“Justice” or “Just Us”?

First of all I wanted to start my write this morning by saying that my thoughts go out to both families affected by the execution of Troy Davis.

Secondly, the real issue is allowing the police to get away with this, as it puts every OTW at risk of being framed for any crime. I mean if you can send an innocent man to death, without qualms or a thought of repercussions should you get caught, what would you do to anyone else?

Allowing this to happen, to put a man to death when there was so much doubt about his guilt and the fact that it was done on witness testimony only smacks of the barberic tactics of the countries we like to point out in the media that we are better than.

We have to question: “But are we any better? – Is our justice system better?” Well…from all that I keep reading and hearing about, we aren’t any better  - we are just as barbaric. However,  I believe that our justice system is better than most.  But…and this is a big BUT…when it comes to trying an OTW, then our Just-Us system kicks in and we are no better, if not worse than other countries.

This is a sad day as it  sets a very dangerous precedent for the OTW.

Troy Davis Executed: Controversially Convicted Inmate Maintains Innocence Until The End

JACKSON, Ga. — Troy Davis, convicted of murdering an off-duty Savannah police officer more than 20 years ago, held fast to his claims of innocence even as he was finally executed by lethal injection on Wednesday night.

Strapped to a gurney and minutes from death, Davis stated that he had not carried a gun the night of the murder and did not shoot the officer, Mark MacPhail, in a fast food restaurant parking lot on an August night in 1989.

Speaking directly to MacPhail’s brother and son, who witnessed the execution, Davis beseeched them to continue to examine the events that night. “All I can ask is that you look deep into this case so you can really find the truth,” he said.

Davis then addressed prison officials preparing to inject him with a lethal mix of chemicals. “May God have mercy on your souls,” he said.

The first injection began at 10:54 p.m. and Davis was declared dead at 11:08 p.m. Afterward, Davis’ attorneys and legal advocates quickly decried the execution as a terrible miscarriage of justice.

“I had the unfortunate opportunity tonight to witness a tragedy, to witness Georgia execute an innocent man,” Jason Ewart, one of Davis’ attorneys, said outside the prison. “The innocent have no enemy but time, and Troy’s time slipped away tonight.”

Meanwhile, family members of the murdered officer expressed relief that the execution was over, according to the Associated Press.

News of the execution quieted hundreds of protesters who had lined the highway across from the entrance to the prison for hours, chanting and singing as they faced a small army of baton-wielding prison guards in full riot gear, sheriff’s deputies and state police. The crowd of protesters was quickly dispersed by police after Davis’ death was announced.

Local observers called the protests the largest at the state’s death row in many years. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Don Earnhart, manager of a Jackson, Ga., radio station, who said he has covered executions for several decades. Protests were also seen at the state capitol, Athens, in Washington, D.C. and at the U.S. embassy in London.

The execution was delayed for more than four hours by a last-minute petition to the U.S. Supreme Court by Davis’ legal team. The justices denied the petition without comment or dissent.

Davis’ death ends an extraordinary legal saga that included three last-minute stays of execution and dozens of hearings before state and federal appellate courts. Over two decades, his legal team argued that a lack of physical evidence linking Davis to the crime and recantations by a number of critical eyewitnesses who originally implicated him in the shooting were reason enough for the Georgia courts to grant him a new trial

But state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, repeatedly ruled against his appeals for a new trial and he was ultimately executed on the basis of the original jury verdict.

On Tuesday, the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles, which has sole authority to commute a death sentence in the state, rejected Davis’ plea for clemency, essentially sealing his fate. MacPhail’s family members had repeatedly stated their certainty that Davis was guilty of the crime and consistently fought his efforts to obtain clemency.

Earlier this week, the state’s pardons board was bombarded by hundreds of thousands of petitions to spare Davis’ life, including ones from William S. Sessions, a former FBI director, and Bob Barr, a four-term Republican congressman from Georgia and death penalty supporter. Many of those opposed to the execution noted the lack of physical evidence tying Davis to the crime and the recantation of eyewitness, many of whom told attorneys for Davis that they had been pressured by police to testify that Davis was the shooter.

“Imposing an irreversible sentence of death on the skimpiest of evidence will not serve the interest of justice,” Barr wrote in an editorial on the case last Wednesday.

On Wednesday morning, Davis offered to submit to a lie detector test, but the request was denied by prison officials.

As the hours until the execution dwindled, calls for clemency continued from around the nation and the world, including from a group of former death row wardens, who wrote to Georgia authorities calling on them to halt the death sentence due to doubts about Davis’ guilt. Among the group was the former warden in charge of the Georgia death chamber.

“While most of the prisoners whose executions we participated in accepted responsibility for the crimes for which they were punished, some of us have also executed prisoners who maintained their innocence until the end,” the wardens wrote. “It is those cases that are most haunting to an executioner.”

Meanwhile, the family of the murdered policeman, Mark MacPhail, and the case’s original prosecutor have argued strenuously for Davis’ execution, and have asserted that there is no doubt that he is guilty of the murder.

Joan MacPhail-Harris, the officer’s widow, said this week that Davis “has had ample time to prove his innocence” and failed to do so, according to the Associated Press. She, along with MacPhail’s children, urged the pardon’s board to deny Davis’ petition for clemency this week.

An extraordinary hearing last year ordered by the U.S. Supreme Court gave Davis the rare opportunity to present evidence of his innocence as part of a petition for a new trial. The judge overseeing the hearing ruled that the state’s case against Davis “may not be ironclad” and agreed that Davis had raised some doubts about his conviction. However, the judge concluded that Davis had not provided the court with compelling evidence of his innocence and denied his request for a retrial.

