Just Noticing: “Observations Of A Blogger”

Good morning!

“Just noticing…”

…The talk here and around the country is that the republicans will try to steal the election. They have even admitted that they will do so in so many words, and yet not much has been on the news and not much is being done about it.

Here’s something you can do. This was sent to me from a good friend, so I am passing it along. Do something…sign please. Thank you.

Don’t let Republicans steal the election in Florida

Florida is at it again. It’s the scene of the crime where Secretary of State Katherine Harris helped Republicans steal the 2000 presidential election for George Bush. But now it’s Governor Rick Scott who is trying to steal the election for Mitt Romney.

Earlier this summer, taking a page straight out of Katherine Harris’ playbook, the Florida governor deployed a massive and systematic effort to purge up to 182,000 voters from the state’s voting rolls.

Thanks to your activism and that of many others, we were able to generate massive public pressure, and the Department of Justice issued a challenge to the purge. However, Gov. Scott threatened to defy the DOJ. It was Florida’s county election supervisors, a group that included 30 Republicans, who emboldened by public support refused to go along with Gov. Scott’s plan to steal the election.1

But as it becomes clear that a win by Mitt Romney in Florida could decide the state’s 29 electoral votes and the presidential election, Gov. Scott restarted his purge of registered voters. We have to act now to ensure the county supervisors of election once again block Gov. Scott’s voter suppression scheme.

Tell Florida’s county supervisors of elections: Don’t allow Gov. Rick Scott to purge eligible citizens from the voting rolls. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

The Florida county supervisors of elections stood up and did the right thing this past June when they stopped Scott’s voting purge by refusing to use his “unreliable data” to purge their county’s voting rolls.2 We need them to stand up again.

What is happening in Florida is the same old story of Republicans using the irrational fear of “voter fraud” as cover while they work to disenfranchise eligible voters. The truth is, voter fraud is exceedingly rare. More Americans are struck by lightning than commit voter fraud. As noted by legal scholar Jeffrey Toobin:

As many independent studies have found, “voter fraud” is a cure in search of a disease. There is no significant voter-fraud problem in the United States. Rather, these laws are transparent attempts by Republican majorities to stifle and suppress the number of minorities and poor people (mostly Democrats) who go to the polls.3

The real problem, the one that can affect the outcome of our elections if we’re not vigilant, is voter suppression. Which is exactly what Gov. Scott is trying to do, and it’s part of a large-scale Republican crusade to suppress participation by millions of voters in the 2012 presidential election.

We need as many Americans as possible to protest Gov. Scott’s latest scheme to disenfranchise voters. And we need to turn up the pressure now, before it’s too late.

Tell Florida’s county supervisors of elections: Don’t allow Gov. Rick Scott to purge eligible citizens from the voting rolls. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

Let’s make sure the election officials in Florida know that the whole country is watching, and we will hold them responsible for the integrity of their state’s election which could decide the next president of the United States. We will not stand by and let another illegitimate president be inaugurated because of a stolen election in Florida.

In 2000, Florida’s Secretary of State Katherine Harris provided the winning margin for George W. Bush by helping to “wrongfully” remove 7,000 Floridians – the overwhelming majority of whom were African Americans – from the voting rolls prior to the 2000 election.4We will not let Gov. Rick Scott repeat this feat in 2012. Florida’s county supervisors of elections have stopped him before. They have the power to stop him again.

Gov. Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama are locked in a tight election race which could very well be decided by Florida’s 29 electoral votes. We must take action now.

******

Readers: I used to think that signing these things didn’t do anything. But they do. What I do know is that it tells those that oppose that we are onto their slick tricks, and we’re going to keep fighting and being vigilant to prevent them from reaching their self-serving goals. I believe we have to continue to search for the truth, and every little thing we do matters.

Haley:  Awww..Nice…thank you!

    Michelle,

I wholeheartedly agree that we must use social media to have our voices heard and though it may seem a small futile step, it’s an important one. Standing up for what you believe in is the key and the only way people can make a difference. You can’t stand by idly and assume someone else will speak up. There’s power in numbers. I only need to look at how far we have come with LGBT rights to see that.

