Emails, Comey, and Stealing The Election

Good morning!

Readers: Yes, it’s back in the news. I thought we were done with the emails crap but here it is againComey is showing his party affiliation by putting out this latest slur against Hillary. The first being that unneeded bullshit slap at her when he couldn’t find any incriminating evidence against her.

That needless “fatherly” rebuff of her being “reckless” with her emails was pure bullshit pandering to the republican party. He was showing them he was still a loyal republican by giving them something to bash Hillary with.

Unfortunately for Comey, he was surprised to discover that they didn’t think that was enough. Is it ever enough with republicans? They wanted him to do like that bought and paid for Starr did and make up shit. You know the typical MO of many republicans – LSOSs. Since he didn’t, they vilified him. No surprise. They threatened to bring him up on charges, so the gutless wonder caved and put out this bullshit to give the republicans an 11 day election surprise.

The New Yorker stated that James Comey broke with Loretta Lynch and the Justice Department tradition when he made his bullshit slandering announcement. “….According to a well-informed administration official. Lynch expressed her preference that Comey follow the Department’s long standing practice of not commenting on ongoing investigations, and not taking any action that could influence the outcome of an election, but he said that he felt compelled to do otherwise.”

You don’t do that. What pressure was on him? The only pressure on him was to be honest, decent, responsible,  do the right thing, stick to tradition and follow the department’s longstanding practice. But Comey didn’t. He bent to his own desires to give something to the republicans to use.

What we have here is something that was not legally substantively significant, but it was something his republicans could use to be politically significant in depriving Hillary of votes or even the election. If Hillary were a man this would never have happened. And if it did, all hell would break loose. (11:30 Update: I just looked at the front page of the Huff Po. It looks like hell is breaking loose.)

This is especially noteworthy when you consider that the republicans are going all out to suppress the vote of their opponents. I blogged about it a few days ago but there is more. They have federal judges who will be assisting them like Comey, basically patriotically duplicitous creeps who will do anything to help the republicans win.

This is no joke. When I say that the republicans are ruthless, I mean it.

Those federal judges are giving rubber stamps to those states that are actively using absurd illegal tactics to suppress the votes. It is coincidental that the states with the acronym WON’T stop suppressing voting rights of OTWs and white democrat supporters, have republicans controlling every political office in those states. Wisconsin, Ohio, North Carolina, Texas, keep ignoring court orders to restore voting rights. Click here to read: https://www.thenation.com/article/gop-states-keep-ignoring-court-orders-to-restore-voting-rights/

Texas is a bunch of old white men. If they don’t suppress the vote they won’t win. Plain and simple. That’s why they have to suppress the votes.

Let’s get real. From here on out when we hear about suppressing the vote, let’s call it what it is – stealing.  This is no different than a third world country who steals votes so ensure the outcome of their election. And that is exactly what has been happening here.

My advice to you is to do like Social Butterfly suggest (That’s a nod to you /SB): get a book, an app, take your cell phone and watch something while you stand in those long lines the republicans have engineered.

There is no excuse to stay home. Get the fuck out and vote.

What’s on your mind?

Blog me.

Little Billy: Well, the answer certainly isn’t less government. One way to put the power in the hands of the people is to get big money out of politics. Overturn Citizens United. You can thank the republicans and STARK of SCOTUS for that one. That is why Hillary’s win and taking back the Senate is so important. I believe in the power of my vote and voting people out who aren’t serving the people.

Zen Lill: Love this – thanks for sharing.

How Many Trumps Have You Had To Deal With In Your Life?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 28th October 2016

Good morning!

From Quartz.com

HARASSER-IN-CHIEF

The scariest thing about Donald Trump’s misogyny is that it’s not unusual at all

rtx2flcq

He’s confident, we’ll give him that. (Reuters/Stephen Lam)

Two things typically happen when Donald Trump speaks in public: Either he lies, or it becomes clear to everyone that he literally has no idea what he is talking about. Yet he seems to possess the ability to spread ignorance without facing consequences. For proof, we need only look at Trump’s blatant misogyny.

As with other topics, Trump’s opinions on sexual assault–which include alleging that all Mexican immigrants are rapists, blaming rape in the military on the presence of women, defending Mike Tyson, or just using inept metaphors–are deeply misguided and misleading. Meanwhile, a recent The New York Times article detailing decades of Trump’s sexist behavior towards women cited dozens of examples described in anodyne terms as “unwelcome romantic advances, unending commentary on the female form… and unsettling workplace conduct.”

