminating the most scientifically objective test of safety and benefit before it was ever completed.

    American ‘education and research’ was funded by the Aluminum Manufacturing, Fertilizer and Weapons Industry looking for an outlet for the increasingly mounting fluoride industrial waste while attaining positive profit increase. The ‘discovery’ that fluoride benefited teeth, was paid for by industry that needed to be able to defend “lawsuits from workers and communities poisoned by industrial fluoride emissions” (Bryson 1995) and turn a liability into an asset. Fluoride, a waste constituent in the manufacturing processes of explosives, fertilizers and other ‘necessities’, was expensive to dispose of properly and until a ‘use’ was found for it in America’s water supplies, the substance was only considered a toxic, hazardous waste. Through sly public re-education, fluoride, once a waste product, became the active ingredient in fluorinated pesticides, fungicides, rodenticides, anesthetics, tranquilizers, fluorinated pharmaceuticals, and a number of industrial and domestic products, fluorinated dental gels, rinses and toothpastes. Fluoride is so much a part of a multibillion-dollar industrial and pharmaceutical income, that any withdrawal of support from pro-fluoridationists is financially impossible, legally unthinkable and potentially devastating for their career and reputation.

    Funded by US industrialists, in an attempt to encourage public acceptance of fluoride, Edward Bernays, known also as the father of PR, or the original spin doctor, began a campaign of deception to persuade public opinion. Barnays explained “you can get practically any idea accepted if doctors are in favour. The public is willing to accept it because a doctor is an authority to most people, regardless of how much he knows or doesn’t know”(Bryson 2004). Doctors who endorsed fluoridation didn’t know that research discrediting fluoride’s safety was either suppressed or not conducted in the first place. Fluoride became equated with scientific progress and since it was introduced to the public as a health-enhancing substance, added to the environment for the children’s sake, those opposing fluoride were dismissed as cranks, quacks and lunatics. Fluoride became impervious to criticism because of a relentless PR offensive, but also because of it’s overall toxicity. Unlike chemicals that have a signature effect, fluoride, a systemic poison, produces a range of health problems, so it’s effects are more difficult to diagnose.

    Recently declassified US Military documents such as Manhattan Project, shows how Fluoride is the key chemical in atomic bomb production and millions of tonnes of it were needed for the manufacture of bomb-grade uranium and plutonium. Fluoride poisoning, not radiation poisoning, emerged as the leading chemical health hazard for both workers and nearby communities. A-bomb scientists were ordered to provide evidence useful for defense in litigation, so they began secretly testing fluoride on unsuspecting hospital patients and indignant, mentally retarded children.. “The August 1948 Journal of the American Dental Association shows that evidence of adverse effects from fluoride was censored by the US Atomic Energy Commission for reasons of “national security” (Griffiths 1998). The only report released stated that fluoride was safe for humans in small doses.

    During the Cold War, Dr. Harold C. Hodge, who had been the toxicologist for the US Army Manhattan Project, was the leading scientific promoter of water fluoridation. While Dr. Hodge was reassuring congress of the safety of water fluoridation, he was covertly conducting one of the nation’s first public water fluoridation experiments in Newburgh, New York, secretly studying biological samples from Newburgh citizens at his US laboratory at the University of Rochester. Since there are no legal constraints against the suppression of scientific data, the only published conclusion resulting from these experiments was that fluoride was safe in low doses, a profoundly helpful verdict for the US Military who feared lawsuits for fluoride injury from workers in nuclear power plants and munitions factories. Fluoride pollution was one of the biggest legal worries facing key US industrial sectors during the cold war. A secret group of corporate attorneys, known as the Fluorine Lawyers Committee, whose members included US Steel, ALCOA, Kaiser Aluminum, and Reynolds Metals, commissioned research at the Kettering Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati to “provide ammunition”(Bryson 2004) for those corporations who were fighting a wave of citizen claims for fluoride injury. The Fluorine Lawyers Committee and their medical ambassadors were in personal and frequent contact with the senior officials of the federal National Institute for Dental Research, and have been implied in the ‘burying’ of the forty year old Kettering study, which showed that fluoride poisoned the lungs and lymph nodes in laboratory animals. Private interests, sought to destroy careers and censor information by ensuring that scientific studies raising doubts about the safety of fluoride never got funded, and if they did, never got published.

