Sanitized Edition Of ‘Huckleberry Finn’ Causes Uproar

by LARRY ABRAMSON

January 5, 2011

The English professor who proposed a new edition of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn — without the offensive “n” word — says there’s an obsession with the word that makes teachers and students uncomfortable, and stops many schools from using the book in classrooms. Critics say removing the racial slur amounts to censorship and fails to acknowledge America’s racist past.

MICHELE NORRIS, host:

From NPR News, it’s ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. I’m Michele Norris.

Mark Twain’s “Huckleberry Finn” has become one of the most banned books in history, in part because of its frequent use of the N-word.

Now one Twain scholar has come up with a solution: use a different word. He hoped the new edition of “Huck Finn” would calm the controversy, but as NPR’s Larry Abramson reports, it has just created more.

LARRY ABRAMSON: English professor Alan Gribben of Auburn University in Alabama says he came up with this idea while he was on a lecture tour trying to encourage schools to teach Twain.

Professor ALAN GRIBBEN (English Professor, Auburn University): Teachers would come up to me afterwards and say oh, I would love to use your remarks. I would love to get these books into my curriculum, but it’s just not possible. The parents are so uncomfortable with them these days.

ABRAMSON: Because of the use of the N-word more than 200 times in “Huck Finn.” So for Gribben, this was a way to revive these books in the schools. Instead of the N-word, this alternative version refers to slaves. Here’s what the new book would sound like, read by NPR producer Jim Wildman.

JIM WILDMAN: Slaves would come from all around there and give Jim anything they had just for a site of that five-center piece. But they wouldn’t touch it because the devil had had his hands on it.

ABRAMSON: Professor Alan Gribben says this is just an experiment to get past a word that has become such an emotional tripwire, a word that NPR reporters also avoid using on the air.

But Gribben says instead of being hailed for resuscitating a banned book, he’s gotten slammed.

Prof. GRIBBEN: Just an avalanche of very, very vitriolic emails.

Mr. KAI WRIGHT (Editorial Director, ColorLines.com): I compared it to abstinence-only education for race.

ABRAMSON: Kai Wright attacked the update at ColorLines.com, where he is editorial director. Wright says the revision actually shortchanges schoolchildren because it skirts the lessons they need to learn.

Mr. WRIGHT: What does it mean both for society then, and what does it mean for society now? That’s the kind of thing for a teacher to deal with. You can’t really talk about race without talking about the ugly parts.

ABRAMSON: Perhaps Gribben should have known there would be a small rebellion when he laid his hands on “Huck Finn,” which Hemingway called the best book we’ve had. All American writing comes from that.

Barbara Jones of the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom says what Gribben has done is an act of censorship, which the ALA opposes.

Ms. BARBARA JONES (Office of Intellectual Freedom, American Library Association): To remove a word from a book is just a real insult to the author’s wanting to, in this case, express how people spoke in that part of Missouri in the 19th century.

ABRAMSON: The new editions were originally intended for a limited print run of about 7,500 copies, directed mostly at schools and libraries. Of course, it’s possible the outrage of the blogosphere will spark more sales.

Professor Alan Gribben is undeterred by all the criticism. He says those emails have just demonstrated how much we need this book. He says even though they all argued for leaving the N-word in “Huckleberry Finn,” none would use the word itself.

Larry Abramson, NPR News.

His Left Hand Has Been Busy

Posted by michellemoquin on 5th January 2011

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

And before you go dirty on me, I’m talking about Obama’s left hand – the one that holds his pen. :)

Today the Republicans officially take control of the House.

Obama’s approval ratings have gone up to 50%, the highest it has been since June.

Don’t even think for a minute that it has anything to do with the Repubs. The two previous statements are not related. Obama, and the Democrats, in spite of the lame duck session, actually got quite a bit done in the past few weeks.

Yesterday Obama signed a major food safety law:  Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The biggest change in food safety laws since 1938, FSMA gives the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) new authority. Before this bill, the FDA was not able to issue a mandatory recall for contaminated food.

It’s crazy why something like this was never signed into law before. Who would be against improving the safety of our food? But then the better question to ask is,  who was in office before Obama that cared?

What I can tell you is that, no surprise, it was met by some opposition. Yes, you guessed it: The Republicans. If they’re not for health care, why would they care if a little food got contaminated and poisoned a few people? Check this out:

Rep. Jack Kingston, (R-Ga.) voted against the bill. He is likely to chair the committee which oversees food safety in the 112th Congress“While it’s a great re-election tool to terrify people into thinking that the food they’re eating is unsafe and unsanitary, and if not for the wonderful nanny-state politicians we’d be getting sick after every meal, the system we have is doing a darn good job.”

