Wonderful Women Of The World: TedxWomen Part 1 – Resilience
Posted by Michelle Moquin on December 3rd, 2011
Good morning!
Last night a dear friend of mine invited me over to her house to watch TedX Women. This was a 4 part series, an entire day of inspiring women and girls telling their stories. The series began at 11:00 AM Thursday morning and ended Thursday night at 9:30PM, switching from the line-up in LA to the line-up in NY, and hosted by 4 different people. It is truly a sensational series of speakers.
So…because I am so thrilled with this series, I am going to post each part of this series on 4 different days beginning with….well beginning with part 1 of course.
So Thursday night I watched the entire part 4 of the series, and yesterday I watched the entire part 1. And all I can say is that the speakers all touched me in some way through their words…their vision…their HOPE….
Unfortunately, I am not able to post the videos of their talks, but please click on any of the names to view. And I encourage you to do so, because this series is so worth the watch – these women are wonderful.
As you can probably tell from the heading, each one of these lovely ladies deserve my title as a Wonderful Woman Of The World. And yes, you’ll notice one man is a featured speaker as well…and rightly deserves this spot amongst this group of women.
Here’s the line-up for part 1:
Resilience
The way women regroup, rebound, and rebuild after experiencing setbacks or loss, always moving forward

Gayle Tzemach Lemmon is the author of the New York Timesbest seller The Dressmaker of Khair Khana, and writes economic stories focused on women and girls as a fellow for the Council on Foreign Relations and a contributing editor at Newsweek Daily Beast.
Gayle Tzemach Lemmon never set out to write about women entrepreneurs. She was simply looking for a great—and underreported—economics story after leaving ABC News for MBA study at Harvard to pursue her interest in economic development.
What she found was women entrepreneurs in some of the toughest business environments creating jobs against daunting obstacles. Since then her writing on entrepreneurship has appeared in publications including the International Herald Tribune and Financial Times along with the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation.
While working in finance at the global investment firm PIMCO, Lemmon went on to write a book about a young Afghan teacher-turned-entrepreneur whose dressmaking business supported women around her neighborhood under the Taliban. The Dressmaker of Khair Khana became a New York Times bestseller and the subject of a Harvard Business School case study.
Now a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and a contributing editor-at-large for Newsweek Daily Beast, Lemmon continues to travel the world reporting on economic and development issues with a focus on women. She is author of the Newsweek March 2011 cover story “The Hillary Doctrine” and the September 2011 profile on U.N. Women’s Michelle Bachelet.
Lamis Zein is the first Lebanese woman who has qualified to conduct demolitions of cluster submunitions.
Lamis is the first Lebanese woman who has qualified to conduct demolitions of cluster submunitions. Formerly an English teacher, she found her new calling after the Israeli shelling in the summer of 2006 when four million cluster submunitions were dropped on South Lebanon. Today, hundreds of thousands of these remain unexploded, posing a threat to the people who live there, as well as rendering large tracts of land unsafe for use.
Lamis joined Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), an organization that is executing clearance of these unexploded submunitions. Her family’s initial reaction was not very positive—they deemed the work too dangerous and not appropriate for a woman. Traditionally, this incredibly dangerous work has been undertaken by men. But Lamis persevered with her mission to work as a searcher, and is now a site supervisor, heading an all-female clearance team. Lamis is committed to clearing Lebanon of these dangerous weapons, and to making this land safe again for its people, including for her two young daughters.

The republicans are doing everything they can to block any moneys going to Guam to accomplish the moving of marines to Guam from Japan.
They are on the take from their owners to stop any progress until they can get a piece of the billion dollar money pie.
McCain is on the take as usual. He an Senator John Webb of Virginia are the ones taking the big bucks to stall for their employers.
Look for much bull shit until their handlers get what they want from the $Billions.

Those of you who think just buying an i-phone or updating your OS is a fix, need to listen up. ALL CELL
PHONES are tracked, and anything on them can be using against you so long as the phone is connected to a “network”.
The “cell” in cell phone refers to the towers themselves, to guarantee quality of service your provider needs to know where your device is at all times, so ALL CELL PHONES “smart” and “dumb” are tracked.
Recent news mentioned a device called the stingray that can be used like a “portable cell tower” to find your phone wherever it is.
Now the tricky part is how exposed are you? To answer that you need to consider how “smart” your phone actually is?
Does it have GPS? Does it have internet access? Does it have a camera? Does it have expanded capabilities to run applications?
Well… Since it is connected to an active network, not only can the cell phone service provider locate you down to a few feet thanks to the GPS but so can a jealous partner or employer with software available online, an application designer / owner, a tech savvy computer geek, or someone with the monopoly of power like government, can use everything on that device that you can and more.
Find us on facebook under “caged ideas LLC” for more information.