    During the 1990’s, research conducted by Harvard toxicologist Phillis Mullenix showed that fluoride in water may lead to lower IQ’s, and produced symptoms in rats strongly resembling attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Just days before her research was accepted for publication, Mullenix was fired as the head of toxicology at the Forsyth Dental Center in Boston. Then her application for a grant to continue her fluoride and central nervous system research was turned down by the US National Institute of Health (NIH), when an NIH panel told her that “fluoride does not have central nervous system effects”(Griffiths 1998).

    Despite growing evidence that it is harmful to public health, US federal and state public health agencies and large dental and medical organizations such as the American Dental Association (ADA), continue to promote fluoride. Water fluoridation continues, despite the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s own scientists, whose union, Chapter 280 of the National Treasury Employees Union, has taken a strong stand against it. Dr. William Hirzy, vice president of Chapter 280, stated that “fluoride (that is added to municipal water) is a hazardous waste product for which there is substantial evidence of adverse health effects and, contrary to public perception, virtually no evidence of significant benefits”( Mullenix 1998). Although fluoride is up to fifty times more toxic than sulfur dioxide, it is still not regulated as an air pollutant by the American Clean Air Act. Since thousands of tonnes of industrial fluoride waste is poured into drinking water supplies all over North America, supposedly to encourage gleaming smiles in our children, big industry in the US has the benefit of emitting as much fluoride waste into the environment as they like with absolutely no requirement to measure emissions and no way of being held accountable for poisoning people, animals and vegetation.

    In August 2003, the EPA requested that the National Research Council, the research arm of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), re-evaluate water fluoride safety standards by reviewing recent scientific literature, because the last review in 1993 had major gaps in research. “Neither the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), nor the National Institute for Dental Research (NIDR), nor the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has any proof on fluoride’s safety or effectiveness”(Sterling 1993). The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology has classified fluoride as an unapproved dental medicament due to it’s high toxicity and the US National Cancer Institute Toxicological Program has found fluoride to be an “equivocal carcinogen” (Maurer 1990).

    Currently the US government is continuing to introduce further fluoridation schemes throughout the country, including the Water Act passed in November 2003, which has made it impossible for water companies to undergo civil or criminal hearings as a result of adding fluoride to public water supplies.

    In a society where products containing asbestos, lead, beryllium and many other carcinogens have been recalled from the marketplace, it is surprising that fluoride is embraced so thoroughly and blindly. It seems absurd that we would consider paying the chemical industry to dispose of their toxic waste by adding it to our water supply. Hiding the hazards of fluoride pollution from the public is a capitalist-style con job of epic proportions that has occurred because a powerful lobby wishes to manipulate public opinion in order to protect it’s own financial interests. “Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country… our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of” (Bernays 1991).

    PS: A side not about Dr. Mercola that I want to make very clear. Although I think he is pretty remarkable in his research and reporting, I do not support his products. His products are very expensive compared to many other comparable products out there.  A high percentage of what you are paying for in product goes to advertising….to the hype of the product. And Dr. Mercola is all about getting the word out on his products.

    So as much as I like what he has to say, he is way too expensive. So I suggest you read his writes, learn from them, but do your own research and if you feel like the product is for you, buy it from other companies who produce similar products. (See my medical disclaimer in the right hand column of my blog for more details.)

    By Dr. Mercola charging astronomical prices it drives other companies to charge more for what we all know we could get for less. As we all know…the medial industry is not immune to greed.

    I have blogged about the atrocities that happen to arab women, and really the plight of women in general across the world. Some feel uncomfortable to hear about it…to read about what I and others write. But the uncomfortableness that people feel is nothing compared to how these women feel…to how these women live on a daily basis. Ask Bagram, or Farah, or Herat, or Jalabad, or Bahran Chah or the many other women who have shared their stories.

    Whenever I feel overwhelmed by it all, I think of the women that have to live by it all. They are the ones that live on the front line of barbarism.

