Will Congress Do The Right Thing?

Good morning!

Congress is back from a 2-week recess. Now they need to make some decisions. The question is…Will Congress do the right thing?

From the Huff Po:

Obama Gun Control Speech: President Makes Push In Central Connecticut (VIDEO)

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

* Obama says “We will not walk away” from gun promise

* Gun control measures are struggling in Senate

* Newtown families to fly on Air Force One with president (Updates with excerpts from prepared remarks)

By Roberta Rampton

HARTFORD, Conn., April 8 (Reuters) – President Barack Obama urged Americans on Monday to pressure a reluctant Congress to pass new gun control legislation – one of his top domestic policy priorities – as he traveled to Connecticut, where December’s school massacre took place.

Initial momentum for tougher U.S. gun control laws sought by Obama after the Dec. 14 shootings in Newtown has stalled in Congress in the face of fierce lobbying by gun rights groups like the National Rifle Association.

Obama, speaking at the University of Hartford, said that date changed everything for families of the 20 children and six adults killed at Sandy Hook elementary school.

“I know many of you in Newtown wondered if the rest of us would live up to the promises we made in those dark days … once the television trucks left, once the candles flickered out, once the teddy bears were gathered up,” Obama was to say in prepared remarks. “We will not walk away from the promise we’ve made.”

No major gun legislation has passed the U.S. Congress since 1994 and the current White House guns push is in trouble.

“The policy window is either really close to closed, or closed entirely,” said John Hudak, an expert at the Brookings Institution think tank. “In honesty, this is really a last-ditch effort by the White House.”

Obama is hoping to build support among lawmakers for several gun control measures, including universal background checks for gun buyers. The Senate is expected to take up gun control legislation as early as this week.

The president has invited 11 parents of children killed in Newtown to fly back to Washington with him aboard Air Force One after his speech. The parents are set to lobby Congress this week for gun control measures, although it may be too late to rescue major legislation sought by Obama.

Some of Obama’s proposals – reinstating a U.S. ban on assault weapons and cracking down on high-capacity ammunition clips – already appear to have little chance of passing the Democratic-led Senate, let alone the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

BACKGROUND CHECKS

Obama is hoping to salvage the proposal for background checks on all gun buyers to try to ensure that criminals and others prohibited from buying firearms cannot get them. There are not yet enough votes in the Senate for expanded background checks as Democrats seek Republican votes.

“Congress is only going to act on them if they hear from you – the American people,” Obama will say in his address.

Around a dozen Republican senators led by Rand Paul of Kentucky have threatened to use procedural tactics to try to prevent any votes on the gun measures.

“You deserve better,” Obama will say. “You deserve a vote.”

Last week, Obama gave a speech in Denver trying to rally support for gun control, touting a new state law in Colorado – scene of two of the deadliest gun massacres in American history – as “a model of what’s possible.”

The president’s speech on Monday will be followed up by a White House event on Tuesday with Vice President Joe Biden and law enforcement officials. Biden also is due to speak about gun control on Thursday on the MSNBC cable TV network.

First lady Michelle Obama is set to address gun control during a visit on Wednesday to Chicago, which has faced a spree of gun violence. (Editing by Alistair Bell and Xavier Briand)

I just got caught up on 60 minutes from Sunday evening as well. The topic: Gun control. If you didn’t see it, I am posting it here too. It is a very moving piece as parents of the loved ones lost express their grief and faith.

Readers: I stand in support of president Obama. You can feel his compassion, conviction, and commitment to bringing about change in this very important issue. I encourage you to stand up and raise your voices in support of gun control too. Make your thoughts known to Congress and push Congress to put politics aside and do the right thing.  The time is now.

My Body Belongs To Me

Good morning!

You probably already know where my opinion lies in answer to yesterday’s posed question. But in case you didn’t, I repeat, as these girls did, “Fuck your morals – My body belongs to me.”

I am posting it again today as a continuation of my support because enough can’t be said or shown when women endure such abuse and oppression on a daily basis.  Couldn’t see the video yesterday? This write from Ynaija contains some photos:

In support of ‘Amina’: FEMEN stages International Topless Jihad Day (GRAPHIC PHOTOS)

FEMEN strikes again: Topless protesters staged demonstrations near mosques and Tunisian embassies across Europe on Thursday to express support for embattled FEMEN activist Amina Tyler.

“We’re free, we’re naked, it’s our right, it’s our body, it’s our rules, and nobody can use religion, and some other holy things, to abuse women, to oppress them,” FEMEN member Alexandra Shevchenko said in Berlin, according to AFP.

“And we’ll fight against them. And our boobs will be stronger than their stones,” she added.

Tunisian student Amina Tyler sparked a massive controversy in mid-March by posting topless photos of herself on Facebook, with the slogans “Fuck Your Morals” and “My Body Belongs To Me, And Is Not The Source Of Anyone’s Honor,” painted on her body.

Islamist hackers responded with an attack on FEMEN’s Tunisian Facebook Fan Page, replacing topless photos with quotes from the Quran. An Islamic preacher even stated that Tyler could be stoned for her act of defiance.

