In The Midst Of Chaos And Confusion…

…a couple kisses

Good morning!

I thought this would put a smile on for Saturday.

Vancouver Riots 2011: Couple Kisses During Chaos

While a city burned its Stanley Cup dream in the flurry of flames, looting and bone-breaking that was the 2011 Vancouver riots, an altogether different sort of passion spilled, literally, into the streets.

At the moment, they’re known only as the kissing couple.

But that won’t last long.

When this unlikely snapshot of lovers entangled on a tear-gas filled street, with riot police in the fore and background emerged Thursday morning, you can bet the great media race was on.

It will, most certainly, be the picture that launched a thousand media inquiries. Who are they? What were they thinking? And who will get to them first?

“We’re looking for the kissing couple in this photo,” CBC News tweeted at 10am Thursday “Know them?”

Good start. After all, the Twitterverse, as usual, caught the image on the quick.

Looks like Gerrard Trojillo (gt23GOTHUNDER) was first on the mark, tweeting, “lol couple kissing during #canucksriot” at about 10 am on Thursday. He was referring to the Esquire blog that first published the photo.

The riots began after Vancouver’s Canucks lost the Stanley Cup last night to the Boston Bruins.

The Vancouver Sun has more on the photographer who snapped the picture.

And the kissing couple has been identified:

CBC — The mystery identity of the couple kissing while lying on a Vancouver street as riot police battled crowds following the Canucks’ Stanley Cup loss has been revealed as Australian Scott Jones and his Canadian girlfriend Alex Thomas.

Jones’s family in the Land Down Under said he has been in Canada for six months, working as a bartender and trying to break into acting and standup comedy. At least one of his comedy routines has been posted on YouTube.

Following the Canucks’ Game 7 loss to the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night, images of the kissing couple were splashed around the world – notably in Australia after the family came forward as knowing the man caught in a passionate embrace with a woman on the street of the B.C. city.

Hannah Jones, Scott’s sister from Perth, told CBC News in an email that the man in the pictures is her 29-year-old brother, and he recently started dating Thomas, who attends the University of Guelph in Ontario.

And via Skype from Perth, their father, Brett, also confirmed that the pair are his son and his new girlfriend.
‘It’s just completely gone viral’

Brett Jones said the couple had been at the NHL final game, and after the frenzy following the loss spilled into the street, the two were caught in the violence.

“They were between the riot police and the rioters, and the riot police were actually charging forward, and Alex got knocked by a [police] shield and fell to the ground,” he told CBC News. “[Scott] was comforting her and gave her a kiss to say, ‘It’s going to be OK,’ and the photographer just took the shot at that moment.”

Brett Jones said Scott is fine, and Alex suffered a bruised leg from falling to the ground.

The two are overwhelmed by all the coverage the picture has gotten, he said, noting that he has been fielding calls from media around the world.

“They are both just totally stunned by it, actually.”

The dad of the now-famous bartender-standup comedian said Scott was in Vancouver on a work visa, and is leaving in a few days for the U.S., and then heading back to Australia.

But the image of Scott Jones and his girlfriend will likely forever be considered the one bright light in the Vancouver post-Stanley Cup frenzy.

“It’s just completely gone viral around the world,” his dad noted.

Cool New Stuff You Can Really Use

    Harry McCracken

Thousands of high-tech products are unveiled each year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Many are innovative and interesting, but only a few are products that the average consumer is likely to buy and use.

Here, some of the affordable items unveiled at this year’s show that serve a variety of pressing needs…

    SAFETY FIRST

Waterproof your portable electronics. DryCASE is a reusable vacuum-sealed plastic casing that not only protects electronics from rain, it even can keep them safe if they’re submerged in water.

Take your cell phone on a boat without worry. Or use your camera to snap pictures underwater — you can take clear photos right through DryCASE.

It has a headphone/microphone jack so that you can use a cell phone or an MP3 player without exposing it to the elements. Price: $39.99 to $59.99, depending on the size. 888-600-0379, http://www.DryCase.com.

Protect your digital documents. Computer users often are warned to back up their important files to an external hard drive — but that device could be destroyed, too, in a flood, fire or other disaster.

The ioSafe Rugged Portable hard drive, however, can withstand falls of up to 20 feet and immersion in water for up to three days.

Another model, the ioSafe Solo, can survive fires as well. Price: $149 for the 250GB Rugged Portable… $199 for the one-terabyte (TB) ioSafe Solo. 888-984-6723, http://www.IOSafe.com.