Supporters of Davis said the unwillingness of the U.S. justice system to reconsider his death sentence in light of the witness recantations and other new evidence exposed fundamental problems in the justice system.

“Troy Davis has become an incredible symbol of everything that is broken, everything that is wrong” with the capital punishment in the U.S., said Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International’s U.S. branch, in an interview on the prison grounds.

Jason Ewart, Davis attorney, said he hoped Davis death would lead to systematic reform.

“This case struck a chord in the world, and as a result the legacy of Troy Davis doesn’t die tonight,” Ewart said, standing beside Davis’ family members outside Georgia’s death row.

“Our sadness, the sadness of his friends and his family, is tempered by the hope that Troy’s death will lead to fundamental legal reforms,” he said, “so we will never again witness, with inevitable regret, the execution of an innocent man as we did here tonight.”

Doug: Noted. I don’t believe that this is strictly a republican issue, but the republicans are certainly the ones who have no conscious when it comes to their actions with respect to our country, and the well-being of all Americans. If any party is going to do what is best for the country, I’ll side with the democrats. Yes, not all dems have the people’s interest at heart – one look at the blue dogs tell us that. But sticking with the dems is a start. And voting the dems in, that truly care about our country and the well-being of all Americans, takes a conscious effort on everyone’s part. It is a work in progress, and one that we can not rest on our laurels and/or be lazy.

Zen Lill: Thanks for the heads up on this horrible tradition, the Freedom Project, and the upcoming documentary this weekend. Is it any surprise that men support this?  Gratitude to Anil Kapoor for his efforts to stop this.

Peter: I have asked that same question myself, because it makes no sense for any OTW or gay person…yes gay people do vote republican too! What are these people thinking?

Blog me. Peace out.

HI Mischa, first, I am saddened that Troy Davis was executed and my condolences to his family/loved ones. Secondly, I would love to tell you that this will stop but as you know I was/am a cop’s kid and they protect their own – always. To release Troy would be a huge admission of guilt. Cops, they’re just (mostly) white guys with little money, some power and a uniform to hide behind…

    Luv, Zen Lill

I RECEIVED THIS AD FROM HUMAN EVENTS WRITTEN IN SMALL CASE BY ANN COULTER. I ADDED THE CAPS AS COMMENTARY.

    ENJOY.

    Dear Fellow “Billionaire/Corporate Jet Owner”,

Even though my new book is riding high on the bestseller lists, I want to send you a free copy. Yes, free. SHE FAILS TO MENTION THAT THE REASON HER BOOK ” is riding high on the bestseller lists” IS BECAUSE HER RICH BACKERS PRE BUYS THEM BEFORE THEY GO TO PRINT AT TAX PAYERS EXPENSE SO THEY CAN GIVE THEM AWAY IN A OFFER JUST LIKE THE ONE SHE IS MAKING.

That’s how important I believe it is for you read Demonic: How the Liberal Mob is Endangering America. NOTICE HOW SHE IS CALLING ANYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH THE REPUBLICAN PLATFORM “Demonic” OR PART OF A “Mob.” THIS IS WHAT SAYS THEY HAVE NO ROOM FOR COMPROMISE. IT IS EITHER THEIR WAY OR YOU ARE PORTRAYED AS BEING UNGODLY OR PART OF A UNSAVORY ELEMENT.

I’ll tell you how to receive your gift copy in just a second. But first, I want to ask you one question:

Did your blood boil as you watched the violent spectacles in Wisconsin staged by Democrat-led public-sector unions?
NOTICE HOW SHE DEFINES FOR THOSE WHO DID NOT SEE THE EVENT THE ACTIONS AS BEING “violent.” BUT THE ACTIONS BY THE ROWDY TEAPARTIERS WAS OKAY.

If so, brace yourself for what’s ahead. As the 2012 election draws nearer, I fear sickening scenes like this will become as frequent as Nancy Pelosi’s Botox appointments. HERE SHE SHOWS THE LACK OF BOUNDARIES PRESENT WHEN REPUBLICANS ATTACK.

NOTHING IS SACRED. THEY WILL USE ANY TACTIC TO DEMEAN, BELITTLE, SLANDER, MOCK OR HUMILIATE THE OPPONENT. THE WOMEN OF THE PARTY HAVE NO RESPECT FOR THEMSELVES OR OTHER FEMALES.

THEY DO WHAT THE MEN FEAR TO DO LESS THEY BE CALLED RUDE. SO THE REPUBLICAN WOMAN STEPS UP TO THE PLATE AND DOES THE DIRTY CREEPY WORK OF ATTACKING THE WOMAN OPPONENT UNDER HER DRESS OR ABOUT HER LOOKS.

NEVER MIND THAT NEITHER HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE WOMAN’S POLITICS. FOR THE REPUBLICAN IT IS ABOUT WINNING AT ANY COST.

ACTUALLY, THE ONLY REASON THIS TACTIC WORKS IS BECAUSE THE PEOPLE THEY APPEAL TO FOR VOTES SEE NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. Heck, some blunt-speaking Democrats already admit they’re going to get rough. ONE ONLY WONDERS HOW MUCH ROUGHER THAN WHAT SHE IS DOING THE DEMS CAN DO?

“It’s not going to be 2008 ‘Yes, we can’ anymore. I think it’s going to be slash-and-burn,” said Democratic pollster Paul Maslin.

