Good morning!

Debra: That’s new news to me. Thanks for sharing.

Al: Yes, posting these absolutely do help. Thanks. It makes it easier for me and my readers to be informed and take action all on one blog. Or at least one of the many they might be reading. Keep ‘em coming. Did Adam chime in? I didn’t see?

Debbie: Sadly, it is a constant struggle and some women make it harder because they are not on the side of women. Did you see that woman last night when the camera panned on her at the Sate of the Union Speech, when Obama talked about equal pay for women? She wasn’t even clapping her hands in approval. Not sure who she was but that is the kind of woman I am talking about. Anyway, your reminder is noted. It is a good reminder for me. Thanks.

Speaking of women not supporting women:

North Dakota Personhood Measure Passes State Senate

North Dakota has only one abortion clinic and has been rated the worst state in the country for women, but the State Senate passed two bills on Thursday will make it even more difficult for women in the state to access abortion care.

North Dakota lawmakers passed aPersonhood Constitutional Amendment initiative on Thursday that would amend the state’s constitution to give legal rights and protections to human embryos. If the ballot initiative passes the House, North Dakota voters will decide on it during the 2014 elections.

“We are intending that it be a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade, since Scalia said that the Supreme Court is waiting for states to raise a case,” state Sen. Margaret Sitte (R), the sponsor of the personhood initiative, told HuffPost.

The Senate also passed a bill on Thursday that could shut down the North Dakota’s one abortion clinic, the Red River Women’s Clinic in Fargo, by requiring abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at a local hospital. A similar law in Mississippi is currently threatening to close the only clinic in that state because the hospitals near the Jackson clinic are all refusing the applications of doctors who perform abortions.

Sitte said that while the bill could effectively end abortion in North Dakota, she supports the bill because it would protect women who experience medical complications after the procedure. “Yes, this bill could possibly close the abortion clinic [in Fargo],” she said. “I’m not saying that’s the intention of the law. The intention of the law is to ensure that women have adequate health care and the follow-up care that they need.”

The State Senate rejected a second personhood bill introduced by Sitte that would have made it difficult for women to use in vitro fertilization. The bill would have prohibited doctors from disposing of unused embryos after an in vitro cycle, which would force families to pay hundreds of dollars each year to keep the embryos frozen indefinitely. It would have also prevented women with cancer or other illnesses from using a sperm or egg donor to conceive through in vitro fertilization.

“It’s like a bad episode of the twilight zone,” said Rania Batrice, communications director the North Dakota Democratic Party. “These bills just open the door for every other state in the country to interject themselves into everybody’s bedroom.”

Sitte said she fully expects North Dakotans to pass the personhood measure in 2014, which declares “the inalienable right to life of every human being at any stage of development must be recognized and defended.”

“We know North Dakotans are pro-life,” she said. “This just puts a statement of fact into the Constitution.”

Sarah Stoesz, the CEO of Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, expressed her disappointment on Thursday with the Senate’s votes.

“Politicians in North Dakota are wasting taxpayer time advancing what would no doubt become another divisive constitutional amendment with dangerous unintended consequences for North Dakota families,” she said in a statement. “Planned Parenthood will continue to fight these legislative attacks on women’s health in partnership with a broad coalition of doctors, patients, teachers, lawyers and other concerned North Dakotans who do not want to see politicians inserting themselves into the private medical decision-making of women and families in our state.”

*******

Could it get any worse for women? Yes, if women such as Sen. Margaret Sitte (R) have any say in the matter, which unfortunately, currently she does.

Speaking of the State of the Union speech, I thought Obama was good. Very good. I am HOPEful of Obama’s plans for us.

Social Butterfly: Good news. Thanks so much for posting those that oppose. Heads up girls…as /SB stated, we need to vote the bastards out of office.

Let’s make sure it passes the House. Thanks Al. Done.

Ronnie: Or should I call you Radical Ronnie with those extreme statements? I don’t make extreme blanket statements as you did – I don’t say ALL men are bad, and I have never said, women NEVER walk on their relationships or marriage, or men are 100% to blame for every relationship that doesn’t work out.

I like CeeCee’s response. Not that I think men are totally responsible for birth control as I wouldn’t trust a man if men were the ones taking a pill instead of women – men don’t get pregnant – hence they aren’t going to be as concerned about it. But if you don’t want to get a woman pregnant then don’t cum inside of her. Put a jacket on. But from what I know about men (not ALL), when it comes to sex, many (not ALL), are more concerned about getting their rocks off sans rubber than worrying about getting a woman pregnant or even catching or spreading something.

