Mika Brzezinski: I Almost Left ‘Morning Joe’ Over Pay Disparity (VIDEO)

Mika Brzezinski revealed on Thursday’s “Morning Joe” that she almost left the show in 2008 because she was being paid so much less than her male colleagues.

Brzezinski recounts her fight about her pay disparity in her new book, “Knowing Your Value.” She told her fellow panelists–including Nora Ephron and Norah O’Donnell, who are featured in the book–what happened.

“I had found out that I was the lowest paid at the table and sometimes by far,” she said. “I didn’t think I should be making more than any of you guys…but these [disparities] were vast.” (How vast?In another interview, Brzezinski said she was making fourteen times less than co-host Joe Scarborough.) She said that she came to the conclusion that she was “at the bottom of the barrel inside because of the deal I had cut for myself.”

Willie Geist asked her why she didn’t walk away. “We fixed it,” Brzezinski said.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Readers: Mika’s response of saying that she didn’t negotiate well or that she didn’t know her value is the same as saying, “I wore my skirt too short…”

Her book is typical of her performance on the show: She always acquiesces to Joe. She pretends that the “man” didn’t know what he was doing to her, when he knew. How could he not? Look, it’s Joe’s show right? The real culprit here is this guy, “Joe”. He knew how much everyone was being offered. He knew what everybody’s salary was, including how little they were offering Mika.

Once again, it’s men being sneaky and getting over on the women again. It’s men saying, “Fuck the women; it’s all about us men.” Need I say what color I’m talking about here? So yeah, They didn’t have any problems giving “Joe” 14 times more money than her.(!) And they certainly weren’t going to say anything when they offered her a measly sum to co-host with Joe. They were probably thinking, “Great we’re getting her way cheap. Don’t say anything.”

Mika: Name the man who was responsible!

But no. Instead of blaming it on “Joe” the culprit, and “MSNBC”, she goes and blames herself for not “negotiating” a good deal because she didn’t “know her value”. The “Morning Joe Show” had just begun. It was a new show. How could she know what to negotiate? How could she know her value? Do men know? It’s not like men know some little secret about their value that women don’t. I don’t think so.

And I don’t buy that none of her colleagues were privy to the fact that they were making so much more money than she was. Look, we all know when it comes to money, men talk. I’m sure they spoke about their salaries amongst themselves, They knew exactly how much each of them was making and they knew exactly how much Mika was making – a lot less.

But did anyone bother to tell Mika what they were making? Did anyone bother to tell her that she was basically getting ripped off? Where was the team support? There was none. Mika, like many women don’t realize that she may be working with a team, that there may be common goals that they share, but that women in most work situations are not considered part of the team. So no, she wasn’t informed…she wasn’t “in the know” that she was making so much less. Everyone else knew – The only person left in the dark was Mika. It was the mens’ sneaky little secret.

This was just a typical conspiracy against women. When will women wake up and see this?

Mika: How about instead of blaming yourself, look at the situation, and assess it logically. “Hmm…I’m a woman and I just found out my male colleagues are getting paid way more than me. I’m a woman doing the same same job as a man and I’m getting paid less, much less than Joe and even much less than my male colleagues. I think this was a deliberate conspiracy to pay me less.”

But, no. Typical stupid woman – she blames herself. Here she had an opportunity to expose these men that cheated her out of the same same salary that they were getting. And she blames herself for not negotiating a better deal, and knowing her worth.

And then she writes this silly book. Just what is she saying through her book to all of those women out there in the workplace? Basically she’s saying., “This is a woman’s issue. It’s the woman’s fault.” She doesn’t have to say it but her meaning says everything: “It doesn’t have anything to do with men.”

Bull shit. It isn’t a woman’s issue of fault, or not knowing her value – This is men doing to women what they have been doing to women for years and years: conspiring against women and getting paid much more money for doing the same same job.

Think about this…if they were paying her that much less than Joe, and her male colleagues, just how much less do you think her female colleagues were getting?

