“Occupy Oakland”: General Strike TODAY

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 2nd November 2011

Good morning!

“Occupy Your Town” is country wide. No surprise that “Occupy Oakland” is a huge player. Love that the passion for change is in my own backyard. So…today is the day.  ”Occupy Oakland” wants to shut down the city of Oakland with a citywide general strike. The proposed strike intends to close all banks and corporations for the day, while calling on laborers, teachers and students to join in en masse.

liberate_oakland.jpg

Oaklanders: Are you going to be there? If you plan on participating, there are some things you should know:

How YOU can Participate in the General Strike!

WAYS TO PARTICIPATE ON NOVEMBER 2 GENERAL STRIKE & DAY OF ACTION
called for by Occupy Oakland

Occupy Oakland is calling for no work and no school on November 2 as part of the general strike. We are asking that all workers go on strike, call in sick, take a vacation day or simply walk off the job with their co-workers. We are also asking that all students walk out of school and join workers and community members in downtown Oakland. All banks and large corporations must close down for the day or demonstrators will march on them.

The Occupy Oakland Strike Assembly has vowed to picket and or occupy any business or school which disciplines employees or students in any way for participating in the Nov 2 General Strike. Please email OccupyOaklandLaborSolidarity@gmail.com if you are the subject of any disciplinary action.

Occupy Oakland recognizes that not all workers, students and community members will feel able to strike all day long on November 2, and we welcome any form of participation which they feel is appropriate. We urge them to join us before or after work or during their lunch hours.

Below are some action ideas for strike participants to consider:

Gather in Downtown Oakland to help Shut Down the City

  • Join the Mass Gatherings at 14th & Broadway 9:00am, 12:00pm, 5:00pm. Strike Rallies will be held at these times with political speakers as well as time for open mic so that everyone can make their voices heard. There will also be action announcements made from the stage on this intersection for those who are interested in participating in pickets and shut downs of banks and large corporations.
  • Lead a march from your neighborhood, workplace, school, community center, place of worship etc into downtown Oakland to join one of these three mass gatherings. Have fun and be loud along the way to let people know why you are marching downtown!
  • Form a mobile blockade or flying picket that can take over important intersections in downtown with street parties and other creative ways to make our voices heard and shut the city down.
  • There will be numerous pickets and actions at banks and corporations across downtown but we need more! Get a group of friends, family members, co-workers or fellow students together to form an affinity group and make your voice heard and your presence felt at any of these locations in downtown. Let the stage on 14th & Broadway know about your action so they can announce it to the crowd.
  • There are many other autonomous actions planned for the day that will be occurring throughout downtown. One of them is the anti-capitalist march at 2pm meeting at the intersection of Telegraph & Broadway and another is the Feminist & Queer bloc against capitalism that will meet at 4:30 at 14th & Broadway.
  • Join the marches from downtown to shut down the Port of Oakland. These marches will be leaving at 4pm and another will be leaving at 5pm for the 2 mile march out to the port to stand in solidarity with the longshore workers and shut down the evening shift of the port.
  • Join the 4pm Critical Mass ride from 14th & Broadway out to the Port to join the shut down
  • Best not to drive into downtown: It is likely that many streets will be blocked to traffic so please bike or take public transportation if possible. It will also be useful to have a bicycle to move between actions or to march to the port.

Take Action in Your Own Neighborhoods and Communities

  • Gather neighbors, co-workers, or fellow students together and organize group walks and small marches around the neighborhood to have fun, raise awareness and encourage others to join you in the streets! Bring noise makers, signs, banners and let your community know why your are participating in the strike.
  • Stop at banks, large businesses, chain stores, gas stations, corporate headquarters, large commercial media outlets, etc. to protest and picket
  • Gather in neighborhood centers and on the corners of main intersections to hold speak outs, BBQs and street parties – make your voice heard and raise awareness by reclaiming space where fellow community members can join you and talk about the issues that affect them most and how we can organize together to build a powerful movement
  • If you must shop, only spend money at locally owned stores and as much as possible purchase locally-produced goods

Nonprofit and Community Organizations

  • Use your personal and organizational social media accounts (websites, facebook, linked-in, electronic newsletters, etc) to support the actions and keep your constituencies updated about what is going on in the streets of Oakland.
  • In the event of police violence, use your organization to denounce police repression and call for the release of all arrested strikers.
  • Provide resources for your staff to participate: allow time away to participate in direct actions; encourage work on projects aligned with general strike and occupy goals, host sign and banner making parties!