Translation: The outright thuggery we witnessed in Madison was a preview of how Democrats will use mob tactics to try and re-elect their failed president whose catastrophic policies have brought America to the brink of ruin. NOTICE HOW SHE CONVENIENTLY LEFT OUT THAT BUSH GAVE THE REINS TO OBAMA WITH THE COUNTRY ON THE BRINK OF ECONOMIC RUIN.

I agree with the candid pollster that Obamacrats, driven by their mob mentality, will decide they have little choice but to resort to bullying in 2012. WHAT DOES SHE CALL WHAT SHE DID ABOVE WHEN SHE OPENED BY CALLING HER OPPONENTS “Demonic, violent, botox users, and mobs.”

You see, in 2008 (AKA “the Year of the Second Coming” to liberals), Barack Obama had no record to run on. He was free to campaign with vague promises of “hope and change” while counting on foolish independents and naïve young people to project their own wishes upon him like a blank screen.

THE MISTAKE THAT WAS MADE WAS NOT OBAMA’S “vague promises of hope and change” THE MISTAKE WAS IN HIS BELIEVING THAT BEING CIVIL AND ATTEMPTING TO COMPROMISE WOULD ENCOURAGE THE REPUBLICANS TO ACT FOR THE NATION RATHER THAN FOR THEMSELVES.

But in 2012, Obama will have no such luxury. We know who he is now. He can’t hide behind hope. Or change. His record, as the old political saying goes, “stinks and shines like a mackerel in the moonlight.” Which is why… I DO BELIEVE THAT OBAMA HAS LEARNED SOMETHING FROM HIS EXPERIENCE WITH THE REPUBLICANS. I HOPE THAT IF HE WINS A SECOND TERM HE WILL BE ABLE TO TELL THEM THAT THEIR SHIT STINKS.

Democrats will use the same vile “Wisconsin Strategy” to frighten conservatives and independents and make them fearful of daring to unelect the first African-American president of the United States. SINCE WHEN HAS A WHITE MAN BEEN “frightened” ABOUT DOING ANYTHING TO AN OTW? THEY HAD NO PROBLEMS FRAMING AND STICKING THE NEEDLE TO TROY DAVIS.

Liberals and Mobs: A Long Love Affair ONCE AGAIN ANY DEMEANING ATTACK IS FINE FOR THEM.

Demonic: How the Liberal Mob is Endangering America reveals why mob strategy is essential to motivating modern liberalism. From union thugs to student radicals to pro-ObamaCare fanatics, use of mobs IS the grand tradition of Stalin, Mao, Hitler, gas chambers and the guillotine. DID THIS WOMAN LEAVE ANY STONE UNTURNED IN HER EFFORD TO DEMEAN, SLANDER, BELITTLE, DEMAGOGUE , AND TAG THE REPUBLICAN POLITICAL OPPONENT’S OPINION AS BEING UNWORTHY OF THE MERIST CONSIDERATION.

PERHAPS THAT IS DONE TO PREVENT THE VOTER FROM LISTENING TO AN OPPOSING VIEW. THE REPUBLICAN STRATEGY IS TO ATTACK THE PERSON WHEN HIS/HER MESSAGE MAKES SENSE SO AS TO DROWN OUT THE MESSAGE.

Ask yourself… Have you ever seen a “conservative mob?” Can you imagine a “Republican riot?” The notion is absurd. LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT THE TEA PARTY TAKES ITS NAME FROM A BUNCH OF RIOTERS THAT “PROTESTED TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION,”

BUT THEY THEMSELVES WOULD NOT RIOT FOR LIBERTY? AND ALL THAT BUSINESS OF ATTACKING U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AWHILE BACK, AND THE CARRYING OF GUNS TO POLITICAL RALLIES, ETC, ETC WAS NOT INDICATIVE OF A “mob” OR BAD BEHAVIOR IN ANY WAY BECAUSE IT WAS DONE BY “conservatives. The notion is absurd.”

Yet, riots, strikes, demonstrations, civil (and uncivil) disobedience, beatings, protests, sit-ins, boycotts, firebombings, and general public mayhem are the mother’s milk of the liberal mob mentality. REDUNDANT

In Demonic, you’ll find answers to questions you’ve probably asked yourself dozens of times as you watched news clips of enraged liberals running amok: WHO IS ASKING THEMSELVES THESE QUESTIONS? MORONS?

Why do liberals activate mobs, depend on mobs, coddle mobs, publicize and celebrate mobs? (The tradition goes way, way back, as I prove.) OF COURSE SHE HAS THE ANSWERS TO ALL OF THESE INSIGHTFUL, DEEP QUESTIONS.

What do highly educated liberals find so admirable about brutal, violent thugs like Castro, Stalin and Mao? (You’ll be repulsed, but fascinated, when I reveal the shocking truth.) IT IS SO INTERESTING HOW MUCH THE CONSERVATIVE LIKES TO BE “repulsed.”

PERHAPS THAT IS WHY WE FIND THEIR LEADERS CAUGHT SO OFTEN CHEATING ON THEIR WIVES, CHASING PAGES, AND ENGAGING IN THE VERY VICES THEY WARN THEIR FOLLOWERS AGAINST.

TRULY THEY ARE EASLIY FASCINATED AS ONE WITH A CHILD’S ATTENTION SPAN AND INTELLECT WOULD BE.

