Recognizing “Elliot”
Posted by Michelle Moquin on December 23rd, 2010
Good morning!
You all remember my good friend Elliot? You might remember that I blogged about Elliot and the film noir shows that he curated at the Roxie, these past two years. If you got the chance to see any of his shows you know how fabulous they were…If you didn’t…well you definitely missed out, especially if you are a big film noir fan.
Well…Elliot was just awarded the Marlon Riggs Award from the San Francisco Film Critics Circle for his two decades of film programming! Isn’t that cool? And he didn’t even know that he was nominated – it was a total surprise. How delightful is that?! A big congratulations to Elliot!
Here’s the write:
‘Social Network’ Tops San Francisco Film Critics Circle Awards
The San Francisco Film Critics Circle voted The Social Network as Best Picture last night in its annual members’ meeting, echoing the choices of other critics groups, including those of New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Toronto and Washington, D.C., as well as New York Film Critics Online and the National Board of Review. Its Best Director award went to both ‘Social Network’s’ David Fincher and Black Swan’sDarren Aronofsky.
An award unique to the San Francisco Film Critics Circle, its Marlon Riggs Award, which celebrates an individual or organization offering courage and vision to the Bay Area film community, went to longtime programmer Elliot Lavine, whose work in programming venues, including the oft-embattled and recently renewed Roxie, has entertained and amazed audiences. Wrote the SFFCC, the award honored Lavine’s “two decades of film programming, his revival of rare archival and independent titles and his role in the renewed popularity of film noir and pre-Production Code features.”
Another feature with Bay Area roots, The Tillman Story, from Berkeley-raised Amir Bar-Lev, won Best Documentary. The group described the film as “a Bay Area tragedy thrown onto a national stage as Army Ranger Pat Tillman’s family fought for the truth about his combat death.”
The King’s Speech star, Colin Firth, won for second time from SFFCC in the Best Actor category (last year’s effort was A Single Man). Michelle Williams won Best Actress for her performance in Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine. What SFFCC described as “two noir-ish turns” received supporting awards: John Hawkes as Best Supporting Actor in Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone and Jacki Weaver as Best Supporting Actress in David Michôd Animal Kingdom.
Best Original Screenplay went to David Seidler for The King’s Speech, a British period piece detailing the role of speech therapy in launching King George VI’s reign. Best Cinematography honors went to Matthew Libatique for what was described as “his colorfully dynamic photography of Black Swan.”
More at these awards at SFFCC.

Anonz:
I hope you are reading this. I am a student in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan. WE girls are being threatened with disfigurement or death if we continue to seek higher education.
Because of Michelle’s blog it is well known about your love for Nia. We are not Nia, but we could use your help. The Americans try but they have their hands full with the war.
Could you PLease come to Marzar-e-Sharif and help us? I am asking you because the men here will feel more comfortable working with a man rather than Madaline.
We need to have our men relatives taught how to defend against the strategies being used by the evil men here to prevent us from obtaining a education. The men want to help, but to work with a woman would be too much for them to handle right now.
Please say you will help. We will be monitoring this site every day.

An old rancher died, leaving everything to his devoted wife, she decided to advertise for a ranch hand. Only two men applied. One was gay and the other a drunk. She thought about it and hired the gay guy, figuring it would be safer to have him around.
He proved to be a hard worker who put in long hours and knew a lot about ranching, To reward his good work she let him have te night off to go into town for some fun.
Later that night he returned to the ranch house. Halfway to his room, he saw the woman standing beside the fireplace, a glass of wine in her hand. She called him over.
“Unbutton my blouse and take it off.” she ordered. Trembling, he did so.
“Now take off my boots,” she said.
“Now my socks.” The hired man complied.
“Now take off my shirt.” He unzipped it.
“Now take off my bra.” He did as he was told.
“Now take off my panties.” He slowly pulled them down.
She fixed him with a determined gaze and said, “If you ever wear my clothes into town again, “you’re fired.”

Michelle, I have attended a few of Elliot’s presentations. But I have yet to see you there. I enjoyed myself each time. But, frankly, it was the possibility of admiring you that got me out.

Home Sharing May Allow Seniors to Stay in Their Homes
Janet Witkin
Alternative Living for the Aging
Home sharing may allow seniors to stay in their homes. Some seniors offer a spare room rent-free to a younger person in exchange for cooking and light housecleaning.
Others charge rent and expect no services but feel more comfortable knowing that a younger person is nearby in case of an emergency. Younger people benefit because these arrangements tend to cost less than living in a rented apartment.
Bottom Line/Personal interviewed Janet Witkin, executive director, Alternative Living for the Aging, West Hollywood, California, which has matched more than 7,800 seniors with roommates. http://www.alternativeliving.org

Elliot:
I was doing my last minute Christmas shopping. But I wanted to say congratulations. I have attended several of your film noir shows. They have allowed me to introduce my children to what I enjoyed when I was younger -:).
You have wonderful taste. The award couldn’t be more deserving.

Elliot:
I am Lowe’s significant other. Forgive the manners of an old gay queen. We both enjoyed your selections. There were many lively alcohol induced discussions afterwards in our homes.
Thank you for providing us with some memorable moments.