No, it’s not about you girl – it’s about women. And you didn’t stand up for yourself and women. Like I said, this book is silly – it tells women nothing. Read it only if you want to be a victim and feel good about. Otherwise, don’t bother.

Mika is just a typical example of a stupid woman, not seeing her experience for what it really is: devious, disingenuous discrimination in the workplace…and instead blames herself.

Social Butterfly: I love seeing your moniker when I’m reading all the comments. Thanks for the mom’s day wishes – yes I am a mother to my beloved Lucy. :) It sounds like you have a lovely relationship with your mom too. Cool for you.

I had a fabulous time yesterday with my mother. First we visited my Grandmother. It was wonderful because she was in her bedroom, which is rare in the home she lives in so I got to have a private conversation with her – something that rarely happens. I cherished the moment and felt so lucky to see the sparkle in her eyes still. I miss the talks that we used to have.

Then my mother, her brother and his lady love (Doug stayed home with a cold :(), and I, went to the Ferry Building in SF and celebrated at Market Bar. It was so beautiful in San Francisco.

Oh, and your article was just sick.  Thanks for posting. I signed too.

Lara Logan tells her story

Well last night we were watching 60 minutes - Lara Logan who was “raped” in Egypt was telling her story of her brutal sexual assault for the first time.  Unfortunately we didn’t get to see it all because of the special broadcast of Bin Laden’s death interrupted many stations.

Here’s the write and the video of the segment is below.

Lara Logan Speaks Out About Assault In Egypt: ‘They Raped Me With Their Hands

CBS correspondent Lara Logan is speaking out for the first time since her brutal sexual assault in Egypt.

Logan was attacked by a mob near Cairo’s Tahrir Square on Feb. 11, the day that President Hosni Mubarak was finally driven from power. At the time, CBS News issued a statement saying that she “suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers.” Her attack reverberated around the world and highlighted the dangers of sexual assault and harassment that women face while reporting.

In interviews with “60 Minutes” and the New York Times which were released on Thursday, Logan described what happened when the mob surrounded her.

“Our camera battery went down, and we had to stop for a moment, and suddenly, Bahar [the Egyptian cameraman] looks at me and says, ‘we’ve got to get out of here,’” she told CBS’ Scott Pelley. “I thought, not only am I going to die here, but it’s going to be just a torturous death that’s going to go on forever and ever and ever.”

Logan told the Times that the attack lasted for 40 minutes and involved 200 to 300 men.

“For an extended period of time, they raped me with their hands,” she said. “My clothes were torn to pieces…what really struck me was how merciless they were. They really enjoyed my pain and suffering. It incited them to more violence.”

She said she wrote the statement disclosing what happened to her in Februrary because it “didn’t leave me to carry the burden alone, like my dirty little secret, something that I had to be ashamed of.”

The full interview with Logan will air on Sunday. She told the Times she does not intend to give any more interviews about the attack.

Click here if you can’t watch it.

Readers: It was very difficult to hold back my tears listening to Logan tell of her experience that dreadful night in Egypt. No matter how endemic harassment of women by men is in Egypt, as well as other places…no matter if men view this brutal behavior as completely “acceptable”, I will never understand, nor will I ever accept.

Men are sickening. This chronicle tells us exactly what men really think of women: Women are only there for their pleasure, or abuse, or whatever they deem at any given time. I am disgusted. There are no words to describe these feelings that I feel from the lack of respect, love, equality…for women.

What happened to Logan happens all of the time to other women. When will it end?

Blog me.

Racist Judges

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 30th April 2011

Shouldn’t that be an oxymoron?

Today I’m blogging a story about capital punishment, a man on death row.  But to me, I’m looking at the story on another level..a deeper level. What got this man to death row? To me it’s another unbelievable story of racism.

I know that I have been blogging a lot about racism lately. But hey, if it wasn’t so prevalent in this country, I wouldn’t have the need to blog about it, nor  fodder to report. Believe me, I would rather be blogging about things that make people happy….bring people joy, inspire a laugh or two…And I do. But sometimes a story that is being told, has got to be looked at in more ways than what is being reported. And this is one of them.

