…And Some People Say We Aren’t A Racist Society

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 20th May 2010

Bookmark and Share

‘We aren’t a racist society.” I’m always shocked when I hear that statement, and I think, “Where are you living?” How can you not say that racism doesn’t exist when it is all around us – everywhere.

Research and discussions with parents of the children who participated in this study, indicate that white parents as a whole do not talk to their kids about race as much as black parents.

A 2007 study in the Journal of Marriage and Family found that 75 percent of white families with kindergartners never, or almost never, talk about race. For black parents the number is reversed with 75 percent addressing race with their children.

Not surprising is it? Why would whites talk about race to their kids when they don’t need to worry about racism? Yeah, I’d say that little girl has a healthy ego -it’s all about me…But really, it’s all about me being white. Anybody that looks like me, must be smart and good, and anybody darker than me is mean and ugly. Basically, ‘white’ is ‘clean and good’, and ‘black’ is ‘dirty and bad’. The child is strictly judging based on skin color. It is sad and scary. Where did this come from?

How about turning ‘dirty’ into ‘diversity’ and talking to your kids and explaining to them that diversity is a beautiful thing, and the color of one’s skin doesn’t matter…it is the inside that matters. I don’t know how in these days with so much racism all around us, parents who truly care about their children growing up to be accepting and decent human beings, aren’t meeting with their children and discussing different races, cultures, and the beauty of the diversity of the people who inhabit our planet, etc.

In my opinion it is simply irresponsible parenting, and leads to raising children thinking they are better simply because of the color of their skin. It is disgusting. Those kind of thoughts at a young age need to be stopped or all we’re doing is raising children to believe something that is not true, and promoting racism as acceptable behavior and thinking as adults.

Then I saw this article:

The Secret Service investigated an Alabama high school teacher for using the example of shooting President Obama while teaching a geometry lesson.

The Secret Service spoke with the man, a teacher at Corner High School in Jefferson County, but decided not to arrest him.

“We did not find a credible threat,” Roy Sex ton, of Birmingham’s Secret Service office, told the Birmingham News. “As far as the Secret Service is concerned, we looked into it, we talked to the gentleman and we have closed our investigation.”

The teacher was apparently teaching his geometry students about parallel lines and angles, officials said. He used the example of where to stand and aim if shooting Obama.??

A student in the class described the lesson: “He was talking about angles and said, ‘If you’re in this building, you would need to take this angle to shoot the president.’”?

The district superintendent told the News that the unnamed teacher will not be disciplined.

“We are going to have a long conversation with him about what’s appropriate,” he said. “It was extremely poor judgment on his part, and a poor choice of words.”

The superintendent, Phil Hammonds, did not immediately return a request for comment.

Late update: The teacher has been placed on paid leave and may be fired.

And this was a comment from one of the parents:

Caroline Polk, the parent of a ninth-grader at the school, said she doesn’t believe the teacher ought to be fired.?? ”We all make mistakes, and we should be able to learn from our mistakes,” she said.

There it is again…whites giving themselves deference when we know that if this same incident happened to a white president, this would not only be all over every news station, but all of the parents would be screaming for the teacher to be fired and arrested. And he most certainly would be. But no, this happens to Obama and the result is, ‘no arrest and the investigation is closed.’

And moving on….

March with King, vote with Goldwater: Rand Paul, the newly elected Republican nominee for Senate in Kentucky, is talking out of both sides of his mouth when it comes to his position and comments about the Civil Rights Act.

Paul says that he is against legalized or institutional racism. In fact Paul says,

“I don’t believe in any racism…I don’t think we should have any form of institutional racism.” But when pressed on whether he supported some aspects of the law — which banned discrimination in the workplace and public places, such as schools and voting booths — Paul answered with comments about how the government shouldn’t get involved in private business.

How can someone say that they are so against racism and in any form and then in the same conversation, not to mention the same sentence, not support government getting involved in private business, (in regards to Civil Rights) when we know discrimination will take place if the government doesn’t get involved in private business (in regards to Civil Rights)?

Paul can’t. – For instance, at the end of the interview with Rachel Maddow, Paul can’t seem to give a straight answer. In Rachel’s frustration she asks a simple yes or no question as to whether the Walworth’s lunch counters should’ve been desegregated or not. The video says it all. If you can’t watch the entire segment, I suggest you watch the video starting at 13:00-till the end, roughly 6 minutes.

