Keith Olbermann, Special Comment On Health Care: Part 2

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 18th October 2009

I was especially moved by this segment, as Keith makes it personal in speaking about his own father’s unstable health, and the dreadful situations that other families experience. He goes on to say that our mortality rate is increasing…yes increasing! Our mortality rate is rising because people are dying. Not because they have an incurable disease, but because of one simple thing: lack of money. We are letting people die because they can not afford health insurance.

Yeah, life is about survival of the fittest, but without access to insurance for all of us, the playing field isn’t level. The ones surviving…the ones that are truly the fittest, are the ones that can afford health care. The ones that can’t, are dying. The mortality rate of Americans under the age of 65 that are uninsured is 40% higher than those with insurance. Let me repeat: The mortality rate of Americans under the age of 65 that are uninsured is 40% higher than those with insurance.  That statistic is crazy. Once again, let me repeat: We are letting people die because they can not afford health insurance.

And we call America The Land of Opportunity.  Yeah but what opportunity? The opportunity for Big Pharma to rip people off with ridiculously high-priced medications? The opportunity for Big Pharma to feed fear by playing on our emotions, by selling us drugs with more side effects than the symptoms were trying to get rid of, not to mention trying to sell us more drugs to combat those side effects? The opportunity for Big Pharma to pay their peeps huge salaries and bonuses while people are foreclosing on their American Dream in order to save a life, their own?

Here’s Part 2:

If you watched the video that I posted, I bet you are as stunned as I am.

The Holidays are coming up. The remake of A Christmas Carol staring one of my fave actors Jim Carrey will be in the theaters. With health care in the state it is in…with health care in the direction that it is going, unless the necessary changes happen, I think this movie will have a different, more profound meaning for many.

Let’s not let this happen to us. What can we do today to make sure that it doesn’t?  I will end this post with this:  ”Some people make things happen. Others watch things happen. The rest wonder what happened.”  If we don’t do something about our current health care system, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Cecil: How did you like this one? I hope that you e-mailed to all of your friends too.

Adam: How goes it? I guess it was meant to be that you accidently made this discovery. A live version of ‘Invasion Of  The Body Snatchers’ is not my idea of fun. I think we have enough going on in this world to focus on. Again, I am grateful for your accident, and Obama taking charge of the situation. I am sure there are others involved too and my gratitude extends to them also.

Readers: In case you too are curious about what’s happening on the islands, here’s what I found from Saipan News:

Navy to conduct live-fire exercises on Farallon de Medinilla

SANTA RITA, Guam-The U.S. Navy will conduct live-fire training exercises on the island of Farallon de Medinilla from 7am to 1am on Oct. 13-14, 16 and 18.

The general location of this activity will be on the island of Farallon de Medinilla Training Area on a 10-nautical mile radius on all quadrants. The general public especially fisherman, commercial pilots and marine tour operators are advised to stay clear from this area during the time and date indicated.

Farallon de Medinilla plays a special and unique role in national defense because its location provides access frequency that supports established training requirements. In addition, the air and sea space in the Farallon provides sufficient room for the many different attack profiles necessary to replicate training opportunities in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Anna, Peter: Anything to add here?

Stay healthy and Peace out…

Keith Olbermann, Special Comment on Health Care: Part 1

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 17th October 2009

Good morning.

Liwanag: I agree with Arianna Huffington, “Why continue the wall-to-wall coverage of a story that had turned into a non-story — on a political show — during a week when health care, financial reform, and Afghanistan are all at the tipping point?”

So…that being said, let’s talk about health care again. I mean besides, taking care of our environment, because ok peeps, if our environment goes way south it doesn’t matter how healthy we are, we won’t be able to survive….but I am digressing….besides taking care of our environment, what is more important than our health? Hello…nothing. You can have everything, but if you don’t have your health, you basically have nothing. I know it sounds trite, but hey it’s true.