Although this story is about capital punishment, this is also a story about racism. A man, Abu-Jamal, who was found guilty of killing a police officer. The police officer was shot dead and Abu-Jamal, who was shot himself, was found laying next to him. The judge who convicted Abu-Jamal, was widely considered to be a racist. A racist judge.

Abu-Jamal was found guilty of his murder in a court case presided over by Judge Albert Sabo, who was widely considered to be a racist. In just one of too many painful examples, a court stenographer said in an affidavit that she heard Sabo say, in the courtroom antechamber, “I’m going to help them fry the n****r.”

If you ever think you’re having a bad day, consider being convicted of a crime by a racist judge and then spending the next 29 years of your life on death row. Tough enough? For the average person, yes. But Abu-Jamal is no average man.

Abu-Jamal, in spite of being convicted of a crime by a racist judge and living in solitary confinement for 29 years, he has continued his work as a journalist, with weekly radio commentaries that are broadcast from coast to coast. He is also the author of six books. Amazing yes? No doubt.

Here’s the write:

Capital punishment: America’s worst crime

Mumia Abu-Jamal has been on death row for 29 years. Now, a court rules his sentencing unconstitutional. When will we learn?

Mumia Abu-Jamal, a former Black Panther party member, has spent 29 years on death row, convicted for the 1981 killing of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner

The death penalty case of Mumia Abu-Jamal took a surprising turn this week, as a federal appeals court declared, for the second time, that Abu-Jamal’s death sentence was unconstitutional. The third US circuit court of appeals, in Philadelphia, found that the sentencing instructions the jury received, and the verdict form they had to use in the sentencing, were unclear. While the disputes surrounding Abu-Jamal’s guilt or innocence were not addressed, the case highlights inherent problems with the death penalty and the criminal justice system, especially the role played by race.

Early on 9 December 1981, Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner pulled over a car driven by William Cook, Abu-Jamal’s brother. What happened next is in dispute. Shots were fired, and both Officer Faulkner and Abu-Jamal were shot. Faulkner died, and Abu-Jamal was found guilty of his murder in a court case presided over by Judge Albert Sabo, who was widely considered to be a racist. In just one of too many painful examples, a court stenographer said in an affidavit that she heard Sabo say, in the courtroom antechamber, “I’m going to help them fry the n****r.”

This latest decision by the court of appeals relates directly to Sabo’s conduct of the sentencing phase of Abu-Jamal’s court case. The Pennsylvania supreme court is considering separate arguments surrounding whether or not Abu-Jamal received a fair trial at all. What the court of appeals unanimously found this week is that he did not receive a fair sentencing. Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams has decided to appeal the decision to the US supreme court, saying:

“The right thing for us to do is to ask the US supreme court to hear this and to make a ruling on it.”

As a result of this ruling, Abu-Jamal could get a new, full sentencing hearing, in court, before a jury. In such a hearing, the jury would be given clear instructions on how to decide between applying a sentence of life in prison as opposed to the death penalty – something the court found he did not receive back in 1982. At best, Abu-Jamal would be removed from the cruel confines of solitary confinement on Pennsylvania’s death row at SCI Greene. John Payton, director counsel of the NAACP legal defence fund, which is representing Abu-Jamal in court, said:

“This decision marks an important step forward in the struggle to correct the mistakes of an unfortunate chapter in Pennsylvania history … and helps to relegate the kind of unfairness on which this death sentence rested to the distant past.”

His other attorney, Judith Ritter, a law professor at Widener University school of law, told me: “This is extremely significant. It’s a life or death decision.” I asked her if she had spoken to Abu-Jamal yet, and she told me that the prison failed to approve her request for an emergency legal phone call. I was not surprised, given my many years of covering his case.