    The plight of women is not something that can be heard once or even a few times. It has to be talked about…stories have to be told…it has to be in our face every day because women live with it every day. We need to open our hearts and keep it in our minds, or change has no chance. I too pray for your success.

    I know this article is a long one and some of you might not read…but for those that do, it’s a goody. Once again an article by Dr. Mercola.

    The “Healthful” Drink that Can Damage Your Health

    According to the U.S. Surgeon General, “there are profound and consequential disparities in the oral health of our citizens…” that have resulted in a “silent epidemic” of dental and oral diseases that disproportionately affects low-income and minority populations.

    Unfortunately, not only are these groups afflicted with worse dental health, but are also suffering more extensively from the public health measure carried out under the guise of improving oral health: water fluoridation.

    The Environmental Injustice of Water Fluoridation

    One of the goals of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and particularly of its administrator Lisa Jackson, is achieving Environmental Justice for all Americans. According to the EPA (2011):

    “Environmental Justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. EPA has this goal for all communities and persons across this Nation.

    It will be achieved when everyone enjoys the same degree of protection from environmental and health hazards and equal access to the decision-making process to have a healthy environment in which to live, learn, and work.”

    Unfortunately, the agencies and associations that continue to promote artificial water fluoridation – including the EPA’s Office of Water, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Oral Health Division, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the American Dental Association (ADA) – have completely ignored racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic differences when stating that the level of fluoride used is “safe” for all Americans to consume in drinking water – on a daily basis, and over a lifetime.

    A number of groups are particularly susceptible to fluoride’s toxic effects.

    Fluoridation proponents are finally beginning to acknowledge the susceptibility of infants and children to excessive fluoride intakes, likely because they can no longer deny the obvious effects that fluoride has on the developing teeth, in the form of dental fluorosis.

    Nearly 41 percent of adolescents aged 12-15 now have some form of dental fluorosis, an outwardly visible sign of fluoride over-exposure and toxicity.

    However, also included among those that are disproportionately impacted by fluoride are minorities and low-income families. The refusal by government agencies to consider these groups when determining enforceable safety standards or recommended levels for artificial fluoridation is no doubt a form of discrimination, contradicting any assertions by these agencies that they are working towards Environmental Justice for all.

    Atlanta Civil Rights leaders Andrew Young and Reverend Dr. Gerald Durley recently requested that Georgia legislators repeal the state’s mandatory water fluoridation law, based on the fact that fluoride can disproportionately harm poor citizens and black families.

    According to a recent press release , the leaders “expressed concerns about the fairness, safety, and full disclosure regarding fluoridation in letters to the state’s minority and majority legislative leaders.” In his letter to the legislators, Rev. Dr. Durley states,

    “I support the holding of Fluoridegate hearings at the state and national level so we can learn why we haven’t been openly told that fluorides build up in the body over time, (and) why our government agencies haven’t told the black community openly that fluorides disproportionately harm black Americans…”

    Minorities Suffer Disproportionate Harm from Fluoridation

    African American children have been found to consume significantly more total fluids and plain water, and thus receive more fluoride from drinking water, than white children . Additionally, African American mothers are less likely to breastfeed than most other racial groups . As breast milk contains very low levels of fluoride ), babies fed formula made with fluoridated water could receive up to 200 times more fluoride than a breast-fed baby.

    Thus, African American infants and children have a higher risk of being overexposed to fluoride.

    In fact, it has been known for many decades that African Americans and Hispanics are at an increased risk of developing dental fluorosis, and have a higher risk of suffering from the more severe forms of this condition.

    Data published in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report in 2005 show that Black and Mexican Americans have significantly higher levels of the worst forms of dental fluorosis than do Whites, as indicated in the following table from Beltrán-Aguilar et al. (2005; Table 23).