The media has been inconsistent in its treatment of Trump’s flagrant sexism, sometimes criticizing it but other times reporting his statements with little pushback. Meanwhile, 70% of women view Trump unfavorably, up from 58% last summer, according to Gallup researchpublished in April. This reflects the fact that even women in Trump’s own party, particularly the married white women who could previously be relied upon to vote for the GOP candidate, reject him.

Trump is also deeply unpopular with women because most of us have had to deal with men like Trump all our lives.

Women are undoubtedly reacting to Trump’s unrepentant and explicit misogyny. But Trump is also deeply unpopular with women because most of us have had to deal with men like Trump all our lives. The fact that his misogyny has done little to hamper his success exposes the degree to which many Americans, especially men, continue to downplay the existence and impact of sexism and harassment.

Women hate Trump because he rubs our faces in just how little people care.

In recent polls, white men say they prefer Trump over Clinton by wide margins. A recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found that up to 20% of Bernie Sanders supporters—whose most ardent supporters are often white men—would vote for Trump over Clinton. That a nonpartisan gender divide such as this one exists is a testament to the deeply intimate and complicated nature of sexism.

The more sick things he does the more he normalizes it and gets away with it. Why? Because sadly, his actions are pretty darn normal. Oh…it’s just…Trump being Trump, a man being a man.

Trump is also deeply unpopular with women because most of us have had to deal with men like Trump all our lives.

It’s a function of cultural low expectations that many women don’t even realize that unwanted physical advances, sexually explicit remarks and lewd communications constitute legal harassment. However, in the past year alone, women in the field sciencestechphilosophyastronomyeconomics, the financial sector, the political arena, the militarytruckingconstructionsportsretail and restaurantsprogressive spaces and conservative spaces have all come forward. Their stories of harassment spanned years, degrading their professional lives and opportunities and at times even tolerated by institutions.

In the workplace specifically, 75% of women reported being harassed by male coworkers, 49% by male clients or customers, and 38% by male managers. Harassment in America doesn’t come at the hands of a few “sick” outliers. These are our neighbors, friends, doctors, bus drivers, spouses, fathers and brothers. Our president. Harassment in America doesn’t come at the hands of a few “sick” outliers. These are our neighbors, friends, fathers, and brothers.

Our president. Harassment in America doesn’t come at the hands of a few “sick” outliers. These are our neighbors, friends, fathers, and brothers.

The Times piece, “Crossing the Line: How Donald Trump Behaved with Women in Private,” illustrates the way that distinguishing between public and private sexual harassment has made it that much harder to identify and eradicate. Men frequently enforce heteronormativity in order to assert dominance, and they are just as likely to do it in the boardroom as they are on the street. The separation of the world into “public” and “private” is deeply patriarchal, stemming in part from the idea that “women’s issues” were not matters of public concern. There is no difference between the stranger who “accidentally” cups your breast on the subway, the boss who gives you a prolonged holiday hug, and the tipsy neighbor who gets a “little handsy” at a backyard barbecue. The social spillover costs are high.

Practically the only thing that sets Trump apart from your average street harasser is his brazenness.

I have written dozens of articles about street harassment. When I ask people who they think is most likely to harass women default images of construction workers, truck drivers and blue-collar workers are common. So are immigrants and minorities.

Elite white men rarely come to mind, making them the community most likely to get away with it. The demographics of class and labor mean that actual streets and sidewalks might indeed have disproportionately higher numbers of men of color, immigrant or ethnic minority men. However, in other public spaces where women are routinely harassed (corporate environmentsdigital spaces), harassers are more likely to be white and more affluent.

Trump brags about a lot of things—his business acumen, his personal fortune, his sexual prowess. But he is also an example of the way harassment can be scaled. Men like Trump hold sway over women as individuals, and they also dominate the media and the C-suite. When it comes to mediaentertainment and tech, Trump is, demographically speaking, the average American business owner, investor, senior manager and decision-maker. What these “deciders” do in private matters to the public. And what they believe constitutes harassment influences what the public believes.

Meanwhile movies, video games, reality TV, professional sports, and pornography leverage objectification, racist tropes, and the eroticization of gender-based violence to the tune of millions and millions of dollars. It turns out sexism is quite lucrative.

Women compartmentalize our experiences in order to create a dissociative buffer.

And women are left to find our own coping mechanisms. We make distinctions between public and private, between “street” harassment and “work” harassment and “home” harassment. Compartmentalizing our experiences this way allows us to create a dissociative buffer between ourselves and contemporary gender and power dynamics.