Why is it that conservatives revere the American Revolution (which was about ideas) — but liberals find inspiration in the horrors of the French Reign of Terror, the Bolshevik Revolution, Mao’s Cultural Revolution, Pol Pot’s slaughter and today’s deranged anarchist smashups wherever bankers come to town? (The answer will prepare you for what’s coming.) CAN’T YOU JUST SEE THESE PEOPLE WAITING WITH BAITING BREATH TO RECEIVE HER BOOK”
I’ve arranged for you to receive a gift copy of Demonic: How the Liberal Mob is Endangering America just for trying my favorite newspaper on the face of the planet… Human Events. AH, NOW COMES THE SCAM. THEY GIVE YOU A BOOK THEY PRE BOUGHT AS AN ADVERTISEMENT OR INCENTIVE TO PURCHASE SOMETHING FROM THEM. THE RESULT IS THESE REPUBLICAN INSIDERS GET RICH OFF THE AMERICAN TAXPAYER. HOW YOU ASK?

WELL THE BOOK IS A TAX RIGHT OFF TO HUMAN EVENTS BECAUSE THEY ARE USING IT TO GAIN A SALE. IT IS A PAYOFF TO COUTLER BECAUSE THEY BOUGHT IT TO GET HER TO PUT HER NAME TO THE SILLY SPIEL.

THEY GET TO DUMB DOWN THE RANK AND FILE AND MAKE A FEW BUCKS IN THE PROCESS. THE AMERICAN TAXPAYER GETS TO EAT THE BILL.

Human Events is the publication I have called my editorial home for 14 years. Not only do I write regularly for Human Events, I devour it from cover to cover every week. OF COURSE SHE WRITES FOR IT. THEY PRE BUY THE PROPAGANDA THEY GET HER TO PUT HER NAME TO. IT IS WRITTEN NOT BY HER BUT BY A GROUP OF REPUBLICAN PROPAGANDIST WHO KEEP THE CORE FIRED UP.

Why? Because it’s the one news source I can count on to bring me the absolute, unvarnished, hard-hitting truth. And so should you. DON’T YOU JUST LOVE THE EXCITING WORDS THEY USE TO MAKE THEIR IDIOTS FEEL SPECIAL “the absolute, unvarnished, hard-hitting truth.” NOW THOSE ARE WORDS TO MARCH BY.

Human Events is written and edited by gutsy people who will rescue you from the sticky tar pit of political correctness that passes for contemporary reporting… not girlie-boy editors afraid of sticking to their guns!

That means by reading Human Events, you and I can count on learning the news the liberal media try so hard to keep from us!

    For example…

In a recent issue of Human Events, I learned that of all those “thousands of acres” Obama speaks of as ready for oil drilling in U.S. waters…virtually none have been found to have any oil! In other words, Obama has no intention of opening new drilling anywhere in the U.S. — no matter how high the price of gasoline soars.

I also learned in Human Events that Obama’s “economic stimulus” was simply a gargantuan gift to the states — to make sure pampered government workers did not share the same painful fate as private-sector workers who lost jobs by the millions.

I found out in Human Events that ObamaCare is so brilliant and so wonderful that trade unions and companies friendly to the president are fleeing it by the thousands. In fact, Obama’s health plan is so desirable that 20% of the exemptions have gone to Nancy Pelosi’s posh district in San Francisco!

You could search the liberal press from now until Whoopi Goldberg votes Republican, and you wouldn’t find news items like these seeing the light of day.

Now you know why I think you and Human Events should get together.

There’s so much at stake today. America is facing its biggest financial crisis of modern times and liberals just don’t get it. Never has it been more important for you to get the truth — and not just the P.C. pabulum dished up by the mainstream media.

NOTE ALL THAT RANTING AND NO MENTION THAT IT WAS BUSH’S ADMINISTRATION’S POLICIES THAT CAUSED “America is facing its biggest financial crisis of modern times.”

IT SEEMS IT IS THE “conservatives” THAT DON’T GET THAT.

ACTUALLY THE ONLY TRUTH SHE HAS UTTERED IN THIS DIATRIBE IS “Never has it been more important for you to get the truth.” IF ONLY HER LISTENERS COULD GET THE TRUTH!

And now you can try Human Events with this special introductory offer — a full 30-week trial subscription at the reduced rate of just $39.95… a little more than a dollar an issue. NOW FOR THE SALE.

And don’t forget — you’ll also receive as a FREE gift my just-published and (what else?) very provocative book… WHY IS IT WHEN A “conservative” WRITES SOMETHING SLANDEROUS, MEAN, AND FULL OF LIES THEY CALL IT “provocative?”

Demonic: How the Liberal Mob is Endangering America

My book will not only give you a mesmerizing peek into the fever-swamp that passes for liberal thinking, it will also prepare you for the onslaught that is coming in 2012. “the fever-swamp that passes for liberal thinking,”

THAT SHOULD DETER ANY THINKING “conservative” FROM EVEN CONSIDERING THE OPINIONS OF ANY LIBERAL POLITICIAN OR OTHERWISE. WHY BOTHER CONSIDERING LOGIC COMING FROM A “fever-swamp.”

NICE LITTLE TOUCH THERE DEMEANING THE PERSON SO THAT THEIR OPINIONS WILL NOT BE MEASURED ALONG SIDE THE NON FEVER-SWAMP THAT PASSES FOR “conservative” THINKING.”

You know how liberals worship their “deities” — FDR, JFK, RFK, MLK, the list goes on and on — but can you imagine their rage at even the thought of Barack Hussein Obama becoming a failed, one-term president? How dare you, America!