-Huff Po

So let’s see…in my mind, I am all about being proactive and preventative. You don’t want cancer? Don’t smoke.  You don’t want to get fat? Stop eating a pound of chocolate a day. You don’t want to give us health care to take care of us when we do get ill? Then at least give us a law that protects us from contaminated foods. But no, the Republicans don’t want to provide us with safe foods and they don’t want us to have decent health care or any health care for some! Hmm…I think the Republicans are trying to kill us….slowly.

“Each year, foodborne illness strikes 48 million Americans, hospitalizing a hundred thousand and killing thousands,” said Margaret Hamburg, M.D., the Commissioner of Food and Drugs. She wrote on the White House blog, “I thank the President and members of Congress for recognizing that the burden that foodborne illness places on the American people is too great, and for taking this action.”

-Huff Po

Obama also signed into law one that caught my eye, being an advocate of almost all beings not human, :) H.R. 81: The “Shark Conservation Act of 2010 and International Fisheries Agreement Clarification Act”. This law generally prohibits the removal of shark fins at sea and amends certain laws related to international fisheries.

“Shark finning has fueled massive population declines and irreversible disruption of our oceans. Finally we’ve come through with a tough approach to tackle this serious threat to our marine life,” Kerry said in a statement.

So…Obama is not only concerned about our food safety, the safety of sharks, but so many other things. If you haven’t learned, Obama signed into law yesterday 35 Bills to be exact – too long to list here. All done before the “takeover”. Just another few things to add to his long list, that somehow many seem to forget. Thank you President Obama.

So now the question is: “What do the Republicans have in store for us now?” Gee…I don’t know about you, but I’m just giddy over the Republicans taking over the House – aren’t you? I just can’t wait to see all the good things they have in store for us.

Readers: Give it up. Your thoughts that is, or anything else if it pleases you. :) Blog me.

Bob: Cute. I like it.

Peter: That news is horrible. I’d get yourself a really good water filtering system if I were you. I don’t trust any water. Even here in the Bay area. And I certainly don’t trust bottled water any better.  Hafa Adai.

Zen Lill: Thank you. And next time I get a pizza delivered late, I’m using that line.

PEACE OUT.

Tucker Carlson: The Racist And Hypocritical FOX Speaks

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 30th December 2010

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

I was going to blog something else this morning but hey why not post the most controversial topic happening in the airwaves, on the net, and evidently here too:

Tucker Carlson: Michael Vick ‘Should Have Been Executed’ (VIDEO)

Tucker Carlson filled in for Sean Hannity Tuesday night on Fox News and made a shocking claim: Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick should be executed.

Carlson led a panel discussion pegged to President Obama’s recent phone call with the Eagles owner, in which he applauded the Eagles for giving Vick a second chance following his time in jail over his dogfighting scandal.

But Carlson is not as forgiving as Obama or the Eagles.

“I’m a Christian, I’ve made mistakes myself, I believe fervently in second chances,” Carlson said. “But Michael Vick killed dogs, and he did in a heartless and cruel way. And I think, personally, he should’ve been executed for that. He wasn’t, but the idea that the President of the United States would be getting behind someone who murdered dogs? Kind of beyond the pale.”

Readers: I know you have more to say…so say it here.  The forum is open. Blog me your thoughts.

9:34 AM: Hmm..Just caught this on the Maddow Blog and wanted to add it to my post today. Worth the read:

Melissa Harris-Perry would like to add (and does)

On her blog at the Nation, Melissa Harris-Perry expands on her point last night about Michael Vick, racial history and animal rights. She writes, in part:

“Not only have animals been used as weapons against black people, but many African Americans feel that the suffering of animals evokes more empathy and concern among whites than does the suffering of black people. For example, in the days immediately following Hurricane Katrina dozens of people sent me a link to an image of pets being evacuated on an air conditioned bus. This image was a sickening juxtaposition to the conditions faced by tens of thousands of black residents trapped by the storm and it provoked great anger and pain for those who sent it to me.