The “art” of being Donald Trump is nothing but an ugly and age-old story about the consequences of fragile masculinity. If he is elected, the media, fully immersed in a “teach the controversy” approach to sexism and its impacts, will be at least partially culpable. Even if most men don’t express themselves the way Trump does, their silence—and their millions of votes—are revealing. Trump is just arrogant enough to reveal his structural privilege with his words.

Trump’s fans love him for his honesty, in all its sexist, racist, xenophobic glory. But what that really means is they love what he represents. Every day he makes their own behavior seem just a little less sexist and a little less racist by comparison. Every time Trump says something degrading about women on CNN and gets away with it, he creates a little bit more breathing room for all the employers who deep down want to require their female employees to wear high heels to work. If we elect him president, we will prove that despite the efforts of activists, America remains incapable of comprehensively and effectively confronting the harassment in our midst.

*****

Readers: This entire article is well written, but it is the last paragraph that I have had conversations about over the past few months with quite a few of my girlfriends. When someone, Trump, makes sexism and misogyny OK, and promotes it like it is no big deal, it gives young men and boys permission to do the same.

It sends a strong message to men and boys, that when a powerful public figure is running for office of the president and commits sexual assaults on women, and there is no consequences, then it is OK. It is not OK.

But men who prey on women, men who are just looking for an excuse to be disrespectful toward women, take advantage of or objectifying women, treating them as just a piece of meat, or a baby machine, can now think, “Hey, if America is going to accept Trump’s behavior, if America is going to let him get away with it, cool, I bet I can too.

It is truly sickening. And I can only imagine the ripple that is traveling throughout the minds of men in our country as we all witness just what is happening in this political environment and how accepted this sick behavior is by so many.

But what disturbs me the most is that although Trump’s declining with women, there are still many who are voting for him. Yes, I know that I shouldn’t be surprised over the dumb as a box of rocks white women, but as I’ve said before, the logic escapes me. We used to say here that white women will go kicking and screaming to their freedom. I still believe that. I also believe they’ll go kicking and screaming through the glass ceiling too.

I’m seeking solidarity with the women of this country, because really, are you that stupid to vote against your own best interest or put your wellbeing and livelihood in the hands of a man like Trump? Evidently some women do.

So imagine what is going through the minds of young women and girls when they see their mothers, their aunts, their grandmothers, sisters, and girlfriends, defend Trump, vote for Trump?

It is truly disgusting. And I can only imagine the ripple that is traveling throughout the minds of women in our country as we all witness just what is happening in this political environment and how accepted this sick behavior is by so many.

Women and young girls already have to deal with the sexism and misogyny that is rampant in our society. But when the female role models in their lives side with a man such as Trump, and accept his behavior as just “locker room talk,” what does that say? How does it make them feel about their self worth? Who knows how deep this will penetrate into their subconscious and how it will affect our society.

As we get closer to election day and I hear about all of the votes coming in, the poll reports, she’s ahead, he’s ahead, I feel uneasy. Florida is looking good for us though, and that is a huge deciding factor in which candidate will reach 270. As much as Trump knows he’s defeated, he’s still pushing it like he’s winning. Why would I expect him to be truthful even to himself when he’s delusional and living in a fantasyland?

So we need to keep that in mind and keep going until there is no more hours left to vote. It’s not only the presidential race that matters, it’s getting back the Senate so we have the power to get stuff done, like appoint a new SCOTUS.

Vote early and vote Dem all the way. It is the only way.

Trump, Women of Color, And The Justice System

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 24th October 2016

Good morning!

Trump calls Hillary a racist. Yet Trump is the one who attacked Judge Gonzalo Curiel because he was of Mexican descent. He also was the one who attacked Mexicans as rapists, bringing drugs and crime, and who attacked African-Americans and claimed they were all living in poverty with no jobs and schools that were no good.

Trump has a long history of racism, from his early days excluding African-American tenants from his family’s housing in New York to his racialized hysteria against the “Central Park Five,” to his more recent assertions that black people are inherently lazy, and insulting a gold star mother.

Why anyone especially any OTW would vote for him is mind boggling. And if you’re a woman of color, forget about it. Any vote for Trump is a ticket into poverty and possibly prison. Because Trump will do nothing to protect you or support you.

From the Center for American Progress:

6 Things You Should Know About Women of Color and the Criminal Justice System

CriminalJustice_PRIMARY

A post-traumatic stress disorder patient poses for a portrait on February 24, 2016.