LETS NOT FOR GET HOW THE “conservatives” ARE ALWAYS FLINGING THEIR RONALD REAGAN IN OUR FACES. THE PROBLEM IS HE IS THE PRESIDENT THAT STARTED THE DEREGULATION OF THE BANKS.

BEFORE HIM A BANKS STATE CHARTER WOULDN’T ALLOW IT TO OPERATE OUTSIDE OF ITS STATE, NOR COULD ANYONE BECOME A BANKER.

ONE HAD TO NOT HAVE A CRIMINAL RECORD. REAGAN DID AWAY WITH THOSE REQUIREMENTS. INCLUDING THE ONE THAT ALLOWED BANKS TO SPECULATE IN THE INVESTMENT FIELD.

Thousands of Americans will be caught off guard by liberals’ outrageous actions in an attempt to save Obama. Not you. You’ll know every step of the way what’s coming — from the public sector unions, the left-dominated universities, the Obama-obsessed popular culture, and the hard-core liberal media — because you’ll know exactly how their mob-loving, totalitarian minds work.

IMAGINE THE MIND THAT BELIEVES THAT THIS WOMAN HAS WRITTEN A BOOK THAT WILL TELL THEM WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE LEFT BECAUSE SHE WILL TELL THEM HOW THE LEFT’S MINDS WORK SO THEY CAN SEE THE FUTURE ACTIONS OF THOSE LEFTIES.

HOW FRIGHTENING IS IT TO KNOW THAT THESE PEOPLE HAVE THE POWER OF THE VOTE?

    ABSOLUTELY FREE

I think you’ll thrive with Human Events. After all, there’s a certain cachet to reading a publication that is universally damned by liberal elites who increasingly resemble the idle degenerates who once populated the czar’s court.

AS I SAID NO STONE UNTURNED. SO WE NOW “resemble the idle degenerates who once populated the czar’s court.” JUST SO YOU KNOW.

THIS WOMAN DOESN’T KNOW THAT STATEMENT SUPPORTS THE COMMUNISTS THAT OVERTHREW THAT GOVERNMENT. THIS IS WHAT I MEAN BY HYPOCRISY OR MAYBE JUST PLAIN IGNORANCE.

WE FOUGHT 50 YEARS OF COLD WAR BECAUSE THE COMMUNIST OVERTHREW THOSE “idle degenerates who once populated the czar’s court.”

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU CAN’T STOP EATING

There’s such a thing as eating too much… and then there’s binge eating.

I guess all of us have experienced the uncomfortable sensation that comes with eating too much at a restaurant or holiday party, but I was a little surprised when I read recently that binge eating —

eating much too much, and doing it repeatedly — is a problem for about two million Americans and that about one-third of them are male.

Another interesting fact is that binge eating is even common among people in their 40s and 50s (though it may be that these folks have been suffering from the disorder for 10, 20 or 30 years and are just now acknowledging it or seeking help).

To get the details, I contacted Stanford University, where research is currently underway on effective treatments for binge eating.

I spoke to Athena Robinson, PhD, instructor of psychiatry and behavioral science at the Stanford School of Medicine and leader of the research.

    IT’S NOT ABOUT FOOD

Although you would expect binge eaters to also have weight problems, surprisingly, some are actually of normal weight, Dr. Robinson told me, noting that a binge eater’s problem is not necessarily related to food — not in the sense that we normally associate with overeating.

“A large body of evidence demonstrates that negative emotions often precede binge-eating episodes,” she said.

“Depression is often a component in binge eating, and learning how to cope with negative emotions may help people who struggle with binge eating to stop.”

Whereas normal eaters enjoy their occasional overindulgence, binge eaters typically are very unhappy after their eating episodes, generally feeling ashamed and disappointed in themselves.

Since these are people who may not know how to handle their emotions productively, this is a situation that sets them up to do the same thing again in short order.

Dr. Robinson told me that binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common of the eating disorders.

A person is diagnosed as having BED if he/she eats an unambiguously large amount of food in an hour or two (e.g., more than would be eaten in two separate meals) while experiencing a sense of loss of control over the eating episode.

In addition, the person must meet at least three of the following five criteria:

Eating large amounts of food when he or she is not physically hungry.

Eating quickly, far faster than is normal.

Eating until he is past the point of being uncomfortable.

Eating alone because he is embarrassed by how much he is eating (many binge eaters also hide their binge food and the evidence that they’ve eaten it for the same reason).

Feelings of disgust, depression or guilt associated with overeating.

It’s important to note that unlike people with the eating disorder bulimia, binge eaters do not purge after they eat.

    RESEARCH UNDERWAY

To help binge eaters get to the root of their challenges and stop the cycle of eating, Dr. Robinson’s research team designed a study to evaluate two kinds of self-help treatment for BED
    — integrative response therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy –
to determine which is most effective. Recruiting started in June 2010 and is still ongoing, with results expected in 2015.

Dr. Robinson told me that the two treatments for BED that are most supported by research are cognitive behavioral therapy (which emphasizes establishing regular patterns of eating) and interpersonal therapy (which focuses on interpersonal relationships and handling your emotions).

A third option — integrative response therapy (IRT) — is a new approach developed by Dr. Robinson and her team that focuses on teaching emotion-coping skills to help individuals cease binge eating.

IRT is delivered via group therapy, which can be effective since people gain valuable support and feedback from others,

helping them feel less isolated and ashamed, and guided self-help, meaning they do many activities and exercises on their own with support from a therapist.