Last night Keith Olbermann’s Special Comment was indeed just that: Special. And I will even say, “Very Special’. If you didn’t watch the hour long special comment strictly on health care, I’m going to break it down for you and post my favorite parts throughout the week.  Maybe I’ll even post them all; he was so spot on. Olbermann got real clear and talkes about what really matters: Our time here…our life, and the inevitable ending: Death and the fear of it.

Here is Part 1:

Readers: We are at a crucial time with health care. It is imperative that we all do our best to learn, understand, and articulate to our friends and family, and strangers if necessary, why changes in our health care system is vital to our health and lives.

Hi Adam: So nice to hear from you again even if only to warn us of a potential threat. I am grateful that you were able to use your time travel skills to help us in our present time with the invaders. And that Obama is taking action to protect the world. Thank you.  How are you otherwise?

Ruth: My pleasure. I can tell you that I have been taking supplements from Dr. David Williams for at least 15 years. I have nothing but good things to say about his products. Although I have never tried TonaLean-3, I am familiar with it. Good luck with your diet program!

Zen Lill: I saved the best for last…Happy Belated Birthday! I hope that you are feeling much better now (Doug had it big time too), and enjoying your birthday weekend!  Have fun! – Happy to see you back here doing your thing with the girls :)

Peace & Love: “Live it, Give it!”

Betel Nut: A Fave Pastime In Guam, Big Business Creating Environmental Degradation In Taiwan

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 15th October 2009

Good morning.

I thought I was done with my stint on sustainability…but when you think about it, our goal towards sustainability should always be in the forefront of our minds….world wide.

Here’s one for you, Anna & Peter and the rest of you Chamorros. This article starts us in Guam, meanders our way through the sexy streets and profitable plantations of Taiwan, leading us to the end result: Ecological disaster, and death among the people.

Nation’s Biggest Cash Crop May Get Taxed For Disaster-Prone Planting Methods

By Jeff Marchesseault – Guam News

GUAM – Chewing a certain mildly narcotic palm nut is an time-honored pastime in Guam and a way of life for many islands across the Pacific. And it has become such a lucrative cultural phenomenon in Taiwan, at least two feature films have been made on the subject over the last ten years.

But, all pop artistry, lore and tradition aside, the never-ending party may soon face the sobering dictums of social accountability in the Republic of China. Taiwan’s hot, sexy betel nut industry is now under scrutiny for causing environmental degradation. And reformers want to exact their toll.

Unlike betel nut sales on Guam — where the population is smaller, chewers are fewer, and competition is less intense — in Taiwan the betel nut trade is big business. So big that the $620 million industry flourishes under a government that allows illegal growing on public lands. It also apparently does little to regulate a traditional marketing gimmick in which attractive, scantily clad young female clerks package the product behind neon-lit glass kiosks along city streets while hawking the little green nuts to motorists and wearing nothing more than see-through lingerie.

But if Taiwan’s progressives have anything to say about it, the bountiful harvest could soon get a big bite in the booty. According to an article appearing in The China Post recently, Minister of Agriculture Chen Wu-hsiung says that if a proposed health tax on betel nuts is levied, part of the revenue “should be put toward a sustainable land development fund.”

The Post story points out that such a policy initiative would support draft legislation aimed at land conservation and ecological protection. Outspoken critic and ruling Kuomintang Legislator Ting Shou-chung charges that land leased by the Council of Agriculture (COA) for forestation has long been used to cultivate betel nuts and that the COA should contribute part of any betel nut tax revenue to the sustainable land development fund, as a means of ‘righting that wrong’.

Ting says that betel nut groves engulf more than 50,000 hectares of land throughout Taiwan, making it the nation’s biggest cash crop. He also says that while the plantations may be profitable for a chosen few, their black market agribusiness makes the properties mudslide-prone because betel nut palms have a very shallow root system.

This accusation is made all the more poignant as a result of recent flooding, mudslides, death and disaster in the nation.

Finally, the lawmaker asserts that it’s high time for growers to start paying their fair share of the government’s revenue-draining health care bill. Five thousand new oral cancers and 2,300 oral cancer deaths are reported in Taiwan every year. And The China Post reports the considerable losses come “primarily as a result of betel nut chewing.”