I wanted to sign your petition, but unless I am mistaken, the link doesn’t work, at least, I can’t click on anything that is reactive.

  2. Robert,RT Says:

Michelle you are so right on about this stealing elections by the republicans. Actually if it weren’t for the fact that the republican party has perfected the crime of stealing election it would not even be close in the houses or governor offices in any of the state or federal levels.

These criminals have turned the USA into a third world country controlled by manipulating the ballot box. If Obama gets election and he doesn’t initiate a full scale investigation into their tactics, his election will mean nothing because the republicans will control the rest of the country.

I am sending you a list of articles that you can publish to alert your readers to what is going on.

    IT IS MASSIVE!

I will email you a stunning list of articles that show that this is an organized criminal organization bent on taking over the USA at any cost.

I don’t want to take up too much of your blog but I want to put in this one article by Bob Fitrakis & Harvey Wasserman to give you and your readers an idea of what is at stake.

Four ways the Ohio GOP is already stealing the 2012 election
by Bob Fitrakis & Harvey Wasserman
    August 25, 2012

The Ohio Republican Party has moved four ways to steal America’s 2012 election. The Buckeye State is almost certain to emerge as a decider in this year’s presidential election, and the GOP is moving fast to ensure victory, no matter what it takes.

The strategy reflects much of what was done by the Republicans in 2000 and 2004 to steal those presidential elections for George W. Bush, as we report in the newly published WILL THE GOP STEAL AMERICA’S 2012 ELECTION? (now at http://www.harveywasserman.ning.com and at http://www.freepress.org).

If they get away with it, the Ohio GOP could make it virtually impossible for Barack Obama to carry Ohio this November. In the years since Florida 2000 and Ohio 2004, the Democratic Party has made little headway in reforming our electoral system to make such thefts impossible:

    1. Since 2009, the Ohio GOP has purged roughly a million citizens from the state’s voter rolls. This accounts for some 15% of the roughly 5.2 million votes counted for president in the state in 2008. The purge focusses on counties that are predominantly urban and Democratic.

    2. Electronic voting machines have been installed throughout the state which are owned, operated, programmed and maintained — and will be tallied — by Republican-connected firms.

    3. The GOP controls both houses of the Ohio Legislature, the governorship, the Secretary of State’s office, and the state Supreme Court. Soon after the 2008 election, it imposed a draconian photo ID law designed to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of suspected Democrats, as is being done throughout the US. But Ohio is a referendum state. A statewide grassroots movement recently crushed a GOP-pushed anti-labor law, and many Republicans feared the photo ID law would also go down. Then GOP stalwart Jon Husted (now the Secretary of State) was ruled ineligible to hold office over a residency conflict. Ohio’s Supreme Court re-instated his eligibility, but he was prompted to oppose the photo ID law. Today a prospective Ohio voter can use 17 different kinds of ID, but in recent elections some poll workers have demanded photo ID anyway. Without a grassroots army of independent election monitors to protect them, many more Ohioans are likely to be disenfranchised.

    4. In 2004, 10.6% of the votes cast in Ohio were so-called “early votes” via absentee ballots. A voter had to be absent from the county to vote absentee. In-person Election Day voters at the 42 predominantly black inner-city precincts in Columbus waited between 3-7 hours to vote.

In 2005, Ohio election law was modified so absentees could vote without actually being absent from their home county. When Ohio went for Barack Obama with 52% of the vote, early voting nearly tripled to 29.7%. This included voters able to vote in person at locations all over the state for 35 days prior to Election Day, including on weekends.

This summer the Ohio GOP attempted to allow Republican counties to use weekend voting, while denying the right to counties that are predominantly Democratic. By banning all voting the weekend before the election, Husted took credit for “leveling the playing field.” But African-American State Representative Charleta Tavares immediately charged that the exclusion of weekend voting represented a deliberate attempt to suppress Democratic voters, and particularly black voters who voted 95% for Obama in 2008.

On Friday, August 17, while some 500 Ohioans protested outside his office, Husted suspended Democratic Montgomery County (Dayton) Board of Election members Dennis Lieberman and Tom Ritchie, Sr. because they introduced and supported—and then refused to rescind—a motion for weekend voting.