    Factors that Influence Fluoride’s Toxicity

    Fluoride’s toxicity is exacerbated by:

    • Inadequate nutrition, including lower intakes of iodine and calciumCertain racial groups are more likely to be lactose intolerant than others. Included among these are:
      • Central and East Asians (80-100 percent lactose intolerant; de Vrese, 2001)
      • Native Americans (80-100 percent lactose intolerant; National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, 2006)
      • African Americans (75 percent lactose intolerant; de Vrese, 2001), and
      • Southern Indians (70 percent lactose intolerant; de Vrese, 2001)The elevated incidence of lactose intolerance may indicate lower rates of milk consumption, and higher consumption rates of water or other beverages, than whites (21 percent lactose intolerant; Scrimshaw and Murray, 1988).Thus these groups may be more heavily exposed to fluoride in water and other beverages than are Caucasian Americans, and their calcium intakes may be compromised.
    • Kidney dysfunction and diabetes, which are more prevalent among minorities than whites.Hispanics are nearly twice as likely , and African Americans nearly four times more likely , to develop kidney failure than are Caucasians.Both African Americans and Hispanics are nearly twice as likely to suffer from diabetes than are whites.
    • Inadequate supplies of vitamin C, vitamin D, magnesium, and selenium may also exacerbate fluoride’s detrimental effects.

    Inadequate Nutrition Heightens Fluoride’s Health Risks

    Poor nutrition has been found to increase the incidence and severity of:

    • Dental fluorosis and
    • Skeletal fluorosis.

    The dose of fluoride associated with disturbed endocrine function is also substantially lower if you’re deficient in iodine (NRC, 2006). Even modest levels of fluoride in drinking water (0.88 mg/L) have been associated with reduced IQ and increased frequency of hypothyroidism when combined with low iodine, even more so than with iodine deficiency alone (Lin et al., 1991).

    As poor nutrition frequently occurs among low-income families, poor children and adults are therefore far more susceptible to the detrimental effects of fluoride exposure.

    Low-income families typically consume substantially less fresh fruits and vegetables, and thus more processed foods, than higher income groups. In addition to generally being less nutritious, processed foods – including those containing mechanically de-boned chicken – can also contain relatively high levels of fluoride.

    Moreover, the increasing dietary intake of harmful trans fats in the United States, especially among lower income groups, may have negative repercussions in terms of fluoride metabolism. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:

    “Diets high in fat have been reported to increase deposition of fluoride in bone and, thus, to enhance toxicity” (HHS, 1991).

    Additionally, as with African Americans, low-income children have been found to consume significantly more total fluids and plain water – and thus receive more fluoride from drinking water – than higher-income children, putting them at greater risk for fluoride’s toxic effects.

    Also of concern is the inability of low-income families living in fluoridated communities to provide low-fluoride or fluoride-free water to reconstitute infant formula. Low-income families are likely not able to afford expensive filtration systems to remove fluoride from tap water, nor are they likely able to afford bottled water containing low or no fluoride.

    Thus, bottle-fed infants of low-income families are at an increased risk for suffering from over-exposure to fluoride during this very sensitive developmental period.

    Income Level is Strongest Indicator of Tooth Decay, Regardless of Water Fluoridation

    According to the American Dental Association (ADA, 2009),

    “[L]ow income is the single best predictor of high caries [cavity] experience in children. Analysis of data shows that the amount of tooth decay in children is inversely related to income level.”

    In 1988, an editorial published in the Journal of Dental Research (Newbrun, 1988) reported that “About 20 to 25 percent of children are at relatively high risk of caries, despite the declining caries prevalence in the ‘fluoride generation’.” The high-risk children included the poor.

    In 1995, it was found that more than 50 percent of U.S. schoolchildren had experienced cavities (Edelstein and Douglass, 1995), when preschoolers and cavities in the primary teeth were considered. According to the authors,

    “Minority, low-income and underserved groups continue to experience extensive destruction in both primary and permanent teeth.”

    Actually, 42 percent of five-year-olds and almost 60 percent of nine-year-olds had cavities in their primary and permanent teeth, according to National Institutes of Dental Research 1986-1987 data.

    The most recent oral health statistics (1999-2004) show a direct link with tooth decay and poverty level. For example, the incidence of caries is much higher in children from families with lower income levels (HIW, Undated a-c):

    In 2008, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported that the extent of dental disease in children has not decreased, and estimated that 6.5 million children two through 18 years of age on Medicaid suffer with untreated tooth decay (GAO, 2008). In November 2010, the GAO reported “high rates of dental disease and low utilization of dental services by children in low-income families, and the challenge of finding dentists to treat them are long-standing concerns” (GAO, 2010).

