Good morning!

Hanna Rosin: New data on the rise of women

Hanna Rosin reviews startling new data that shows women actually surpassing men in several important measures, such as college graduation rates. Do these trends, both US-centric and global, signal the “end of men”? Probably not — but they point toward an important societal shift worth deep discussion.

-TedWomen

Why you should listen to Hanna

Hanna Rosin is the sort of journalist who dares to articulate what people are thinking – only they hadn’t realized it yet. Born in Israel and raised in Queens, the co-founder of women’s site DoubleX (an offshoot of Slate) and contributing editor at the Atlantic Monthly is probably best known for the furor raised by her article titled (not by her) “The End of Men”—which asserts that the era of male dominance has come to an end as women gain power in the postindustrial economy. A similar furor greeted her well-researched piece “The Case Against Breastfeeding,” which questioned the degree to which scienti?c evidence supports breast-feeding’s touted bene?ts.

Rosin has covered religion and politics for the Washington Post and contributes to such publications as the New Yorker and the New Republic. Her book God’s Harvard: A Christian College on a Mission to Save America peers into the inner workings of Patrick Henry College, a seven-year school for evangelical Christians aspiring to political and cultural in?uence.

“Rosin makes her most powerful argument when she looks, not at the current workforce, but at what is happening on America’s college and university campuses. There, she explains, “we can see with absolute clarity that in the coming decades the middle class will be dominated by women. “

Readers: Happy to hear that the articles have been interesting and enlightening, especially the article on China. Please make sure that you care enough and tell your friends. Thanks. :)

Veda: Thanks for reading, and getting it.

Jamie: Thank you. And not only listen, but act and be an example for others to follow.

Zen Lill: It’s more than a bummer. And it’s going to be a lot more of a bummer if we continue to be this way.

In regards to your post, I’ve seen this video before, and I love the Dove ads about “real people”. It should be seen by all young girls. Photoshop can make anyone look beautiful, and even more beautiful. I love it when actresses come out after a photo shoot has been printed, and exclaim, “That’s not my __________!” (butt, legs, whatever. You fill in the blank.) The editors of magazines, etc., take way to much creative license and dictate way too much to the public what is “beautiful”. Not to mention the affect it has on the young girls, wanna be models, that you are speaking of.

Peace out.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. You said it. The repetition of what is suppose to be “beautiful” by the media or be honest men is way too much influential to the public. If only we as the public would take back our control.

My man is the old “ball and chain.” He has always wanted to know where I am going or been. But he goes and does what he pleases.

I told him last night that that shit was over. We had a big fight and he stormed out. I took that opportunity to begin his training. I left too. So when he returned the next morning and I wasn’t there he celled me and I told him that I was angry too so i left after he did.

He asked me where I was, I answered him with “where the fuck did you go?”

I got no argument this time. He told me calmly and then asked me again where I was. I told him I was at my sister’s and I would be home when I got there.

My sister who was listening to the new me was stunned. I mean stunned! She just looked at me and said, “You talked to Ralph that way?” I said, “I do now!”

She hugged me and said, “Don(her husband) says Ralph is always bragging about how he is the master of his castle and he accuses me of being a shrew because I don’t take the shit he says Ralph puts you through.

Then she smiled and asked. “Did Michelle help?” I laughed and said yes, including the disguised comments you have made from time to time on her blog.”

Michelle, I thank you both for waking me up. Now together let’s wake up a few more of our sleeping sisters.

    Sharon

  3. Elle Says:

Michelle you really nailed it today. Men are the ones who tell us women what we have to look like to be beautiful, day in and day out. But we rarely have beauty standards set for men. Hence, women will select and be happy with just about any man.

Men on the other hand want only the women portrayed as the beauty standard set by those editors. Hence, we women are constantly trying to adhere to that standard.

I am tired of that. I am getting off that wagon.

    Elle

  4. Ursla Says:

My man is a ball and chain. Taking care of him slows me down. I have to worry about his needs before mine most of the time. I can go without a clean this or that but he has to have clean things that need my immediate attention or he cannot function.

    Phew!

    Ursla

  5. Margarieta Says:

My man is a ball and chain. His macho act is getting tiring. Most of the women in my latino community accept this behavior from their men. I find it appalling. I returned to my roots to find a husband. But I am not satisfied.

I have dated many different races. I have to be honest from my experience, the latino men are the most difficult to reach when it comes to being treated as equals. They have their macho pride to point to.

Latino men have set this standard that other latino men should follow. If a man is treating his woman as an equal, he has lost his “machismo.” So women are supposed to allow him to boss her around.

When I refused, my husband said that he could tolerate my behavior in private, but if I mouthed off at him in public especially around his buds, he would be forced to shut me up.

I admit I was stupid enough to allow him to get away with that behavior. But reading your blog has opened my eyes to the fact that this just continues the chain of misery for other women.

I no longer will allow my man to order me around in public whether his “buds” are with him or not. Other women with their men will see that they don’t have to shut up and let their men be the last word in everything.

    Thanks Michelle

  6. Maria Says:

    Margarieta;

Your experience is so like mine. My boyfriend used to say the same thing. “Don’t mouth me in public.” We women sit around and allow our men to act as if they are the bosses of us to keep them from losing face.

What does that say about what they think about our feelings? I mean it is okay for us women to be looking at each other and accepting the fact that we are willing to be something owned by a man.

