After the Drama of Villeurbanne

The Minister of the Interior, Manuel Valls, found the right words. The authorities of the Republic, national and regional, reacted as one would expect. And from one side of the political spectrum nearly to the other, disapproval was unanimous. However, this affair (three young Jews assaulted with blows from hammers and iron bars last Saturday in Villeurbanne) remains eminently troubling.

The simple fact that it is possible, that there are neighborhoods in France where three teenagers, if they are wearing kippas, cannot go for a walk without the risk of being beaten up, is clearly tragic. And to add to it, when one reads that this is not the first time, when one learns that the same kind of incident took place in the same area just months ago but was not reported in the press, when the National Bureau of Vigilance against Antisemitism tells us that acts of aggressions of this kind have become increasingly frequent since the killings at Toulouse and Montauban but that the system is getting used to them, that sometimes it barely bothers to register them and that nearly all, when they do not involve fatalities, fade into the background and appear insignificant, one can only think, “Clearly, something is rotten in the Republic of France; there is, in this very habituation, in this banalization, in this slow but sure metastasis of the poison of anti-Semitism, something fetid that we must not let pass.”

I know that, as I write these lines, we know nothing of the identity of the members of this new gang of barbarians. And I know how perilous it is, in such circumstances, to indulge in games of calculation, incrimination, and other demonic causalities.

Nonetheless.

Is it really by chance that this assault occured on the morrow of a campaign where we have watched a candidate, Madame LePen, systematically encourage boos and catcalls at her meetings when Jewish-sounding names are mentioned? Madonna, from this point of view, was perfectly right to make the connection, in Tel Aviv, with Nazism.

Is it due to a coincidence of dates that we learn, the same week, thanks to a collective of anti-racist organizations that have brought the matter to the courts, that France is one of the rare countries where, when you type in a proper name on a Web search engine, one of the first semi-automatic data entries supposedly “suggested” by the algorithm (but in reality prescribed by the totality of searches by preceding users) is the association of the name with “Jew”?

And what can one say of this strange obsession with Israel that, for the past several years, has tended to become the alpha and the omega, the central pawn, the main beam of an ideological construction that is at once insane and monstrously effective, according to which “the Jews” are accused anew: an abstract Israel, an imaginary Israel, a demonized if not downright Nazified Israel that serves, by association, to demonize and to Nazify Jews in general — an Israel whose function is, in a word, to furnish a brand-new fuel for the old anti-Semitic machine? For there lies the heart of the problem.

It is there among all those who, Muslim or not, imagine they are avenging the “victims of Israel” when they attack someone wearing a kippa.

It exists among the supposed “Palestinian sympathizers” who don’t give a tinker’s dam for the fate of those in the West Bank or Gaza when the Arab “brothers” are the ones keeping them in subjection or massacring them — and then suddenly see them as the salt of the earth when they confront Israel and Israel, in return, fights against them.

It is in this double standard whereby the same “friends of humanity” remain dry-eyed before the fate of the children massacred at Houla, in Syria, and find nothing to say about Bashar al-Assad’s savage pounding of his cities with heavy weapons, even regretting that a dictator like Muammar Gaddafi, who had the deaths of tens of thousands of Arab innocents on his conscience, was stopped from doing further harm — but when it is Israel that strikes (that is to say, precisely, when Israel defends itself and, in a manner more or less proportionate, hence more or less open to criticism, retaliates when it has been fired upon) judge that the ensuing fatalities are so many crimes against humanity, the blood of which will fall upon the heads of all the Jews in the world.

Listen to them! Israel, as they tell it, would be a state that is fundamentally illegitimate. Consequently, its leaders’ policies would be essentially criminal. And its friends and allies, as still another consequence, would be accomplices in this crime of principle. That is, more than ever, the formula for the anti-Semitism of the future. Such is the theorem that is equal to a license to kill or, as it happens, to beat, in the eyes of the descendants of the Nazi Jew bashers of the ’30s, whose argument had become unspeakable. Such is the modern manual of hatred that, having transformed the Jews into just so many potential assassins, has made it possible to condemn them or strike them.