Read The China Post story, “Betel nut revenue should contribute to land fund: COA”, October 12, 2009.

Do I have any readers from Taiwan? I would love to hear your opinion of the above article.

Belinda: How awesome – thanks for spreading the word! I love it when this works. I don’t know if you are familiar with the Trader Joe stores, but I noticed an ad on my blog informing us of the red-listed fish that they sell.  Bummer. I love Trader Joes but I was so disappointed that they sold red-listed fish. I did my part and sent them a singing fish voicemail telling them I support sustainability. I hope you and your family and friends do the same. Thank you!

SB, Ak, Doug: Some interesting conversations getting started about Afghanistan. I did some net perusing this morning around the subject myself. It has been an area that I haven’t given much time to lately. I hope that the topic continues.

Peacin’ out once again…..

Sustainable Seafood Guide

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 14th October 2009

Since I have been on the sustainability wave, I thought I would blog about it one more time. This one is dedicated to my dear readers on the west coast. Why? Simply because the information I have to share pertains to the west coast. :) However, to the rest of my domestic readers, don’t fret, there’s a guide for your area too. Click here. And to my international readers: I’m sure if you googled, you would find some information for your country.

Thanks to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and CAS, I give you the West Coast Sustainable Seafood Guide: Why it matters what seafood you chose to eat and how it can make a difference.  Interested? read  further. Not? Too bad I’m writing about it anyway. :)

Why do your seafood choices matter? (I think that’s a pretty good question.)

Worldwide, the demand for seafood is increasing. Yet, many populations of the large fish we enjoy eating are overfished and, in the U.S., we import 80% of our seafood to meet the demand. Destructive fishing and fish farming practices only add to the problem.

By purchasing fish caught or farmed using environmentally friendly practices, you’re supporting healthy, abundant oceans.

You can make a difference (Oh good, I was hoping you were going to let us know how.)

Support ocean-friendly seafood in three easy steps:

  1. Purchase seafood from the green list or, if unavailable, the yellow list. Or look for the Marine Stewardship Council blue eco-label in stores and restaurants.
  2. When you buy seafood, ask where your seafood comes from and whether it was farmed or wild-caught.
  3. Tell your friends about Seafood Watch. The more people that ask for ocean-friendly seafood, the better!

BEST CHOICES: Are abundant, well-managed, and caught or farmed in environmentally friendly ways.

  • Abalone (US farmed)
  • Arctic Char (farmed)
  • Barramundi (US farmed)

Call Back: Good. Connecting: Not So Good.

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 13th October 2009

Good morning.

I haven’t spoken about health care in quite a few days but it is still heavily on my mind. Yesterday I received an e-mail (see below) and I decided to take action and make my voice heard at least one more time, since time is getting crucial….and we all need to speak up, once again…and again…and again…

Dear Michelle:

Congress will vote on single-payer, Medicare-for-All soon! They need to hear from single-payer supporters from all over the country.

While media coverage of the health reform debate is focused on the Senate Finance Committee’s bill (which was largely drafted by current and former executives at Wellpoint, the nation’s largest private health insurance company), several congressional votes on single-payer, Medicare-for-All loom on the horizon.

You can help determine the outcome of these votes by calling Congress now.

Ask them to support the Weiner, Kucinich, and Sanders amendments.

Sometime in the next two or three weeks, Rep. Anthony Weiner’s (D-NY) amendment to substitute single-payer legislation (along the lines of Rep. Conyers’ H.R. 676) for the House leadership’s bill, H.R. 3200, will come up for an up-or-down vote on the House floor.

Additionally, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) has secured a provision in H.R. 3200 that would allow individual states to adopt their own single-payer systems.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) will introduce two single-payer amendments to the Senate bill, one to create a national single-payer plan, and the other to allows individual states to adopt single-payer.

Contact Congress today and ask them to vote “yes” on the Weiner, Kucinich, and Sanders amendments for single-payer.