Lieberman told the Dayton Daily News that, “I believe that this is so critical to our freedom in America . . . that I’m doing what I think is right, and I cannot vote to rescind this motion.” Lieberman also argued that the directive did not specifically prohibit weekend hours.

The Ohio Association of Election Officials, overwhelmingly dominated by Republicans from Ohio’s rural counties, endorsed the idea of cutting the final three early voting days. They argued that they needed the extra time over the weekend to prepare for Election Day, although some of the counties have very small voting populations compared to the nine urban counties that support keeping the three final early voting days. Doug Priesse, Chair of the Franklin County (Columbus) GOP, sparked a firestorm when he explained that “I guess I really actually feel we shouldn’t contort the voting process to accommodate the urban — read African-American — voter turnout machine.”

The Obama campaign has sued, arguing that weekend voting be restored for all Ohioans, as it has been for members of the military. The GOP has charged Obama with trying to deny those in the military their right to vote, which would be impossible for him to do. Husted and GOP Attorney-General Mike DeWine responded with a suit saying: “There is no fundamental right to in-person early voting.”

Under intense pressure, Husted has since re-instated the two Dayton Election Board members. But by purging registration lists, limiting voting times, messing with voter ID requirements and controlling electronic voting machines, the GOP has a huge leg up on winning what has often been America’s key swing state.

Clearly the Ohio GOP is once again geared up to deny the vote—and vote count—to as many Democrats as it can. If it succeeds, as it did in 2004, Barack Obama stands little chance of being re-elected.

Bob Fitrakis and Harvey Wasserman’s new WILL THE GOP STEAL AMERICA’S 2012 ELECTION?, introduced by Greg Palast, is a $4.99 e-book now at http://www.harveywasserman.ning.com and at http://www.freepress.org

  3. Dallas Says:

Will the GOP Steal America’s 2012 Election?”
    —-
Given the points outlined, it sure seems likely, if not inevitable. The GOP successfully stole the 2000, 2004 presidential elections, local elections, and most recently the Walker recall in Wisconsin. They got away with it before, why not do it again?

I suspect if not a single person voted for Romney, he’d still win – an exaggerated example, I know but in my opinion, that’s how blatantly corrupted this country’s whole election process has become.

As others have posted, the elections are a dog & pony show anyway–both so-called parties are controlled by the same MIC/financial elites – it’s all frayed window dressing barely covering the corporatist-totalitarian state we live under.

  4. Paul Says:

I agree with you Robert,RT about the failure of Obama to get tough with this gang of criminals, and their disgusting power grabs.

The Obama administration duty to defend the country form ALL foes both domestic and foreign has not been fulfilled. The domestic conspiracies are being neglected.

Trikes for Grown-Ups—These Three-Wheelers Are Fun

If you’d like to take up—or continue—bike riding but want a more comfortable experience, adult tricycles are a great alternative. The three wheels help make adult trikes more stable than bikes. Also, they have a low “step-through” design that makes mounting and dismounting easy…typically come with big tires that ensure a smooth ride…have ergonomic handlebars that are easy to reach and grip…and offer oversized seats (some even have backrests) for comfort and support.

There are dozens of styles and models to choose from. Best options…

    UPRIGHT TRIKES

    For short rides.
If you’re primarily interested in a leisurely ride around the neighborhood for pleasure, fitness or running errands, the Sun Traditional 24-inch trike is a comfy, practical and affordable bike.

It has an ultralow step-through design (15 ⅜ inches high) and comes with a vinyl-coated rear basket for trips to the market. Sold as a single-speed with hand brakes for around $375, it can be converted to a three- or five-speed version with coaster brakes using a kit for an additional $150 to $175. 305-238-1866, http://www.SunBicycles.com.

    For a power assist.
If you would like an occasional propulsion boost, the EW-88 Electric Tricycle is a hybrid trike with a 450-watt electric motor as well as pedals, so you can exercise when you want or sit back and let the trike do the work.

It recharges on a wall socket. On a full charge, it has an unassisted range of 18 to 25 miles. It also has a backrest and front and rear baskets. Maximum speed: 17 miles per hour (mph).