Denounce this manual, deconstruct it, demonstrate that its protocols are no less fearsome than those of ancient times; this is the urgent matter the drama of Villeurbanne compels us to address. And that is the reason why it would be crazy to underestimate its meaning and its influence.

Florida’s Stand Your Ground Defense More Likely To Succeed If Victim Is Black: Study

A newspaper report has found that the Stand Your Ground self-defense statute in Florida is more likely to succeed when the victim is black.

The Tampa Bay Times looked at 200 cases and found that in instances in which the victim was black, the person who invoked the defense went free 73 percent of the time. If the victim was white, the person walked free 59 percent of the time. The report also found that more than two thirds of all the people who invoked the law were acquitted, and that the defense is being invoked in more and more cases.

“People often go free under ‘stand your ground’ in cases that seem to make a mockery of what lawmakers intended,” wrote the Times reporters. “One man killed two unarmed people and walked out of jail. Another shot a man as he lay on the ground. Others went free after shooting their victims in the back. In nearly a third of the cases the Times analyzed, defendants initiated the fight, shot an unarmed person or pursued their victim — and still went free.”

The reporters acknowledged that there is no comprehensive data on “stand your ground” decisions, since police departments and prosecutors often don’t indicate why they chose not to arrest or press charges against someone.

The state’s law justifies the use of force if ” it is presumed to have held a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another.”

Stand your ground laws — and Florida’s in particular — have come in for particular scrutiny in the wake of the killing of Trayvon Martin in February. The unarmed 17-year-old was shot in Sanford, Fla., as he returned from a convenience store to the house where his father was staying. His shooter, George Zimmerman, told a police dispatcher that Martin looked suspicious, and he shot Martin in the altercation that followed. The case has become a flashpoint in the national debates over racial profiling and gun control.

A majority of Floridians still support the law, according to a Quinnipiac poll from last month. Seventy-eight percent of Republicans surveyed support Stand Your Ground, compared to only 58 percent of Independents and 32 percent of Democrats.

Many of the stand your ground laws around the country were sponsored by the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, a conservative lobbying group that has come under fire in the aftermath of the Martin shooting. Several large corporations who contributed to ALEC, including Wal-Mart, Coca-Cola and Kraft, have severed ties with the organization in recent months.

Good morning!

I’ve given the title of Wonderful Woman of The World to Jennifer Siebel Newsom before, for her efforts to eradicate sexism. I’ve blogged about “Miss Representation“, her film that exposes how American youth are being sold the concept that women and girls’ value lies in their youth, beauty and sexuality. The film had its broadcast premiere on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network in October of 2011.

I’m blogging about Newsom again today because of my passion to support and empower women, and because even more so lately with all of the efforts to limit and control women, enslave women, etc., I feel that anything that helps inspire and empower women, needs to be in our faces as much as possible, so that we as a society will take the necessary actions for a shift to take place in our society.

Awhile ago I joined Newsom in her efforts by signing up for her weekly e-mails and inspirations on how to be a voice in our community. I’ve taken the pledge to use my voice to spread the message of Miss Representation and challenge the media’s limiting portrayal of women and girls. It is rampant in our society and I know many of you, my readers, feel the same as I do: We want it to stop. But wanting it is not enough.

Today, I want to encourage you to do the same, and take the pledge. I’ve made it easy: Click here. For those of you who may not want to take the pledge for whatever reason,  but still want to support women and girls, I’m posting a list, thanks to Miss Representation, of things that you can do, steps that you can take to amplify the voices of women and girls everywhere, motivate men and boys to stand up to sexism, and shift our culture towards equality:

Watch the film…or even better, host a screening.  And then:

1. Tell 5 people about the film and share one thing you learned from watching it.

2. Parents- watch TV and films with your children.  Raise questions like “What if that character had been a girl instead?”

3. Remember your actions influence others. Mothers, aunts and loved ones- don’t downgrade or judge yourself by your looks. Fathers, uncles and loved ones—treat women around you with respect.  Remember children in your life are watching and learning from you.

