What is a Politician doing in the Doctor’s office?

Posted by michellemoquin on 1st July 2008

The woman’s right to choose is back on my agenda today. Are you familiar with  the abortion law in South Dakota? Thanks to the signature of Gov. Mike Rounds, the bill would make it a crime for doctors to perform an abortion unless the procedure was necessary to save the woman’s life. It would make no exception for cases of rape or incest. Hmm..let’s see, could it be as Adam pointed out a few days ago that this is because ‘women are inherently a distraction or impediment to the accomplishments of man…’ Oh so of course it is her fault for getting raped, therefore…sorry, you have to have the child. This makes me ill.  I see many women saying, ‘Fuck that.’ and crossing over the state line. What if crossing the line wasn’t a solution?

When The Governor signed this bill in 2006, he expected the law would be tied up in court for years and the law would therefore not take effect unless South Dakota state got the case to the US Supreme Court and won. This is promising because the Legislature expects the law to give the Supreme Court an opportunity to overturn Roe, making an abortion ban constitutional.  It would take 5 justices to overturn Roe. Remember Madaline’s STR? (Scalia, Thomas and Roberts – the trio of crooks she mentioned in a few blogs back) Scalia and Thomas have clearly indicated that they would vote to overturn Roe, and abortion opponents have high hopes that fellow conservatives Roberts and Alito will join them.

I agree with Madaline.  The Supreme Court should be represented by at least 5 women. Where were the voices of the American women when all of these men got appointed? Including myself? – I am to blame too. I have to be honest, and this is no excuse, but my head was in the sand when it came to this and other important issues that could now have a lasting effect on the livelihood of myself and women in this country.

So what’s next? Now, they are inching their way even further to make an abortion ban constitutional and one way they are going about it is by preying on those getting the abortions by STRessing them out through an emotional guilt trip in the process. How are they doing this? Now the ‘Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals has lifted a preliminary injunction against a South Dakota law that requires doctors to tell women seeking abortions that the procedure ends a human life, deciding that the law is likely constitutional.’  What if a doctor doesn’t believe that an abortion ends a human life?  To me this is all about legislating a religious belief, not about legislating a fact.  Who decides when life begins and when it becomes a human?  For everyone it is different. This isn’t about providing factual information to the patient; it’s about pushing ideologies.  This places politicians between women and their doctors. For it to be a law that doctors must tell their patients this, that they must read ideological language to women seeking abortions is completely mindless not to mention totally bias. This violates the doctors free speech rights by enforcing them to say something that they may not believe.  And just as bad, they intend to put a guilt trip on the woman for doing it by preying on her vulnerable emotions.  This is what the Doctors are now required to say to these women:

‘The abortion will terminate the life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being.’  And…they must also say that they have a right to continue a pregnancy and that abortion may cause women psychological harm, including thoughts of suicide.’  Can you believe this? Who says this is a whole, separate, unique, living human being?  Fine if you believe that but don’t put an emotional guilt trip on someone who doesn’t, and don’t make it a law for a doctor to have to tell what he may not believe.   And why not present the other side? What about women who have a child and have thoughts of suicide? Those women exist too.  Oh yeah, to STR there is no other side. The court has given South Dakota doctors 21 days to start complying with the law.

I know many of us live in California and we could never imagine something like this happening in our own liberal state, but we must look at what is happening in our own country and not get complacent in our own little worlds. Our rights are being taken away, chipped away on a daily basis. It is not enough to tell our daughters; we must show action too and be exemplary in our behavior.

For me, my strongest passion has always been to protect the animals and the environment, for they are the voiceless.  But I have come to realize that unless I as a woman am considered an equal to a man, my voice as a woman will mean nothing….My presence a mere distraction and my actions something to tolerate.  I can’t let that happen.

Readers: In regards to women becoming equal to man, Adam and Madaline gave some good suggestions yesterday – How will you speak up now?

If you want to take action I am listing a few websites below that I know about.  If you have any others that you want to share please post them – thanks.

Center for Reproductive Rights

Feminist Majority Foundation

Planned Parenthood

Never miss a good chance to shut up

Posted by michellemoquin on 30th June 2008

Good morning(?)