The goal of the research is to measure the effectiveness of integrative response therapy versus the more traditional cognitive behavioral therapy.

    HEAL THYSELF

It may be difficult for a binge eater to overcome the problem without professional help and sometimes medication, such as an antidepressant or the anticonvulsant topiramate (Topamax), which has been shown to reduce episodes and also to help with weight loss.

In addition, lifestyle changes can be made that are helpful. These include:

Learn strategies to cope with emotion. Finding alternative methods of effectively reducing overwhelming negative emotions may be instrumental in overcoming binge eating.

Eating regular meals, including breakfast. Sometimes binge eaters eat in the absence of hunger, so it’s important to train yourself to eat reasonable amounts of food at regular intervals.

Breakfast is particularly important — many binge eaters skip breakfast.

Avoiding diets. Trying to lose weight may lead to more binges — it’s better to first work on modifying your diet by eating regular, well-rounded meals overall… and exercising regularly.

If you happen to live near Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, you may be interested to know that Dr. Robinson’s group is recruiting participants for her ongoing research on this topic (learn more at http://med.stanford.edu/clinicaltrials/psychiatry/detail.do?studyId=7362 or by calling 650-724-9251).

Dr. Robinson also identified a few Web sites that offer useful self-help resources for binge eaters, including the National Eating Disorders Association (www.NationalEatingDisorders.org)…

the Binge Eating Disorder Association (www.BEDAOnline.org)…

and the Something Fishy Website on Eating Disorders (www.Something-Fishy.org). If you or someone you know is a binge eater, I urge you to get help quickly.

Over the weekend, a Somali radio station run by the Shabab, the most powerful Islamist militant group in the war-ravaged country, held an awards ceremony to honor children who were experts at Shabab trivia and at reciting the Koran. The prizes? Fully automatic assault rifles and live hand grenades.

The contest itself was held during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting , and featured questions that the Shabab seemed to think every child should know, like which war was Sheik Timajilic (a famous Shabab warrior) killed in?

Contestants in the Shabab quiz included children from all across Shabab-controlled areas of Somalia, most of the southern third of the country. The children competed live on air from the many radio stations nationwide that the Shabab control.

On Sunday, the awards were handed out at the Andalus radio station in Elasha Biyaha, a small town near Mogadishu. The first- and second-place winners won AK-47 assault rifles, some money and Islamic books. The third-place winner got grenades.

Douglas on one level that is terrible. But when compared to the price gun enthusiasts in the US pay for their assault weapons, the kid got a bargain.

Every gun expert worth his expertise knows that an AK47 is the greatest assault weapon ever made. It doesn’t jam, rust, or over heat. It just keeps killing.

The automatic weapons that are being sold to the kids here in America pales in comparison. Of course that’s of little matter to the thousands in both countries that lose their lives to those weapons every year.

  12. Jim Says:

Today, President Obama stood on the Brent Spence Bridge that connects Ohio to Kentucky and spoke about how the American Jobs Act could help rebuild that bridge and thousands like it, and put construction workers and manufacturers back to work.

It has been exactly two weeks since President Obama proposed the American Jobs Act — a fully paid-for plan made up of ideas that both parties have endorsed in the past and ought to be able to get behind now. A wide majority of Americans who have heard about the Jobs Act want to see it passed right away.

But Congress has yet to take any action on it whatsoever.

There’s no excuse for any more delays. The President is out there bringing this plan straight to the American people. It’s on us to help put the pressure on Congress.

House Speaker John Boehner — who will be leading the Republicans in negotiations — needs to hear what Americans like you think.

President Obama this week also outlined his plan to pay for the bill while still reducing our deficit. At the heart of the plan is the Buffett Rule, a commonsense principle that would require people earning more than $1 million a year to pay the same share of their income in taxes as middle-class families do.

If that’s a proposal you think makes sense, it’s time to let John Boehner hear it.

Republicans have responded to the plan with more cries of “class warfare,” a term that apparently applies when the President asks millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share but not when Republicans cut urgently needed programs for middle-class families.

As the President said, this isn’t class warfare — it’s simple math. If we want to reduce the deficit and put America back to work, we can’t put the entire burden on the middle class. But we know that’s exactly what congressional Republicans will do if we don’t take action — decimate programs seniors and families rely on, while protecting every loophole and giveaway for billionaires and big corporations.

None of us have time to sit around and wait while our lawmakers dig in for a political fight when there are reasonable solutions for creating jobs on the table right now.

As the President told Congress more a week ago, “this plan is the right thing to do right now. You should pass it. And I intend to take that message to every corner of this country. And I ask every American who agrees to lift your voice: Tell the people who are gathered here tonight that you want action now. Tell Washington that doing nothing is not an option. Remind us that if we act as one nation and one people, we have it within our power to meet this challenge.”

He was talking to us, so let’s do our job. Call John Boehner in Washington now — and tell him it’s time to pass this jobs bill.

    Thanks,

The federal government shouldn’t fund Guam’s social and environmental costs of the military buildup, according to one U.S. senator, prompting the island’s congressional delegate to react.

In a statement on the Senate floor yesterday, Guam time, Republican Sen. John McCain questioned an appropriation of $33 million for Guam school buses, building Phase One of a repository for cultural artifacts, and funding for the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse.

“In the face of all the doubt about the scope and timing of the eventual buildup, the Appropriations Committee put a premium on buying school buses, an artifact repository, and a mental health clinic in Guam. Those simply are not my idea of top defense priorities in the fiscal environment we face,” McCain said.