    A study recently published in the Journal of Dental Research (also found a significant relationship between tooth loss and state income inequality among adults in the United States, with the risk for tooth loss being about 20 percent greater for those living in economically “disadvantaged” areas.

    Despite claims to the contrary by promoters of fluoridation, low-income children still have high rates of tooth decay even when their drinking water is artificially fluoridated.

    For example, in Georgia where fluoridation is state-mandated, 44 percent of 2 to 5-year-old Head Start children have tooth decay . And although fluoridation is required in North Dakota, tooth decay is present in 82 percent of Native American third grade children (who are often from very low-income families) compared to 54 percent of white children .

    In New York City – which is 100 percent fluoridated – 56 percent of low-socioeconomic third grade children have tooth decay, compared to 38 percent of high-socioeconomic third grade children. Likewise, in Kentucky, with a nearly 100 percent t fluoridation rate, nearly 60 percent of third grade children have experienced tooth decay, yet for nearly 35 percent of these children that decay went untreated.

    More than 60 Oral Health Care Reports from the 50 States reaffirm that low-income people have the worst dental health.

    More importantly, these reports present quite an extensive array of data from examinations of school age children, yet all but one of these fail to mention rates of dental fluorosis. This is despite that each and every report strongly advocates water fluoridation.

    State Dental Policies Receive Failing Grades

    State dental policies fail one in five children, according to the Pew Charitable Trust. Even some highly fluoridated states received a grade of “F” from Pew.

    Included among these is West Virginia, which is 92 percent fluoridated. West Virginia’s tooth decay rate is 66 percent for 15 year-olds. By the time these children graduate from high school, the proportion has increased to 84 percent .

    It is reported that 80 percent of dental caries in children of West Virginia is concentrated in just 25 percent of the child population. West Virginia also ranks first in the U.S. for partial and complete tooth loss among adults.

    The most recent national statistics show that the prevalence of dental caries in primary teeth significantly has increased for 2-5 year-olds, from approximately 24 percent to 28 percent between the 1988-1994 and 1999-2004 recording periods, and has increased from 40 percent to 42 percent for all children 2-11 years old.

    Meanwhile, fluoridation rates in the United States have continued to increase, from 62 percent in 1992 (CDC, 2008) to over 72 percent in 2008!

    Proponents of fluoridation would have us believe that as fluoridation rates go up, tooth decay rates will go down. But that hasn’t happened.

    Instead, oral health continues to decline among children – especially those from lower income families – and symptoms of fluoride overexposure and toxicity have increased to epidemic proportions, as evidenced by the 41 percent of adolescents aged 12-15 now afflicted with dental fluorosis (Beltrán-Aguilar et al., 2010).

    The Role of the EPA in Fluoridation

    EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has declared that achieving Environmental Justice for all Americans is a top priority for her agency.

    As fluoride has been shown to disproportionately affect poor and minority Americans, the EPA should be giving special consideration to these groups when determining the level of fluoride in drinking water that is safe for all Americans. Unfortunately, the most recent analyses of fluoride by the EPA’s Office of Water (EPA, 2010a, 2010b) clearly indicate that the EPA is more concerned with protecting the fluoridation program than protecting the American people.

    For example, the EPA’s newly proposed reference dose for fluoride (the dose of fluoride that is supposedly safe for everyone when taken every day and over a lifetime) was based on the dietary intake of fluoride recommended by the Institute of Medicine nearly 15 years ago (IOM, 1997) to prevent dental caries.

    Since that time, however, it has been well established – and is now widely accepted – that the primary action of fluoride on teeth is topical, not systemic.

    As fluoride is not an essential element (i.e. not necessary for human health), any dietary recommendations for fluoride are therefore illogical and unnecessary.

    Thus, EPA’s newly proposed reference dose was not based on the latest scientific findings concerning the safety of this level of fluoride, but rather on outdated recommendations by those promoting artificial water fluoridation.