He has faced multiple obstacles as he has tried to have his voice heard. On 12 August 1999, as I was hosting Democracy Now!, Abu-Jamal called into our news hour, mid-broadcast, to be interviewed. As he began to speak, a prison guard yanked the phone out of the wall. Abu-Jamal called back a month later and recounted that:

“Another guard appeared at the cell hollering at the top of his lungs, ‘This call is terminated!’ I immediately called to the sergeant standing by and looking on and said, ‘Sergeant, where did this order come from?’ He shrugged his shoulders and said: ‘I don’t know. We just got a call to cut you off.’”

Abu-Jamal sued over the violation of his rights, and won.

Despite his solitary confinement, Abu-Jamal has continued his work as a journalist. His weekly radio commentaries are broadcast from coast to coast. He is the author of six books. He was recently invited to present to a conference on racial imprisonment at Princeton University. He said (through a cellphone held up to a microphone):

“Vast numbers of men, women and juveniles … populate the prison industrial complex here in America. As many of you know, the US, with barely 5% of the world’s population, imprisons 25% of the world’s prisoners … the numbers of imprisoned blacks here rivals and exceeds South Africa’s hated apartheid system during its height.”

The United States clings to the death penalty, alone in the industrialised world. In fact, it stands with China, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia and Yemen as the world’s most frequent executioners. This week’s decision in Mumia Abu-Jamal’s case stands as one more clear reason why the death penalty should be abolished.

Readers: So…yeah, we need to look at capital punishment. But in my opinion, we need to really look at those that have the power to put people behind bars. And those that have that power should not be racists.

That’s it for me today. It’s your turn. Blog me.

It’s not about his birth, it’s about his race

By Sherrilyn A. Ifill, Special to CNN
April 28, 2011 9:17 a.m. EDT

Baltimore, Maryland (CNN) — I will not click on the link to view the long form of President Obama’s birth certificate. I will not participate in this final humiliation — in the president’s reluctant acquiescence in this ongoing smear.

The release of the president’s long-form certificate proving his birth in Hawaii will not stop the attempts to discredit his leadership. The so-called “birther” movement veils a much more basic challenge to Obama’s legitimacy. And yes, that challenge has a great deal to do with his race.

This is not new. Black leaders always have had to prove their “legitimacy” and their allegiance to America. The way to smear the NAACP in the ’40s, and leaders like the Rev. Martin Luther King in the ’60s, was to suggest that they were Communists working against America.

Opinion: Conspiracy theories die hard

Thurgood Marshall spent a good portion of his confirmation hearing for a position on the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals refuting charges that he was a Communist. Frederick Douglass pushed President Lincoln to allow blacks to serve in the Union Army as a way of proving to whites that blacks were worthy of citizenship.

This ongoing challenge to our legitimacy is the reason that so many blacks from earlier generations were told by our parents that we had to be smarter, more well-mannered, more well-spoken and more circumspect than our white counterparts. We had to prove ourselves worthy of the respect of whites, and to do so required proof that we “belonged.” It’s among the great ironies of race in this country that when black leaders display these same qualities, they are accused of “elitism,” no matter how humble their origins.

Now, even the first black president has been compelled to present proof that he “belongs” in the White House. No Harvard degree, no Nobel Prize — not even the support of a majority of voters in this vast country is enough. More will always be required.

That’s why so many of us are disturbed by the president’s decision to give in and release the long-form document. We understand and respect that painful decision to try to refocus the country’s attention away from these absurd distractions and on to the critical problems we face. But we also know that his gesture will do little to quell the ongoing challenges to his authority from people who will never accept his leadership. It’s not about whether he was born in Hawaii. It’s the imposition of never-ending hurdles, and it’s motivated by the idea that racial minorities are “others” who must prove their right to have a real place in the leadership of American institutions.

Opinion: Will birther nonsense stop now?

It’s no surprise that Donald Trump, the quintessential example of bloated, egocentric American wealth and excess, has already moved on to questioning the grounds for President Obama’s admission to Harvard. No rational person doubts the intellectual gifts of the president. They’ve been on display for decades. It’s hard to imagine a movement demanding proof that President George W. Bush was admitted to Yale or to Harvard Business School on the basis of his academic performance. The point is not to question Obama’s intellect. The point is to suggest illegitimacy.