The policies implemented under the so-called tough-on-crime, war on drugs, and “Broken Windows” approaches to policing have led to an explosion in the U.S. prison population. One in three Americans carries the burden of a criminal record, and nearly half of American children have a parent with a criminal record. Americans with criminal records suffer lifelong consequences, such as barriers to housing, education, and employment, among others. Between 1980 and 2014, the population of women who were incarcerated grew 700 percent.

These policies have a disproportionate impact on women of color. Here are six things that all Americans should know about women of color and the criminal justice system:

  1. African American women are more likely than women of other races to go to prison during their lifetimes. According to a 2003 Bureau of Justice Statistics special report, 1 in every 18 African American women will go to prison during their lifetime if incarceration rates continue at the same rate. This is far greater than the rates for white women and Latinas—1 in 111 women and 1 in 45 women, respectively.
  2. African American women are significantly overrepresented in state and federal prison populations. According to a 2014 Bureau of Justice Statistics report, the incarceration rate of African American women was more than double the incarceration rate of white women. More specifically, 109 out of every 100,000 African American women in the United States were sentenced to state or federal prison by the end of 2014, compared with 53 out of every 100,000 white women.
  3. The war on drugs has negatively affected women of color. Women are more likely than men to be incarcerated for a drug offense. Furthermore, research has shown that although all women use and sell drugs at the same rate, women of color—particularly African American women and Latinas—have a higher likelihood of becoming involved in the criminal justice system for a drug offense. Generally, women involved in the drug trade have scant knowledge or say over actual drug dealing operations, which gives them little leverage in negotiating shorter sentences.
  4. Incarcerated women are likely to be victims of abuse, have a history of substance abuse, and/or suffer from mental health issues. A 2007 study found that nearly all incarcerated women have experienced a “traumatic event”—with 71 percent reporting that they were “exposed to domestic violence.” According to a 2008 study, 73 percent of women in state prisons and 47 percent of women in federal prisons used drugs prior to going to prison. Additionally, approximately 73 percent of women in state prisons and 75 percent of women in local jails have signs of mental health disorders, compared with only 12 percent of women in the general U.S. population.
  5. Approximately 12,000 pregnant women, or approximately 6 percent of incarcerated women, are incarcerated each year. Many of these women are subjected to the dehumanizing and dangerous practice of shackling during childbirth. This practice is not only dangerous to the mother—limiting her mobility to manage the pain of childbirth—but it also puts the child at risk, reducing physicians’ ability to safely deliver the baby. Unfortunately, 28 states have no laws prohibiting the practice.
  6. African American and American Indian girls have higher rates of placement in juvenile residential detention facilities than those of other racial and/or ethnic groups. African American girls are also more likely than other girls to face school suspensions. African American and American Indian female juveniles were placed in residential detention facilities at rates—1.7 times and more than 4 times, respectively—higher than their non-Hispanic white counterparts. Additionally, African American and American Indian female juveniles were placed in these facilities at rates of 113 per every 100,000 girls and 167 per every 100,000 girls, respectively, while non-Hispanic white female juveniles were held in these facilities at a rate of 35 per every 100,000 girls.

The legacy of the nation’s broken criminal justice system has affected all Americans, particularly women of color. Women are the fastest-growing portion of the U.S. prison population, and data show that women of color are disproportionately affected by the system. Criminal justice reform is essential to make sure that these women have the opportunity to succeed once they have paid their debts to society.

Readers, especially my sisters: These stats are horrific. Do you think they will get any better with Trump at the helm? Hell no. Trump disrespects, and objectifies women…even his own daughter. If he does that to his own daughter, his own flesh and blood, how do you think you’ll be treated? If you think it’s bad now, you have no idea what is coming if you vote for Trump.

Clinton is the only clear and safe choice for my sisters in this country. Clinton has been fighting for women for decades. She is the only one who can empathize with our plight, and do something about it. Let’s take a stand, come together in solidarity, and do this. It’s time. #ImWithHer. Are you? #GoVote. Early voting is happening in some states. Today is the last day in California to register. Get out and do it.

The Good Ole Days Were Only Good For White Males

Good morning!

Slavery has not ended in this country; it has just been modernized in the form of mass incarceration. I am saddened and sickened by the people who support Trump. They have no idea what they’re voting for. Or perhaps they do.

From the Huff Po:

This Chilling Video Makes It Clear What’s Really Going On At Trump Rallies

The past isn’t dead. It’s not even past.