Rand ends with saying, “Every fiber of my being doesn’t believe in discrimination…” Yeah, even though he wants to allow private businesses to discriminate along the basis of race because of property rights. As Rachel points out this is an extreme view, and will be the focus of his candidacy and talked about again and again. Rand paul seems to think this subject is ‘not an issue’. Well of course not Rand, you’re white. Segregation and any form of racism does not and will not ever affect you and your life.

So….who are these people that say we aren’t a racist society?

My Blog Reflects The ‘Real World’

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 4th May 2010

Bookmark and Share

Vince: In regards to your request, I will never bite the bullet and screen my blog. The last thing that I want my blog to be is unauthentic and artificial. What I hear on the blog is what I hear outside in the real world. My blog reflects the real world, and that’s how it should be.

Just the other day while Doug and I were riding the ferry going to San Francisco, we were passing San Quentin Jail, and a group of guys going to the baseball game starting making comments. I listened to a man say, “I don’t feel sorry for any one in there. They all deserve to be there.” Now how does he know that? So many people are convicted of crimes that they did not commit, and so many criminals are never convicted that are guilty. How can one make such a cold bold blanket statement? I looked at him, a white guy, and then my eyes were drawn to his arm where I noticed he had a tattoo of the face of a Bull dog against the American flag. I looked at Doug, ‘Just noticing’, not judging.

He then started joking with an older couple visiting from the midwest. I lost track of their conversation amongst his other friends joking and laughing around him. But the one thing I did hear was that this guy was a cop. And then the last thing that I heard come out of his mouth, and said with pride: “Oh yeah and I was in Texas. Those people down there, they’re a lot more prejudice than you and me.” He and the couple began to laugh. I was disgusted.

This cop not only admitted that he was a racist, but expressed pride that he’s not as racist as the people in Texas. So I guess he feels his racist attitude can be excused because there are people who are more racist than him? Since when is a degree of racism okay? Like Minnie said, ‘We keep our niggers under control but we treat them with compassion.” That’s like a murderer saying, “Leave me alone. I only killed one person. Arrest the guy down the street; he killed more than I did.” They’ll say and do whatever is needed to justify their racism. And this cop has the prefect job to act out his racism. Feeling safe and cozy now in the real world?

So why should I have an artificial world here and not reflect what the real world is like? Why should I make it all cozy so that people feel comfortable? The world is not always comfortable. In fact for many it is unfriendly and unsafe to say the least.

My blog is not like the many blogs out there that screen and edit as they see fit…so that no one is offended or no one’s feelings get hurt. People are offended and feelings get hurt in the real world. It should not be any different here on my blog. I am not delighted with some of the comments, actions or thoughts, on my blog, nor am I in the real world, but I allow them here because they are real.

Why should racists and sexists etc., not be allowed to express their viewpoint? We could live in a fantasy world and pretend that they don’t exist or that if we ignore them, they’ll disappear. Been there, done that. Guess what? They’re still here. Yes, ignorance is blissful, but it does nothing to advance the betterment of our world. It does nothing for those that are the target of the perpetrators. It is only for our own self; to make us feel better…to make us think that what exists out there is really not that bad.

I have news for you; it is that bad. And the more we are aware that there are many Leroys, Georges and Minnies of the world walking and living amongst us, the more that we can learn and power ourselves up…ban together and end the ‘isms’ that are destroying our country…our world. It is the only way.

If you don’t want to to feel uncomfortable….if you don’t want your buttons pushed, or a sick feeling to arise…or the disbelief that people can actually feel and act as they do towards each other, then perhaps you might want to find another blog to read, that suits your needs.

Vince, please don’t take my comments to you personally. They are said to all who have asked me before to censor my blog. I appreciate that you broached the subject again, as I have never given my answer much thought as I have done today. So I thank you for inspiring my write. And I hope that you will continue reading knowing that I will always be keeping it real.

*****************

Robert: You already know the answer to your statement. It’s not going to happen.

Floyd: Your words were meaningful and inspiring. Much more so than mine would’ve been had I chosen to respond to Leroy. I can see your heart, soul and mind are in  the right place. If only words were enough….

Randoff: Thank you for your apology. As much as I did not expect one, of course I graciously and sincerely accept it. And please don’t feel that you reacted too cruelly. My skin has thickened quite a bit since I started this blog.  I have endured much worse criticism than your quick witted response. :)

Again, thank you for the recognition and your words. I assure you they have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. And by the way, I’m addicted to my blog too. Now…before the entire staff starts to complain that I haven’t launched yet, I will end this post and wish you and all of my readers a beautiful day!