Doris: GOP – Greed Over Principle. Nice. If I have not heard that before, I have certainly seen it in many examples from the GOP.

Got to run. Blog me.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. One Billion Rising On V-Day

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 11th February 2013

“…we win, and violence against women ends, or we die trying…”

Good morning!

Yes, Social Butterfly: Ask and you shall receive. :) I was planning on blogging about it this week. Today is as good as any other day before the big V-day.  I wish you were going to be there. It would be fun to dance in the street with you, sans my back straight jacket of course!

One Billion Raped, One Billion Rising

There are now 7 billion people on the planet, roughly half of whom are women.

Recent statistics state that 1 in 3 women will be raped or beaten during her lifetime.

So even by low estimates, we are facing a worldwide epidemic of Violence Against Women that will affect — no, devastate — ONE BILLION of our mothers, daughters and sisters.

AND for every ACTION there must be an equal and opposite REACTION.

For every woman beaten, a woman is rising against such brutality. For every Jyoti, there is a Rita out on the streets chanting, NO MORE!

Eve Ensler and V-DAY have launched a massive international campaign entitled ONE BILLION RISING. Inspired by, and in sisterhood with, the wave of protests raging across South Asia today, One Billion Rising is part of the global REACTION to rape.

This V-DAY, February 14th, ONE BILLION OF US will rise up in towns and cities around the world. People like you and me, coming together to show their support for a different kind of world.

Because chances are, if you’re reading this, you have been beaten or raped (at least once) or you know someone who has. You have survived, they have survived, I have survived- and now it’s time to focus our energy into changing these odds for the sake of our daughters and their daughters to come.

To begin with, here is the ultimate fact everyone needs to understand:
WOMEN ARE INDESTRUCTIBLE.

For every woman killed by the fist, the stone, or the pyre, countless women wake up, stand up and join the movement to end Violence Against Women. Every senseless death must breed a thousand new warriors for change. They may be able to separate us individually and attack us on the streets, in our homes, in the courtroom… but once united, we form a force more powerful than rape that cannot be defeated.

FOR ONE BILLION RAPED, ONE BILLION MUST RISE.

And that’s where you come in: Women, girls, men and boys.

Men and boys have a role to play in this movement too, especially men in positions of power. They can be models and teachers on how to love and support the women and girls in their lives. And every man should speak up and take action when a woman is being harassed, threatened or abused. Two-time Super Bowl Champ Jarvis Green has joined V-DAY’s Call To Action For Men, setting an example of how male role-models can help us put an end to Violence Against Women.

We must also begin to look beyond the back alleys for the root causes of Violence Against Women and shed light on the places where impunity and complacency fester. Dr. Vandana Shiva does an illuminating job at unveiling the connection between violence targeting women and policies that disregard the role women play in the world economy. Reminding us “that the rape of the Earth and rape of women are intimately linked, both metaphorically in shaping our worldviews and materially in shaping women’s everyday lives.”

As an activist focused on the human rights of women and girls in war zones, I have seen more than my share of the destruction caused by rape and state-sponsored Violence Against Women. I have been made sick by it.

But one thing I learned from my sisters in the Congo, where nearly every woman I met had been raped, is that once the stigma is erased, once enough women have been ravaged and left for dead, what’s left behind is courage and intelligence and an unbreakable strength that continues to rise… and we rise with a primal scream that roars “you’re going to have to kill every last one of us to keep us quiet!”

And what happens when every last woman is gone? Mankind’s future is wholly dependent on womankind and our wombs. By attacking women and raping little girls (you know who you are and now I’m speaking to you), you only add fuel to our firefight; you multiply our armies for justice and security; you amplify our collective furor.

The only end game I can see is either we win, and violence against women ends, or we die trying… and in both cases you lose. Checkmate rapist!

When I’m feeling distraught and consumed with grief from yet another gang rape on a bus, I turn instead to the stories of everyday heroines out there. These are the women waking up every day, putting on their armor and taking on the Goliath that is Violence Against Women. Women like those of La Ruta Pacifica in Colombia, whose groundbreaking direct actions join campesino, black, indigenous and urban women in massive mobilizations, or “rutas,” held in locations controlled by armed groups who specifically target women. Or heroines like Radhia Nasraoui of Tunisia, who has spent more than 30 years standing up for increased legal protections for women, despite being consistently harassed, threatened and beaten.