Michelle, I read this in China. I suspect out government is using it to track all our messages. So I will not be using my cell to post to your blog anymore.
I thought I was being careful posting using western male and female names. But this new information tells me they were aware of every keystroke I made.
It is so sad that technology has to be this way. When I read the article you posted and this one I was so saddened.
Must be nice to be Zen Lill and never have to have the problems the rest of us have.

Carrier IQ: Researcher Trevor Eckhart Outs Creepy, Hidden App Installed On Smartphones (VIDEO) (UPDATE)
====================
A security researcher has posted a video detailing hidden software installed on smart phones that logs numerous details about users’ activities.
In a 17-minute video posted Monday on YouTube, Trevor Eckhart shows how the software – known as Carrier IQ – logs every text message, Google search and phone number typed on a wide variety of smart phones – including HTC, Blackberry, Nokia* and others – and reports them to the mobile phone carrier.
The application, which is labeled on Eckhart’s HTC smartphone as “HTC IQ Agent,” also logs the URL of websites searched on the phone, even if the user intends to encrypt that data using a URL that begins with “HTTPS,” Eckhart said.
The software always runs when Android operating system is running and users are unable to stop it, Eckhart said in the video.
“Why is this not opt-in and why is it so hard to fully remove?” Eckhart wrote at the end of the video.
In a post about Carrier IQ on his website, Eckhart called the software a “rootkit,” a security term for software that runs in the background without a user’s knowledge and is commonly used in malicious software.
Eckhart’s video is the latest in a series of attacks between him and the company. Earlier this month, Carrier IQ sent a cease and desist letter to Eckhart claiming he violated copyright law by publishing Carrier IQ training manuals online. But after the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights group, came to Eckhart’s defense, the company backed off its legal threats.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation said the software that Eckhart has publicized “raises substantial privacy concerns” about software that “many consumers don’t know about.”
Carrier IQ could not immediately be reached for comment. But the company told Wired.com that its software is used for “gathering information off the handset to understand the mobile-user experience, where phone calls are dropped, where signal quality is poor, why applications crash and battery life.”
On its website, Carrier IQ, founded in 2005, describes itself as “the world’s leading provider of Mobile Service Intelligence solutions.”
*A Nokia spokeswoman said CarrierIQ does not ship products for any Nokia devices.

Dry Your Hands Right… Or Washing May Do More Harm Than Good
Of course we wash our hands after using the restroom, but how we dry them determines whether bacteria die off or thrive and spread, according to a new study in the Journal of Applied Microbiology.
Researchers measured the number of bacteria transferred from hands to other surfaces after volunteers washed and then used different types of electric hand dryers like the ones found in many public restrooms.
Most hygienic: High-velocity air-jet electric dryers that quickly strip water away while hands are held still.
Less hygienic: Conventional warm-air hand dryers, which work by evaporation.
Reasons: When hands are rubbed together (as they usually are to hasten drying with these machines), bacteria that live in the skin can be brought to the surface and then transferred to other objects…
and people often are too impatient to dry hands thoroughly with these slower machines, so the remaining moisture allows bacteria to move more readily from one surface to another.
Bottom line: Hand drying is an important part of hand hygiene, not a mere optional step after washing.
Take time to dry hands thoroughly, no matter where you are or what method you use (including paper or cloth towels), so you’ll be less likely to spread any bugs that survive the soap and water—and less likely to pick up new ones from whatever you touch next.
Anna Snelling, PhD, is a senior lecturer in microbiology at the University of Bradford in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, and leader of a study of hand-drying methods.

David, I’ll take my answer on Michelle’s blog. The reason is simple. 1. I know you read it every day.
2. I know that you called to get back together and that isn’t happening after you cheated on me.
3. I fucking you baby brother. I guess we can keep the cheating in the family since you were fucking my older sister.
Oh, yeah that comment you made about the loss of love in Black music.
Music was never just about entertainment in the black community. It was about hope. From the spirituals that slaves sang to survive brutal racism to civil rights anthems like “We Shall Overcome,” love of God, self and one another was the message in much of our music.