    WATCHES THAT WATCH

Log your jogs. The Nike+ SportsWatch GPS uses satellites to track how far you jog or walk. It also records your speed, calories burned and heart rate.

This information can be reviewed on the SportsWatch’s screen or loaded onto a Nike Web site to track your progress. Price: $199. 800-806-6453, http://www.Nike.com.

Know where they go. Keeping tabs on an elderly and/or disoriented loved one? The Laipac S-911 Bracelet Locator wristwatch has GPS capabilities so that you can find its wearer using on-line software. You even can arrange to get a text message or e-mail if the wearer leaves a preset area.

The S-911 has a cell phone with an SOS button so that the wearer can call for help and you can call the wearer. Price: $495 plus a $39.95 or $59.95 monthly service fee, depending on services. 888-511-7140, http://www.Laipac.com.

    COPY RIGHT

Keep a copy shop in your wallet. PlanOn’s SlimScan SS100 is a high-resolution color scanner that is about as long and wide as a credit card and as thick as three credit cards.

It can be used to scan receipts…a driver’s license and insurance documents after a traffic accident…a recipe off a friend’s recipe card…or interesting pictures or patterns for scrapbooking.

It features a small LCD screen and can be connected to a computer to save, e-mail or print out scans. It is encased in stainless steel for durability. Price: $119.99. 888-507-3926, http://PlanOn.com/slimscan.php.

ScanSnap fits in your briefcase. Fujitsu’s ScanSnap S1100 won’t fit in your wallet like the SlimScan, but it is small and light enough — just 12.3 ounces — to fit comfortably into a purse, briefcase or laptop computer bag.

The ScanSnap works only when attached to a computer by a USB cable, so it makes most sense for those who carry a laptop.

Unlike the SlimScan, the ScanSnap can very quickly scan full-page documents and save them as Word or Excel files. Price: $199. 888-385-4878, http://www.Fujitsu.com.

    TECH FOR YOUR CAR

Connect your car. At this year’s show, General Motors announced that OnStar finally will be available for non-GM vehicles, hidden in special aftermarket rearview mirrors.

The OnStar service, which has been available on GM vehicles since 1996, offers drivers directions and emergency roadside aid from a real person at the touch of a button.

It also detects vehicle impacts and summons help when an incapacitated driver cannot. Due out: Summer at Best Buy stores. Price: $374.99, plus $75 to $100 for installation. Service plans start at $199 per year. 888-466-7827, http://www.OnStar.com.

Never forget your cell phone. Bringrr plugs into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter or power port and sounds an alarm when the car starts up and the cell phone is not inside.

Bringrr is not the first device to do this, but it’s less than half the price of similar, earlier products. It works only with Bluetooth-enabled phones. Price: $34.95. 888-944-8222, http://www.Bringrr.com.

Alternative: If you don’t drive regularly, consider the Zomm, a device shown at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show, which attaches to a key chain and sounds an alarm if you leave without your cell phone whether you’re walking or driving — assuming that you remember your keys. Price: $99.99. 888-821-0888, http://Zomm.com.

    TECH FOR YOUR HEAD

Earbuds that actually fit your ears. Many people find the earphones called earbuds uncomfortable to wear, difficult to hear with and/or impossible to keep in place.

Sonomax’s Sculpted Eers solves all three problems by custom-fitting silicon earbuds to the buyer’s ear canal. The result is a secure, comfortable fit.

Also, the tight fit means less outside noise seeps in. The do-it-yourself silicone molding process takes just four minutes and is very safe. Due out: August. Price: $199.99 or $299.99, depending on model selected. 514-932-2674, http://SculptedEers.com.

A video camera you wear. Never miss an important moment with your video camera again. The tiny — less than one ounce — Looxcie is worn over the ear and automatically records everything that you see.

It’s a great way to record an infant’s first steps or a teenager’s best plays during a football game without holding up a video camera for hours waiting for these things to happen.

When you see something that you want to save, just tap a button and Looxcie will preserve the past 30 seconds of digital video. It can hold a total of five hours of video, with sound.

The Looxcie also serves as a Bluetooth headset and is designed to be paired with a smartphone, but it can be used without a smartphone as well.

Videos saved on the Looxcie can be saved on the smartphone or downloaded to a computer. Price: $199. 855-566-9243, http://www.Looxcie.com.

Personal interviewed Harry McCracken, founder and editor of Technologizer, whose Web site offers news and reviews of high-tech products, Internet sites and related topics.