These women, and thousands like them, are leading us out of this violent nightmare. Inspired by their will, their steadfast vision and their immense courage, I am motivated to rise up too.

Although I am in the relative safety of my home in the United States, women are being raped and abused in record numbers all around me! That sad fact should infect you like a parasite, and take up host in your brain, as it has in mine…until you can’t help but get off the couch and join us in doing something about it.

This Valentine’s Day, instead of honoring the women you love with cancer-causing sweets orenvironment-destroying greeting cards, do something REVOLUTIONARY!

Events and flash mobs are planned all over the globe! CLICK HERE to find the event nearest you, andGO HERE to learn the flash mob dance “Break The Chain” at home (also available for those with compromised mobility HERE).

Join us to add your voice to the Global Movement To End Violence Against Women. Just by showing up at an event, you are altering the course of history and making our numbers greater. If you can’t get to an event, at the very least, SIGN THIS PETITION to tell the leaders of the world that Violence Against Women is deplorable and demand change now!

ONE BILLION RISING IS:
• A global strike
• An invitation to dance
• A call to men and women to refuse to participate in the status quo until rape and rape
culture ends
• An act of solidarity, demonstrating to women the commonality of their struggles and their
power in numbers
• A refusal to accept violence against women and girls as a given
• A new time and a new way of being

We may not be able to win every battle, but together we will win this war.

In Solidarity,
Kiri Westby
Changemaker/Rulebreaker/Storyteller

Readers: There are events happening all over the world on V-day. If you plan on participating, blog me and let me know the city you are from. If you have no plans and want to join us and dance in protest, click here to find an event near you on V-day…or just create your own event – it’s never too late to gather people and dance in protest for women. I’m going to be participating in few events. I HOPE to see you there!

Al: You have reason to be concerned. When people are struggling to get work or have had to take a cut in pay, just like with food where they can’t afford products that are organic or without added chemicals etc., they purchase less quality products that are potentially harmful for them.

Our economy needs to thrive for all, so that people can afford to purchase products that support their health in all areas of their lives. Otherwise, they are going to be forced to buy cheap toxic goods from Walmart, and eat cheap food that is laced with chemicals, and end up needing many drugs to deal with their illnesses. It is the major corps and big pharma that makes all the money while the people suffer trying to survive. It seems like a never ending horrible cycle of life for many.

Oh…signed it. Done. Thanks.

Just Noticing: “Observations Of A Blogger”

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 10th February 2013

Good morning!

“Just noticing…”

It is the weekend. I usually post things that are a bit of a lighter read on the weekends because some of you might take the weekend off and may not be here reading. But then I thought, do rapists take the weekend off? No. Do abusers take the weekend off? No. Do women get time off from their suffering and living in fear because it is the weekend? Unfortunately no.

Women here and around the world who endure such horrific lives, do so on a daily basis. There is no relief. Their only relief is that they didn’t get raped that day…or that they weren’t abused on a particular day.  But the fear is still there…the fear of when is the next time going to happen?

Many of us thankfully, have no idea what it is like to live in fear on a daily basis, but many women do. Just because it is the weekend and we are taking some time off, the abused women around the world need to know that we still care and are not forgetting about them.

“Just noticing…”

Yes, Patricia I did hear about it, and it was in my queue to blog it. Sickening. Here’s the write for those of you who didn’t read about it.

‘Dafne,’ 9-Year-Old Girl, Gives Birth To Baby Girl In Mexico

A 9-year-old girl in Mexico has reportedly given birth.

The girl, identified as “Dafne” by The Telegraph, reportedly delivered a 5.7 pound baby by cesarean section on Jan. 27 in Zoquipan Hospital in Jalisco, an area in western Mexico.

The girl was 8 years old when she became pregnant. “This is a rape or child sex abuse case,” Corona added, according to the Agence France-Presse. Dafne is below the age of consent as stated by Mexican law.

“The father is a boy who is 17, but we have not found him, since he ran away,” the mother of the girl told officials, according to the AFP.

Due to her young age, we don’t know if she is being entirely truthful,” Lino Ginzalez Corona, spokesperson at Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office, said in a press conference, ABC reports.

The new mother is one of 11 children, according to ABC, and her parents were unable to watch her while they worked.

There have been only a handful of recent reported births among children this young, including a 10-year-old Colombian girl who gave birth last year, and a 9-year-old Chinese girl who gave birth to a healthy baby boy in 2010.