Peace out…

Taliban Suspected Of Sickening Female Afghan Students

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 28th April 2010

Bahameen: It doesn’t surprise me that the people of Iran, as well as other countries, are being blocked from my blog, again. This was sent to me by one of my readers who couldn’t post the other day. The topic is so important I wanted to post this article for her.

Again, the abuse that women of the world go through is just atrocious. What men will do to continue to keep women down and in their control, has reached higher levels. It is no longer about slavery and abuse, which is bad enough. Now men are, in my mind, attempting mass murder by poisoning young girls.

Taliban suspected of sickening female Afghan students

(CNN) — Afghan authorities will investigate the sudden illness of students and staff at three schools in the past week in northern Afghanistan, the Afghan Human Independent Rights Commission said on Sunday. Local doctors suggested the Taliban may be the perpetrators of possible poison attacks.

“During the last seven days three cases of poisoning [have] occurred in Kunduz Province,” said Syed Karim Talash, the director of the commission office in the province.

At least 88 girls and teachers became ill in separate cases at three girls’ schools.

The cause of the illnesses was not known, but Talash said poison gas was suspected.

“It is really big concern for us, and big concern for the family of the girls,” Talash said.

Dr. Mohammad Qasam Khamoosh, who treated girls from two schools, said “unknown gases” were responsible for the mass illnesses.

These are “terrorist activities against education in the country,” he said.

Girls were not allowed to attend school during the Taliban‘s rule. Girls’ schools have been open in the region since 2001.

Khamoosh said authorities were able to gather a sample of the gas, which has been sent off for testing.

Kunduz province has seen a drastic influx in terrorist activity, particularly by the group known as Hizb-e-Islami, led by the notorious leader Gulbudeen Hekmatyar. It’s an independent group that has increasingly worked under the Taliban umbrella in recent years.

Readers: I don’t know how these women endure. All I can say is how strong willed they must be; they have to be, to continually fight for their lives….their safety and well-being. These actions that these horrible men take do not break these women down. No, on the contrary. As much as I pray to see these atrocities come to an end, the more these women endure, the stronger these women get. The men may think they’re breaking them down, but they are not.

Bahameen: Know that you and the other girls are on my mind and you will continue to be supported. I am sure any one of you would make an amazing girlz, and I look forward to the day when you and others will join me if you chose. Be well and stay strong.

Brian: Thanks for encouraging me and my readers to take action against Goldman Sachs. If you or anyone else wants to sign Bold Progressives petition to launch a criminal investigation of Goldman along with other wall streeters, as well as calling your representatives, I’ve made it easy – click here.

Hi Helena: Nice to hear from you again (?) It is a little disconcerting isn’t it? I was just thinking today, again,  how I have to filter through so much junk to get to the good stuff, and then to have to decipher if what I think is actually good, or if someone is just trying to scam me. It is never ending; there are days where I wish e-mail wasn’t such a major tool of communication.

Anna, Peter: You both have been so committed to posting information on my blog for your peeps, I feel like it is just as much your blog as it is mine. Obviously your work has helped spread the word. I too hope that the Catholic church will be held accountable for the allegations of some of it’s clergy and those ‘butt bandits’ will pay a price. I do believe that your consistent actions in this area, (and others!) deserve some of the credit to say the least, in bringing and keeping these horrific atrocities in the light.

Hello Mike: Don’t worry.  If your persistency pays off, more power to you.

Shirley: Many people read my blog strictly for the health tips. I think this was a good one to post – Thanks.

Marie: Your diary is very amusing. Love the toothbrush bit. Can’t wait to hear about the other ‘crap’. :)

Selvig: You’re right; it is repulsive. I hope that you’ll express your views to all of your friends, Republicans included. Everyone needs to stand up and against this.

Lloyd: Your guess is as good as mine. Like many other things in life, timing is everything. Keep trying. :)

Kids in Church: Cute. On both accounts.

Justin: Thanks for your two. Literally. :)

Fred: Thanks too for your article.

Hi Sonja: I’m sure you are aware that your link wasn’t there, but here it is for those interested. :)

Daemon: Surprisingly, I am actually aware of the financial situation in Greece. I won’t pretend to understand it all, as I am no economist. I hope that the situation improves.

Maurice: All I can do is laugh at your comment; it is just so silly.  Love it -You may not be joking but I’m sure Aquatic rat fur for some men would be quite appropriate. In regards to your question: I have no idea.