“I want to see the SAT scores,” Patrick Buchanan bellowed two years ago on “The Rachel Maddow Show.” He was referring to the nomination of Justice Sonia Sotomayor, then a sitting federal judge to the United States Supreme Court and the first Latina to be nominated to the court. These kinds of challenges should never be given credence. President Obama’s release of his long-form birth certificate is a sad reminder of just how imperfect our Union remains.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Sherrilyn Ifill.

Readers: I like Sherrilyn Ifill’s attitude. I wish I hadn’t posted Obama’s birth certificate yesterday which I copied from the article I posted from the Huff Po. Although I certainly didn’t post it to prove to my readers who may not believe our president is a citizen of the United States. Still…I wish I had the foresight, and just left it out.

I’ll end this write with a must see video that I found on the Huff Po this morning. (Anonymous: I think this is what your comment was refering to.) If you want to read the write that went with it click here.

The thoughts of The Onion‘s Baratunde Thurston, who basically just went off today when he heard what was happening. Of Trump’s birther binge, Thurston says, “It’s embarrassing to the entire nation that we would sit and let this happen. We have all been debased by this incident. By this charlatan, by this con man, by this mere promoter of himself.”

“No one has ever asked [Trump] to prove anything,” Thurston points out. That should change!

I’m heartbroken too. Thoughts? It’s Friday…start flapping.

Amelia: I can only say congratulations on getting your citizenship. And that I wish you would rethink your position with the republican party.

Carol: Yes. Educate, educate, educate…by continuing to slam it down their throats, relentlessly. That’s exactly what the republican party will do on FOX news etc. Do what Move.on suggests with their grassroots plan. It is a never ending fight because the republicans are ruthless.

Ila: Unbelievable. As if our youth doesn’t have enough problems with drugs and binge drinking. Anyway, not sure San Francisco had it pulled from our shelves. It seems our AG signed the same letter to Pabst Brewing Co., that Guam and others have. I found this article. Hafa Adai.

Lil B’s ‘I’m Gay’ Album Title Results In Death Threats

Rapper Lil B is coming out as a straight, gay man, and it’s costing him many of his hard-earned fans. Not that it bothers him.

The rising hip-hop MC and former member of The Pack announced earlier in April that he planned to name his upcoming album “I’m Gay,” despite not being a homosexual. For him, it’s a re-appropriation of the word, as well as a statement in support of the gay community.

“I’m very gay, but I love women. I’m not attracted to men in any way. I’ve never been attracted to a man in my life. But yes I am gay, I’m so happy. I’m a gay, heterosexual male,” he told MTV. “I got major love for the gay and lesbian community, and I just want to push less separation and that’s why I’m doing it.”

Even so, the album title has spawned a nasty backlash against him, as he said he’s “many of my supporters have turned on me,” and he gets messages from some saying “I’m gonna bash your head in,” “you fa**ot,” and ‘I’m gonna kill you.”

The Berkeley-based rapper said that he’s trying to break barriers in the hip-hop world; former MTV producer and hip-hop expert Terrence Dean recently wrote a book, titled “Hiding In Hip Hop: On The Down Low in the Entertainment Industry From Music to Hollywood,” about being a gay member of the rap community and the hurdles that those involved still need to overcome in a column for HelloBeautiful.com.

“Hip Hop is a culture and environment which does not provide a safe place for an artist to come forward or to come out,” he wrote. “If you listen to many rap lyrics they promote hate and gay-bashing. It is an environment where the thug and gangster mentality is prevalent. Artists boast of a hyper-masculine bravado, with their crotch-grabbing, degradation of women, and their braggadocios lyrical slaying about the number of women they’ve slept with and children they’ve produced.”

It’s those type of examples that Lil B said he’s trying to fight against.

“One-hundred years later, people gonna thank me, because people are going to be free. And that’s the main thing. Even if it’s 1 percent of the people that listen to me and are gonna be free, that’s better than none,” he said. “That’s better than not speaking up at all … and I spoke up and I did it.”