    This reference dose will soon be translated to a new Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG) for fluoride in drinking water. If EPA were to evaluate the true science behind fluoride toxicity – free from any interference by those promoting fluoridation – the only rational outcome would be an MCLG of ZERO, effectively ending the practice of artificial water fluoridation.

    The Fluoride Action Network has a game plan to END water fluoridation in both Canada and the United States. Our fluoride initiative will primarily focus on Canada since 60 percent of Canada is already non-fluoridated. If we can get Calgary and the rest of Canada to stop fluoridating their water, we believe the U.S. will be forced to follow.

    Wonderful Women Of The World

    A few years ago during a visit to her pediatrician Michelle Obama was informed that she and Barack needed to start paying better attention to what they were feeding their girls.

    “They were younger at the time. They were active and growing, with a healthy sense of themselves, which Barack and I have always encouraged. But our doctor told me that their BMIs were creeping upwards. Now to be honest, I didn’t really know what BMI was. And I certainly didn’t know that even a small increase in BMI can have serious consequences for a child’s health. So I’m grateful my pediatrician was there to help.”

    “He explained that BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a way of gauging whether or not your child is within a healthy weight range for his or her height, age and growth pattern. A percentage too low may indicate hunger and poor nutrition, and a percentage too high can lead to diabetes, heart disease and other health issues. I was fortunate that our pediatrician was paying attention to the trends of childhood obesity, because I never would have known to ask for a screening on my own.”

    When Michelle Obama became First Lady she declared her intent in 2010 was to lead the administration’s efforts to tackle the epidemic of childhood obesity. Through advocacy and outreach to businesses, nonprofit organizations and government officials, Michelle Obama personally hoped to nurture a generation of healthier children. Well…I have to say she is well on her way.

    Last year, president Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, which required new insurance plans to cover preventive services like BMI screenings without any kind of deductible, co-pay or co-insurance. So today, most of you can get your child’s BMI screened without paying a penny out of pocket.

    Just this past Thursday, our First Lady, Michelle Obama announced a new initiative to empower and encouarge day care providers to do their part in ending childhood obesity.

    I am surprised at myself that I have not honored our First Lady as a wonderful woman of the world yet. So…without further ado, today is the day. Kudos to Michelle Obama for all  that she has done and for what I know she will accomplish as a wonderful woman of the world and First Lady.

    Michelle Obama announces Let’s Move! Child Care tools for daycare centers

    WASHINGTON, June 10, 2011 — Yesterday, First Lady Michelle Obama announced a new initiative to empower and encouarge day care providers to do their part in ending childhood obesity: Let’s Move! Child Care.

    In a post yesterday on the Let’s Move website, Executive Director, Robin Schepper provided a checklist on healthy nutrition, physical activity and screen time for both providers and parents.  The five items include:

    • Physical Activity: Provide 1-2 hours of physical activity throughout the day, including outside play when possible.
    • Screen Time: No screen time for children under two years.  For children age two and older, strive to limit screen time to no more than 30 minutes per week during child care, and work with parents and caregivers to ensure children have no more than 1-2 hours of quality screen time per day, the amount recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
    • Food: Serve fruits or vegetables at every meal, eat meals family-style when possible, and no fried foods.
    • Beverages: Provide access to water during meals and throughout the day, and do not serve sugary drinks.  For children age two and older, serve low-fat (1%) or non-fat milk, and no more than one 4-6 ounce serving of 100% juice per day.
    • Infant feeding: For mothers who want to continue breastfeeding, provide their milk to their infants and welcome them to breastfeed during the child care day; and support all new parents in their decisions about infant feeding.

    Michelle Obama unveiled the Let’s Move! Child Care while visiting children at CentroNia, a bilingual child care center in Washington, DC.

    “Everyone is going to see that these small changes can make a big difference.  If our kids get into the habit of getting up and playing, if their palates warm up to veggies at an early age, and if they’re not glued to a TV screen all day, they’re on their way to healthy habits for life,” First Lady Mrs. Obama said. “That’s why I’m so excited about Let’s Move Child Care – because I know that childcare facilities and home-based providers can be a real building block for an entire generation of healthy kids.”
