Donna, Chancy, Janet: I too was surprised about Obama’s choice of Hagel, and began questioning. But before we start judging him, have a little faith that he knows what he is doing, has a good reason for doing it, and he won’t let go of the rights already in place for women and LGBT’s in the military.

Mike, TM, et al: Thanks for all of the additional info on lead poisoning. I really had no idea. The affects are certainly disturbing not to mention the little coverage it has gotten in the media. Perhaps now with the recent killings and the write from Harris-Perry and others, this will get more attention and make it onto the front pages. But yes, with repubs leading the house, it’s going to take some dedicated passionate people to make some headway.

Oh, just read that soda drinks are linked to higher depression. Hmm…Lead + Children + Soda = Higher depression and aggression. Not exactly a recipe for love.

Hey…with all this talk about death & destruction, depression and aggression, I thought I would throw this in today and end with Life – Something  beautiful to be seen.

Human birth observed in real-time open magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVE:

Knowledge about the mechanism of labor is based on assumptions and radiographic studies performed decades ago. The goal of this study was to describe the relationship between the fetus and the pelvis as the fetus travels through the birth canal, using an open magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner.

STUDY DESIGN:

The design of the study used a real-time MRI series during delivery of the fetal head.

RESULTS:

Delivery occurred by progressive head extension. However, extension was a very late movement that was observed when the occiput was in close contact with the inferior margin of the symphysis pubis, occurring simultaneously with gliding downward of the fetal head.

CONCLUSION:

This observational study shows, for the first time, that birth can be analyzed with real-time MRI. MRI technology allows assessment of maternal and fetal anatomy during labor and delivery.

Good morning!

I so enjoyed reading all of your “6 words”…many of them were so creative, and others deeply preceptive, and still others disgustingly honest, and beautifully truthful. Thank you all for participating by sharing.

Lately, I’ve been feeling like I have been fighting with life. Like everyone, I’ve got lots going on in my life, and these past few days have been especially challenging for me personally, hence I wasn’t feeling very friendly and accepting with things in my life. Growth and challenges go hand in hand, and sometimes we all need a little inspiration.  When I am in need, I reach for one of my “bibles”, and for the past 4 or 5 years, it has been Eckhart Tolle’s “A New Earth“, which I’ve written about several times here.

It’s been awhile so I picked up my “bible” a few nights ago and started reading a section that always puts me back where I need to be…”In love with my life”, or at least ‘in like’ with it.” And just like when you get a new car or hear a new song, you start seeing that new car everywhere, and hear that song on every station, while perusing the net, I came across this article written by Oprah, a huge fan of Tolle.

It’s rare these days that I post something personal like I used to do when I first stated blogging. But today I thought perhaps, like myself, some of my readers might need a little inspiration for new year year…

What I Wish I Knew At 21

Wow. Have you ever looked at an old picture and been instantly transported back in time — to the point where you can feel the fabric of the shirt you were wearing, and smell the room you were standing in?

That’s what this photo [below] does for me. I was 21 years old. I had bought the entire outfit off a mannequin at Cain-Sloan in Nashville. (Never was a bargain shopper. To this day, going through racks of clothes looking for a find makes me anxious.) The skirt cost $40. I’d never spent that much on a single item of clothing.

But I was willing to do it for my first major celebrity interview: Jesse Jackson. He was speaking at a local high school, telling students, “Down with dope, up with hope!” and I had been assigned to cover him. My news director didn’t think the event was worth our time, but I’d insisted (okay, pleaded), assuring him I could come back with a piece worthy of the 6 o’clock news. And I did.

I had a fondness for telling other people’s stories, extracting the truth of their experience into a digestible nugget that could inform, inspire, or benefit someone else. Still, I was uncertain about what to say or how to say it. The truth is, I was just moving on instinct.

If I knew then what I know now, I would never have wasted even a single minute doubting my path. It may be human nature to question and doubt, but the older I get, the less I worry about anything. I can see life unfolding in divine order. And even in times of the greatest turmoil, I can stop, get still, and see with utter clarity: This, too, shall pass.

Because everything always does. Until finally we do.

No matter what you’re struggling through — no matter the pain or anguish — you can go inside behind your mind and observe it happening to you. Whatever it is, it isn’t you. You are the observer.

When you come to know this, you realize that even though the canvas of your life is painted with daily experiences, behaviors, reactions, and emotions, you’re the one controlling the brush.

What a wonder! It would have been nice to know this at 21. I could have saved myself a lot of heartache and self-doubt. But to fully understand, at any age, that you are the artist of your own life — and can use as many colors and textures as possible (and erase when necessary!)… now, that’s a revelation.

Good morning!

Like you I’m sure, the Sandy Hook victims have been slipping into my mind throughout my days. This atrocity is so devastating, it is one that hangs around. And rightly so. If we have any humanity in our hearts, we shouldn’t be able to so easily let something like this pass without being deeply disturbed.

And like many of you, I watch the news and read HOPEing that the ripple of this horrible morning will inspire us…people…our governments to do something…pass a gun law, and not just a state law but a federal law, that will truly prevent something like this from ever happening again.

While reading I found this write. Sometimes in the midst of monstrous pain and loss, there is a small shining light that emerges.

Sandy Hook School Girl Plays Dead, Survives Elementary Shooting; Pastor Jim Solomon Recounts Story (VIDEO)

When little children play “let’s pretend,” the stakes should never be so high.

When killer Adam Lanza brought terror to Sandy Hook Elementary school, one 6-year-old girl had the wit to play dead and save herself from the horrific fate of her classmates.

Local pastor Jim Solomon, who spoke to the first grader after Friday’s mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., recounted the story to ABC News. Of 16 children in the classroom, the unidentified girl was the only survivor.