“Just noticing…”

Victoria: I hear you. Last Thursday the Senate rejected the GOP’s alternative to the bill, and rightfully so. Their version would have stripped out protections for LGBT victims of domestic violence, removed a key protection for Native American women and shifted the overall focus of VAWA away from women and more toward men.

Can you believe that? VAWA is about protecting women, and repub Senator Grassley obviously only care about the men.  If he and other repubs had their way, tribal courts wouldn’t have the ability to prosecute non-Native American men who abuse Native American women on tribal lands. Basically a free right to rape and get away with it. Gee, do ya think that is why this sort of thing happens at such high level?

And…if they had their way they would remove the word “women” from VAWA’s largest grant programHello? The “W” in VAWA stands for “Women” (!) By removing the word “women” they are effectively broadening the scope of the original 1994 law to include male victims of violence, who face far less victimization than their female counterparts. Sickening isn’t it? Propose something else if you want to protect the men.

Oh… and it doesn’t stop there.

Grassley’s proposal would also take out protections for LGBT victims of domestic violence and place new restrictions on U visas, which are given to immigrant victims of domestic violence who help law enforcement officials to identify and prosecute their abusers.

Thankfully it was rejected by a vote of 34-65.

The Senate is lining up a Monday vote for the bipartisan bill, authored by Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho). It has 62 cosponsors, which essentially ensures its passage.

“Just noticing…”

…My heart is feeling especially heavy today. I heard about this young 17-year old girl in India who was gang raped and killed. I heard her story on the radio, and the details of the rape, and it was one of the most brutal stories that I have ever heard. I went to bed the other night thinking of her and I couldn’t sleep. I just can’t seem to get it out of my head how men can do this to women.

The following day I perused the net to find the story only to hear about the rape but none of the details of the rape. No one was talking about it because it was so horrific, and the family didn’t want to release the details. The articles stated that the people who found her were so affected by the scene of her body that they needed to be counseled.

I found this article this morning. It gives the horrific details but one was left out from the chronicle that I heard on the radio. Not only was a broken glass bottle shoved inside of her, but her stomach was sliced open and her organs were pulled out and strewn all over the site. I only bring this up not to sensationalize the story, as it is what I heard on the radio, but because it is what happened and should be told. It should be told how horrific men are. This is a brutal act done by men to women, and no details should be left out showing how sick men are.

If that doesn’t inspire you to do something, I don’t know what will. What is it with men on this planet? Why is there so much hatred toward women?

Here’s the write:

South Africa Rallies Against Fatal Gang-Rape

The brutal rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl has shaken the country’s consciousness—and inspired South Africans to share their own stories of sexual violence.

Eight days ago, in a crime that shocked South Africa, 17-year-old Anene Booysen was brutally gang raped. Her throat was slit; her fingers and legs shattered. The attackers had stuck a broken glass bottle inside her body and left her for dead on a construction site in the small, quiet Southern Cape town of Bredasdorp, about 120 miles from Cape Town. A security guard found her near lifeless body. She identified and named at least one of the alleged rapists, but died soon thereafter.

South Africa, a deeply wounded nation that still grapples with the scars of a violent apartheid past, has been jolted to its core by the gratuitous act of violence visited upon this young woman.  Booysen’s case has also shattered the silence around the country’s rape crisis, which seldom gets the national attention it deserves.

This time, though, the national reaction to a rape–finally–seems to be different. This is a good thing. But it is also surprising, because collective denial about South Africa’s outrageous rape statistics has become as normal here as the rapes themselves. According to officials, rape is massively underreported in the country due to low conviction rates and the chilling effect of silence and shame. But the Medical Research Council estimates that up to 3,600 rapes happen daily in this nation of close to 52 million people. This places South Africa among the countries with the highest incidences of rape worldwide–and, outside of war zones, makes it one of the most violent societies, especially towards women.

It is difficult to know why this particular attack has yanked South Africans out of their complacency. For years now, there has been a particularly brutal epidemic of rapes and murders of black lesbian women in South Africa’s townships, for example. But activists have never really succeeded in getting South Africans to react with urgency and collective determination to root out sexual violence.

The newfound outrage over Booysen’s death might be connected to the global focus on a similar gang-rape in India, which has enflamed that nation and set off calls for harsher sentences for rapists. It’s possible that the India case could have quietly touched the hearts and minds of South Africans more than they realized—and that Booysen’s tragic demise might herald South Africa’s own awakening on the issue. Whatever the reason, the country is now embarking, somewhat clumsily and haphazardly but with unprecedented frankness, on a journey of talking about an evil that had been ignored for too long.