No more for me. My mother says that your blog is full of men hating women. I say my mother is full of shit. She has given men every courtesy all her life and look where it has gotten her.

Dad left her for a younger woman after 23 years of marriage. She spends all her time in one beauty parlor or the next trying to look younger. She allows him to come by and be with us as if his behavior was okay.

The woman has no self respect. That is what sitting around and allowing the latino man to pretend that he is the boss in front of the other assholes he calls buds.

My advice to latino women is don’t buy your man’s bull shit. Speak up. Be a free human being. I do now.

Thanks Michelle for being true to your beliefs. I love your blog.

    Maria

  7. Imo Says:

I am asian and I will tell you that Latino men have nothing on asian men when it comes to forcing women into submissive roles. I have lived it all my life. My father, brothers, cousins and friends, as males they expect to be given difference on matters involving judgment between men and women.

I hate it and I have always hated it.

    Imo

  8. Lawrence Says:

    Zen Lill

I saw that link. That’s why I like my women with as little make up as possible.

  9. Claire Says:

Michelle, I’m a model and I can tell you the business can make a girl cry a lot. You get told by men that your tits are too small, too big, not firm enough, you face is too narrow, too wide, just not right(they don’t know why, but it is just not right) something is wrong with it, too much cheek not enough cheek to work with. On and on and on.

I cry so much that I would quit if it wasn’t for all the money they pay me. The rest of the time I am aware of time being my enemy. So I have to fine a rich husband while I am in demand. I am only 23.

Two months back someone passed your blog link around as something to help a girl to cope. I laugh at the jokes and comments. But I cry when I read some of your articles.

Tonight, I am having Champagne and toasting my new job. When the cover comes out I will send you a copy. Potete avete letto l’italiano?

    Claire

  10. Hera Says:

Greek men are just as bad as any latino man. They scream and beat their women without too much fear from the law. My mother is a good catholic woman who has obeyed my father as if he were her father her entire marriage.

My husband is always complaining about something. He needs me to find anything he misplaces because he is helpless to himself. I have to dress him when we go out because he is tasteless when it comes to dressing himself, but for some reason he thinks he is an expert on how women should look in public.

    Hera

  11. Zen Lill Says:

Hi Mischa, one that stands out is Kate Winslet who said ‘my legs are not that thin’ I loved it. I’d heard of teh Dove thing but this viewing by my sweet offspring and I happened bc a pal showed us pics of her on the red carpet, my kid blurted ‘wow that’s you?!’ oh, out of the mouths of babes : ) my friend and I both cracked up…thus the video, the part that blew me away was that the woman in the vid is attractive as is and then when they slimmed her neck, face and lifted her eyes I thought, whoa…! It reminded me – once I was asked to model for a make up artist and before I could tell the person who took me out of the line (I really wanted to see the show not be in it) that my eyes are hyper sensitive to light I was being yelled at by the ‘master’ himself bc my eyes kept watering…and watering, it was embarassing and I can only tell you that the end result was just astonishing, I looked like the tallest Asian woman on the continent, I have never been able to repeat that almond eyed look…ah well…the master hated me but then – I hated him more.

Lawrence, I totally get that. Most women who love themselves wear only enough to enhance what they’ve got. Looking good is great though when you love yourself it’s an aside, I’m glad others think I’m pretty but it isn’t a dealbreaker to me if they do or don’t, very comfortable in my own skin…I can always tell women who are no matter how outwardly attractive (or not) others think they are.

I would suggest that women get more picky about how their males look, or at least how they take care of what they’ve got, health/body etc…and what is up with really attractive well dressed women out with males who wear a hat backwards and shorts and t’s, huh? She’s dolled up and you look like something the cat dragged in? Why?

I’ll get into my ‘swinging pendulum’ theory another time, the short version, whenever anything changes (in this case, this woman’s TED take on women and where things are headed) for a time, they usually swing the opposite way until an equilibrium is found, I liked that she mentioned her own sitch, has a hubby/father and the way many men are quite threatened and will need to find their equilibrium also (unless they just want to get offed : ).

I’m pretty upfront with males, we will either enhance each others lives or we will part ways fairly quickly bc I am perfectly fine on my own, I’m an excellent solo flier so, my only suggestion (not that you asked for one…!) is to ask for what you want in an effective way (could be very different for all the different types of men there are) that will get through. I believe we all have the right to want what we want whatever that want is, if you don’t ask for it and make it your own priority to get it, oh no – no man will ever make it his priority to give it to you. The catch is, you must know what you want and that sometimes is easier said than done. I know what I want now but it is my perogative to change my mind and want something else at a later date. and though I could not ever see me being married again, I never say never about anything anymore, I know better.

    Still raining…still loving it…!

    Luv, Zen Lill

Pet Health Insurance Can Be a Good Buy

    Lee Rosenberg, CFP
    ARS Financial Services, Inc.

Pet health insurance can be a good buy if your animal is predisposed to certain conditions and the insurer will cover those conditions. Example: Dachshunds often develop herniated discs. Insurance also should cover trauma, in case a pet breaks a leg or is hit by a car.

Treatment can cost thousands of dollars without insurance. Pet insurance usually costs about $1.50 a day. Read policies very carefully because many limit what they cover and restrict how much they will pay even for covered events. Providers include Purina, the ASPCA, Hartville Pet Insurance and others.

The company you choose should be licensed in your state so that you are not left with unpaid bills if the company folds.