John Lewis

State troopers swing billy clubs to break up a civil rights voting march in Selma, Alabama, March 7, 1965.

Since Republican nominee Donald Trump launched his presidential campaign last year, his fervent supporters have helped turn his rallies into the most high-octane political events in recent memory.

Trump’s rallies are frequently hotbeds of racism, misogyny, Islamophobia and anti-immigrant sentiment. His supporters have threatened journalists and assaulted protesters on multiple occasions.

Trump himself has encouraged this bloodthirsty rage by reminiscing about the “good old days” when protesters and outsiders at political events could expect to be “roughed up,” and perhaps even leave “on a stretcher.” The nominee at one point also promised to pay the legal fees of anyone who’d violently assault protesters at his events. (He later backtracked and claimed he’d never said that.)

Meanwhile, Trump and his advisers dismiss any suggestion that there could be an undercurrent of violence or rage at his events. “Are Trump rallies the most fun?” Trump asked a crowd earlier this year, as a protester was being dragged out of a convention hall.

Even so, it wasn’t until I watched this chilling new clip from the Netflix documentary “13TH” that I understood the full significance of the violence at Trump’s rallies.

What we’re seeing today has its roots in one of the darkest chapters in the nation’s history. This clip should not only scare you ― it should remind you of how much work there’s left to do in the struggle for civil rights.

“13TH,” directed by the renowned documentary filmmaker Ava DuVernay, takes its title from the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which outlawed slavery after the Civil War.

DuVernay’s film zeroes in on a particular 13-word section of the amendment that permits involuntary servitude “as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.” From this clause, “13TH” draws a direct line to the mass incarceration crisis facing the country today.

“13TH” is available for streaming on Netflix. Watch the trailer below.

Survivors Of Rape And Forced Marriage Seek Justice In Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge Trials

Good morning.

I don’t know about you, but I just can’t wait for Hillary to be our first female president, and be done with this election so that we can focus on real issues – decisions on those issues that will affect our entire country and the world. I’m excited to feel the power of a female at the helm, and a Congress that hopefully will go blue so we can continue with what Obama got started.

Not that calling out Trump on sexual harassment, lying, misogyny, racism, etc. aren’t blog worthy topics, they are. But I’m just sick of the drama and the creep all over the news pandering to his “deplorables.” Yes, I echo Clinton’s words because after all that we have learned about Trump, in my opinion, anyone who votes for him is a deplorable. Go ahead and call me out, say, “Fuck you, Michelle and your liberal views,” I can take it. And I won’t back down.

I miss posting important issues that I’m passionate about – issues that need to be brought to light. Issues that otherwise might not get any support, action, or media coverage. And of course those topics usually are about those that need to be illuminated; women’s rights, OTW rights, animal protection, health, the environment. If you’ve been here long enough, you know what I’m talking about.

Speaking of women’s rights, I found this article while perusing the net. My sisters suffer so much at the hands of men and their governments, all over the world. It continues to tear me apart when I read what so many women have to endure on a daily basis for much of their lives. Much of why I’m excited about Hillary is because she has been fighting for women and girls for decades. Finally we will have a president, a woman, who can deeply empathize with the women across the world. I can’t wait to see the changes and assist her in all that we as a country need to do to make this world a better place for all.

Yes, unlike the Obama administration I was not prepared for racism to raise its ugly head over the past 8 years. I was naive to think that electing a black president, people would change and racism would decline – au contraire –  it only got the hate groups to come out in droves, pushing and promoting their hateful messages of dislike of our great president.

With Hillary at the helm, misogyny and sexism will most likely do the same, surfacing more than we’re seeing it now.  If we think this is bad, just look how “Black Lives Matter” came about and we’ll have an idea just how bad it will get.

Well, no need to talk about it now. In due time…

Back to the topic du jour from the Huff Po:

Survivors Of Rape And Forced Marriage Seek Justice In Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge Trials

CAMBODIA-UN-TRIAL-GENOCIDE

In January, witness Math Sor spoke to the Khmer Rouge tribunal about the treatment of Cham people by the regime. The current trial is hearing from survivors of forced marriage to decide if the regime’s top leaders committed crimes against humanity.

In Cambodia, the U.N.-backed Khmer Rouge tribunal hears from survivors of forced marriage, but critics say the court should also cover other acts of gender-based violence.

“I just couldn’t understand why falling in love was a crime,” says Youk Chhang, executive director of the Documentation Center of Cambodia, an organization that records atrocities that took place under the Khmer Rouge. From 1975–79, Pol Pot’s brutal regime devastated Cambodia, and an estimated 1.7 million people died from starvation or disease, or were executed.