I am dragging myself out of bed this morning.  It was a helluva night with crazy dreams of my good friend Tom Bailey , who passed a way some time ago, and a childhood friend Rigzin, that I have known since I was seven, that I don’t really talk to anymore. Throw in the fact that our smoke alarm in the hallway was beeping, ‘I need a new battery’, every god only knows how long, that woke me up every time.  Doug was his typical, sleep through everything state, while I tried to find Zen.  I did and I want to share it with you. It is about all I can contribute this morning to my blog as my eyes are barely open and my mind is thoughtless – yes! The key to a quiet mind is to get so damn tired, your mind goes on vacation.

So…here it is from my good friend Maharishi:

I hope that your Monday started off a lot better than mine.  I’m off for a good strong chai and something rich and totally fattening to stuff in my mouth.

Hey ZL: Did you like the above? -made me think of you. :)

Hi Adam:  I do want to continue with our conversation but this morning I feel totally incapable and incapacitated – sorry it is not going to be the day for me to respond. Please feel free to add any more delightful tidbits about dear Heracles if you choose.

Okay, this is my chance to shut up, so I will – See ya all MAÑANA!

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle  ?

Do I own things or do things own me?

Posted by michellemoquin on 14th June 2008

http://www.pixelmarx.com/2007/09/03/credit-crunch-on-middle-american-dreams/

I woke up this morning and I began to take an inventory of the ‘things’ that we own and the money still owned on them, and I realized, not really for the first time, that we are working, constantly working to pay for ‘things’.  It muddles up my mind and I realized, not for the first time either, that the things that we do not pay cash for, the things that go on our credit….in reality we really don’t own.  And every month, these little things, some of them very big things, like house mortgages, cars, etc, all take a little bite out of me as we write that check, every month dwindling down the balance and some times not. If we do not write that check or we are late making a payment, a little piece of our credit is taken away. Our things own us.

I remember before we owned a house and we were just renting, our used cars all paid for, the only real concern we had was a few simple bills. Easy.  Life was easier.  We may have not been able to buy many things, but we owed what we had and if we couldn’t afford it, we just didn’t buy it or do it. Before we invested in things for our future, life was easier. We dropped everything in a months notice, subleased our flat, paid a few bills a head of time, and travelled the world for 4 months without a care in the world. Now to me that was living.

Who ever said the American dream was owning a house?  Who said accumulating materialistic things meant one was successful? It’s a bunch of crap. Yeah, it is if one can buy it with straight up cash,  then you truly own it. But debt is the American way and almost the only way to establish credit is to owe money on things, and consistently make the ‘payments’, and ‘on time’ let me remind you. We bought into the American dream. Our things own us. This is not living. And quite frankly I am sick of it.

There are plenty of homeless people in this town and every once in awhile I look at one and I think, ‘This person only needs to be concerned about his or her survival: food, water and shelter.  That’s it…the basic needs. Most likely, they have no bills, no house payment, not credit cards, no job to earn money to pay all of the debt that is owed…just the clothes on their back, some food and water in their gut and a warm place to rest. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to be homeless.  I am sure it is not an easy life, but it is the simplicity that I crave. I want the basics needs too. I have them, and I am grateful for them; I just want them under different circumstances.  I love my things, but I want to own them not pay on them, or I don’t want them anymore. I want to own my things and not have my things own me.  Now that is living…that is freedom….truly the American dream

Readers:  How do you feel about your ‘things’?

Saturday morning post

Posted by michellemoquin on 5th April 2008

Good morning everyone!

I woke up this morning and my entire blog was changed; not the visual that you see but the inner workings of setting this thing up.  The layout is a bit different so later on I am going to have to reacquaint myself.  No matter….on with the day!