These bikes are legal on most roadways, and no license is needed to operate them. $1,199. 888-518-3588, http://www.ElectricWheelStore.com.

    RECUMBENT TRIKES

Recumbent trikes have pedals in front of you, allowing you to stretch out your legs horizontally, making for easier pedaling and faster, longer rides than with upright trikes.

    For greater control.
The TerraTrike Rover is a tadpole-style (two of the three wheels are in front rather than in back) recumbent trike that is available in one-, three- and eight-speed versions.

Both front wheels are used to steer, allowing for a tight turning radius. The nylon seat is 17 inches off the ground (about four inches higher than that of many tadpole trikes) for easier on and off. It can hold riders up to 400 pounds—much more than most trikes.

And if you want to ride with your spouse or a friend, the Rover easily can be converted into a tandem trike with an attachment sold separately. Price: $699 to $999, plus $899 for the two-rider attachment kit, which will be available by mid-August. 800-945-9910, http://www.Terratrike.com.

    For more speeds.
Fast, fun and comfortable, the Sun EZ-Tri Classic SX recumbent trike has 24 speeds, front and rear brakes and an adjustable cushion seat with a mesh seat back that sits 22 inches off the ground, making it simple to slip into. Price: Around $975. 305-238-1866, http://www.SunBicycles.com.

  7. Irene Says:

I agree with you Paul. The thing is everyone knows that the republicans are stealing elections but no one will say anything in the media and the Obama administration has not balls to stand up to them.

This may be the most inept bunch of defenders of the country from domestic criminals ever.

    Irene

  8. Jeremy Says:

People need to wake up to the fact that elections have been stolen and that this one coming up is particularly vulnerable.

If the dems don’t wake up then exactly what happened in florida 2000 and ohio 2004 will happen again in 2012.

  9. Carla Says:

Both Al Gore and John Kerry were legitimately elected president, but neither was willing to fight for us. When we broke many of the major stories on the theft of Ohio 2004, it was the Democrats who most fiercely attacked us.

  10. Kimberly Says:

There will be riots at the voting places this November if people who have always voted being denied the right to vote. We have to fight back against those forces who are trying to take away our voting rights.

It is becoming clearer and clearer to me everyday that the GOP are an organized crime family. Gangsters of politics though can be caught and sent to jail. Vote 2012 like your life depends on it because it does.

  11. Vivien Says:

I have always been registered to vote – ALWAYS! When I moved, I re-registered. Funny that when I checked my status online last week, there was no record of my being registered.

I prompty re-registered and printed out my receipt. This has never happened before, and I find it most peculiar that is occurs just a month before THIS election. If you haven’t checked your registration status, DO SO. NOW!

  12. Sarah Says:

This actually frightens me. I registered to vote, I thought I had at least until I checked the official list of registered voters only to find out that I wasn’t. I’m glad I checked else I would have had problems come November

  13. Riley Says:

Kimberly, I wouldn’t say there would be riots but people are not going to stand there and be disenfranchised as a lot of these Soccer Moms trolling these polling places are going to be in for a rude awaking of the reality these places ain’t like what the 11 o’clock news has been telling them for there whole adult lives.

Senator Leahy needs to get the message from as many Americans as possible that it’s not okay for Republican elections officials in Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio – or any other state — to engage in systematic effort to disenfranchise U.S. citizens for the explicit purpose of swinging the election to Republican Mitt Romney in November.

Appliance Repairs Anyone Can Do—Simple Steps Save $$$

Appliance repair people often charge $80 to $150 just to walk in your front door…and the average repair bill is well into the hundreds.
Sometimes this can’t be avoided—appliances have become extremely complex, putting many repairs outside the abilities of even handy home owners. But there are exceptions.

Five appliance problems that many home owners can tackle themselves, saving hundreds of dollars in the process…

    FRIDGE NOT COOL ENOUGH

If your refrigerator is no longer as cold inside as it should be, a broken or jammed condenser fan could be to blame.

    Step 1:
Make sure that the temperature control is not turned up too high by mistake. Then if you have a stand-alone (not built-in) refrigerator, pull it away from the wall to gain access to the back and remove the cover at the bottom rear.