John: Nice to hear from you again. No, Mr Hawking and I did not have a conversation, although I would’ve like to. So yes, it does seem more than just a coincidence doesn’t it? ‘Just noticing’…Perhaps like many others who are reading my blog and attempting to lift material, he too has been reading and getting ideas. I am not accusing him of anything, but your comment, as well as Suzy’s does make me think. Thanks. Now I am very curious to see his documentary. Hello to Connie and her women’s club. :)

Doug: Obviously they haven’t gotten a clue yet. Perhaps an Aquatic rat fur vest would help.

Readers: With all of the political powwow going on, did anyone partake in Camp OFA in your community? I went on Sunday and it was very exciting and informative. I have joined two community groups, and I’m looking forward to collaborating with other like-minded peeps in ensuring a successful election in November. And let’s have some fun too – okay?

World Issues On My Mind

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 24th April 2010

Bookmark and Share

Good morning.

There is so much to discuss today, my mind is reeling over too many topics to choose from.

Between Goldman Sachs ‘Big Short’, intent on screwing over the livelihood of Americans, to Larry Summers defending the megabanks when all along the mantra has been to end ”The too big to fail”, all I see is a bunch of white boys, (and I call them boys because they don’t deserve to be called men) their hands holding their heads, their faces in dire need of a shot of Botox.

And then we have the Tibetans who are getting no help from the Chinese ever since the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that happened in Tibet. The media consistently labels it as the “China Quake” when “It is worth noting, for many reasons, that Jyekundo is firmly planted in what was formerly Tibet and the vast majority of the victims are Tibetan.” Thanks for the update Quin.  I too labeled it as China until Lin commented a little over a week ago, and straightened that out for us. Thanks Lin. It is amazing the power and the control of mainstream media – we need to dig and constantly dig if we are to get the truth.

My heart goes out to the Tibetans, and I hope that some how, some way that if someone is reading my blog can do something to help, they will.

The Tibetans that died in Jyekundo had the right to die as Tibetans, not as Chinese.

And then the Sudan election. Save Darfur, chimed in yesterday but I am compelled to give my two today. If you haven’t already taken action now is the time to do so. Click here to send a letter to Hillary Clinton. We all know by now how easy it is to rig an election. If it can happen in the United States, you can bet it can happen in other countries with less sophisticated systems. Sudan is one of them. Don’t let the people of sudan down. They are counting on help from Obama and in order for Obama to continue to take a strong stance he needs continual support from us. The Sudanese, not to mention the Darfuris have gone through too much to have to endure another Omar al-Bashir presidency. This vote was not free and fair.

And lastly, another comment from the Ori threatening to give us another ‘natural’ disaster. Just when will peace come to this planet?

What’s up in your minds?

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my ‘loyal’(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

Deportation By Attrition

I know we have only touched the surface of this issue here. A few of my readers have commented on Arizona’s Immigration Bill, and I posted a video the other day, but I feel more needs to be said. I found this article, written by Jim Wallis. I may not necessarily agree with his point of view from a religious stance, but I like what he has to say in terms of getting to the heart of it….and not surprising, considering the backbone of this bill, at the helm sits “Racism”.

I don’t see how anybody can view Arizona’s Immigration Bill as anything less. I think it is a bunch of bull, and yes I am speaking to you Mr. Kobach (an attorney and law-school professor who helped craft the bill), who claims that, “The law wouldn’t provide police an avenue to violate a person’s rights against unreasonable search and seizure.” In my opinion this gives police permission and the right to do just that, and more.

How easily it will be for officers to racially profile a person while enforcing this new law. Racial profiling already exists…it is already happening now, regardless of the fact that it is illegal. And while an officer might not intend to racially profile while enforcing the law, that’s what will happen. We know this.

And if you’re a racist officer, lucky you. You now have your dream job of being a bad ass with a badge who gets to express his racist thoughts. And the icing on the cake: You will now have a law to support your racist actions and protect you from being accused of racial profiling, and probably more. You can now mask your racism by hiding behind the statement: “Hey, I was just doing my job.”

And who’s going to be targeted the most, not to mention probably 100 percent of the time? Let me put it bluntly: We all know, no one white is going to be pulled over by an officer in suspect of his or her immigration status requesting their ‘papers’. It just isn’t going to happen.