Doug had a biz meeting last night so I jumped around with a girlfriend Tara and her beau Paul, our newbie friends.  Actually yesterday was a pretty social day all around…. I have been getting up at 6:30 every morning which is new for me.  Between blogging and emails and eating breakfast early, it is a great way for me to jump start my day and get the little stuff out of the way. Not that blogging is little stuff and not that I want to get it out of the way. I just know that you my readers look forward to a new read early in the morning, especially during the work week so that you can hang and coffee clutch n’ cluck  in the break room or near the water cooler.  I’m not making this up – you’ve emailed me requesting this! :)

So…my girlfriend Juls, whom I haven’t seen in about 3 years, came over in the afternoon – it was like we had just spoken yesterday. I just love when that happens.  It just goes to show you that when you have a connection with someone, time and space really doesn’t matter.  Hmmm… I just now realized that I need to remember that one in regards to another person.  Anywho, we gabbed non-stop for two and an half hours drinking tea and catching up on life.  We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and promised to get together sooner this next time.

Juls left just in time to watch Oprah.  Did any of you catch the show? I bet it was eye-opening for some of you.  I could never imagine having the job of choosing which dogs to euthanize – how terrible and even more so when they showed that one kennel where 40 dogs are euthanized everyday! It weighs so heavy on my heart.  My mom and I talked about this and the hardest part was not only knowing that so many dogs are put to death every year but that they seem to know from the look on their faces that it is their time to go. :(  I hope that all of you will reconsider when you are out looking for a dog – adopt and older one.  Our last Dog Vince was 10 years old when we adopted him.  Unfortunately he only lasted 2 years but I know it was a wonderful two years for him – He was extremely attached to me and he despised Doug!  But Doug was much more of a sport about it than I could ever have been -  Thanks baby for not taking his snarling personally :)

So back to last night….Tara picked me up and we headed to Le Cheval, this fab Vietnamese place in DT Oakland,  to meet Paul for a bite to eat before we headed to Oakland’s Art Murmur. Prudy, another friend had blogged about it months ago and until last night we hadn’t gone yet.

The murmur happens the first Friday of every month, 6-10 pm and features 17 galleries in a few blocks range. If you live in the Bay Area, it is a must – very cool vibe and some interesting artwork, especially at the Johansson Projects Gallery.  The gallery spaces are a bit crowded so seeing the art can be difficult but half of the fun is all of the people watching, and there were lots of people just hanging out in the streets. In fact we ran into about 8 or so of Tara and Paul’s friends – all super friendly.

There was one street between two galleries that was blocked off and vendors sold a few things ranging from fresh made vegan donuts ( umm sounds good but they weren’t), to patches of fabric printed with art to sew onto a t-shirt (?).  Kind of burning man’ish with street dancers, art video splashed on an entire side of a building and a graffiti artist doin’ his latest installation on an outside gallery wall.  Lot of action and lots to see.  Tara mentioned that there was a booth last time where these people would cut up knit sweaters and plunk each piece on top of your head sewing them together, making you a personalized hat within 5 or so minutes! – cool. Unfortunately they were not there last night. Have any of you gone to the art murmur? I would love to hear your rap.

We finished off an early evening with a drink at a local bar and I was home by eleven. A perfect evening – except for the fact that I Missed you Doug.

******************

Doug and Al:  Thanks for your kind comments yesterday. If we all just do a little bit more for the things that are close to our hearts how can things not get better?

Daphne: Just caught your comment the other day.  I know you are a big fan of Steve – so am I.  I liked the article that he wrote.  I agree with some of it, and some I have to think about some more. The only paragraph that I know I don’t agree with is:

“The irony is that those who suggest we must dissociate from the ego are still very much ego-associated themselves. They simply detach their egos from materialism and re-attach it to spiritualism. The identification with physical life becomes stronger than ever.”

My feeling is I don’t think that if you detach from the materialistic that you then attach to the spiritualism. I think for some and maybe many, this will happen. But if you truly detach, all that is left is simply: being; I am.  I have been working on this detachment of ego and just trying to be present; to create the space to be the awareness behind the ego. It is not always easy as we fall into the different roles that we play in our lives – our identities that we are attached to. There is nothing wrong with having roles as long as there is no attachment to the identity, so that being can just shine. I just keep thinking of “A New Earth” – have you looked at this book at all?  I think you would find it very interesting.

That’s it for today….have a splendid Saturday!

Gratefully your blog host,

Michelle
