2014 WILL Be A Turning Point For Women

Good morning!

I like the positive tone to my title better…but hey, MSNBC wrote the write, not me.

Women in Politics

Nancy Pelosi

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif., front row, center, poses with other female House members on the steps of the House on Capitol Hill in Washington, Jan. 3, 2013, prior to the official opening of the 113th Congress.

2014: A turning point for women in politics?

By Irin Carmon

“Our young women are forming a new era in female history,” wrote Massachusetts feminist Judith Sargent Murray excitedly. “The Rights of Women begin to be understood; we seem, at length, determined to do justice.” The year was 1798. It would be two hundred and fourteen years until her home state would elect its first female senator, Elizabeth Warren. This year, it might get its first elected female governor, likely Democratic nominee Martha Coakley.

In other words, when it comes to women in public life, the triumphalism has occasionally been premature.  Progress has been too often followed by backlash. The first time we heard “The Year of the Woman,” in 1992, the number of the women in the House and Senate grew exponentially–followed by a flattening when Republicans took over two years later.  Even after last year’s record-breaking election, the one that elected Warren and brought the number of women in the Senate to an unprecedented 20, the United States still ranks 79th in the world in female representation. (That well behind Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh, to name two.) The numbers are even bleaker when you look for women who aren’t white.

But America is moving forward. There were those twenty Senate women of 2012, including the first out lesbian Senator in Tammy Baldwin; the first Asian-American female Senator, Mazie Hirono; and Claire McCaskill, who prevailed over Todd “legitimate rape” Akin. In 2013, Janet Yellen became the first female chair of the Federal Reserve. Meanwhile, Republicans have been hastily trying to show America that, in the immortal words of Ann Romney at the last Republican National Convention, “I love you, women!”

And 2014 offers even more reason for conditional optimism. Some of the most consequential Senate races of 2014, particularly if you’re rooting for Democrats to keep the Senate, have women at the center: Allison Lundergan Grimes, seeking to topple Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell; Michelle Nunn, raising Democratic hopes in red Georgia; the potential loss of the long Democratic hold on a West Virginia Senate seat, with two women on either side of the aisle running. Two defenders, Senators Mary Landrieu and Kay Hagan, are also pivotal. While Republicans currently have the advantage on female governors, New Hampshire’s Maggie Hassan, the sole female Democratic governor, might be joined by the women running in Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

And maybe, just maybe, in Texas, where Wendy Davis is running for governor along with lieutenant governor candidate Leticia van de Putte. Conventional wisdom has it that they are too liberal, that Davis is too tarred by the “Abortion Barbie” moniker, that they are running too soon for Texas’s coming demographic shift– especially in an era of barely-restrained voter suppression. But conventional wisdom has been wrong before.

On the night Texas Republicans sandbagged Davis’s historic filibuster of an omnibus abortion bill, van de Putte, who had just left her father’s funeral, struggled to be heard. “At what point,” she asked, “must a female senator raise her hand or her voice to be recognized over her male colleagues?”

This year, as Davis and van de Putte try to turn Texas blue together, that point may come. We’ll be there.

*****

Readers: As much as I added a positive tone to the title – I have faith – the question does deserve an answer. And my answer is, “Yes, as long as the repubs don’t get in the driver’s seat. Otherwise, women won’t be the only ones who are screwed.” 2014 midterms…here we come.

Howie: Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. But of course like many things that we learn, the questions that we ask and are answered, usually inspire more questions. :) However, I will just ask one. You had mentioned that if the TWO were in danger they could combine their strengths. At one time I believe that you(?) told us that the male has his powers and does not know he is one of the TWO, and the female knows she is one of the TWO but does not know how to use her powers yet. Is that correct?

Also, hard not to agree with your sentiments about the Wopre. Thank you for clarifying that the Universe will shrink and life will cease to exist, if not for the TWO getting comfy with each other. I guess it goes without saying that the death of both (if even possible) would give us the same results. It would also seem that their stupid act of bravado by attempting to find and destroy the TWO would warrant aggression toward them from many other Aliens.

Peace out.

Collaboration Of Imagination

Good morning!

The Landfill Harmonic

Favio Chavez, Recycled Orchestra's Director

Feeling powerless to help others? A single selfless act is all it takes to make music out of misery.

The source of inspiration can often be found in the most unlikely place. One of those unlikely places is a landfill in the slums of Cateura, Paraguay.

In 2009, a documentary filmmaking crew stumbled upon a local garbage picker who was making instruments from items found in a landfill. Nicolás Gómez, who goes by Cola, made flutes out of pipes and cellos from tin cans and meat tenderizers.

A community like Cateura is not a place to have a violin,” said Favio Chávez, director of the Recycled Orchestra. “In fact, a violin is worth more than a house here.”