“I sensed that same outrage in the responses of many black people who heard Tucker Carlson call for Vick’s execution as punishment for his crimes. It was a contrast made more raw by the recent decision to give relatively light sentences to the men responsible for thedeath of Oscar Grant. Despite agreeing that Vick’s acts were horrendous, somehow the Carlson’s moral outrage seemed misplaced. It also seemed profoundly racialized. For example, Carlson did not call for the execution of BP executives despite their culpability in the devastation of Gulf wildlife. He did not denounce the Supreme Court for their decision in US v. Stevens (April 2010) which overturned a portion of the 1999 Act Punishing Depictions of Animal Cruelty. After all with this “crush” decision the Court seems to have validated a marketplace for exactly the kinds of crimes Vick was convicted of committing. For many observers, the decision to demonize Vick seems motivated by something more pernicious than concern for animal welfare. It seems to be about race.

“It is into this murky racial history that President Obama inadvertently waded this week. Whatever the quality (or lack thereof) of his argument about incarceration and its lifelong effects on those who serve time, I suspect President could not be heard over the din of emotion, anxiety, and history around race and animals in this country. Last night I found myself similarly unable to articulate the difficult and complex relationships that can make it so difficult to hear one another across this divide. My goal was not to defend Vick nor to condemn him, but to try to understand our very different national reactions to him.”

Do yourself a favor and read Dr. Harris-Perry’s full post. You’ll feel smarter when you’re done.

Brenda: Oh how true that is. :)

Zenetta: And a Happy New Year to you as well!

Hi Suzanne: I like it and I agree. Here is an excerpt, somewhat in the same vein but of a different perspective, from one of my fave authors:

“Often people attempt to live their lives backwards. They try to have more things or more money, in order to do more of what they want, so they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want.”

What do you think?

Oh…and I got your e-mail. I’m pleased to hear that you are reading, enjoying the topics, and finding the info useful too! And so happy to hear that you are living a pretty stress free life. :) I try to live my life stress free, but it has been challenging these past few years.

Anyway, congratulations to your parents for their long and successful marriage – that is just so wonderful and too cool. Yes, Doug and I are still in the EB, with our one and only four-legged child, Lucy. However, I would love to move back to San Francisco some day soon. We’ll see…

Again, so nice to see you here.

And by the way, and this is to all of my Readers too: It is best to make a comment on the most current day even if you are commenting on a past blog post. I will always see the comments through admin, but my readers usually don’t go back to the previous day to read, not to mention anything even further back.  So your comment might be missed which is not a good thing. :) In order to keep the conversations contemporaneous, please make your comment on the most current day and refer to the blog post, if necessary, to which you are commenting on. I HOPE that is clear.

Bye bye for now…

Flap Your Lips Friday

I was driving to my mother’s house the other day and decided on the way to listen to NPR. Amy Goodman from Democracy Now was interviewing John Feal, a 9/11 first responder, and the president of the FealGood Foundation.

Lately, I haven’t been following the news in regards to the medical compensation to the thousands of first responders. But when I listened to Feal speak of his experiences, it was no surprise that I found myself in tears listening to his interview. Because of the lack of medical compensation to thousands of 9/11 first responders exposed to toxic substances at Ground Zero, many have died. Nine years later, no compensation and more deaths.

“I’ve Been to 44 Funerals in the Last 4 1/2 Years”

-9/11 First Responder John Feal Calls on Senate to Pass Zadroga Bill

The culprits behind these men and women being refused compensation are, no surprise, the party of “no” Republicans.

“More than nine years after the September 11th attacks, the Senate may be on the verge of finally voting on legislation that would grant $6.2 billion medical coverage and compensation to thousands of 9/11 first responders exposed to toxic substances at Ground Zero. The House passed a $7.4 billion version of the bill in September. But the Senate version has been held up by a Republican filibuster. We speak with John Feal, a former construction worker and 9/11 first responder.”

Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, aka: “Dr Coburn”,  has said that he’ll likely block the measure again. Speaking on Fox News on Tuesday, he said the Senate needs time to consider the bill.

They had nine years to get this bill passed. The amount of compensation this bill would grant has been diminished, more lives are being lost, and he wants more time. I bet if a member of his family was suffering, time would be of the essence.

Well, good news! Thankfully a few days ago, because of a lot of hard work, strong leadership and determination, this bill finally passed!

America Made Their Voices Heard for Our 9/11 Heroes

Today we saw a true Christmas miracle take place in the US Senate.