(With a built-in fridge, the condenser fan often is on top rather than at the lower rear part of the fridge—but built-in refrigerators are so pricey and difficult to access that that is probably not a job for a do-it-yourselfer.)

    Step 2:
One of the components that you’ll find inside is the condenser fan. If you don’t see or hear the condenser fan working, put your hand on the compressor—that’s the cylindrical tank, usually black in color.

If the compressor is warm to the touch and vibrating slightly, that means the compressor is running—and when the compressor is running, the fan motor should be, too.

If the fan motor isn’t operating, a jammed or broken fan motor very likely is the problem.

Wait a half hour, and recheck to rule out the possibility that the fan isn’t operating simply because the fridge is in automatic defrost mode.

    Step 3:
Unplug the fridge, and try to spin the blades to see whether the fan spins freely. If it doesn’t, try to remove any obstructions. Then check whether the wires to the fan motor have come loose or have been nibbled by mice—mice occasionally are attracted by the warmth of the motor.

If the wires are loose, try to tighten the wires. If mice have chewed the wires or if neither of these is the problem, replace the fan motor. It is simple to install and usually costs less than $50, though some cost more.

    Step 4:
The easiest way to install a condenser fan motor is to first remove the entire fan assembly—including the motor, fan blades and bracket—from the refrigerator.

That typically means unscrewing three or four screws that hold the bracket in place and disconnecting two wires. You typically can remove the fan blade from the old motor simply by loosening a nut.

When you reinstall the assembly with the new motor attached, make sure that the spinning fan blades cannot contact the wires. Tape or strap the wires into a safe position if necessary.

    WASHER LEAVES CLOTHES TOO WET

If your front-load washer is not spinning clothes sufficiently dry, the problem might be a clogged drain line. Most, though not all, front-load washers have a trap in the drain line between the washing basin and the pump.

This trap can become clogged over time with lint or small items, making it difficult for water to drain from the basin. Front-load washers will not spin at full speed when water still is inside, so clothes do not get as dry as they should.

    Step 1:
If your front-load washer does have a drain-line trap, solving this problem is simple. Remove the cover from the trap—it likely looks like a small door on the lower front of your washer, but consult your manual for details.

    Step 2:
Open the trap, then remove anything you find inside. (Be ready with a towel and a bowl—some water typically comes out when this trap is opened.) This process should be explained in the owner’s manual—yet repairmen still get calls for this all the time.

    Alternative:
Out-of-balance loads of laundry are another potential cause of insufficient spin drying in a front-load washer. This can be solved by not over- or underloading the washer and by washing similar types of fabrics together—a single heavy, water-saturated towel or pair of denim jeans can throw a load of lightweight fabrics out of balance.

    WASHER IS SLOW TO FILL

If your top- or front-load washing machine fills with water very slowly or does not fill with enough water, the problem likely is a clogged screen in the water inlet valve—that’s the part on the back of the washer where the water intake hoses connect.

There are small screens inside this valve designed to block sediment in the water from getting into the washer. Over time, these screens can become clogged—particularly when well water is used.

    Step 1:
Shut off the water to the washing machine, unplug the machine and pull it away from the wall, then unscrew the hoses where they connect to the washer—be ready for a little water to come out when you do.

Aim these hoses into a bucket or a sink, and turn the water on very briefly to confirm that water pressure through the hoses is fine, then turn the water back off.

    Step 2:
Now look inside the washing machine through the holes where the hoses were connected. You should see small screens. Remove these, and clean them with an old toothbrush and water.

Soak them in a vinegar/water solution if the accumulated sediment won’t come off.

    Helpful:
If the screens are difficult to remove, use a pair of needle-nose pliers or a small flathead screwdriver to carefully work them loose. Be careful not to puncture the screens.

    Step 3:
After cleaning, put the screens back in place, tightly reattach the water hoses and turn the water back on. Watch to make sure that no water is dripping from the connections before pushing the washer back against the wall.

DRYER TAKES TOO LONG TO DRY CLOTHES

If your dryer consistently takes more than one cycle to dry clothes, you probably have an airflow problem. If you have already cleared out your dryer’s lint filter and the ductwork leading from the back of your dryer to the outside of your home, this air blockage could be underneath the lint filter.