Be Prepared

  • Bring materials to make signs: Banner material. cardboard, poster paper, markers, paint, spray paint tape, dowels, etc
  • Bring food and water to share!
  • Bring noise makers, instruments, sound systems and other ways that we can transform downtown into a celebration of our collective power
  • Write this legal number down on your body in case of arrest: 415.285.1011 The number will be staffed al day long and will coordinate legal support for those arrested in the strike.
  • Remember these four common points that the General Strike Assembly has agreed upon:
  1. Solidarity with the world-wide Occupy movement!
  2. End police attacks on our communities!
  3. Defend Oakland schools and libraries!
  4. Against an economic system built on colonialism, inequality and corporate power that perpetuates all forms of oppression and the destruction of the environment!

A Few Chants For the Strike

  • “Strike, Occupy, Shut it Down! Oakland is the People’s Town”
  • “Every Hour, Every Day! The occupation is here to stay!”
  • “Occupy Everything! Liberate Oakland”
  • “Politicians & Bankers, Liars & Thieves, We’re taking it back! We’re not saying please!”
  • “No more cops, we don’t need ‘em! All we want is total freedom”
  • “Shut Down OPD! Not the Public Library!”
  • “Let’s Go Oakland! Let’s Go!” [clap] [clap]

SEE YOU IN THE STREETS! MAKE OAKLAND PROUD!

Let’s make it safe and peaceful for all – Okay?

AH: As someone once said, “History doesn’t repeat itself, people do”.

Play it peaceful wherever you are. xoxo

Edmund Morris on Obama’s Choices For Summer Reading

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 30th August 2011

Good morning!

While listening to NPR the other day, it seems that the republikkkan pundits are dissing Obama for his summer vacation reading choices. So what else is new? What won’t the republikkkans dis Obama for – they knock him for everything else he does, why not knock him for this?

Here’s an interview with Brook Gladstone from NPR’s “On The Media” talking with Edmund Morris (Comments from McCain and Huntsman are interjected)):

BROOKE GLADSTONE:

And that brings us neatly to our next story.  Every summer the White House releases what the President will be reading on his vacation. Usually the lists are full of weighty tomes of political theory or history. President Bush’s 2006 summer reading list of 13 books included biographies of Abraham Lincoln, a history of polio, Camus’ The Stranger and Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Earlier this week the White House released President Obama’s summer reading. Of the five books cited, four were fiction. This has set off grumbling amongst some Republican pundits, saying that by reading fiction Obama looked like a political lightweight. Tevi Troy, writing in The National Review Online said that, quote, “The near absence of nonfiction sends the wrong message for any president because it sets him up for the charge that he is out of touch with reality.

Theodore Roosevelt is often invoked by Republicans as a paragon of firmly grounded pragmatic participation on the public stage.

JOHN McCAIN:

[APPLAUSE]

I know that many of you have noticed it’s not my style to simply phone it in.

BROOKE GLADSTONE:

John McCain said, “I believe our leaders belong in the arena.”

JOHN McCAIN:
I’m a Teddy Roosevelt Republican.

BROOKE GLADSTONE:

Jon Huntsman said, I’m a center right candidate:

JON HUNTSMAN:

I think I’ve got pragmatic and practical solutions. If you’ll step up and do what Teddy Roosevelt would have advocated, get in the arena, it says something about you.

BROOKE GLADSTONE:

But even while Teddy Roosevelt himself was in the arena, he was reading everything, from science to history to fiction to poetry. We called Edmund Morris, author of The Rise Of Theodore Roosevelt,Theodore Rex and Colonel Roosevelt, to ask him about the reading habits of the 26th President.

EDMUND MORRIS:

Well, when you talk about these rather pathetic little lists that presidents feel they have to announce every summer, there’s a list that TR was asked to compile by the president of Columbia University in 1903, and TR’s list extends for three closely printed pages [BROOKE LAUGHS] of collected letters.

He write that he’d read parts of Herodotus, all of Polybius, a little of Plutarch, Sophocles’ Seven Against Thebes, Euripides’ Hippolytus and Bacchae. Later on we’ve got Carlysle, we’ve got a whole raft of something like half a page of novels, including all of Walter Scott. He was reading, by the way, in German and Italian and French, as well as in English. He was omnivorous.

He read on average a book a day. That’s not an exaggeration; it’s documented. Sometimes he read three books a day.

BROOKE GLADSTONE:

But, obviously, if he’s spending his time reading Walter Scott, I mean, he must have been a very lightweight president. And, in fact, he can’t have been engaged in anything serious on the public stage.