The Khmer Rouge, known as the Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK), controlled every part of people’s lives, even love and sexuality. Chhang was only 15 when he witnessed the Khmer Rouge killing a couple because “they fell in love without permission.” To make sure Cambodians married the “right” people, namely those who were loyal to the party, the CPK forced men and women to marry each other.

Survivors of forced marriage are currently giving testimony in Case 002/02, the latest trial to take place at the Khmer Rouge tribunal in Phnom Penh, otherwise known as the Extraordinary Chambers in the Court of Cambodia (ECCC). Evidence of forced marriage will be used to determine if senior leaders of the regime committed crimes against humanity.

The Khmer Rouge used forced marriage to exact ultimate control over relationships, as couples were expected to procreate and produce the next generation of party adherents. No one knows how many people were forcibly married by “Angkar” (the communist party), but mass wedding ceremonies, some consisting of more than 100 couples, took place across Cambodia.

Survivors appearing before the court have described how the regime pressured them to marry. “I refused [to marry] several times, but finally the sector committee said I was a stubborn person,” Sa Lay Hieng said in court. Scared of being killed, Hieng was coerced into marrying a man she did not like. Another witness, who was granted anonymity, said she was made to marry a Khmer Rouge officer in a collective ceremony; when she refused his advances on their wedding night, her new spouse complained to his commander, who then raped her. “I had to bite my lip and shed my tears, but I didn’t dare to make any noise, because I was afraid I would be killed,” she said. She was eventually led back to her husband.

The final testimonies relating to forced marriage will be heard in the coming weeks. But some experts argue that other heinous sexual crimes committed during the Khmer Rouge era, such as rape outside of forced marriage, have been overlooked by the court.

In a study by the Transcultural Psychosocial Organization, an NGO that provides counseling to victims appearing before the court, a third of female interviewees witnessed rape outside forced marriage. This finding is echoed by the Documentation Center of Cambodia, which has collected a “significant number of documents” detailing at least 156 cases of rape by Khmer Rouge comrades in cooperatives and detention centers. “The women who were raped were accused of having served in the CIA, KGB or other enemies of Angkar, and taken to be smashed [killed],” said Youk Chhang of the Documentation Center.

Farina So, an expert in gender-based violence perpetrated by the Communist Party of Kampuchea, says that “hundreds and hundreds” of rapes occurred, adding that cadres “used it as a tool to victimize women, to silence them.” In the course of her research, So has interviewed numerous survivors of sexual assault; one of these women, Tang Kim, was considered “an enemy of Angkar” and in 1976 was rounded up – along with eight other women – and readied for execution in Kampong Chhnang province, central Cambodia. While Kim awaited her fate, she could hear the other women being raped and then murdered – “I was terrified to see people being killed off and buried one by one” – recalls Kim in a film made by the Cambodian Documentation Center. She continues, “I saw a Khmer Rouge soldier slashing a woman’s abdomen; they cut it open and took out the fetus.” After being gang-raped by the soldiers, Kim managed to escape and went into hiding.

According to So, Kim tried to submit her civil party application to the Khmer Rouge tribunal, but it was rejected because prosecutors are addressing only sexual abuse within forced marriage. It was, says So, a decision that “really disappointed” Kim and other rape survivors, many of whom have spent decades summoning up the courage to speak about their ordeal.

When Women & Girls Hub approached the Khmer Rouge tribunal to ask why the current trial is focusing exclusively on forced marriage, the court’s spokesperson, Lars Olsen, said co-investigating judges had concluded that rape outside forced marriage was not an official policy of the Khmer Rouge. He pointed to this statement from the tribunal: “Those who were accused of ‘immoral’ behavior, including rape, were often re-educated or killed [so] it cannot be considered that rape was one of the crimes used by CPK leaders to implement the common purpose.”

The survivors and their lawyers, who campaigned for years to have forced marriage added to the list of crimes prosecuted in court, are waiting for the expected judgment in late 2017.

Readers: Under the Khmer Rouge, women were beaten, tortured, raped and often gang raped. It was a part of everyday life for so many women during the regime. Women were considered as nothing more than bearers and raisers of children loyal to the regime and as pieces of meat available to the leaders and soldiers for their sexual pleasure. Rapes were also perpetrated outside the forced marriages during the regime.

It’s about time that these women’s struggle for justice came to an end.