Two weeks ago, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act was defeated on a procedural vote, the casualty of political gamesmanship so common in Washington. Because we didn’t have the votes to overcome a Republican filibuster, this crucial piece of legislation to provide critical health care for our brave 9/11 heroes could not proceed to an up or down vote.

But that vote two weeks ago was a turning point. It made people sit up and say, wait a minute, this isn’t right, we owe these brave men and women. Who are we as Americans if we don’t take care of our heroes? Well, it’s been nine long years since these brave men and women answered the call on 9/11 and I’m so proud that today the US Senate has now answered theirs.

Democrats and Republicans came together to finally pass this bill and fulfill the moral obligation we have to our 9/11 heroes and provide them with the healthcare they need.

We would not be here without the strong leadership of Senator Schumer, Congresswoman Maloney, Congressman Nadler, Congressman King, Congressman Weiner, Congressman Crowley, Congressman McMahon, the entire New York Congressional delegation. And I’m so grateful to Leader Reid, Speaker Pelosi and Leader Hoyer whose leadership has allowed us to expedite passage of this important legislation today. Thanks also to Secretary Clinton who worked tirelessly on this bill while in the Senate.

And then there are all the first responders who’ve been working with me and my team since I came to the Senate last year. They’ve walked the halls of Congress, they’ve made calls, written letters, appeared on TV, whatever it took to help their brothers and sisters who are sick and dying get the health care they need. We couldn’t have done this without their tireless advocacy.

Many of us felt deeply that this bill was the right thing to do, but there were some who insisted on playing politics with the lives of 9/11 heroes. Thankfully, Americans from across the country made their voices heard. Jon Stewart, Shepard Smith, and many others gave the issue the extra attention it needed and put pressure on Republicans in Washington to do the right thing.

People from all over tweeted and Facebooked, blogged and called their senators in support of this bill and to express outrage at the Senate’s inability to get this done. I’ve been truly moved by the overwhelming reaction to this bill, and I can’t thank you all enough for helping make this Christmas miracle a reality for our 9/11 heroes.

Readers: Kudos to all of those mentioned above, and in my opinion, even bigger kudos to Jon Stewart from The Daily Show! On December 17th Stewart dedicated his entire last show of the year to discussing the 9/11 First Responders Bill.  It looks like their passion for getting this bill passed finally paid off.

Anna & Peter of Guam, all the Chamorros, and all my overseas friends:

Merry Christmas!

Sam: Congratulations to you! And yeah, some “friend”. Peace.

Anon: I don’t know; I’ll have to ask him. I’ll let you know. In the mean time, everyone knows I am a girl’s girl, so I see harm in flirting. :)

Bob: Hilarious!! Loved it!

Nathlie: Thank you. And I wish a happy holiday for all of you as well!

It’s Friday….I’m done flapping my lips – start flapping yours.

JOY & PEACE

Moore On Maddow Live, Obama Signs The Repeal Of “DADT”

Good morning!

So…has anyone been watching Rachel Maddow’s “Leadership in America” live show @ 92Y the past two days? Last night she interviewed Michael Moore. If you didn’t catch the segment, here it is.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Readers: I haven’t blogged about Wikileaks at all here, and it has been one of the hot topics in the media. What has been on your mind in respect to all of the chatter? Do you agree Moore in regards to full disclosure of our government? What do you think of the date rape charges against Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks?

I can say one thing, I loved what Michael Moore had to say about supporting women who have been raped and abused in our society. I wish there were more men like him that would stand up and fight in support of the plight.

And almost last but certainly not least, I want to recognize that Obama signed the appeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. Yay! – This is a day for celebration!

I tried to post the video of Obama’s speech but unfortunately had no luck. Click here to see.

Thoughts?  You know what to do – Blog me.

Anonymous: Well…in regards to the compliments, all I can say is…Thank youa girl loves to be recognized and appreciated. As far as what you would like to do….all is can say is…Stand in line. :)

Morris: Okay. I hear you. “Maybe” I will be, as Lloyd puts it, “forthcoming with the 411″, the next time I’m “going to a party at…”.  HOPE is always good. I speak of HOPE a lot here, so I guess there is no reason why my readers can’t HOPE too. :) Season’s Greeting to you as well!

Bob: Oh, I laughed at that one, but I know I shouldn’t.

Peter: Gee, I wonder why anyone would try to veto a bill that would protect children from abuse? Sickening. Just when will that Cardinal be ousted? Hafa Adai.

Terri: That has never stopped any man from trying.

PEacE OUt…