Thanks for all that you do,

Healthcare-NOW! National Staff

P.S. For more on the Kucinich and Weiner amendments, go here.

Ok…so I was intrigued when they mentioned that it was easy, they know your Reps and the call is free, etc etc. Okay. Why not.  So you click Go here to call for free and they ask you to put in your name, e-mail, etc, and a phone number where they can call you back. My first question was “When” and “Do I have to wait all day for a phone call?” I gave it a shot.  Within seconds after filling out the info, and clicking on ‘place call’ my phone rang. Cool. I picked up.  I was thanked for supporting Healthcare Now and then I was connected. Hmmm…So far I like this system.

Then the glitch happened.

At Barbara Boxer’s office, I was greeted by Boxer herself  - Well not her, but her voice. I was instructed to leave a message about my concerns or something to that matter. And then…Oops – the mailbox was full. Bummer. I couldn’t give my canned reply of supporting the single-payer option.

Next.

I clicked to get a call back from Sen. Feinstein. Just like the first time, within seconds, I was getting a call back. Again, I was thanked for the call and connected to Sen. Feinstein’s office. And again I was greeted by an answering machine. Only this time I could not only not leave a message, as I was told to call back during regular office hours, which were given,  (Ugh…I was calling during those times) and that if I needed immediate service to call the offices throughout California. Oh okay. Ooopps – sorry no phone number to any of these offices were given. The call ended. Strike two.

Next.

My final call back, was to Rep. Nancy Pelosi. Same as above issue with Barbara Boxer.  Strike three.

Frustrating yes? You bet. Here I am taking the time to contact my peeps and I can’t even leave a message voicing my desires for health care.

And….just to see if things changed, I did make all three calls again later in the evening last night. No change.

Healthcare Now: If you are reading, I like your plan, but it failed in the most important part…your weakest link broke….the constituants are not able to speak their minds, and support that which you are asking us to support. Your system, in my mind, has failed.

Readers: Okay, so maybe it’s not all the fault of Healthcare Now. But if I was going to put out a nationwide campaign for constituants to be heard…to support something I strongly believed in, I would want to make sure that the other end was prepared, so that everyone could be heard.

We all know that government isn’t the best run business, but come on peeps, (I’m talking to our Senators and Representatives now): You ask us to do our part? We’re trying to. Make it easy. Check your messages, clear your channels, and provide us with information that makes it easy for us to be heard. Is it really that difficult?

So that being said readers, if you decide to give it a go, which I hope that you do, please let me know if you were able to leave you two.

Peter: Welcome back in. I had a feeling when I saw no comments that there was an issue. I know you have brought up the war reparations before and it stunned me then that it has taken so long for compensation. It sounds like Bordallo does have the people’s best interest at heart. I hope that her decision was a good one and reparations will come to fruition soon. Hafa Adai.

Anonymous: Thanks for commenting. I agree with much of it. I have to chuckle when I read Clemente’s comment though. He says, “…anyone who still might be confused about the difference between news reporting and vibrant opinion, my suggestion would be to talk about the stories and the facts rather than attack the messenger. Well hello….have your messengers, your reporters, the ones that represent your news show, give the straight facts and quit lying and maybe then, we won’t try to shoot the messenger.

And FYI Clemente: Vibrant opinion? Not sure I would use that word coming from FOX News. Talking semantics here, I would use the word spirited or strong, or perhaps passionate. When I hear the word vibrant, to me it means brilliant, colorful (perhaps because I am a designer). But, I can tell you one thing, FOX’s commentary is neither brilliant nor colorful – It’s about as white as it gets. Get my drift?

Hi Roy:  Thanks for telling us more about you. Sorry to hear that your experience visiting your neighboring planets was not a good experience. Do you wish that life was the way it used to be? I hope that you’ll share more.

Cathy: Hey, sometimes a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do. :) How I wish that people only tuned in for the comedy of it, but people actually do listen and watch, thinking they are getting the facts.

It’s a fact that I need to post and get out of here. Stay dry; it’s pouring where I am.

Gratefully your blog host,