He also writes the Technologizer column on Time’s Web site, http://www.Time.com. McCracken, previously editor-in-chief of PC World Magazine, has covered the consumer technology industry since 1991. http://www.Technologizer.com

  3. DSCC Says:

Republicans steamrolled into the House with empty promises of economic renewal. But instead they’ve chosen Big Oil over Medicare, health care companies over women’s rights, the rich over the middle class.

We’ve been able to stop them with our Democratic majority in the Senate. But if they capture just four of the 23 Democratic seats up for grabs in 2012, anything they dream up will sail through Congress while no progressive ideas survive.

  4. Mindi Says:

I got this from Huff post. I like it.
    =======================
Barack Obama To Tweet Personally Leading Up To 2012 Election

President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign could get a social media boost after some major changes announced today.

The big news: the president himself will be tweeting on occasion, according to TechCrunch. Each presidential tweet will be signed “-BO.”

To this point, Obama’s White House staff has been posting for him to @BarackObama. He’s joked in the past about having never tweeted (though he did technically tweet this), but that will soon change.

Also notable is that the President’s 2012 campaign staff will start managing his Twitter and Facebook accounts, effective immediately, rather than the White House staff.

The announcements were detailed in a blog post on Obama’s campaign website, which notes the re-election campaign is underway and Obama is “counting on all of us to lead this organization from the grassroots up.”

More frequent updates are expected too, per The Next Web. Obama for America vows to post “daily updates from the campaign trail, from Washington, and everywhere in between.” The group also asks for feedback and ideas on how to best utilize the Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Obama hasn’t sent a personal tweet yet, but his stream will indeed be one to watch. And Twitter could play a significant role this election season, as TechCrunch notes:

If the 2008 election was about Facebook, the 2012 election may also centralize around Twitter, which has more mass appeal than four years ago. Obama and his campaign are wise to start engaging constituents and citizens personally.

In fact, Republican candidates are already starting to throw punches and jabs over Twitter. The fact that Obama will now be actually Tweeting from the account will add a ton of value to his stream.

  6. AARP notice Says:

AARP has not changed its position on Social Security – period.

In fact, we’re fighting right now to stop Congress from cutting your Social Security and Medicare benefits as part of a deal to pay the nation’s bills. Instead of cutting the benefits you’ve earned, Congress should be cutting waste and closing tax loopholes.

We will be counting on activists like you to join us in sending a message to Congress: “Cut waste, not the Medicare and Social Security we’ve earned.”

Thank you for continuing to stand with us in our fight to stop Congress from making a political deal that could cut your Social Security and Medicare benefits.

For more information about how AARP wants to strengthen Social Security for future generations, see our press release below.

    Sincerely,

  7. Mark Says:

David Vitter, a US Senator, was caught using tax payers money to pay for hookers, yet no republican has asked him to resign.

Democrats, as gutless as they are have not asked him to resign. Yet they joined with the republicans to ask Anthony Weiner to resign.

So he resigned. Is there any wonder why the country is so fucked uP? Bad behavior in office only ends in lost of office if you are a democrat.

Michelle, you can see why Obama has his work cut out for him.

  8. From the Desk of Nancy Pelosi Says:

Keeping Food on the Table for American Families in Need

    June 17, 2011

Keeping Food on the Table for American Families in Need
Last night, I was proud to vote against an extreme Republican bill that takes food out of the mouths of children and seniors, increases the risk of food-borne illnesses, undercuts common sense financial regulations, and protects Wall Street speculators who are driving up gas prices.

The Republican Department of Agriculture funding bill makes drastic cuts to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children–commonly known as WIC–by $650 million, forcing them to turn away up to 350,000 low-income women and young children next year. Economists estimate that every $1 invested in WIC saves between $1.77 and $3.13 in health care costs in the first 60 days after an infant’s birth by reducing the instance of low-birth-weight babies and improving child immunization rates.

The bill also cuts the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), which provides critical assistance to low income seniors, by $37.5 million. Over 11,000 seniors in San Francisco currently depend on the CSFP and an estimated additional 2,000 seniors in San Francisco are eligible for the program, but are already not being served because of insufficient funding.

It is unthinkable that a nation committed to the future would say we cannot afford to feed our most vulnerable. The cost of these programs is significant—but very small compared to the tax breaks to the oil industry, or the cost of tax breaks to the wealthiest few—and a small price to pay for the health and the strength of our country as we go into the future.

Congresswoman Pelosi and HHS Secretary Seblius participate
in roundtable discussion at San Francisco General Hospital.