“She ran out of the school building covered from head to toe with blood and the first thing she said to her mom was, ‘Mommy, I’m OK but all my friends are dead,’” Solomon said. “Somehow in that moment, by God’s grace, she was able to act as she was already deceased.”

The girl was reportedly the first student to flee the building after the massacre at the school, which left 20 children, six adults and the gunman dead.

Solomon told ABC News that the girl and her parents are doing “as well as you can expect them to” after the heartbreaking incident.

The first two of 20 children whose lives were taken will be buried today.

Sandy Hook Elementary School remains closed, and police believe it will take more than a month before they turn the school grounds back over to the district. The investigation into Lanza – who carried an arsenal of guns and ammunition as he acted out his gruesome and suicidal mission — is ongoing.

Few of us come face-to-face with death in such a clear and present way as Ric Elias, who was on board Flight 1549 when it crash-landed on New York’s Hudson River four years ago. Ric (the CEO of Red Ventures) and everyone on board, expected to die on impact. And when the now famous Captain Sully safely landed the plane, Ric was given a new lease on life, and also a new perspective on it.

The days between Thanksgiving and the New Year are always a time for reflection: On what’s been accomplished, on what remains ahead of us, and — most importantly — what matters most.- June Cohen

Ric’s TEDTalk has proven so compelling because he answers the question so many of us have: When my life draws to a close, will I look back with regret? Or satisfaction? What will I wish I had done? What will matter most? It’s a gift, in some ways, to come so close to death, because it teaches us something essential about how to live. And this is a theme that many TED speakers have explored… What can we learn from near-death choices? Artists and athletes, gamers and monks have all tackled this question from different angles…

TED Fellow Candy Chang creates public art installations that explore the hidden landscape of near-death choices. Her work asks the audience, chalkboard-style, to fill in the blanks: “Before I die, I want to ________________” Their answers have been, in turn: hilarious, heart-breaking, raw, real.

Former Olympian Janine Shepherd had to rethink her answer to that question when a crippling accident ended her cycling career. In her TEDTalk, “A Broken Body Isn’t a Broken Person,” she recounts the challenge of facing a life where her dreams were no longer within reach. Instead of crumbling, she found new ones…

Jane McGonigal began her 2012 talk “The Game That Can Give You 10 Extra Years of Life” by listing the five regrets of the dying: “Number one: I wish I hadn’t worked so hard. Number two: I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. Number three: I wish I had let myself be happier. Number four: I wish I’d had the courage to express my true self. And number five: I wish I’d lived a life true to my dreams, instead of what others expected of me.”

Then she makes a fascinating leap to a little-known phenomenon called post-traumatic growth. We’ve all heard of post-traumatic stress. But sometimes, when people are faced with a deeply traumatic experience — illness, accident, or another brush with death — they walk away not diminished, but super-charged by the experience. Suddenly, they can live a life without fear, focused on what matters most to them. And Jane’s talk teaches the rest of us how we can experience this super-growth, without the trauma.

And Louie Schwartzberg’s beautiful talk on gratitude challenges us to live each day as if it were our first and our last. He shares a recording of the Benedictine monk Brother David Steindl-Rast, which begins: “You think this is just another day in your life. It’s not just another day. It’s the one day that was given to you. Today. It’s given to you. It’s a gift. It’s theonly gift you have right now. And the only appropriate response is gratefulness.”

Well, I guess yesterday’s post really excited everyone. The comments were just rollin’ in. :) So, maybe today’s will be a little bit sexier, and if that doesn’t get you going, then I guess it is one of those days. Those of you who have been around for at least a few years will get my drift. :)

So..wha’at’s up? 

I’m not sure if this is a sexy subject but it caught my eye this morning. I am a fan of “Through The Wormhole“, and just read about a recent show that speaks of the soul…what happens to it after we die?

Like I said before, if you’ve been here for at least a few years, then you’ve read comments from the aliens as well as the Earthling Girlz – remember when those girlz used to blog in? It seems after their earth bodies were no longer, their essence…their soul, carried on quite well in another form. Believe it?

This is what scientists have to say about the soul:

What happens when human beings die? Is there a final destination for the soul? These were the questions discussed among four scientists on a video that recently aired on “Through the Wormhole” hosted by Morgan Freeman on the Sciencechannel.

A number of scientists who have studied consciousness and near-death experiences extensively believe they are close to solving the puzzle, but they vehemently disagree with each other about the solution.

Christof Koch, the Chief Scientific Officer of the Allen Institute of Brain Science and Lois and Victor Troendle Professor of Cognitive and Behavioral Biology at California Institute of Technology, argued that the soul dies and everything is lost when human beings lose consciousness. “You lose everything. The world does not exist anymore for you. Your friends don’t exist anymore. You don’t exist. Everything is lost,” he said.

Bruce Greyson, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia, challenged Koch’s view of consciousness. He said that, “if you take these near death experiences at face value, then they suggest that the mind or the consciousness seems to function without the physical body.”

Stuart Hameroff, who proposed the highly controversial Orch-OR (orchestrated objective reduction) theory of consciousness in 1996 along with Roger Penrose, told the Science channel, “I think the quantum approach to consciousness can, in principle, explain why we’re here and what our purpose is, and also the possibility of life after death, reincarnation and persistence of consciousness after our bodies give up.”

Finally, Eben Alexander who wrote the widely circulated and criticized cover story forNewsweek, ‘Proof of Heaven‘, said, “I have great belief and knowledge that there is a wonderful existence for our souls outside of this earthly realm and that is our true reality, and we all find that out when we live this earth.”