EDMUND MORRIS:

Well, I can’t think of anything more irritating than the claim that to read fiction is to be lightweight. On the contrary, I think somebody who reads nothing but political books and books on contemporary affairs, which is the average diet of all these political drones who have been criticizing President Obama, I think they are lightweights.

A man who can read good poetry and good fiction is by nature a, a rounded man and a man with a rich mind.

*********

Readers: This is a good place to end the article. I agree with Morris. And how interesting McCain, and Huntsman applaud Teddy Roosevelt, yet he read everything; not just non-fiction, like Obama.

If you’re interested click here, to can read the rest of the interview, which mainly addresses TR, and his reading habits.

Blog me.

Twitter Tips For Beginners

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 10th May 2011

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

Social media has been on the rise for a while now. Are you with it? Are you a member of FaceBook? Do you tweet? Some of my readers have asked me about the “tweet” in the upper right hand corner of my daily posts. So if you’re questioning, what is “Twitter” and how do I “tweet”, here’s something that might just get you going and up to date in the social media realm:

Quick Twitter Tips: A Twitter Guide For Beginners

Twitter can be an intimidating jumble of # symbols, RTs, DMs, @’s, and other code-like shorthand to a Twitter newbie.

To help get the hang of it, we’ve put together a Twitter guide for Twitter beginners with nine tips for how to communicate on Twitter, make sense of it, and make the most of it.

Tricks and tips aside, some users suggest the best thing a new tweeter can do is just start sharing. “Just jump in and start engaging (for lack of better cliche word) – and not just with people you know,” suggested @Agrinavich@BrunuM suggested Twitter newbies should just “tweet tweet tweet tweet tweet tweet and tweet.”

Have other Twitter tips you’d like to share? Click “Add a slide” or “Send a tip” below to share them with us.

What other Twitter tips do you have? Share them with us and we’ll post them on HuffPostTech!

Learn The Lingo

The various Twitter shorthand–from DMs and RTs to #’s–can be puzzling to Twitter newbies.

Here’s the basic terminology you need to know:

“RT” stands for “retweet,” in which a user shares another tweeter’s post, verbatim, while crediting the original tweeter. A retweet appears as “RT @[username]” followed by the tweet.

A “DM” is a direct message–a message up to 140 characters in length that is sent only to another specific user, not to all of a user’s Twitter followers. (A “DM fail” describes direct messages that were supposed to be private, but that were accidentally shared with all of a tweeter’s followers.)

A hashtag is created by using the # symbol ahead of a word or term. As Twitterexplains, a hashtag “is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages.” Hashtags might be used to add color or personality to a tweet (like “#fail”) or it could be used to tie a tweet to a specific, broader topic (“#Jan25″). Some use hashtags to track all tweets from a specific event (i.e. “#SXSW”)

Tweet Pictures

Want to share a snapshot of a concert? A screenshot? Or any other sort of media? Twitter enables you to share images (and videos) in tweets by embedding the media as links.

One option is to use third-party image sharing services like Twitpic, Twitgoo, TweetPhoto, Yfrog, and Picktor, which allow you to upload photos or videos, then generate a link to the media (i.e. http://twitpic.com/31vyum) and will send a tweet to your account with that link. Users can also use these services, as well as others like Posterous and Mobypicture, to email or SMS photos and text, then have this information appear as tweets.

Twitter’s mobile apps, such as Twitter for iPhone and Twitter’s Android app, also include photo sharing abilities, allowing users to embed links to photos in their tweets.

Use URL Shorteners And Track Your Stats

Given Twitter’s length limit, each character in a tweet is key. Rather than tweeting unwieldy URLs–which can run 120 characters in length–condense your URLs with a URL shortener before you tweet them.

Services like bit.ly, goo.gl, and is.gd will “compress that address” (See the fastest URL shorteners here). URL shorteners will also display stats on how frequently and over what period of time your link has been clicked. To take advantage of this feature using bit.ly, for example, enter the shortened URL followed by a plus sign to check on the stats (i.e. “http://huff.to/fhlo5M+”)

Hashtags: Use Them, But Don’t Abuse Them

Hashtags (such as “#SXSW” or “#Facebook”) offer a way to “tag” tweets to a particular event, topic, trend, or location, or as a way of adding color or personality to a tweet.

Hashtags can help your tweet get attention and traction–for example, some users might track all tweets from “#TED”–because, as Twitter explains, “if Tweet with a hashtag on a public account, anyone who does a search for that hashtag may find your Tweet.”

However, it’s possible to include too many hashtags, which can turn some users off of retweeting (or even reading) a tweet. Three hashtags is generally the maximum number recommended per tweet.