Touring San Francisco General Hospital with HHS Secretary Sebelius
Last weekend, I toured San Francisco General Hospital with Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and joined hospital officials, doctors, nurses, patients, and other key health care advocates to highlight the Partnership for Patients. Launched on April 12, 2011, the partnership will help save 60,000 lives by stopping millions of preventable injuries and complications in patient care over the next three years and has the potential to save up to $35 billion, including up to $10 billion for Medicare. Over the next ten years, it could reduce costs to Medicare by approximately $50 billion and result in billions more in Medicaid savings. The partnership is supported by a $1 billion investment made possible by the Affordable Care Act.

Expanding the Rights of our LGBT Families
The Obama administration announced new state guidelines last week to allow for increased protections for same-sex couples under Medicaid. These new guidelines grant states the option to afford partners in same-sex relationships protections previously only given to straight couples when one partner is receiving long-term care under Medicaid.

This is a significant step in the right direction, but inequalities under federal government programs will continue to persist until Congress has the votes to repeal the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act. Please be assured I will continue to fight for equality in our law and our society.

    Casework on Your Corner
Recently, my office was able to help a San Francisco high school student who required assistance with a passport issue in order to participate on an upcoming class trip to Mexico. Within a day we were able to correct a mistake that had him listed as a 50 year-old on a State Department Watch List and he was able to enjoy his trip with the rest of his classmates.

If you have a problem with a federal agency or obtaining your federal benefits, you can learn more about how my office can be of assistance to you at my website or by calling my office at 415.556.4862.

Please feel free to forward this information to your family and friends. To learn more about these efforts, to express your views, or to sign up for email updates, please visit my website. I am also on Twitter at http://twitter.com/NancyPelosi.

  9. AH Says:

    We are in 1879:

Wyatt Earp, deputy marshal of Dodge City, Kansas, has left the state and gone to Arizona. The reason, apparently, is that the brothels and saloons he ran with his brother James were no longer profitable.

Though Earp has been a lawman for three years, he and his brother-officer, Bat Masterson, sheriff of Cochise County, are known as “the Fighting Pimps.”

Earp collected money from practically all the brothels south of the railroad tracks dividing Dodge. He was part-owner of a saloon run by his brother James, whose wife organized the brothel end of the business.

His best-known piece of law-enfrocement was shooting a drunken cowpoke called George Hoyt, who was trying to gun him down. Hoyt probably wanted the bounty put on Earp’s head by Texan cattle-owners who suspected him of rustling!

  10. Robert Says:

Adam Gadahan, a spokesman for Osama bin Laden circulated a chilling new video Calling on “lone wolves” in the U.S. to buy assault rifles and carry out a wave of shootings.

Al Qaeda spokesman and possible successor to Osama bin Laden, Adam Gadahn, just circulated a chilling new video calling on “lone wolves” in the U.S. to buy assault rifles and carry out a wave of shootings.
Gadahn tells potential terrorists living in the United States to use the “golden opportunity” to exploit gaps in our gun laws and kill innocent people:

“You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle, without a background check, and most likely without having to show an identification card…What are you waiting for?”

Unfortunately, al Qaeda’s claim is correct – loopholes in our nation’s gun laws let dangerous people purchase firearms with no background checks and no questions asked.

It’s clear that America’s enemies are ready to exploit this gap in our national security. Regardless of how you feel about the broader debate on guns, there’s a clear need to take action right away and keep terrorists from getting their hands on assault weapons.
    =====================

So what was the republican party’s respond to this. The asked the NRA for more money because they would have to deal with people complaining about how easy they had made it for anyone to purchase a weapon.

Given that money, they petitioned youtube to take down the video showing Adam Gadahn encouraging “lone Wolves” to buy guns to kill Americans to prevent the democrats from using it to fight the republican gun laws.

Youtube agreed to take it down. so if you try the link – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJQTm43u16I&feature=player_embedded or

    Link – /mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/204572.php

What you will find is the result of a monopoly. Youtube has a monopoly on the video information. So for a fee, or political slant, they kill any video they don’t want to public to see.

Where would you go to see a video Youtube said it didn’t want to show you. Once again the white boy has you by the short hairs.

I have witnessed people being slaughtered, literally for not saying “Alahu Akbar” There are other religions in the world, Buddhism, Shinto, why is Islam the religion of hate and inhuman violence. All muslims ask urself why?Salam

I tried several videos saying it had the video but as you said it is being hidden from Americans that some ex american is telling possible american citizens to buy automatic weapons at their local gun shop and kill fellow Americans and the republican response to that is to get youtube to kill the video so that we can complain about how the republican party has made it too easy for a terrorist to buy a gun in America.