    Step 1:
Pull out the filter, and use a flashlight to scan the area underneath it for lint or other obstructions. A small dryer vent brush (sometimes called a lint trap brush) can help you clean out anything you find—this area often is difficult to reach by hand. Dryer vent brushes are available for a few dollars in home centers and online.

    Step 2:
Check whether the lint filter is torn. If so, purchase a replacement filter through one of the online parts sellers mentioned below. Prices range from less than $10 to more than $50, depending on the dryer model.

    OVEN LACKS HEAT

If your electric oven is not heating well (or not heating at all)…

    Step 1:
Turn the oven off and unplug it, then open the oven door and look for the bake element—that’s the dark, tubular piece of metal located near the bottom of the oven’s interior.

(If you cannot easily unplug the oven, turn off the circuit breaker, then check that the oven is truly no longer powered—the bulb inside should not come on, for example—to be certain that you flipped the correct breaker.)

    Step 2:
Not all electric ovens have exposed bake elements, but if yours does, examine it closely. It should appear smooth. If yours is bubbling in places or cracked—or you noticed sparking from the bake element before you turned off the oven—it’s likely that replacing this element will fix your problem.

    Step 3:
Even when the bake element looks good, it still can be bad. You can test the element with an ohm meter or take it to an appliance-parts dealer to test it for you.

    Step 4:
Removing an exposed bake element is easy. There typically are two screws that must be removed and two wires that must be disconnected.

Then simply pull the element out through the front of the oven. Replacements usually cost $30 to $75.

If your oven does not have an exposed bake element, accessing the bake element can be difficult even for a professional and likely not a task for the average do-it-yourselfer.

  21. Ann Coulter Letter Says:

If one were trying to prove in court that MSNBC is crazily biased, you could do worse than submitting Rachel Maddow’s Tuesday night show.

She was discussing the recently released June 2007 tape of Barack Obama using Hillary Clinton’s black accent to tell an audience of black preachers that the U.S. government doesn’t care about black people, Maddow explained with her typical leaden sarcastic wit that the tape reveals Obama’s “secret plan to be way more black than he seems to you now.”

    San Francisco Leads the Way
    October 12, 2012

    San Francisco Leads the Way
When it comes to transportation, San Francisco always leads the way.

This week I joined partners and leaders from federal, state, and local government to celebrate our investments in the next phase of the Third Street-Central Subway line and the ground-breaking Presidio Parkway public private partnership.

For San Franciscans, the Central Subway project is a product of consensus – an effort to improve mobility, expand public transit, promote commerce, and bring our city closer together.

With today’s signing of the Full Funding Grant Agreement, we have secured $1 billion in federal funds for the subway, which will ensure better service and equal transportation access for Chinatown residents and serve as an economic engine for our city.

Replacing the aging and unsafe Doyle Drive with a new Presidio Parkway will provide safer roadways and shorter commute times to the 120,000 drivers and transit riders who cross Doyle Drive each day.

The project is the first in California to operate under a new innovative public-private partnership model. With nearly $130 million from the Recovery Act and $18 million from across the federal government, the project will use public investments to spur and stimulate the private sector; adding jobs and creating a better environment for business.

Congresswoman Pelosi joins State Senator Mark Leno, Mayor Ed Lee, Supervisor David Chiu, and other city leaders in signing the Full Funding Grant Agreement which secures $1 billion in federal funding for the next phase of the Third Street-Central Subway line.

    Celebrating our Diversity
During Latino Heritage month, we celebrate the dynamic and lasting contributions of the Hispanic community to our city, state and nation. On Tuesday, I was pleased to deliver remarks at the San Francisco Latino Heritage Month Celebration and Awards Ceremony.

The ceremony occurred just one day after President Obama came to California to announce the establishment of the César E. Chávez National Monument.

César Chávez dedicated his life to the cause of the common good, the movement for workers’ rights and civil rights, and the belief in fairness and opportunity for American Latinos and all Americans. It is a source of national pride that César Chávez will forever be honored with a national tribute.