Keep It Short

Sometimes, you really do need all 140 characters to get your point across in a tweet. But other times, it’s worth thinking about how you can keep your tweets a bit pithier, as there can be a downside to using all of your allotted characters: maxing out the 140 character limit makes it harder for other users to retweet your posts, as their retweet will add at several extra characters to the post–RT @yourtwittername. When you tweet, think about leaving som extra room (around 20 characters) to make your post more share-able. Alternately, if you are tweeting several 140 character posts in a row that are all part of a single thought o theme, alert your followers that the tweets are part of a series by including “1/3″ or “2/3″ in the tweet.

Twitter Lists

It can be overwhelming at times to follow the firehose of tweets coming from the varied sources you follow, from friends to politicians, brands to pundits.

Instead of having to absorb a wide range of tweets from the perhaps hundreds of tweeters you follow, users can use Twitter Lists to better organize the content that is shared and zero-in on a particular topic. Twitterers can create their own lists, or follow lists other people have created of tweeps tweeting about everything from Apple news to the unrest in Egypt. For example, for the latest tech news, you might follow HuffPostTech’s “tech journalists” list, or tune in to TIME’s “funny people” list for a laugh.

@ Replies

Want to respond directly to someone’s tweet? Start a conversation on Twitter with an “@ reply” directed at the tweeter you’re replying to.

To send an @ reply, start your tweet with “@username.” For example, if @HuffPostTech posed a question on Twitter about people’s first smartphones, a user could tweet back “@HuffPostTech my first phone was an iPhone.” Note: @ replies will not be viewed by all of your followers. A tweet that begins @username is only visible to a subsection of tweeters. As Twitter explains, “People will only see others’ replies in their home timeline if they are following both the sender and recipient of the update.

@ Mentions

Let other Twitter users know you’re tweeting to them or about them by including users’ Twitter usernames in your tweets. For example, instead of saying “Going to dinner with my friend Bianca,” you might tweet “Going to dinner with my friend @bbosker.”

Mentioning another account by its Twitter username can help that account gain followers–others can see that user’s tweets and profile with just a click–and can also help you get other people’s attention on Twitter.

Many tweeters monitor their @ mentions to see what others are saying to them or about them, and in turn people use @ mentions to communicate with brands, media outlets, individuals, and other accounts. You can see your @mentions by clicking the “@mentions” tab on your homepage on Twitter.

Stay Organized With Third-Party Twitter Clients

Rather than go to Twitter.com to track what’s happening on Twitter, there are a host of third-party Twitter applications that can help you to better monitor–and tweet from–various accounts, as well as keep track of various social media platforms all in one place. Tweetdeck, Seesmic, and Hootsuite are just a few of the options.

Peace out.

Tribal Baroque

Good morning!

Doug and I went to a party last night in Mill Valley, in an old church remodeled into an artist’s abode/studio. We witnessed a very interesting dual between two performers who at first seemed very opposing, until they started performing, and then…they melded as if they were meant to be.

He, Thoth, dark-skinned, tribal like in his appearance, while she  Lila ‘Angelique, pale-skinned, dressed all in white, shimmering in silver and feathers. Together they both share the love of violin and opera.

And when they come together in union, it is a beautiful haunting of times past, a romantic worldly divineness that evokes not only the ethereal goddess in me, but stirs a passion in the very raw.

The dichotomy…was breathtaking. The result, is Tribal Baroque.

Here is a little taste of what the dual does. However to see them live is a treat one should not miss. For my local readers, you can see Tribal Baroque in Golden Gate Park today near the Conservatory of Flowers. Everyone else, check out their website.

Enjoy.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

Gratefully your blog host,

Women’s History Month

Good morning!

Women’s History Month is celebrated every year in the United States in March.  Like Black History Month, many of us question, “Why only a month?”. Women should be honored and revered every day. And not just in the U.S. but throughout the entire world.

I try to do that here as often as I can. Bring women to the forefront of our minds, whether it be the wonderful women in the world that touch our lives, or to enlighten the out of touch, with respect to the plight of women on our planet.

Which is so much of the reason why I blog about women in a variety of ways. To celebrate them in their strength and support, their love and loyalty …and to reveal them in their most vulnerable states, so that those who would rather turn their heads and look the other way, are confronted with the realities that women face and endure on a daily basis, and will HOPEfully be inspired to do something.

I began this month last Saturday honoring the Princess, whoever and where ever She may be. And what better way to honor women, but to honor the Princess, who is the life source to all that we know.

Today I will recognize the women of Guam.