That would be your typical white logic.

I know the greed of some of the gun dealers in my neighborhood. They would not blink at selling one of those ragheads an automatic weapon if he paid cash.

I saw this on hufpost //////WASHINGTON — The Obama administration says it’s taking “seriously” a statement from an al Qaeda spokesman that instructs sympathizers of the terrorist group to exploit soft spots in U.S. gun laws.

You can not see it all. Youtube does what it has been paid to do. it stops it mid way. But you can still get the gist of the message.

The gun laws in this country are way too stupid. I have owned guns all my life. That doesn’t mean I want the gun laws to be so lenient as to make it easy for any nut or terrorist to get one.

    John

Last week, Adam Gadahn, an American-born spokesman for al Qaeda, released a video informing followers that, “America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms” and urging them to exploit what is commonly known as the gun show loophole.

“You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle without a background check and, most likely, without having to show an identification card,” Gadahn added. “So what are you waiting for?”

The remarks alarmed gun control advocates, who have warned for years that lax background checks at gun shows provided the easiest of vehicles for terrorists (foreign or domestic) to get their hands on firearms. That al Qaeda’s awareness of the so-called loophole was getting scant attention in the press raised concerns further.

Asked for comment on Monday by The Huffington Post, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney acknowledged that he was “not aware of [Gadhan's] statement,” before adding that members of the administration were “very mindful of any threats emanating from al Qaeda and take them seriously.”

A gun rights advocate who has worked alongside the administration said that the president’s team had both seen Gadahn’s remarks and was aware of the concerns stemming from them.

    Solar-powered sex

If you’re looking to bring some fire back to your sex life, there may be no better source of all-natural heat than the sun.

I’m not being cute… there’s emerging evidence that the sun may help improve testosterone levels in men–boosting not only the desire, but also the ability.

Austrian researchers found what appears to be a link between vitamin D production and testosterone. In a study of 2,299 men published in Clinical Endocrinology, the researchers found that men with the most vitamin D also had the most testosterone.

Not only that, but the two hormones–yes, vitamin D is a hormone–rose and fell together with the seasons, peaking in August and bottoming out in March.

In other words, all the sex drugs in the world may not be as effective as something that’s literally out of this world.

That’s something to celebrate… because sex drugs are a mistake. I’ve told you before about some of the problems with these meds: headaches, vision problems, hearing loss, difficulty breathing and–of course–those notorious and painful prolonged erections.

Those drug-inducted erections that just won’t go away are called priapisms, and require a trip to the emergency room. Needles and even scalpels are often involved in the treatment–trust me, it’s a risk you don’t want to even think about, much less take.

Especially not when you have other options.

If you’re already fairly robust–congratulations. You’re most of the way there. If you find you need a boost to get things working the way they used to, get some sun and eat more food with zinc. If you still need some help, see a natural doctor about testosterone injections.

If you’re out of shape, you have a little more work to do. Sorry, but there’s no magic pill–you’ll need to eat better and get yourself moving again before your sex life is really ready for a comeback.

But once you get healthy, you’ll be surprised at how many parts start working better… including your manhood.

As I told you just a few weeks ago, sex doesn’t just feel good. It has real health benefits, too. Men who have sex more often even have a lower risk for heart attack and heart disease.

So whether it takes a little more time in the sun or some extra work getting yourself back into shape, get it done so you can get back to doing it.

  15. Q&A Says:

Q: Is there a breathing technique that can ease asthma symptoms?
A: The Papworth method, created in the 1960s at Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire, England, can help anyone who starts breathing rapidly and shallowly because of anxiety. It had not been studied in asthma patients until recently. It has now been shown to cut asthma symptoms by one-third, but it does not improve lung function or replace medications. This form of physical therapy integrates breathing and relaxation exercises to discourage shallow breaths while focusing on slow nasal expiration using the abdomen and diaphragm. It teaches patients to recognize stress and use breathing to physically manage that stress. Ask your doctor for a referral to a respiratory therapist who teaches the technique.

    Joel,
Have you not read even one of my comments?
I have been touting vitey D forever here and exercise, did I need to say ‘it’ll make your cock hard’ rather than telling you that vitey D boosts hormone activity?
Sheesh…that and I bet you missed my L-argenine cocktail, too.
You’re being a lazy reader or you need to read it with some snappy little headline like ‘solar powered sex’
Pay attention and don’t be a lazy reader. I’ll forgive you if you tell me you’re a newbie here.