Favio Chávez, a music instructor, started teaching the local children how to play classical music on these recycled instruments. From there, the Recycled Orchestra was born.

This collaboration of imagination and ingenuity gave the children of Cateura, a place where misery is high and opportunity is low, hope for a better life. “The world sends us garbage,” Chávez says. “We send back music.”

Chávez and his youth orchestra are now receiving invitations to play concerts all across the globe and plans are already underway for a world tour. With the Landfill Harmonic documentary trailer spreading through social media, the Recycled Orchestra is inspiring millions by showing how far the power of music and hope can take you when you have nowhere to go but up.

Watch it:

Readers: Simply wonderful yes? It is amazing to me how someone can make something incredible out of what most of us would consider nothing more than junk. I am continually blown away by people who can create the extraordinary out of the ordinary…who can see the possibilities that no one else can…and more importantly, they follow their vision, and they have a profound positive affect on people’s lives.

Big kudos of congrats goes to Nicolás Gómez for his vision and talent in making these instruments,  and to Favio Chávez, the music instructor, for bringing this Orchestra to life.

Blog me and let me know if you have seen The Landfill Harmonic play.

On a side note, I was sent this write by a resource of mine. The funny thing is, I discovered this fun and inspiring piece of news also in a new magazine that was sent to me. I love this magazine. It is called Live Happy.

If you haven’t picked up a copy you might just want to buy a subscription for yourself and one for a few friends. (Disclaimer: no I am not getting anything from saying this – I just like the idea of it) There is a happiness movement that has been going on and it is gaining speed. This magazine focuses on living life with a more positive attitude…choosing happiness, and watch how your happiness becomes contagious and ripples into other people’s lives.

That is it in a simple nutshell but in my opinion it is much more. No doubt I will be blogging more about this in the new year.

Happy Saturday everyone!

Peace & Love to you.

Wonderful Women Of The World

Good morning!

Miss Israel, Linor Abargil, was abducted and raped in Italy, weeks before she won the title of Miss World back in 1998. Now she’s on a global campaign to end sexual violence. Through her recent documentary, Brave Miss World, Abargil tells her horrific story and illuminates the stories of so many other women who have been raped, who have stayed silent, and are now ready to speak.

As much as it is so hard to hear stories of rape and know that rape culture continues, I am always moved by the women who don’t allow their rapists to silence them, but use their voices to encourage and support other women who are afraid to speak of their own horrifying rape. It is the women in our loves who are going to support us most when these sicks acts of violence interrupts the natural course of womens’ lives and changes them in ways that they never could imagine.

For some women, it changes them and gives them the strength to speak out. For others, it changes them in ways that makes them feel ashamed, so they stash the horrible memory away to never ever be spoken about. There is no way anyone can know how a woman is going to be affected by being raped.

So when I read of a woman who knew that her purpose in life was revealed to her when she was crowned Miss World, weeks after she was raped, I celebrate  her for her strength to take on her life and be a voice for the millions of women where rape has left them with no voice. I congratulate her for encouraging women to come out of their shell, speak of the violence, and for empowering them to take charge of their lives again.

It is women such as Abargil, that are such an inspiration to other women…such a source of strength for other women to feel safe and supported, so that they too can find their voices.

Yes, for Linor Abargil, the title ”Miss World” has truly a greater, significant meaning. She is most definitely a Wonderful Woman of the World.

Former Miss World empowering rape victims by sharing her own story

The documentary Brave Miss World tells the story of former Miss World 1998 Linor Abargil who was abducted and raped seven weeks before her win, and her mission to empower fellow sexual assault survivors to share their stories and to stand up against sexual violence.

Determined to change the stigma of rape victims, she travels the globe to meet with survivors from South Africa to Princeton, N.J. Hollywood stars like Joan Collins and Fran Descher open up to Abargil about their rapes.

The film shows how Abargil transformed from an 18-year-old pageant queen to a lawyer and advocate. In the documentary, Abargil also returns to Milan, Italy, the scene of the crime, to find the prosecutor who worked with Israeli authorities to arrest her rapist.

Working with director Cecilia Peck, daughter of the Oscar-winning actor Gregory Peck, Abargil sheds light on the trauma and stigma of rape culture by sharing her story with the world and by reaching out to other victims of sexual violence.

Good morning!

Three Republicans Who Opposed Sandy Relief Now Demand Disaster Aid For Arizona

Really?! No…they wouldn’t deny help for those in need and then demand for help when they need it, would they?! Of course they would and they did. Now that the disaster is in their back yard affecting them and theirs, of course they are asking for relief. Would we expect anything different from repubs who only think of them and theirs?