Guam Delegate Madeleine Bordallo issued a statement condemning comments made by McCain, and called them “not consistent with” recent developments in Japan.

“For the first time, the government of Japan has a concrete plan on how to achieve tangible progress in Okinawa next year, and Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has expressed his government’s support for moving forward with the realignment,” Bordallo said.

She said the buildup on Guam is an absolute necessity for the United States to ensure regional stability, and that Congress must provide the resources necessary to ensure that it is a “win-win” for the military and Guam’s civilian community.

McCain contended that the military buildup is in doubt, noting that the Armed Services Committee and the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee have stopped funding Guam military construction projects until the Department of Defense provides a master plan and considers alternatives that may provide the needed Marine forward presence at much less expense.

But still, earlier this month, key members of the House Armed Services Committee, including Bordallo, affirmed progress on the military buildup, while acknowledging the upcoming deficit reductions.

The representatives reiterated that the buildup would go on, just within the constraints of what may be a tight budget, according to Pacific Daily News files.

And Japan has provided about $800 million of its 60 percent share of the $10 billion cost to move about 8,000 Marines and their dependents from Okinawa to Guam.

    Campaign remarks
During McCain’s 2008 presidential bid, McCain delivered remarks in a videotaped speech in May 2008 during a $500-a-plate campaign fundraiser at the Hyatt Regency Guam, according to Pacific Daily News files.

At the time, McCain expressed support for the military buildup, and called Guam the “tip of the spear” in Asia and the Pacific Rim.

“This increase in U.S. military presence will translate into an improved quality of life for all of the people of Guam and the entire Western Pacific.

As your future president, I will work closely with (then-Gov. Felix Camacho) as well as the rest of your leaders to help move Guam forward into a new era of prosperity for the Western Pacific and Micronesia,” McCain said at the time.

“As president, I will not forget my responsibilities to every American community — including Guam,” McCain added.

Speaker Judith Won Pat said she wasn’t surprised by McCain’s recent comments, particularly in light of a new movement in Washington to cut expenses.

But she said she’s concerned about how any cutbacks to buildup funding would affect Guam’s economy, and the impact the military has on Guam infrastructure.

Sen. Frank Blas Jr. said the comments are indicative of Guam’s second-class status in Congress, as a territory with no actual voting power.

“Again it goes to show — Guam, we need a greater presence in Washington with a voice that can actually assist in being able to shape the national conversation,” Blas said.

Buildup Committee Chairwoman Sen. Judith Guthertz said the remarks show that McCain is not concerned or has forgotten the international agreements and defense needs that led to the Guam military buildup.

The senator pointed out that agreements have been made between the military and Guam to mitigate the costs of the buildup, particularly buildup projects that would displace the island’s cultural artifacts.

Under the Programmatic Agreement signed in March, the military committed to spend at least $12.5 million on a 20,000-square-foot cultural repository to hold artifacts uncovered by buildup projects. The agreement was contingent upon Guam accepting the Programmatic Agreement.

Buildup Committee Chair Calls McCain’s Remarks “Irresponsible”

    Guam News – Guam News

Guam -The Chair of the Legislature’s Buildup Committee, Senator Judi Guthertz is calling remarks made about the Guam Buildup by Arizona Senator John McCain “irresponsible.”
Senator McCain slammed the $33 million in Guam infrastructure spending approved last week by the Senate Appropriations Committee. On the Senate floor Wednesday in Washington, McCain mocked the spending for school buses, a mental health facility and a repository to house cultural artifacts.

Senator Guthertz today issued a statement saying: “If Senator McCain or his staff had bothered to look into why these decisions were made, rather than firing off cheap media shots, they would understand, unless they have been totally brainwashed by the Tea Party.”

Guthertz points out that it was the Defense Department itself that offered to fund the the museum [for cultural artifacts] because of their concern that the massive development planned for the buildup would destroy important archaeological sites on island.

The Senator accuses McCain of having “forgotten many promises that were made to pave the way for the buildup.”

And she concludes by remarking that Senator McCain’s remarks clearly show that he “doesn’t care one bit about the U.S. citizen civilians on Guam, who have been assured by the DoD that impacts on the civilian community would be mitigated in exchange for their support of the buildup.”

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SENATOR GUTHERTZ: SENATOR MCCAIN’S REMARKS ON GUAM MILITARY BUILDUP ARE IRRESPONSIBLE AND SUGGEST HIS MEMORY IS FAILING

Guam Military Buildup & Homeland Security Committee Chairperson Judi Guthertz says Senator John McCain’s remarks ridiculing elements of the buildup that would benefit Guam’s civilian population suggest that he has forgotten many promises that were made to pave the way for the buildup.

McCain claimed to be outraged that the House Appropriations Committee has approved $33 million which among other things, is supposed to pay for a mental health facility and a ‘cultural repository’ (museum) in Guam. “Now I know the Marines will enjoy being on Guam,” McCain said, “I’m not sure it’s absolutely necessary for them to have a repository for cultural artifacts.”

“If Senator McCain or his staff had bothered to look into why these decisions were made, rather than firing off cheap media shots, they would understand, unless they have been totally brainwashed by the Tea Party,” Senator Guthertz said.

Guthertz explained that the Department of Defense offered to fund the museum in view of widespread concern that the massive development planned for the buildup would destroy archaeological and culturally significant artifacts on the island forever. It is supported by a 2010 Programmatic Agreement signed off on by both GovGuam and the military.