Over the last two days alone, I’ve lost count of the number of stories listeners have shared with me on my daily chat show on Talk Radio 702. One married man is grappling with the memory of a woman who molested him when he was very young. She was his mother’s friend. Another man stopped his car while driving to call in to the show and publicly, for the first time, talk about criminals who had hijacked him years ago but only drove off with his car after gang-raping him. Women and girls make up the highest number of victims, including many of my media colleagues who have shared their stories with me in confidence after reading about my own rape in my recent book A Bantu in My Bathroom.

That’s enough for today.

Readers: For those of you with no electricity and too much snow, I hope you’re safe and warm.

Al: Thanks for reposting your link. It is always worth reposting something to bring light to the abuse of women and to show what we can do to help.

Lloyd: Thanks too for your encouragement.

I have not gotten through all of yesterday’s comments but I will later on today. Got to run now.

Wonderful Women Of The World

Good morning!

I love this woman’s passion, and her charming way of story telling. This is a TED talk from 2007. As much as some things have changed for women, much of what she talks about is unfortunately still present to this day.

Isabel Allende: Tales of passion

As a novelist and memoirist, Isabel Allende writes of passionate lives, including her own. Born into a Chilean family with political ties, she went into exile in the United States in the 1970s — an event that, she believes, created her as a writer. Her voice blends sweeping narrative with touches of magical realism; her stories are romantic, in the very best sense of the word. Her novels include The House of the Spirits, Eva Luna and The Stories of Eva Luna, and her latest, Ines of My Soul and La Suma de los Dias (The Sum of Our Days). And don’t forget her adventure trilogy for young readers – City of the BeastsKingdom of the Golden Dragon and Forest of the Pygmies.

As a memoirist, she has written about her vision of her lost Chile, in My Invented Country, and movingly tells the story of her life to her own daughter, in PaulaHer book Aphrodite: A Memoir of the Senses memorably linked two sections of the bookstore that don’t see much crossover: Erotica and Cookbooks. Just as vital is her community work: The Isabel Allende Foundation works with nonprofits in the SF Bay Area and Chile to empower and protect women and girls — understanding that empowering women is the only true route to social and economic justice.

Readers: Everyday I read and hear more and more horrific things that happen to women. When any woman dedicates her life and time to helping to empower and protect women and girls, she is considered a Wonderful Woman Of The World to me.  Do you know anyone who should hold this title?

Girls: What are you doing to become a Wonderful Woman Of The World? Blog me.

Guys: Don’t want to leave you out. What are you doing to be a Wonderful Man…?

We all need to do something

Happy Saturday everyone!

Flap Your Lips Friday

Good morning!

When I am out in the field, fashion is my focus, and not much else until I get home to watch the news, and see what’s up on my blog. And as I expected, my readers are up on the latest.

It seems many of you are already flapping your lips about Christopher Dorne. I did some reading myself on the net and your comments of course. But when I got to your comment David, (Thanks, David) I did a little investigating myself on the the trigger happy cops taking over Torrence. And this is what I found, which is pretty much of a repeat of what you found.

However, I thought it was worth repeating just to make sure that people are aware so they can take the precautions they need to, to stay safe. Innocent people are getting shot at by thugs with guns, and perhaps there are people who are not in the know of the craziness happening out there.

Trigger happy cops shoot up two vehicles unrelated to Christopher Dorner

If you live in Southern California and own any kind of vehicle that resembles Christopher Dorner’s truck, I suggest you stay indoors.  Otherwise, cops will just unload a hail of bullets on you like they did today in Torrance.  Two vehicles were shot up.  One of the trucks was occupied by two women delivering newspapers.  One of which, was shot in the back.

From KTLA5:

Los Angeles and Torrance Police were involved in two shootings in Torrance early Thursday morning after police came across vehicles similar to one sought by authorities in a manhunt for ex-LAPD officer suspected of shooting three other officers.

Neither incident involved the suspect, Christopher Jordan Dorner who was at large Thursday morning.

The first incident occurred about 5:30 a.m. in the 19500 block of Redbeam Avenue and involved two women delivering newspapers in a blue pickup.

The women were shot by LAPD one in the hand, the other in the back.

Both were taken to local hospitals and are in critical condition.

The pickup was riddled with bullet holes and what appeared to newspapers were in the street.

******

As always…Peace & Love.