I’ll have to come back to read this, busy day today….sounds very interesting
2 things…anonymous, do you know that women see and acknowledge lovely male tail as well, we make an art form out of not ogling so you never even know and yes, with some the fleeting thought is the same and then I said, so sorry, what were you saying if I got temporarily distracted (hmm, did i let just out a woman secret?), it’s not a slight to anyone, just admiring the eye candy…married/no married, there’s nothing wrong with that. What’s married got to do with who you look at and admire for beauty?
and TAO/Viv, did someone visit me? Just asking…think you’d know why if you had, just a yes or no is fine though if you’d like to elaborate on a yes, please do.

I have come to look forward to “Old Friend” by Phyllis Hyman coming from you bed room when I return.
Sometimes I could swear I hear it as the vun accelerator approaches v 1 on its halt.
As you approach your 67 birthday. I would like to celebrate our 48th year together by returning you to that tender age just before you 20th when we met.
After all how fair is it that I haven’t aged and you have? I know you love your grand and great grand children. But You have done much on this planet and I have always returned to share it with you.
Why not share mine with me. Although I don’t have a single planet to share, I do have the adventures of discovering a new one every 3 1/2 months. More than enough time to discover the unique spots for our hot sweaty love.

Michelle, Thanks for the missing you. I decided to add the “Rt” for Resident since you dubbed me as such. It may alleviate some of the confusion.
I have been researching some materials for my clients. I will be in LA for two weeks on the 7th. I will be staying at the Peninsula Beverly Hills for the first eight days and at the Terranea Resort for the last 6.
Friends drop by and say hello if you are in the area at the time. Leave a note at the desk “from a friend from Michelle’s blog” and two best times to hook up.
Love politics, dancing, and the old soulful ballads of R&B. I always bring my collection beginning with Teddy Pendergrass’s “Close The Door” to Billy Paul’s “Me & Mrs. Jones.” I seldom make it through the first 100 Golden Oldies but it is always so enriching taking the journey.
I like to believe that I live that music. You are welcome to come and share my feelings or just take the journey with your favorite libation.

After allegations of sexual harassment and marriage infidelity, plus a lack of capability, Presidential candidate Herman Cain announced that he is officially out of the campaign for President of the United States in November, 2012.
I will not miss you Mr. Cain.
I am sure there are many who feel the same relief as I do, that you have thrown in the towel.
Perhaps in another life you will get to try again? You might even develope some intelligence by then.

Barbara Walters was discussing the people who made it onto her coveted annual “Most Fascinating” special. But immediately after she announced the first people on the list — the Kardashians — Joy Behar objected, Donald Trump — Woopi Goldberg objected.
Then Barbara exclaimed “Why do I do this show? I could have a happy life on ABC News!” she exclaimed. Then she moved onto Simon Cowell — another choice who Joy picked on.
=================================
No, Barbara. You could NOT have a “happy life on ABC News.” You couldn’t even get rehired by ABC News, let alone be “happy” there if you did.
You’re too thin-skinned, lazy, self-absorbed, 1%-ish, deadly dull, rude and your “legitimate journalism” days ended decades ago.
Giving hucksters like The Hairpiece and Kardashians another forum for their incessant, moronic blather is not journalism.
It’s not even interesting (let alone “fascinating”) to begin with. Babs should retire NOW while she still has a little bit of dignity left. At least, some people think she still has some left. I don’t.

I’m still having a hard time understanding how anyone can think Romney even deserves to run never mind win. He’s becoming the Sybil of candidates, don’t like his views? Wait 5 minutes they’ll change.
I don’t even want to go into the Mormon thing too deeply, suffice it to say in most parts of America sex with minors is a crime yet how many mormons are doing it and saying it’s their religious right.
Let’s not forget either that men with with multiple wives usually can be found in the mid-east. How do Republicans rationalize their blindness?

You people bash arab men. But you kiss the ass of white men who are stupid, bigoted, and totally into the money.

You are so greedy or stupid that you would allow them to come to your country and study how to blow it the fuck up with your own aircraft.

Oh, I know..at FOX you are allowed to wear Crosses around your neck, speak of God and say Merry Christmas. FOX has a Judge, a Priest, A Minister, 2 Doctors, a Psychiatrist, some of the Lady Anchors have Law Degrees, Phd’s. Some left CNN and came to FOX.
I also understand Rachel Maddow applied for a job at FOX and did not get it, perhaps the reason for her hatred for FOX.