Senator Guthertz said the sniping at the construction funds for the mental health facility was particularly outrageous since the EIS process made it quite clear that the arrival of Marines and their dependents envisioned in the original buildup plans would push present mental health facilities in Guam past the breaking point. Senator Guthertz said that the military made no commitment to expand the existing system. “This item shouldn’t even be controversial,” Guthertz said.

Senator Guthertz said that the general thrust of Senator McCain’s remarks show that he’s not concerned or has forgotten the international agreements and defense needs that led to the Guam military buildup.

“The really sad part for me however, is that Senator McCain clearly doesn’t care one bit about the U.S. citizen civilians on Guam, who have been assured by the DoD that impacts on the civilian community would be mitigated in exchange for their support of the buildup,” Senator Guthertz said.

  20. Health Info Says:

$50 FIX REDUCES SLEEP APNEA BY 36%

Would you rather wear a strange-looking and uncomfortable mask while you sleep… or tight stockings during the day?

The obvious answer is “um, neither”… but it is entirely possible that people who have a certain type of chronic obstructive sleep apnea may be presented with exactly this choice, based on new European research.

A study just published in the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine reports that wearing compression stockings can reduce sleep apnea episodes significantly for one-third of the people whose apnea is caused by chronic venous insufficiency — a pretty dramatic difference for such an easy treatment.

Since it was a small, brief and preliminary study focused on just this one cause of obstructive sleep apnea, it’s entirely possible that longer treatment may yield even more impressive results that are helpful to even more patients.

    OUT FROM BEHIND THE MASK

I don’t know if you have ever seen a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask, but — even though the designers have done their best and there now are quite a few different models to choose from — there’s not a single one that is truly comfortable.

They are bulky and uncomfortable on the face and force many wearers to sleep in positions they’d rather not sleep in. Many people who need them refuse to wear them.

That’s why the news that there is a safe, easy-to-use and inexpensive treatment option for a good portion of people with sleep apnea is quite welcome!

I contacted Stefania Redolfi, MD, of the University of Brescia in Italy, lead researcher of this practical and surprisingly promising study.

She explained that chronic venous insufficiency is a vascular problem in which veins (primarily in the legs) can’t efficiently pump blood back to the heart.

Fluid builds up in the legs during the day and then shifts at night to the neck, bloating tissue there.

This causes the person to experience the partial collapse of the pharynx in between breaths during sleep — and so begins the loud, unpleasant “gasp and snore” pattern that characterizes obstructive sleep apnea in these patients.

What does wearing tight stockings during the day have to do with insufficient oxygen at night? It is actually quite ingenious.

“Wearing compression stockings during the day helps to reduce the daytime fluid accumulation in the legs,” Dr. Redolfi explained, “which in turn reduces the amount of fluid flowing into the neck at night.”

Absent the pressure created by that fluid, the respiratory system does not narrow as much and, for many people, this intervention is enough to allow them to get adequate oxygen into their lungs by breathing — and sleeping — normally.

This is a wonderful thing, because sleep apnea and the constantly interrupted sleep that goes with it can severely undermine a person’s health.

WHAT THE RIGHT SOCKS CAN DO

The study was small, involving 12 patients — half randomly assigned to wear compression stockings during the day (putting them on as soon as they awakened and taking them off only after getting into bed for the night) for a week, while the other half served as the control, with the two groups switching places after the first week.

Subjects spent their nights at a sleep center, where their physiological signs (including brain waves, respiration and eye movements) were measured continuously.

Researchers also measured each person’s overnight changes in leg fluid volume and neck circumference at the start of the study and at the end of both the compression-stocking and control periods.

Dr. Redolfi told me that the researchers expected the compression stockings would help — but they were somewhat surprised by the degree to which they helped!

    Wearing the stockings resulted in:
An average of a 62% reduction in overnight leg fluid volume change, as compared with when subjects did not wear the stockings.

A 60% reduction in neck circumference increase (used as a proxy measurement to estimate fluid shift into the neck).

A 36% reduction in the number of apnea episodes.

    EFFECTIVE AND INEXPENSIVE

This is a very basic intervention that has the potential to make a big difference for patients who are struggling with obstructive sleep apnea.

The stockings cost less than $50 and, though they aren’t exactly cute or comfortable, Dr. Redolfi told me that all the study participants preferred them to the CPAP mask.

As simple as it sounds, though, she told me that people with sleep apnea shouldn’t try this on their own — she said it is important to have a sleep study done to measure whether the stockings are making a difference and if so, how much.

Talk to your doctor about this. Dr. Redolfi plans further research to ascertain whether wearing the stockings for longer than a week shows more significant results…

to learn whether other measures, such as using diuretics or exercises to reduce fluid volume, are useful…

and also to examine whether wearing compression stockings can help people with sleep apnea due to other causes, such as obesity.

I’ll keep a watch for further findings and keep you apprised of the results.

Michelle, I am gay and I am white. That is exactly why I vote republican. Can you honestly say that the spook in the white house is doing a good job? If so, where are the jobs, honey?

If I were not white, I might consider voting for the brown party. But, I am white and, oh well, you know what I mean. Who wants to have his country run by someone who isn’t representative of his country.

I mean if he had more of his mother’s traits he could be more acceptable. But as is, please!

Give me a white man, honey. I know there are plenty of white women to choose from, but I’d sooner vote for a light hispanic or latino than someone from that gaggle of geese.
