Celebrate Thanksgiving By Honoring And Saving A Turkey
Posted by Michelle Moquin on November 24th, 2011
Good morning!
Okay…before you turkey eatin’ lovers get on my case, this is not about getting on your case for eating a turkey today.
Last year I wanted to recognize the plight of the Indian and honor their feelings of Thanksgiving. I wrote about “What not to be thankful for on a day for giving thanks”, and what does it really mean to those that it gives great meaning to? Here’s a little excerpt:
The definition of Thanksgiving is a far different description depending on who is telling the story:
The whites or the Indians. To the whites, Thanksgiving was a day that the Pilgrims sat with the indians and agreed to be peaceful. A day of celebration.
To the Wampanoags, Thanksgiving was literally about gratitude for genocide. A day of sorrow.
This year I want to recognize and honor the turkey. Although I will probably be eating turkey today, like many of you, many people will not be feasting on our feathered friend. In fact instead of our feathered friend being the feast, the turkey is fed a feast.
Here’s a delightful little write honoring the turkey. Even if you aren’t vegetarian or vegan, I think this will put a smile on your face:
Let Them Eat Squash! One Farm Celebrates Their Turkeys
Instead of being on the menu, these turkeys get their own Thanksgiving feast

The Farm Sanctuary, a farm with locations in both New York’s Finger Lakes and Northern California, has been honoring turkeys every Thanksgiving season for 25 years. A sanctuary for animals rescued from farms and stockyards, the Farm Sanctuary feeds their turkeys their own Thanksgiving dinner rather than preparing them to be part of the meal. The event, their Celebration FOR the Turkeys, is a huge draw for animal lovers who come to indulge in a vegan Thanksgiving alongside their gobbling counterparts.
The guests of honor peck at stuffed squash, pumpkin pie, and cranberries served on silver platters, while human attendees enjoy a cocktail hour with live music and a delicious, turkey-free, Thanksgiving feast. And for anyone that falls particularly in love with their gobbling, feasting friends, Farm Sanctuary has started the Adopt-a-Turkey Project to place turkeys into loving homes. Should your home not be fit for a turkey roommate, you can also sponsor a turkey at the sanctuary.
This year’s turkey Thanksgiving was held in California on November 19th and 20th and in New York on November 20th.
FARM SANCTUARY ADOPTIONS
For the Farm Sanctuary, Turkey Day is about saving turkeys, not eating them.
Farm Sanctuary rescues neglected farm animals and argues for humane farm policies and vegetarian diets. For the second year running, it’s lined up Ellen DeGeneres as the spokesperson for its Adopt-A-Turkey Project, a 25-year-old program that solicits $30 donations from people who want to adopt a rescued turkey.
Think of it as the presidential pardon for the 99%.
************
Readers: Hey, the president pardons a turkey each year. You can take it a step further and ”adopt” one. I mean can you resist? Don’t you just love the pic of the turkeys enjoying a feast? :)
Sending you all Peace, Love & Gratitude. Thanks for being here with me everyday. Have a Happy Thanksgiving in whatever way you celebrate and give gratitude!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING:
We should not need a holiday to tell us when to give thanks, but I find it a good day to think about things to be grateful for instead of only thinking about the negative.
Even though things are difficult and the future might feel discouraging, we could all find reasons to be thankful for what we do have. This is a day to look at the glass as half full instead of half empty.
Think about it. If you have a roof over your head, food to feed the family, and most importantly — a few good friends who make my life worth living, then this is as good a day as any to give thanks for what you do have.
For those who are having a trying time, try to HOPE that President Obama gets re-elected and the repugnants get what is coming to them this coming year. Then the future can begin looking better for us all.
We mustn’t forget to thank Michelle for keeping her blog going and having a place to exchange ideas and information.