Here’s the write from my fave lately…Think Progress:

Arizona Republicans Sen. Jeff Flake, Sen. John McCain, and Rep. Paul Gosar all voted against emergency relief funding after SuperStorm Sandy ravaged much of the New Jersey and New York area earlier this year. Now, following an Arizona wildfire, the same trio is vocally complaining that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is not doing enough to aid their state.

In light of sequestration and budget tightening, FEMA has limited funding and cannot respond to every single flood, fire, and other issue that hits. Last week, the agency announced that it would not declare Yarnell, Arizona, a federal disaster area. A spokesman explained that while the agency had assisted firefighters during the deadly June blaze, “the damage to uninsured private residences from this event was not beyond the response and recovery capabilities of the state/local governments, and voluntary agencies.”

McCain and Flake, who had partnered to ask for a federal disaster declaration, issued a joint statement Monday, lamenting that it was “a shame that FEMA couldn’t find it within their mission to help rebuild their homes and lives.” A riled McCain added that in light of the 19 firefighter deaths and the 134 destroyed homes, “the damage that was done was very substantial and, I believe, qualified. So, we’re going to do everything we can to urge the president to change his mind. Including, I will be making some phone calls.”

Gosar, who had also requested an emergency designation, released a statement of his own, saying, “The people of Yarnell do not ask much from the federal government,” but that here it was “reasonable to expect FEMA to step in.”

In January, the Senate passed a long-delayed $50.5 billion Sandy relief package, but among the 36 Senators voting against the bill were Flake and McCain. McCain criticized provisions in the bill that might not be spent immediately as “questionable” and argued “we cannot justify this type of spending.”

When the House gave its approval to the supplemental spending package, Gosar was among 180 Representatives voting no. At that time, he explained, “I am more than willing to support the people and businesses impacted by Hurricane Sandy, but that would not take over $50 billion taxpayer dollars.” But Gosar even voted against a barebones $9 billion funding increase for FEMA for Sandy relief — one of just 67 members to do so.

Gosar, a climate change denier, has blamed “extreme environmental groups” for Arizona’s many wildfires.

Social Butterfly: I’ve missed you. Thanks for the sweet words. xoxox back to you.

Before I end let me say Congratulations Miss Nina Davuluri, the first Indian American woman to win Miss America! Yes, there were some sick racist tweets but what else can you expect from the many racists out there. I wish I could say that I was surprised, but sadly, I am not. However, I am putting aside the racist remarks of her well-deserved win and focusing on her talents and inspiration that I’m sure she will express as she travels and speaks around the country.

As Huff Post says, “She is the right woman for the right time.” I agree.

Readers: Thoughts on this or anything else you want to chat about…blog me.

Bodin is the newest minifigure from LEGO. She and others were rolled out this week as part of the company’s Minifigure Series 11. And while that may seem like an unremarkable event — she’s just a fictional figure meant for kids, after all — the creation of Bodin is actually something to be celebrated: She is the first-ever female scientist in the company’s 81-year history.

LEGO hasn’t always been a model of gender equality. The company has often marketed itself exclusively to boys. It also got itself into hot waterearlier this year after one father discovered a sticker of a male LEGO construction worker sticker with a speech bubble reading “Hey Babe!”

Last year, the company pledged to “Deliver Meaningful Play Experiences to Girls Worldwide.” The new figurines, however, turned out to be different than standard legos. And, as Maia Weinstock at Scientific American points out, they were also pink and frilly.

With Professor Bodin, though, it seems LEGO is finally living up to that promise.

But why should it matter if there’s one female scientist in LEGO’s collection? Well, Weinstock reports, “the ratio of all-time minifigure models is roughly 4:1 in favor of males. And the female characters LEGO has produced are often laden with stereotypes. A quick glance at some typical female minifig torsos suggests that girls/women are predominantly into pink, hearts, and excess skin.”

The toy world’s ratios and stereotypes are played out in real life: Women only make up 24 percent (PDF) of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) jobs, despite making up nearly half of the workforce.

And it matters that girls see figurines who represent what they might become. There’s evidence that reinforcing gender stereotypes can be formative to how a little girl or boy views him or herself. Numerousstudies show that girls lack confidence in mathematics if their parents enforce gender stereotypes around the subject.

Readers: Well it’s about time. Yay to Professor Bodin for shattering the plastic ceiling! I just heard of “STEM” for the first time tonight when I read a write on the importance of Silicon Valley taking the lead in attracting women  in tech. And then I stumbled upon this write googling something completely different. Hmmm…I think it was a sign that I needed to post this…so I did.

Let’s HOPE that Bodin will help inspire young girls to take an interest in these kinds of fields. We certainly could use more intelligent girls taking the opportunity to do some great things in these areas. Yes…I’m really looking forward to seeing the females of this planet take the lead. How about you?
