Wonderful Women Of The World

Good morning!

Miss Israel, Linor Abargil, was abducted and raped in Italy, weeks before she won the title of Miss World back in 1998. Now she’s on a global campaign to end sexual violence. Through her recent documentary, Brave Miss World, Abargil tells her horrific story and illuminates the stories of so many other women who have been raped, who have stayed silent, and are now ready to speak.

As much as it is so hard to hear stories of rape and know that rape culture continues, I am always moved by the women who don’t allow their rapists to silence them, but use their voices to encourage and support other women who are afraid to speak of their own horrifying rape. It is the women in our loves who are going to support us most when these sicks acts of violence interrupts the natural course of womens’ lives and changes them in ways that they never could imagine.

For some women, it changes them and gives them the strength to speak out. For others, it changes them in ways that makes them feel ashamed, so they stash the horrible memory away to never ever be spoken about. There is no way anyone can know how a woman is going to be affected by being raped.

So when I read of a woman who knew that her purpose in life was revealed to her when she was crowned Miss World, weeks after she was raped, I celebrate  her for her strength to take on her life and be a voice for the millions of women where rape has left them with no voice. I congratulate her for encouraging women to come out of their shell, speak of the violence, and for empowering them to take charge of their lives again.

It is women such as Abargil, that are such an inspiration to other women…such a source of strength for other women to feel safe and supported, so that they too can find their voices.

Yes, for Linor Abargil, the title ”Miss World” has truly a greater, significant meaning. She is most definitely a Wonderful Woman of the World.

Former Miss World empowering rape victims by sharing her own story

The documentary Brave Miss World tells the story of former Miss World 1998 Linor Abargil who was abducted and raped seven weeks before her win, and her mission to empower fellow sexual assault survivors to share their stories and to stand up against sexual violence.

Determined to change the stigma of rape victims, she travels the globe to meet with survivors from South Africa to Princeton, N.J. Hollywood stars like Joan Collins and Fran Descher open up to Abargil about their rapes.

The film shows how Abargil transformed from an 18-year-old pageant queen to a lawyer and advocate. In the documentary, Abargil also returns to Milan, Italy, the scene of the crime, to find the prosecutor who worked with Israeli authorities to arrest her rapist.

Working with director Cecilia Peck, daughter of the Oscar-winning actor Gregory Peck, Abargil sheds light on the trauma and stigma of rape culture by sharing her story with the world and by reaching out to other victims of sexual violence.

Michelle, I couldn’t get in yesterday to tell you that you are an Angel for featuring this story.

  3. Stanz Says:

The rapist’s name is Shlomo Nur. He is a serial rapist. He raped my sister too. She admitted it after reading this article. I will kill him when he gets paroled.

  4. Danielle Says:

The creep always got away with it because he always claimed that the girls seduced him. Justice in Italy is like the stuff I read about in America. The men who are the judges are too willing to accept the word of the man.

  5. Milo Says:

Stanz, His real name is Uri Shlomo. And you will have to get in line.

  6. Dag Says:

Stanz he was sentenced to 16 years in 1999 and has been trying every year for parole since. His name on the prison sheet is Uri Shlomo.

  7. Marianne Says:

I worked with the justice system to get him charged with attempted murder since he tried to kill her by stabbing her after he had tied her up, taped her mouth shut and raped her twice.

But the inept Italian police over here are shameful with the way they handle cases and especially the way they investigate rapes.

  8. Amy Says:

Dag, you are wrong he has been asking for parole about every 6 months. He was lucky that the negligence of the italian police forced the court to drop the attempted murder charge.

  9. Troy Says:

We are waiting for his release. He is due to get out in july of 2014.

  11. Umeo Says:

Many girls who go to the Teddy Bear Clinic in Soweto, South Africa have been raped by men who have HIV and AIDS. They rape little girls because they are told that if they spread the disease to her they will be cured.

  12. Rona Says:

Please read Alison Botha’s book “I Have Life.” It is about her rape experience. I read it and it convinced me to turn in my biological father who raped me.

  13. Herba Says:

Linor Abargil got a lot of inspiration from Alison Botha, she was one of the first women to come out and testify publicly about being raped in my part of the world.

  14. Ele Says:

ALISON BOTHA: I had just parked my car outside my house. I just arrived home.

LINOR ABARGIL: Oh, inside your house?

ALISON BOTHA: Yeah, I didn’t have a garage, so I had to park on the street, so they just opened my door.

    LINOR ABARGIL: Oh.

ALISON BOTHA: They had a knife. They put the knife up to my throat and said to me, “Move over, or else we’ll kill you.” They took me out to like a bushy remote area just outside the city.

    LINOR ABARGIL: With your car.

ALISON BOTHA: Yeah, with my car. There was no one to shout for for help. I just thought, don’t make them upset. And I just put my hands on the ceiling of the car, so I didn’t have to touch them. And I tried, while they both raped me, to think of other things. Like, what do you say? I remember just saying to them, “Please don’t kill me.”

    LINOR ABARGIL: Yeah.

ALISON BOTHA: And he just said, “Sorry.” They dragged me out of the car and stabbed me in my abdomen about 35, 36 times.

    LINOR ABARGIL: Oh, my god!

ALISON BOTHA: While that was happening—I think it must have just been a reflex reaction—my leg kind of gave a twitch, and he read that as I was still alive. So he took his knife, and he cut my throat. I remember even hearing one of them say to the other, “Is she dead?” And the other one said, “No one can live through that.” And then they got in—

    LINOR ABARGIL: Wow.

ALISON BOTHA: They got in my car and drove off. What happened, they had cut my neck, amazingly missing the jugular vein here by less than millimeters, but they cut this muscle. And when I stood up, without this muscle, I couldn’t control my head, and my head flopped right back onto my back.

I just kind of put my hand to the back my head, and I literally held my head on and everything else in. I don’t know how long it took me. I don’t know how many times I fell. I don’t remember most of that journey, but yeah, made it to the road.

  15. Gloria Says:

How about the Delta Kappa Epsilon members, a men’s greek club at Yale University. They’re chanting in areas on campus where freshman women live.

DELTA KAPPA EPSILON MEMBERS: No means yes! Yes means anal! No means yes! Yes means anal!

  16. Sharia Says:

This one really made me angry.

MORGAN: I went to the DA. It was the first time I met with her, and I went in. She sat down, and she said that she thought that he was cute. And she tried to convince me that I had just had a weak moment and that it was my fault.

  17. Kelly Says:

Michelle, some of their stories are just horrible.

DEBRA: He got one year in jail.

    LINOR ABARGIL: Oh, my god.

DEBRA: And I never understood that, because he had done it to me for nine years and did it to two of my friends, did it to his own daughter. It’s so unfair that he’s out there, probably still doing it.

  18. Marianne Says:

I read that Kelly, I just want to add this about Debra. Debra was raped by her stepfather, by her mother’s husband from the age of four to 14 years old. And like so many kids who are victims of domestic abuse, who are frightened to say anything or intimidated or made to feel complicit in it, she kept quiet for all those years.

And when she finally was able to report it to someone at the hospital, her mother disowned her. She gave her up as a ward of the state, because she was in denial and wanted to save her marriage over her daughter. And Debra has never spoken about it before, but we met her through a friend.