This law if passed, will simply take officers away from focusing on real crimes, violent crimes, such as rape and murder, and basically give them free will to target and harass individuals based on the color of their skin. If this isn’t a racist bill, I don’t know what is. This bill really should be called, “How to legally get away with racism”.

Arizona’s Immigration Bill Is A Social And Racial Sin

I got up at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning to fly to Phoenix, Arizona, to speak at a press conference and rally at the State Capitol at the invitation of the state’s clergy and other leaders in the immigration reform movement. The harshest enforcement bill in the country against undocumented immigrants just passed the Arizona state House and Senate, and is only awaiting the signature of Governor Janet Brewer to become law.

Senate Bill 1070 would require law enforcement officials in the state of Arizona to investigate someone’s immigration status if there is “reasonable suspicion” that the person might be undocumented. I wonder who that would be, and if anybody who doesn’t have brown skin will be investigated. Those without identification papers, even if they are legal, are subject to arrest; so don’t forget your wallet on your way to work if you are Hispanic in Arizona. You can also be arrested if you are stopped and are simply with people who are undocumented — even if they are your family. Parents or children of “mixed-status families” (made up of legal and undocumented, as many immigrant families are out here) could be arrested if they are found together. You can be arrested if you are “transporting or harboring” undocumented people. Some might consider driving immigrant families to and from church to be Christian ministry — but it will now be illegal in Arizona.

For the first time, all law enforcement officers in the state will be enlisted to hunt down undocumented people, which will clearly distract them from going after truly violent criminals, and will focus them on mostly harmless families whose work supports the economy and who contribute to their communities. And do you think undocumented parents will now go to the police if their daughter is raped or their family becomes a victim of violent crime? Maybe that’s why the state association of police chiefs is against SB 1070.

This proposed law is not only mean-spirited — it will be ineffective and will only serve to further divide communities in Arizona, making everyone more fearful and less safe. This radical new measure, which crosses many moral and legal lines, is a clear demonstration of the fundamental mistake of separating enforcement from comprehensive immigration reform. We all want to live in a nation of laws, and the immigration system in the U.S. is so broken that is serving no one well. But enforcement without reform of the system is merely cruel. Enforcement without compassion is immoral. Enforcement that breaks up families is unacceptable. And enforcement of this law would force us to violate our Christian conscience, which we simply will not do. It makes it illegal to love your neighbor in Arizona.

Before the rally and press event, I visited some immigrant families who work at Neighborhood Ministries, an impressive community organization affiliated with Sojourners’ friends at the Christian Community Development Association. I met a group of women who were frightened by the raids that have been occurring, in which armed men invade their homes and neighborhoods with guns and helicopters. When the rumors of massive raids spread, many of these people flee both their homes and their workplaces, and head for The Church at The Neighborhood Center as the only place they feel safe and secure. But will police invade the churches if they are suspected of “harboring” undocumented people, because it is the law? Will the nurse practitioner I met at their medical clinic serving only uninsured people be arrested for being “with” the children of families who are here illegally as she treats them?

At the rally, I started with the words of Jesus (which drew cheers from the crowd gathered at the State Capitol), who instructed his disciples to “welcome the stranger,” and said that whatever we do to “the least of these, who are members of my family” we do to him. I think that means that to obey Jesus and his gospel will mean to disobey SB 1070 in Arizona. I looked at the governor’s Executive Tower and promised that many Christians in Arizona won’t comply with this law because the people they will target will be members of our “family” in the body of Christ. And any attack against them is an attack against us, and the One we follow.

Catholic Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles just called this Arizona measure “the country’s most retrogressive, mean-spirited, and useless immigration law” in the land. On CNN, I defended the Cardinal’s comments, which likened the requirement of people always carrying their “papers” to the most oppressive regimes of Nazism and Communism. I wonder whether the tea party movement that rails against government intrusion will rail against this law, or whether those who resist the forced government registration of their guns will resist the forced government requirement that immigrants must always carry their documentation. Will the true conservatives please stand up here? We are all waiting.

Arizona’s SB 1070 must be named as a social and racial sin, and should be denounced as such by people of faith and conscience across the nation. This is not just about Arizona, but about all of us, and about what kind of country we want to be. It’s time to stand up to this new strategy of “deportation by attrition,” which I heard for the first time today in Arizona. It is a policy of deliberate political cruelty, and it should be remembered that “attrition” is a term of war. Arizona is deciding whether to wage war on the body of Christ. We should say that if you come after one part of the body, you come after all of us.