4. Use your consumer power. Stop buying tabloid magazines and watching shows that degrade women. Go see movies that are written and directed by women (especially on opening weekend to boost the box office ratings). Avoid products that resort to sexism in their advertising.

5. Mentor others! It’s as easy as taking a young woman to lunch. Start by having open and honest conversations with a young person in your life.

Chagas Disease, an incurable infection, called the ‘new AIDS of the Americas’: report 

Is this the disease that killed Charles Darwin?

Chagas disease is a parasitic infection transmitted by blood-sucking insects, largely in impovershed areas

Experts have dubbed it the “new AIDS of the Americas.”

A parasitic infection called Chagas Disease has similarities to the early spread of HIV, according to research published recently in the journal PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Like AIDS, Chagas is hard to detect and has a long incubation period before symptoms emerge, the study said, according to the New York Times.

As many as 8 million people are infected in the Western Hemisphere, mainly in Bolivia, Mexico, Colombia and Central America, as well as some 30,000 people in the U.S., the newspaper reported. Chagas infects people in areas of poverty, and most U.S. cases are found in immigrants.

Because Chagas is often left untreated, it spreads easily, either genetically or through blood transfusion. If caught early, it can be treated with intense medication, but the drugs are scarce in poor countries and very little money is invested in searching for new treatments, the paper said.

Chagas is usually transmitted from the bite of blood-sucking insects that release a parasite called Trypanosoma cruzi into the victim’s bloodstream. The parasite can eventually make its way to the heart, where it can live and multiply.

Infections often stay dormant for years, and then emerge as heart arrhythmias and heart failure. About a quarter of victims develop enlarged heart or intestines that can lead to sudden death if they burst, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

New research suggests Chagas may have led to the death of Charles Darwin — one of the great medical mysteries.

Researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine believe Darwin suffered from three different illnesses, including a Chagas infection contracted on a voyage to the Andes in South America, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month.

Darwin wrote in his diary that he was bitten by a “great wingless black bug” during the trip in 1835. He died 47 years later of heart failure.

Many hot topics from yesterday’s post. I think I’ll leave Romney, Trump, and the face-eating alien alone for now. Although I have to say: JH-1: Hilarious!  

Today I want to focus on a topic that Henrietta brought up, (thank you!) as well as change.org, (And thanks to you!) because I just can’t believe that this happened to this girl. I say EVERYONE, go to change.org and support this girl – click on the link and donate if you can.

Diane Tran, Honor Student At Texas High School, Jailed For Missing School

Diane Tran, a 17-year-old honor student in Texas, was forced to spend the night in jail last week after missing too many classes, KHOU-11′s Sherry Williams reports.

The Willis High School junior, who helps support two siblings, has both a full time and part-time job. She said that she’s often too tired to go to school.

“She goes from job to job from school,” Devin Hill, one of Tran’s classmates, told KHOU-11. “She stays up until 7:00 in the morning doing her homework.”

In an interview with KHOU-11, Tran said she takes AP Spanish, college level algebra and dual credit English and history courses. Her parents divorced and no longer live near her, so she lives with the family that owns the wedding venue where she works on weekends.

According to Texas law, if a student has ten or more unexcused absences within a six-month period, the school district may refer the student to a juvenile court. “In such cases, resolution of the issue is entirely in the hands of the court,” reads a statement on the website of the Willis Independent School District.

After being warned by a judge in April about missing too much school, Tran was arrested in court on Wednesday and required to spend the night in jail, according to the above video from KHOU-11. She has also been fined $100.

Tran’s case has spread online, with dozens of news outlets across the country picking up her story. HelpDianeTran.com, a site set up by the Louisiana Children’s Education Alliance in partnership with Anedot and Gatorworks, has raised over $28,000.

A petition at Change.org that calls for the judge to revoke the teen’s fine and sentencing was approaching 26,000 signatures on Monday afternoon.

“This remarkable young woman doesn’t deserve jail,” wrote a Change.org commenter going by Letitia Gutierrez. “She deserves a medal.”

Williams, the KHOU-11 reporter, visited the judge who sent Tran to jail. Watch the video above to hear the judge’s reasoning behind the punishment.