This is for you Anna, Lea and all of the girls in Guam: I HOPE the annual art show this year is a tremendous success for the women of Guam.

Women unite this week to celebrate femininity. Handmade dolls, twisted pots and abstract paintings adorn the Infiniti Art Gallery in its biggest weeklong event of the year — the 6th annual Women’s Art Show. This year’s theme is “The Women of Guam.”

The show started six years ago as a way to help women in the community and celebrate Women’s History Month. The event was so successful it became an annual event, says Ron Castro, marketing manager of Nissan Motor Corporation in Guam.

Georgette Conception of the Soroptimist International of Guam says this is the perfect opportunity to celebrate women in the arts.

“Our group is all about promoting women’s best interests, and that’s why we’re apart of the art show,” Conception says.

The show opened Friday night in the 4,000-square-foot gallery, and will continue until Friday.

“This is really a special event. More than 300 people always attend the opening night party,” Castro says.

Much of the art will be available for purchase.

What’s new

This year the exhibit holds artwork of every medium by professionals and hobbyists.

“The female artists gather and support each other. No one’s art is better. We all just have different styles. I’m known for my crooked paintings and that’s just my style,” says artist Mary Camacho.

This year will have some veterans in the art community as well as fresh faces.

“There are a lot of new artists this year, which is exciting. And artists who have participated before will be showing new work,” Castro says.

For Camacho, the show symbolizes how far women have come in society.

“For the longest time, there was a stigma that women were limited in our abilities. Reality is we’re just as good and great as anybody, and this art show proves that,” Camacho says.

She’s also proven that through her art and more than 20 years with the U.S. Army.

This is her fourth year exhibiting in the show, this time displaying her “Coco posts,” postcards made from coconut.

“I like to utilize what’s available on island. It helps promote the local culture, and since it’s also Chamorro Month it all just fits together,” she says.

Her specialties also include wood carving.

Girl power

Various nonprofit groups also are participating, including female youth organization Island Girl Power. The art show is the perfect opportunity to showcase the group and what it does, empower young women.

“We participate because it’s important for our young ladies to be aware and observe Women’s History Month,” says Program Director Juanita Blaz.

The organization’s contribution is always a group project by girls in the program. This year it will be a poetic collage.

“Some of the girls partnered up to create a poem. Each young girl wrote a poem about one of the other girls. Then they grouped them together to be displayed as a whole,” Blaz says.

The project is unique, promoting empowerment. The girls were inspired to look at the positive aspects of each other when writing their poems.

“It deters them from being negative and teaches them to think that way in everyday life,” Blaz says.

“Women are not the minority. We are just as capable, that’s why it’s rather important for women to both participate in the show and attend the show,” Camacho says.

Being surrounded by strong females at the art show also gives the girls a taste of life as a strong adult woman.

“They get to meet the other artists, some who are professionals, and they connect with these women that become role models to them,” Blaz says.

Jng:  I would never for a moment think that the activities of Roi or the TAO towards the cattle on this planet would carry any weight with you. I was speaking of his assistance to help other beings (those below the surface and from other planets/galaxies) He is one who stands alone and yet risks his life for others when they odds are against him.

Thinking logically, if Roi would risk his life for others why would he not risk his life to find the Princess, knowing the She is the answer to the continuation of the Universe? Why would Roi or the TAO attempt to deceive you or anyone for that matter, when it is in their best interest as well to find the whereabouts of the Princess?

I am aware that an anomaly is happening in the Universe, and no one knows the cause. Natural laws that have been taken for granted or proven to the useful tools of calculation or analysis have broken down. Perhaps because the Universe is in a state of flux currently, the luck in finding the Princess is putting many on edge, and you are just looking to each other for reason that She can not be found.

Perhaps you are just looking for someone to blame. And since Roi has been here on Earth, he is the one you choose to blame. I can see from your comments and your response to me that you are so self-involved, you can hear nothing but your own reasoning. Still…I’m going to try, and HOPE that you come to your senses and release him.

Ghadah: Thank you for writing in for Konduz. I don’t know what will happen. There is so much destruction going on there right now. Be strong, stay safe, and follow Madaline’s advice.

Hi Al: I too an concerned for the women in the Middle East. Between what is happening here and the flux of the Universe, we are certainly at a stage of random chaos. I HOPE you are well.

W63453e: Thank you for answering my question. A very different meaning than what was noted on the website. I like the true meaning and symbolism much better that you shared.  I enjoyed the visual you gave of “wet skis in the clouds” although I somehow doubt my vision is anything like the actual. Nice to hear from you.

    Peace out.