In support of Tyler’s plight, FEMEN labeled April 4 “International Topless Jihad Day” and organized protests across Europe.

“This day will mark the beginning of a new, genuine Arab Spring, after which true freedom, freedom without mullahs and caliphs, will come to Tunisia! Long live the topless jihad against infidels! Our tits are deadlier than your stones!” the group wrote in a statement on its Facebook page.

AFP reports that about two dozen activists showed up in Paris, where FEMEN has its international headquarters. The women tried to reach the Tunisian embassy but were deterred by police.

Five activists gathered near an Islamic cultural center in Brussels, Belgium, Euronews writes. And according to the Gazetta Del Sud, Italian womenprotested outside the Tunisian consulate in Milan, carrying signs that read “Free Amina” and “Bare Breasts Against Islam.”

The Interfax News agency adds that the protests spread to the Ukraine, with police detaining FEMEN activists in Kiev. “The FEMEN activists drove up to the entrance to the mosque in a car, where they were arrested by the police,” Interfax cites the police reports.

Activists and journalists have expressed concern about Tyler’s well-being in recent days. While her lawyer said the young woman was doing fine, several reports suggest Tyler is being held by her parents in seclusion.

“No, it’s not fine. Amina is with her family but that’s not ‘good news,’ as some newspapers earlier wrote,” journalist Caroline Fourest wrote in a blog for HuffPost France. “No one close to her, none of her friends or people in her support network have seen her or heard that she was free, free to move and speak,” Fourest added.

Readers: It has been brought to my attention that some of you may see my blog differently than I do. I tried to post the video that is included in the article that I posted. Although I included it, I am not able to see it in the admin end, only when I preview it, and then the text runs along the right side of it, as it did in yesterday’s post. It is not my intention to show it that way,  but it is the only way I can include it otherwise it disappears. HOPEfully when it posts you will see it too.  If not, and you want to watch it, click on the article title and you can view it on the Huff Po. Good morning!

The things that OTWs have to endure from the racists in our society…everyday. And as I peruse yesterday’s comments…whoa…the racists are rambling this morning. The comments are just getting too disgusting. Does it ever stop?

Jourdan Dunn Reveals Racist Encounter With Makeup Artist, Wouldn’t Touch Her Black Skin

Jourdan Dunn

Model Chanel Iman recently spoke outabout dealing with racism in the fashion industry and now Jordan Dunn is following suit.

The 22-year-old British beauty has landed campaigns for Yves Saint Laurent, Tommy Hilfiger and Burberry, graced the cover of Vogue Italia and Teen Vogue, and won Model Of The Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2008, yet still faces the type of racial insensitivity that harkens back to the Civil Rights era.

In a feature article for Net-A-Porter’s The Edit, Jourdan talks about being turned away from model castings because the client “didn’t want any more black girls.” A story identical to Chanel Iman’s experience within the industry.

And it gets worse.

Jourdan, who was the first black model to walk in Prada’s fashion show in over a decade, also reveals the time a white makeup artist said that she didn’t want to work on Dunn’s face because she was black. This wasn’t a case of a white makeup artist not knowing how to apply products to a darker skin tone — this was just pure racism. Although, Jourdan has dealt with that issue as well. Back in October 2011, Jourdan expressed her frustration publicly with the following tweet:

I swear some people need to learn how to do black hair/skin

Jourdan is able to deal with these issues and more with help from her mentors/friends that include W’s Edward Enninful and famed makeup artist Pat McGrath. She credits her mother for building her self-esteem and being a great role model. And her resilience comes from being a single mother to her 3-year-old son, Riley, who suffers from sickle-cell disease.

“If ever I’m sad, I just have to remember, I’m not doing this for me, I’m doing it for him.”

We’re glad that Jourdan is able to enjoy a successful career despite working in an industry that so blatantly disregards diversity, however, it’s hard not to wonder what heights she could reach if that wasn’t the case.

*******

Readers: People like this makeup artist should be called on their shit. Whoever hired her should’ve fired her on the spot – You’re outta here – See ya. But we know that isn’t going to happen. A lot worse happens and nothing is done. Still…we can’t shut our eyes or look the other way. Thankfully, there are peeps out there and on my blog that I know do something. We have to be diligent because they certainly are, as we can see.

Got to run. Thoughts? Blog me.

A YouTube video that’s gone viral recently shows that our perceptions of who has money and how much they have is quite skewed. The poor and middle class have a lot less than most people think, while the rich have a lot more. And the Top 1% are off the charts.

The video, which has been viewed more than 3.8 million times, draws heavily on the wealth inequality work of  Michael Norton and Dan Ariely, professors at the business schools of Harvard and Duke business, respectively. The duo asked Americans how they thought wealth was distributed and found that the estimated and ideal divisions of the wealth pie bear little resemblance to reality.

The piece also features a CNNMoney story on an AFL-CIO report that showed CEOs earned 380 times the average worker.

Check out the video for yourself:
